External characters like Team JNPR and other students exist to help draw out and develop the main four girls, or to compare and contrast them in interesting ways. As the show starts to go on a bit, the partners spend more plots with their other teammates, and we get more scenes of all four of them doing things together than previously. Episodes are a bit fuller earlier on as a result of this, and secondary characters like Jaune can still be developed in the edges of the episodes they appear in, just as secondary to the titlular characters.If Beacon still falls, and everyone is scattered to the winds, Team RWBY is still a group of four friends with a solid background together, and them being apart is far more tangible. Their reunions are more meaningful, as are the opportunities that they have to help each other with their deeper or newer damage. The difficulties, the moments of hopelessness or aimlessness, these are all explorations of characters we have already gotten to know, and who are at low points, and who their friends we've also gotten to know need to learn how to tighten things and support each other more than ever.

The biggest and most important aspects of a rewrite are, in my opinion, making Team RWBY closer and more fleshed out, and making the buildup from anime Hogwarts hijinks to globetrotting shonen conspiracies more believable. (looking at you, volume 2 finale) Give things time to build up and it's more rewarding for the viewer.
