Maybe she tries to use her powers but they're not enough so she has to eat more to power up but that's also enough so it starts bleeding into the town, causing everyone to grow hungry to power her up...

Everyone born in the town starts to gain with her4. Marie tries, and fails, to diet. Her friends try to help. But the cravings are just too strong...Of course, this means a few characters like Yu and Naoto who weren't native would be unaffected... at first. Or may suffer the same fate due to less magical reasons.
