When the one drop rule became law they were suddenly thrust into a situation where they were equal to people that they viewed as lesser. Nowadays they're fine with identifying as black, but in Al's day there was a lot of tension. Which is why I find it funny when people act like he would have been super anti racist. Odds are he had Confederate grandfathers, so looking at his life and projecting modern racial ideas/feelings is a little silly. He probably only cared about racism when it negatively affected him.
