Like before Crystal Coast gets wrecked, he has a successful restaurant, he's well-respected, he has a bunch of friends, and is still an accomplished merc even though he's been trying to distance himself from that life - and he obviously wins the Davebowl if you go for his route. But he also shows on several occasions that he's basically losing his mind from the stress running the restaurant is causing him and is turning to drink to cope, he's possibly depressed to boot and his entire backstory all but spells out that he used to be a viciously violent and angry brawler before chilling out which probably has ended up contributing to his alcoholism. There's also the whole deal with him not figuring out that Ashford was one of the generals of the Evil King, but I place the blame on everyone for that.
