Kris looked in his room and at the single star above his bed, and finally let himself breathe.

It had been a month. A busy, tear-soaked, sleepless month since it all ended. A month since the great dark was finally sealed away. It still felt so fresh. So raw. Dess was going to be in that wheelchair for life, though her spirits were as triumphant and exuberant as ever, at least when the loved ones she had left were near. Everyone’s eyes were still wet over Rudy, Carol’s especially. Susie had barely spent an hour of the day apart from Kris since it began, and even more so now that it had ended. Sometimes she would even sleep over. Sometimes they’d both sleep over at the Holidays’ to hear Dess play. She still had it after all these years.

There just wasn’t enough time in the day. Never enough time to hear Dess strum her guitar or play piano with Noelle or skip rocks with Susie. There weren’t enough hours to mourn. Not enough time in the cemetery to thank Gerson or give updates to Rudy on his family. Sunset came when there was still so much to do and process. All the night gave him time to do was think, and even then, sleep would come to cut even that short. When his body was tired enough, it didn’t matter how much he wanted to stay up. It was a special kind of tired, the kind that makes one’s legs ache and shiver when they stretch. As much as he protested against it, his fatigue was presenting arguments he couldn’t defeat.

His sheets rarely felt so welcoming. Even with the heat on, enough of mid winter’s chill crept through the walls to need an extra bulwark, and the new comforter atop his bed fit the bill. The candy canes and fir trees on it reminded him of its providence. Kris’ fingers dragged along the embroidery on his way to the window. He remembered when he could see the Christmas lights on his neighbor’s house shining through the trees back when they were kids.

He couldn’t see them anymore. The sight was bittersweet.

The boy opened his window and brisk winter air seeped in. Dry and cool, the skies were clear, and stars glinted all across his vision. Everywhere in the sky, the firmament shone for him. He could see all the stars he used to point out with ‘Ellie and Azzy and Dess when they were younger. The North Star, Betelgeuse, Beetlejuice, and all the constellations: Orion, Scorpio, the Big Dipper, the Little Dipper, even the Minuscule dipper. Every one of them was so bright he felt he could reach out and touch them. All so bright and lustrous and close.

Especially the two stars in the bushes.

Kris' blood ran colder than the January air around him as they disappeared.

He gripped the windowsill as if it were a gunwale on a ship, staring out like a seaman who had seen faces under the wake. Those stars were eyes. Unblinking and shining right at him. Only the slightest rustle of the leaves betrayed their owner. Their dewing surfaces sparkled under the moon and then lay still.

Kris slammed the window shut, wincing at the thought of waking his mother before a far more profound fear gripped him. His drawer opened, and the hilt of his knife filled his palm. A thousand scenarios played in his head at once while he struggled to slow them down and parse them, each one showcasing the knife and its possible use until the possibility sickened him, and he let his grip loosen, if but a little.

A few deep breaths ushered in more rational lines of thought

It’s just an animal

Perhaps a raccoon.

Or a possum.

Maybe a bear, at the very worst

A black bear. Small. Cowardly. Runs if you yell at it

Just a bear.

One with stark, bright, silver eyes…

Kris twiddled the hilt between his fingers, cursing his attention to detail. The human remembered his childhood when he and Noelle would find all sorts of animals at twilight, the tepetum lucidum in their eyes reflecting a bright green light. Nothing this sharp. Nothing so sickeningly bright and silver like this.

He crept back up to the windowsill, barely letting his eyes go over. He panned right and scanned the treeline. No movement. Not a single gust of wind. No rustling. There was nothing there.

Instead, there was someone across the street.

White irises, locked onto his, shone unblinking like searchlights on a fugitive. The justice they stood poised to mete out sparkled under the reflection of the streetlight, clenched in the right hand of this.. thing. This unmoving thing in the shape of a person whose gaze reeked of malice and made the boy’s heart race in primal dread.

Then it started walking forward.

For the first time in a month, Kris felt it: a decision in his mind made by someone else’s heart

* Stay here

* Run downstairs and check the door <3

He had come to trust them. He could expel them and ask questions later, but for now, he trusted them.

It made the decision. Run downstairs. Check the lock. Keep the knife out.

This thing, this intercessor once more took the reins like it did before. Memories both good and bad flashed through Kris’ mind, each one of them something he would have taken to his bedside that night, but all of them were thrown aside. They could be pondered later. They could be saved for sleep, whenever that came, even if it had to wait until tomorrow. Right now he had to move, and trust the interloper that it would move him the right way.

He got to the living room and it ceded control to him. The human’s pace slowed and his footsteps quieted. The point of his knife aimed towards the door, his eyes fixed on the knob and dreading the sight of it moving. The air around him was almost as still in the air in his lungs.

To Kris’ instant regret, the Interloper chose the former. Usually it made him run everywhere until he was run ragged. Here, it was taking its time, dragging his legs along, making him slink along the wall and behind the furniture, forcing his eyes forward and through the gaps in the blinds, looking for something. Looking for those heart stopping lights and the face upon which they were set like black diamonds. They checked again and again at each window, and every time they looked, they and Kris found nothing. Leaves with moonlight glinting off them made for a false alarm each second, but as the seconds dragged into minutes, the alarm grew mute.

That’s when The Other brought them to the restroom.

Kris was able to get a thought in edgewise, sharing it with the Intercessor in the gestalt consciousness between them. It felt like blowing the dust off a microphone in his mind, but he spoke into it as boldly as he could.

It chose yes.

The door creaked open, and Kris winced at the sound, his muscles tensing until pain stung in his sinews. His socks slid in slow motion across the linoleum, his legs resisting the urges to run that weren’t his. Tinges of that old distrust flared up in him, wondering if he was being pulled around for his own good or to merely sate the curiosity of some pair of eyes watching from nowhere and everywhere. It was so much harder to suppress it than he expected as his skin took on gooseflesh and his instincts screamed at him the closer he got to the bathroom window.

It didn’t get any easier when the Interloper came to another junction

He could feel its decision being made within him, and he instantly tried to fight it. He could feel a second pair of lips silently saying “yes” in place of his own, and each time in his mind's eye, he clamped those lips shut.

This time, it felt more like Kris made the decision, and against all of his good judgment, he answered “no.”

The window opened, and once again, Kris slipped out with knife in hand.

The moon gave out just enough light to see, but not enough to dispel the dark in the trees. Kris dared not venture into the brush, and luckily, neither did his Other. He shut the window behind him, eyes scanning the turf, clinging onto the corners and waiting with a racing heart to see those eyes peeking around them. He saw nothing. Nothing waiting around the sides of the house. Nothing out front of standing under the lamp post on the far end of the street. Nothing in the backyard where he now stood. His eyes strained in the dark to make out any sign of an intruder, and they continually found nothing.

Thinking back to those harrowing chases in the mazes at the Sanctuaries, he let his ears open instead.

No sooner did he do so when the grass stirred behind him.

He and the Interloper were both frozen. Neither dared move. Kris turned as much as his shivering frame would let him.

They did not turn in time to see whatever slammed into the side of the house.

Without another thought in his mind, Kris rushed forward with blade arm extended, adrenaline taking over whatever judgement he and the Intercessor had left that wasn’t overtaken by terror. It was flight or fight, and Kris was done with flight. He came to the place where he heard the noise, eyes scanning. He refused to believe no one was there. He refused to believe his blinded eyes. He charged into the brush, his knife cutting at branches and places to hide until the frenzy wore off and he realized how completely vulnerable he was, how easily something could find him here and take him without leaving a trace. His arm stopped and his fingers weakened along with his stomach, nearly dropping his only means of defense.

He turned around and saw something stuck into the siding.

Long and sharpling in the moonlight.

He crept closer until he could make it out.

Kris pulled the object and saw the blade of a scalpel, newly crusted with splinters and wood glue.

His ears were still open wide enough to hear a whisper from behind him.

“ Y o u ’ l l p a y f o r e v e r y t h i n g , D r e e m u r r . ”

He dropped the scalpel and ran back to the bathroom window almost before it hit the ground.

The human ignored the pain in his shoulder as he plummeted to the tiles. He slammed the window behind him, locking it straight away before proceeding to assure every entrance to the house was inaccessible. The Other relinquished control again, freeing Kris to scuttle from window to window and to the entryway, ensuring the deadbolt was engaged and that every lock on every window was set.

His aching legs pulled him up the stairs, long trained by appetite for pie to ascend and descend the carpeted steps with stealth. God forbid Toriel get involved any more than she already had.

Back in his room in an instant, Kris took a moment to calm his burning nerves, mastering every muscle in his ribcage to keep each breath quiet and steady. It took longer than he would have liked, but he couldn't command his heart to beat any slower. There was, however, one thing he could do with it. His lungs finally finding a slow cadence, Kris inhaled, set his hand over his chest, and reached inward. The feeling was as alien as it was familiar. It was like cleaning too far into his ears, or reaching too far down his throat to remove a blockage. The Other within gave no resistance, and the extraction thereof was almost painless compared to past episodes. It slipped out of his chest without further incident and washed the room in bright red light.

For the first time in a month, and for the second time ever, Kris spoke to it, this soul, this Other Him…

“... What brought you back?”

You weren’t sure.

“Who… who was that? What were they talking about?”

You had no idea.

“You’re.. You’re here to help right? Like last time?”

You didn’t know, but it wasn’t a bad suggestion.

Kris looked like they could use some help

… Do you want to put it in the cage again?

“...”

Kris deliberated, frozen as if in catatonia.

He finally answered. “You can stay with me tonight.”

The light in the room vanished as the soul reentered its vessel, and Kris clambered into bed with a tired heart and aching mind. Even under the warmth of the sheets, the boy found sleep elusive. Too many questions burned in his mind, the foremost of which was asking if that… thing was still out there, still skulking around his house, wielding that scalpel and calling in whispers for the human’s blood. Kris couldn’t stay still. His phone was in his hands in seconds, and his eyes strained against the screen’s brightness. The idea of dark mode was still new to him. He had never had someone to call or text at night before.

A press of his thumb and the phone’s screen went dark, leaving him alone with his reflection and his Other. The phone rested on his drawer, vibrating with answers he didn’t bother to see until morning while he himself struggled to find rest on his own bed. The question of his friends’ safety was, at least for now, partially settled. They knew what to look out for, though there was still no telling as to what it was or when it would rear its face again. A hundred contingencies tried forming in the human’s head, none of which were settling into anything coherent or final. There were too many missing pieces and Kris was killing himself inside trying to put together what little he had. His breath elevated and trembled. His fingers clenched the pillow and his body writhed and twisted and turned under sheets that would have lulled him to sleep any other night.

Then he received comfort from the last thing he expected.

You felt too tired to keep thinking

It’s been a long day, and an even longer night

You need to sleep

So please sleep.

It couldn't make him sleep. For once, it was simply asking him, and he had nothing to rebut with. All the questions he had, all the questions his friends had, the imagery of those white eyes looking back at him through his window, all of it faded away into a gentle darkness that gradually carried him to sleep.

The stars shone overhead.

All the ones he knew, and none that he didn’t.

Genuinely, my random thought about Chilleen having a fragment of Dess in her was more so along the lines of a remnant of a puppy crush that Kris might have had at best — and that's only because I visually noticed a resemblance. Genuinely (2x) I'm more interested in waxing hypotheticals that while Noelle and Susie are the main figures that create the bulk of Chilleen, it's entirely possible that Chilleen is a chimera of ALL of Kris's affections for, well, anyone. It's a deep psychological subconscious thing, almost like Kris's Shadow, that is off-putting to Kris yet is still a hormonal stew made from the dark world's interpretation of him. Perhaps Chilleen likes to mommy him a little? Maybe there's a bit of psycho cop girl there, too? Maybe even a rotten weeb? Does it mean anything too deep? Probably not, and Kris would certainly say it doesn't mean anything, but it does make teasing him somewhat funny which is the intended end-goal of my thoughts.

Of course, I anticipated this issue and even mentioned that it's a character I sometimes have to tiptoe around, but that's still not going to stop me from discussing her even during uncomfortable topics, and even if I'm wrong and far-off what Jelly has in mind. Still, I take offense that I might be seen as some subversive element. Like most true /sus/ers my intentions are sincere.

It's sort of like how Ralsei describes how things clouded in darkness start to morph, like how a coat rack might look like a person in the dark.
Personally, I can see a darkner being created from something that doesn't reflect reality too accurately. For example I can see a darkner based on Toriel in Asgore's DW, like from his wedding band or something, that probably wouldn't be a 1-to-1 reflection of how Asgore's and Toriel's relationship looks like.

True. There's probably a mental/emotional aspect as well. If something feels more personal, like a plushie or a favourite memento I can see it being more "real" as a darkner as well.

I remember an older discussion about the implications of a "living" thing becoming a darkner, such as the cactus who has a crush on Kris, and how they might be on a whole separate level from usual darkners (and how it could relate to the plants Asgore keeps in a future chapter).

At the risk of giving ourselves too much credit, I think an egg room might help out a lot in this "chapter". I always interpreted them as (You) forcing Kris to face parts of his psyche that he'd rather keep buried, and in doing so, help him start healing from those insecurities, or trauma, or whatever it might be. Combination of "sabra," a name for the prickly pear cactus which is probably the most common definitive cactus, and "bara," Japanese for rose which has its own connotations of both romance and thorniness. Well, Chilleen or another darkner maybe. Perhaps not a route people would like to see explored, but it's also the stereotypical route too for a setting so sexual and psychological for Kris. The brain may blur lines that higher reasoning would find distasteful. Subconsciously, some aspects of Toriel might emerge. Or perhaps even Carol.
This could even involve negative sexual fears, such as the idealization of "Noelle" in Kris's head becoming as cold as Carol, or for the idealization of "Susie" who looks up to Toriel becoming more and more like goatmom — including all the traits Kris dislikes. It's natural for Kris to trace the path of his father figures, but it would also come with the (likely irrational) fear of becoming just like them in their worst aspects too.

And to quote Freud (I know, I know) "He does not forgive his mother for having granted the favour of sexual intercourse not to himself but to his father, and he regards it as an act of unfaithfulness." These desires don't need to be taken literally, but it also reminds me of Toriel and Sans. Kris does not *want* Toriel in *that* way, but Sans would still be described as some sort of rival for Toriel's affections, and Kris's mother not giving him full attention would feel like unfaithfulness and betrayal. From the Freudian perspective, the feelings are a thin layer between sexual and platonic (even if higher human reasoning would tame the Id from acting on these urges).
Perhaps it's not a route we'd like to see explored this darkworld, but there's at least some psychological basis for it if we do.

I'm not a starving artist by any means, so I have room to take things slow and feel things out before raising them. I was planning on up'ing them this time, but my commission process in 2025 was a mess so I'm resetting the slate just to test the waters more scientifically.
