Your idea is great becasue it adds an immediate drama/threat to the situation, plus moments to have both external and internal antagonist (maybe the locals blame his presents for bringing the monsters?) I thought a "wildman" story, where humans exist as isolated species with no technology, like Sentinelese, would be fun for seeing the gradual POV shift from grug-like speech at the start to something more modern as he meets the zootopians.
