I think having both to some extent would be best. Having themes keeps things cohesive but having a rule where you can't draw your own characters would keep it from becoming "drawing my oc in this weeks wacky prompt x 20". Means smaller creators have a chance to get some art from it as well which is always good for the thread.

Ehhh I think it has advantages and disadvantages, themes are better at an artistic level since that's what every art community did for inktober. I think characters are better at a community level because it celebrates and brings attention to stuff made by the community.
I do understand it can get troublesome if it's an inner circle that gets to choose the characters but that's not inherent to doing characters.

I had an idea in November I didn't share. Basically an inktober, but call it Tag-tober where a compilation of wholesome, kinky and hmofa related tags are the daily prompts. I have a prototype finished that also encourages people to choose which one of two tags they want to do for a day. So kind of like a red vs blue for the day. There's many days where I have two tags together to challenge the artist to draw both in the same drawing. Basically make an anchor post for each day showing the tag or choices to be clear about the daily theme.

I know, and it feels like we're in the opposite direction, but with the whole list out ahead of time and no reading required for only a month it shouldn't be so bad. Even if 2 artists a day contribute that's awesome. It's also colder time of the year, so less outside obligations for some.

I don't really see the similarity between the first sentence and the remainder of your post, which I agree with. We have pretty strong evidence from Lena that an artist who just shows up one day, invents a character and then draws nothing but the gooneriest sweaty ass giant tits /hmofa/ porn ever is pretty immediately successful assuming it passes a basic quality check. Yes I am being reductionist. I'm denying the notion that it isn't a porn thread by stating that porn is a significant point to this thread, itself. I saw people making these cutout paper dolls of characters a loong time ago, and wanted to practice for something like that. I don't have any card stock right now. Tried to do lining with a Sharpie marker but it's IMO too wide to do lining at the scale of this image. It would work well for a full A4 paper sized thing pretty well I'd say, though.
