>An uncharacteristically dry wind blows through Morning Dew late one night. The riftgate flares to life under the starlit sky, bringing a lone traveler. The elven man looks around, does some quick calculations using a compass, astrolabe, and a few other tools, jots down some notes in a journal, and is gone as quick as he came. Nobody would even know he'd been there at all unless they'd been at the gate at midnight for some reason. Even if someone had seen him, he'd have just gone about his business and left all the same.>The stranger's presence may have been fleeting, but the proof of his passing was not. Something had changed with the gate. A subtle feeling to those that would use it indicates that a new connection had been formed. A new destination to be explored. And to certain EOHs that happen to have both a riftgate license and [Status], this was even more clear as their fast travel menu boldly displayed the name "Fermata" in the options.>But what does this mean for you? Will you jump right in regardless of any potential danger? Discuss plans and speculation with fellow guild members? Ignore it and let others investigate? Whatever the case, it starts right here.
>>81702747>A figure appears through the gate some time later, unaware of any elven interference, it would have been extreme levels of coincidence had she happened to have used the riftgate at the exact time someone was performing unscheduled maintenance after all.>Returning from a successful mercenary stint with a combination of well earned pay, slightly less well earned spoils and a desire to not set eyes upon a swamp for some time, Tess makes way for the guild.>Only to pause for a moment, tail scanning the surroundings behind her as usual finds the riftgate to show an unfamiliar destination. Quick reference to internal data confirms Fermata to not be in any list of known stable destinations.>She had been away from the guild for some time and wondered for a moment if they had engaged upon an expedition to the Far Realms, and prepared herself to be appropriately upset at not being included in such a venture.>Taking strides towards the guild hall the ghoulborg decided upon a blunt course of action upon entering through the door.Would it be possible to inform me of what exactly Fermata is?
>>81703207>Domitian looks up from his tea with the rough swing of the door; Tess is not exactly what one could call subtle. Her words, however, served only to puzzle him. Gently placing the teacup down on its saucer, he replies,"It's a pause or sustain in most contexts, though I've seen it used to indicate phrases. What of it?"
>>81702747>>81703207>>81703695>Amu blinks as he sees Tess stroll into the Guild Hall and shrugs."No idea! Domi doesn't seem to know either...maybe we should go check it out?"
Page 10 bump
>>81703695>>81704013For some reason the riftgate highlights it as a destination unique to this particular riftgate, with no additional information.I had assumed to be frank that the guild had managed an expedition to the Far Realms from which I was excluded and this was the name of the beachhead.>Tess appears somewhat apologetic. And was somewhat upset at having been excluded. However if it is an entirely new destination, perhaps it is worth investigating as to why it appeared, although I do not presume those present here have specific knowledge on how riftgates operate? >She looks around the rest of the guild.
>>81704013>He gives a glance askance to Amughar, wry smirk on his lips. "Guess we ought find out.">In that brief moment as Tess speaks, he drains the last of his tea and teleports it back.>>81705889"Establishing a forwards base on the Far Lands would be an undertaking for which you'd be quite desirable. I wouldn't worry about such things.">His statement then broaches the next topic, standing as he does so. "It's not necessarily unheard of for Riftgates to form multigraphs, though usually those are in the rare directed graphs embedded in the overall Riftgate network. However, this sounds more like a new vertex being added...">Drumming fingers on the tabletop, he continues, "It's probably either a new connection embedded in the Riftgate connections or it's one that is already extant in the network but inaccessible due to a discontinuity in the geometry, like a pinch singularity. It's worth exploring, that much is certain.">Giving a glance to the others in the Guildhall, he stops for a moment. "Shall we and all others interested convene at the Riftgate in 15?"
>>81704013>>81705889>>81706543>Whisper had caught part of the conversation while entering the lobby from a side hall.>He's pulling a small cart filled with clay pots. Each pot appears to contain some sort of strange mutated carnivorous plant.>A few squirrels and a gopher waddle in behind the cart, holding their own potted plants.>Whisper must have been using the alchemy lab to make experimental flora again.>Bringing the cart to a stop, he joins the conversation, eyes lighting up with excitement.*What's this? A new Riftgate destination? Oh, I simply must tell Alice!*>Kneeling down, Whisper seems to give some sort of instructions to the gopher.>The various critters begin pushing the cart out the door, likely on their way to the greenhouse.>Whisper will then run off to retrieve Alice, probably returning in about 10 minutes before spending the next 5 minutes taking various adventuring tools such as rope, pitons, parchment, charcoal, etc from his Infinity Bag and laying them out on a table to make sure he's prepared for exploration.

"A scout?"""So t r o u b l e"">Their intentions and thoughts about this were less pure. If a stranger had triangulated out their abode, they would be hunting the trespasser down. Besides a new land is a new area of conquest. A new area where invasive metallic nature can proliferate."We embark with the rest at 15. Bring the skulk back what trophies we can" "living trophies? Only if they're holy Tera. We know how excited they get at nuns." "Like us with rabbits??" "Wha-? Y-yes sister like foxes with rabbits"

>>81702747>The commotion drew Sol from his reading nearby. With the chatter of alterations to the Riftgate, he meandered his way towards the portal’s structure.>He listened to others explain the nature of the gates before chiming in himself, thumbing the riftgate license ring around his finger.“The Riftgate linked to a new location? Is that an uncommon occurance?”>The moth boy pushed his glasses back up on his face and withdrew his notebook from hammerspace, prepared to detail additional notes.

>>81714146And again again
>>81702747Bene, as per usual, is at one of the guild's tables snacking on her choice of fries, crinkle cut. She misses the person, but not what he left. It's hard not to when she's so sensitive to magic and its workings with her knowledge of the Arcane. The Riftgate's signature seems a bit different from usual, but it could be someone simply playing a prank. That being said, she wasn't present at the guildhall when it happened.>>81703207It's early-mid morning or so when she sees Tess stroll on in and make things more clear.>>81706543Then the three have already made a plan to visit. If it wasn't Domi who added a new destination, was it something like the Riftgate network updating? Does that even happen on its own?>>81708399>>81713029It looks as though we might get both Alice and Whisper on board, as well as the Foxdolls. Ah, and Sol, too. With this many planning to go, safety seems almost guaranteed. Bene clears her throat and waves to address the room."Have room for another on this little scouting adventure," she asks, smiling.
>>81738948CUTE! Would suck.
>>81706543>Tess listens considering the possible cause for this new connection.Hm, it is possible that this particular location was severed from the network intentionally, although if this was the prelude to a grand escape or invasion I suppose we would not be having a casual conversation.Still, if we are to have an expedition, it would help to have some of the more martial inclinded guild members as security detail. There is no good way of gaining advance information on our destination is there?>>81729721I believe there's no direct limits on how many people can travel to a particular destination in short order? Might be dangerous, make sure you're prepared properly.
>>81708399>A small pop and Whisper returns with a pixie seated on his shoulder grinning widely"Phew, we're still in time are we? Imagine I slept through this one, my hero""Though I hope we're not in a situation where we actually need climbing tools, considering you know, wings">Quick smooch and a cuddle later she turns around looking at who else is around >>81706543>>81705889>>81704013>>81729721>couple people by the gate already discussing things, they're in deep conversation so she looks around a bit more>>81713029"Both of you are coming too? Should be fun, just make sure that we at least give them 2 seconds to say if they're friendly">A wink and a wave, if the twins wanted to stay hidden it would be trivial for them to do so>>81721532>And a wave to Sol"Well... I once upon a time kinda stole an experimental riftgate and put it on a submarine""Other than that, it's not too common"

(Whisper, Alice, Bene)"By all means, please accompany us. Assuming the new location isn't hazardous on arrival, I see no real issue with bringing along as many as possible. Ideally, this is a simple procedure of confirmation and cartography; we all know that it doesn't take much for situations to turn themselves upside down.">Not much a gambler by profession, Domitian is more than happy to simply have everyone wiling come along. The more people there, the more contingencies that can be developed.>>81721532"Not unheard of, but it's not something most people witness, either. While artificial Riftgates have been produced, a natural connection appearing spontaneously is a fair bit rarer. You can think of it as basically being a separate path opening up in a mountain pass courtesy of a landslide. Rare, but not unthinkable.">>81713029>His ear twitches at the mention of quarry but stays silent.>>81740809"Were such to occur I'm quite sure we'd be moving to secure the gate rather than your waltzing through it. Nonetheless, if they're preparing one we're likely to meet it—and we have you, Bene, and myself on the martial detail; Whisper, Alice, and Sol are quite capable of playing support and interference where needed, with Whisper and Sol being able to add various means of controlling the field through alchemy or gadgetry; the Foxdolls would allow us to take on guerilla tactics should there be a need in addition to their general capabilities. For a rather slapdash expedition, we're well equipped.">To her question, he simply shrugs."Sometimes there is, but I'm not in possession of a Riftgate license myself or the magical means of divination to say otherwise. Speaking of, mind if I tag along using one of your hands? I could try to simply place an arcane mark on an item and teleport to it, but I don't much know the distance or if there are other confounding factors.">He simply seems equipped as per usual as the group readies, his eyes studying the Gate.
>>81729721Walking through the room, Sol listens in on others as he tries to get a better picture of the situation. Bene’s words drew his attention, but he didn’t immediately reply beyond a friendly wave as the moth believed he too was merely along for the ride on this one. >>81740962>Sol turns to the familiar fairy and returns the greeting with a chuckle and a joking retort.I can only hope you placed it on the INSIDE of the submarine. Good to see you’re here Alice! I’m sure there will be some crazy wildlife!>>81747398Listening eagerly as Domi started to explain the situation, the moth boy started writing notes. Since his last adventure, Sol was regretting not taking noting down details he may need later. But as the senior member mentioned gadgetry, the smith couldn’t help but reply. And a brand new toy that might be of use!
>>81740809>>81747398"Yep! Prepared as always!">>81740962Bene gives a look of acknowledgement towards Alice while preoccupied.>>81748771She returns the wave with a great, big grin.
>>81747398>Guerilla evasion was indeed their skillset. Though the subject of rabbits had then flinch briefly. Scouting out each guildhall members' lairs has led to many shenanigans at the bespectacled vixens expense.>>81740962>>81729721>A wave was met in return with one and a nod of yes.
>>81756939
>>81702747>>81740809>>81747398>>81751118Not having a riftgate license of their own Rynn and Meru would likely never have noticed anything had changed with the guild's gateway, if not for overhearing the chatter from the people starting to gather together as they're having a drink in the lobby."Huh, we got an exped- expide-, er, we exploring a new place? Sounds like the kinda shit we're good at. Let's go!""Mn, pack food for trip. Have potions?""Haven't used any from the last time you stocked me up so we should be good there.">Meru wanders off to the kitchen to swipe all the food she can while Rynn joins up with the others."Y'all don't mind if we come along too, right?">>81748771>Seeing Sol already has a license ring on Rynn scoops him up and deposits the Mothman on her shoulder."Just gonna borrow you and your gatepass for a bit."

>>81702747(No mass reply since 4chan thinks it's spam. Fermata continues here.)>Preparations made, the adventurers of Morning Dew set off through the riftgate. Before even taking stock of their surroundings, the first thing they feel is the heat and the arid climate. If it wasn't for the water that could be heard running nearby, the air here would likely be bone dry. Looking around, the group finds themselves in a stone courtyard, walled in on all sides. The floor is sandstone, the pillars and walls are an earthy orange-red topped with decorative foliage. And guards. Atop the walls are guards.>Elves and kitsunes with sunkissed skin stand ready, eyes expertly tracking each member of the party from above. Clad in light leather armor and with spears at the ready, they were prepared to rain hell down on any threat that may come through the gate. On the ground level stood formidable looking dragonkin warriors. Most of these men and women were unarmored, flaunting bare their muscular bodies as they trusted their scales over armor. That doesn't mean they were undefended however, as each carried a heavy shield alongside their weapons. Everyone high and low tensed at the arrival of the group, but their discipline held strong. They were poised to act at any moment, but a commanding officer on the ground signaled a hold with a hand gesture.>He was dressed much like the other ground forces, but without the scales to back it up. He appeared to have less dragon blood in him than the rest, with only a tail to prove his lineage. Instead he proudly wore scars across his chest. A menacing skull helmet adorned with feathers obscures his face. At his side is a wicked looking club carved from the bone of some great beast. [Status] identifies him as "Pacnati, Fermata Defender Chief," and his displayed stats paint a picture of a powerful physical fighter that could likely go toe to toe with most of the assembled guild members in single combat.(Continued next post.)
>>81777780"This way please!">A feminine voice calls out to get the group's attention. Turning to the source they find a fairy woman sitting at a desk made of the same material as the walls. She has a writing utensil in her hand and paperwork laid out in front of her. Piled up to her side are stacks of stone discs."Greetings. Welcome to Fermata. Don't mind the security. So long as you have no ill intent and are cooperative, they won't take any action. I'm Brisce, and I'll be handling your entry process today. Goodness there are a lot of you. You're the largest group we've seen so far. Don't worry, this doesn't take long. You'll be off to discover the charms of our wonderful city in no time. I just need each of you to state your names, press your finger to one of these tokens,">She gestures to the stack of discs."And run some arka through them. That will attune them to you. They'll act as your identification while here, and smooth out any translation issues. They'll also help us find you if any incidents occur, but hopefully that won't be an issue. Please also state if you are authorized to conduct diplomacy for your nation of origin. I'll place an extra mark on your token if you are. We'd also like you to answer some questions about yourself later on if you don't mind, but that's not my job. Someone will contact you during your stay. I can set you up with guides if you desire. I'd recommend doing so, if only so you don't get lost. Fermata is quite daunting in size. Oh, and if you have any questions please feel free to ask. I'll do my best to answer them or have a guide direct you to someone who can.">Her tone is friendly and professional, fitting for what seems to be a customs agent. [Status]-ing the tokens reveals no hidden dangers. They store an arka signature for ID purposes, have a translation function, and while within Fermata city limits they will always find their way back to the holder and allow the authorities to track the holder if needed.
(SnowAngel is still welcome to join in. Moving forward a bit doesn't preclude anyone from participating.)
>>81777780>>81777890>The twins gave initial feral growls when they saw the gateside ambush but the fairys intrusion thankfully stopped the prickly vixens from doing anything rash. When their turn to answer came they eyed the discs with suspicion. Still they answered rank honestly. It was a good test to see how versed this fairy was on wilds culture."TeraForma and GaiaForma, custodians of the nightalloy strain, ladies of court midnight.">The NightAlloy Strain was a network of woods, lakes and groves, containing parasitic metal and crystals. Classed as a dungeon, due to said material being highly corruptive. The vixens have made it a sanctuary to contain mildly villainous and converthappy fae and machines as their duty is to protect and contain these twisted wilds denizens. It also helped clarify that yes, technically representing a wilds faecourt."We would like proof first that these discs arnt some cursed trick or bind. Knowing two are tracked invokes feral paranoia."
Gotta do what you gotta do to make it.
>>81747398>>81759604>Extending a hand to those in need of the means of traveling through the riftgate, Tess strides forwards, outwardly calm, internally tension building within the coils built into her metallic bones, ready strike out at the first sign of danger.>>81777780>She scans her immediate surroundings, unknown area, significantly more arid than any she had encountered, civilization, no sign of direct hostility.>Guards individually capable but no direct threat outside of numbers, leader significant level of threat, if hostility were to break out keep occupied until party can retreat back through riftgate.>Slight nod of respect towards the carved club, and partial relaxation of tension, warrior of his caliber would likely notice her state of alertness. >Conclusion, seemingly peaceful, their arrival not unwelcome.>>81777890>Approaching the border control agent, a more significant nod, followed by a small introduction.Tess, no given name nor affiliation to any nation in particular.>She holds up the token, taking a closer look.I assume you require my original finger for indentification purpose? Apologies a moment.>Cycling through her inventory, Brisce would see the ghoulborg materialize a series of hands of humie origin in various states of preservation and mechanical augmentation, each dismissed with a barely audible mention of the name of their original owners, before finally settling on a somewhat crudely augmented hand with only the fingertips remaining as purely organic, one of which she presses to the disc. This should solve matters, as for questions, am I required to declare any weaponry on my person and if yes, do weapons-grade augmented spare body parts constitute as weaponry?
>>81759604Still trying to focus on any one of the multitude of conversations, Sol was caught off guard when the draconic Rynn suddenly hefted him upon her shoulder. He only caught a comment about potions before being lifted and exhaled a sharp, “huh?” quickly eliciting a laugh’ the moth boy crossed his lower arms and placed them upon the dragoness’ head. “Oh, heya Rynn!” For a brief moment, Sol considers her statement and smiles down while spinning the license ring on his finger. “Sure thing!”>>81777780Asking with the others holding riftgate licenses, three blacksmith held his toward the portal as Rynn approached. But as the guild members traveled through the breach across space, not much would have prepared the moth for the greeting they all received. His breath caught in his throat seeing the military force surrounding them. They weren't attacking, but Sol was starting to whisper barrier spells under his breath. Fortunately though, Pacnati the Defender Chief spoke up.>>81777890Looking over to the desk and the stack of discs, Sol relaxed somewhat and leaned down to look at Rynn in the eye. “Nerve-wracking. What do you think?”

It would help when she meets people, but if she's going to be attacked...? The stat debuff is no-good. Lamia it is!Once through the riftgate, the wave of heat that hits her is refreshing. Hebinier but drier? Perfect for Lamia! Unfortunately, diplomacy *is* first, so she can only hope her appearance isn't too monstrous to the inhabitants of this land. She's somewhat taken aback by how orderly the riftgate's compound is. Why was it disconnected in the first place and why were these people expecting them? The fairy at the desk seems cordial enough and said that there were others before the group, causing Bene to momentarily hum in ponderment. When it's her turn to slither up and grab a disc, she does so without hesitation and runs her Arka through it after verifying its [Status]."Benefactum Tihr, Queen of the Tihr, a fledgling kingdom, and an affiliate of the Morningdew Guildhall. The Queen will likely be delighted to hear that contact was made so quickly after reopening our gate.">She marks down their status and goes to hand them each a token before stopping as they ask for reassurance."Unfortunately, there's nothing I can really provide you as proof. The best I could personally do is swear a binding oath that to the best of my knowledge there's no sort of malicious trick involved, but if such a thing were secretly included I wouldn't have been told. An oath like that doesn't hold much weight. Perhaps one of your companions is skilled in identifying magical items and could confirm it for you? If not, we have no intention of stopping you from leaving back through the gate. You could return with an expert to inspect it. I would have suggested taking an unactivated one back with you to analyze in the safety of your court, but again if there were some complication involved that course of action may not be wise. As for the paranoia, I understand. Many of our citizens have similarly powerful instincts. Just think of it from our perspective though. Would you invite strangers into your own territory without taking any sort of precaution?">>81783962>Pacnati gives Tess a nod back as he sees her relax.>Brisce writes down Tess's name. She speaks to answer her first question, but cuts herself off at the sight of Tess's arm show."Actually we j-">She stares at the display, baffled at what exactly was going on until Tess finally finished up and activated the token."Th-thanks. That'll do it. And no, we're just assuming that anyone coming through the gate is most likely sufficiently armed and dangerous. The keys needed to travel through it are rare, so those that have them are likely powerful, wealthy, or in service to those that are."
>>81789638>The twins inspected the disks, closer gaia looking at the signal emitted when Tess activated it. She thinks she could replicate it to at least throw people off on pinpoint whereabouts. And that will have to do. In the meantime they vented their vulgar lexicon into feral pack terminology"For now we accept it as a security measure. If and only if the designer isnt important to the Alpha (Queen), they will be ravaged upon learning there is anything "unwise" in its design.">They held onto the device, hoping Aura Veil could at least spare them from more compromising info. He uses a club so that would be a bit problematic for Amughar due to his armor. Not to mention potential exposure to the sun...>Amu glances at the fellow guild members who decided to come with him. Plenty can handle themselves but it would cause issues if a fight were to break out especially if the Riftgate got damaged...>He listens to the Fairy woman named Brisce although he does take a moment to appreciate the view before watching some of the others make their introductions. >>81779988>He forgets sometimes that these two can actually be formal although the comment about feral paranoia makes him sigh in relief. As for the guides...">Brisce sends out a simple pulse of arka as a signal. In response a pixie glides down from somewhere above the walls of the courtyard. She flutters in front of Bene's face and chatters on excitedly."Me! Me me me me me! I overheard this one is royalty of some kind. I've got dibs!">She does an exaggerated midair bow towards Bene."My name is Dela, and I'll be your assisting you during your stay here milady. I can take on any questions you have from here so that Brisce can keep the line moving.">Brisce winces at Dela's behavior and quickly covers for her."We have a number of pixies lined up to act as guides. They may be a tad enthusiastic and lacking subtlety, but nobody knows our city better than them.">>81794325"A noble champion and holy warrior? I don't recognize the gods you're blessed by, but that's no problem. So long as they aren't Crelop there won't be any trouble. Maybe you'd be interested in conferring with the priests and priestesses of the Temple District about the deities of the outside world?">It takes her a bit to write down all the titles Amughar had given her."The previous person also mentioned the Morning Dew Guildhall. Is the whole group you came with associated with the organization? That would explain the coordinated arrival."
>>81783962>Satisfied with the gathered group and the time for traversing coming, he gingerly takes hold of one of Tess's additional hands and—those with [Status] active on him for whatever reason may note a sudden sharp decrease in his abilities should they be able to pierce the Veil—steps through the Riftgate. >>81777780>>81777890>In that brief second after moving through, a particular distaste forming in the back of his mouth from the movement through the Riftgate, he perks back up, as if freshly restored and his usual abilities back to their usual levels. He sweeps his eye across the welcome party: a well-staffed killbox around a Riftgate is hardly uncommon, a few warriors worth their mettle, and of course the glint of bronze skin and whatever small sheen of sweat the heat and sun provokes. While he's hardly built for this climate, he can still appreciate what the stonework and architecture, even if he instinctively would rather be under their shade then under the oppressive gaze of the sun. Still, hesitant to display any magic at the moment, he bears with it, queuing up in an orderly fashion and providing shadw to those behind him courtesy of his stature."Count Domizjan of Sinfonia, Fifth Prince of the Royal House of Min. I will be conducting diplomatic relations with your fair city of Fermata; if a guide is available, I would like to employ one.">Whether he really needed one or not was of little concern, so much as simply having access to someone to ask questions of as he moved through the city itself; at the very least, it doesn't seem as if they're staging an invasion, and thus he can simply dispense with such worries. He gingerly bent down to press his finger onto one of the stone disks. He didn't declare any weaponry, following Tess's question, and instead allowed his mind to think through what he presently had available to offer as a gift..."Might I ask with whom I should confer for a dialogue with those in positions of authority over the city?"
>>81791907Bene smiles and gives a friendly wave towards Amughar, before turning to face the bureaucrat.>>81796939The excited Pixie flitting in place, much too close, causes the melusine to pause, before eliciting a giggle."It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Dela, and I appreciate your help. She tilts her head to the right to look directly at Brisce and nods."You as well, Miss Brisce; thank you."After that, Bene peels away from the desk and group and addresses her guide with a clearing of her throat."So... what sorts of amenities and sights to see does Fermata have, exactly, Miss Dela?"
>>81740962>>81777890>Whisper finishes shoving the last bit of supplies back into his Infinity Bag as he heads towards the Riftgate with the group.*Well who knows when we need to help out someone who can't fly? ... Actually, I guess you have your Spatial Magic that can assist with that*>Stepping out through the gate, Whisper is trailed by several animals, including what appears to be a Blink Panther and a scurry squirrels. The squirrels have various miniature armaments.*Hm, elves, kitsune, dragonkin... There's quite a few Fae here. Is this the Wilds? But it's so arid. Alice! Do you think we might actually be in a desert?!*>Seemingly ignoring the threat of all these armed individuals, Whisper is immediately excited at the prospect of exploring such a rare biome.*Oh, we're DEFINITELY bringing some new flora and fauna home with us.*>After listening to the fairy woman speak, Whisper patiently waits his turn in line before reaching her table.>Giving an apologetic look, he reaches out with one hand to gently touch the woman's forearm.*Apologies, I communicate through touch.*>Pressing a finger to one of the discs while spending some Arka:*Whisper.**I am from the Great Wilds, but I am not authorized to conduct diplomacy for any of the Fae Courts or factions... other than maybe the squirrels? You know, I'm not actually certain on that so I'm going stick with "no".**I think I'll listen to some of what Dela has to say about the city and then Alice and I will probably do our best to get lost in your city. Exploration is what we do best!*

Don't worry, I've got some shrinking potions if I want to drag my moth along"
>>81798914"And a prince this time? Your group is quite the prestigious one it seems. While there aren't any direct channels to meet with the royal family at the moment, one of the palace officials has been placed in charge of handling diplomacy for the time being. Ambassador Gleeta is who you want to talk to. Your guide will be able to take you to her. Prince Pelos hosts regular social gatherings for the nobles and priests, Gleeta could probably get you an invitation if you're interested.">Finishing up writing Domi's information, Brisce sends out another signal for a guide. Once again a pixie hovers down to greet the requester. This time with a bit more tact than the previous one."Torsce, at your service milord. If you wish to get straight to business, I can guide you right to Gleeta's office. It's a bit of a hike though. The gate is in one of the lower sections of the city. We'd move it up higher if we could, but it doesn't really work like that. At least that gives me plenty of time to answer any of your questions along the way.">>81803922>Brisce looks worried for a second when Whisper touches her, but understands quickly. She calls off the guards who were already starting to prepare themselves just in case he was about to try something."Don't worry, he just has an alternative communication method.">Whisper's entry is done relatively quickly thanks to not having much extra to include."If you say so. Well so long as the tokens are working, we'll be able to find you if you need us to. Just make sure to stay within the city. We can't do much if you get lost in the sands beyond the walls."
>>81804915>Brisce opens a drawer on her desk and directs Alice to look inside. She would find a stack of pixie sized tokens available for her."They don't resize, but we had a few pixie sized ones made. We weren't sure if we'd need them or not, but better safe than sorry.">Dela gives Alice an excited "ooooh" back and happily hugs her."Cousin! Nice to meet you! We don't have any pixie specific districts, but we've got our own spaces built in just about everywhere. Not just that though. The tinkerers have their homes built right inside of the great machinery for ease of access, and we're always welcome in the palace.">A playful smirk can be seen on the pixie's face."YOUR moth? So you like big boys, do you? I get'cha, I get'cha. Well if your moth wants to meet some fellows of his own, I'd check out the Farmland and Wheel Town. Those are the districts that have the highest mothkin population.">>81786130>She points at Sol who was still waiting in line, having said the last part loud enough for him to hear."And that goes for you too!"
>>81777780>Rynn is perfectly comfortable with the sudden change in climate, with Meru just needing to form a breeze blowing around her to attain a similar comfort level. Both look fearlessly at the surrounding guards with Rynn putting her hands on her hips and crossing her other arms as she puffs out her well endowed chest toward the dragonkins.>>81786130>With most of their group calmly accepting their id tokens, Rynn shrugs and grabs a few handing one each to Meru and Sol before setting the moth on his own feet."Seems like everyone else is fine? If anything does happen feel free to hide between us.">>81777890"You can call me Rynn" "Call me Meru">They give extremely simple introductions before channeling arka through their tokens. Rynn is tempted to tack on some titles like half their group seem to have but doesn't feel like it's important enough to bother, especially with these people seemingly not recognizing the arbiters that Amu named.>Neither dragon makes a request for a guide, both of them ready to start wandering around at random once everyone is set loose.

>>81806507"Rynn and Meru. There we go, all done. If you don't mind me saying it, those wings look awfully impressive. They'll likely draw some attention among the dragonkin population. Probably stares of envy or admiration. I don't know if you noticed, but very few of our dragonkin have wings.">A quick glance around would prove that statement to be true. None of the dragonkin guards in the complex had them."And those that do have them, have them due to mixing blood with winged races such as fairies or moths. Legend has it that the dragons in the region were condemned to the ground by one of the gods long ago, and thus lost their wings. Good luck getting the temples to agree on which god is responsible or their reason why though. They've all got conflicting myths in regards to the matter.">>81791768>A closer look at the token's functions would confirm to the twins that [Aura Veil] wouldn't be necessary. The trinket doesn't pry into information in the first place. It would display their names on enchanted maps of the city linked with the items and allow linked compasses to point at them more directly. Even the displayed names would simply be whatever was provided to Brisce for those using pseudonyms or nicknames. The tracking features themselves could likely be fooled by arcane or illusion magic. Overall they seemed to be fairly basic magical ID badges.
>>81803439"We've got all kinds of things! Once we get out of here we'll be right in the center of the Market District. You could browse all day and still not see everything it has to offer. And from the Market is right in the middle of the city, you can get to most of the other districts from there. The Defender Headquarters isn't just a military district, it also has lots of entertainment. You can find arenas hosting games and bloodsports there, or hit up the bars and brothels that tend to the guards when they're off duty. Wheel Town houses our smiths and artisans, and is itself a jewel of our clockwork machinery. The Temple District is one big art display, with the temples to the gods each competing to have the greatest masterpieces. Whether it be sculptures, paintings, gardens, or the architecture itself, the whole place is beautiful. And for a different kind of beauty, you can check out the Ranger Headquarters. Just like the Defenders, they've got more to offer than just the brave souls that work there. They have the only truly natural spaces left in the city, even if parts of the Farmland come close. They're used for training, but they're also open to the public to get a taste of the outdoors without having to venture into the desert. Notably to you, the serpentkin enclave is also there if you'd like to see how your kind lives here in Fermata.">The pixie has to stop for a moment to catch her breath, having been speaking at a rapid pace. But that doesn't mean that she's done.(Continued next post)
>>81813332"Do you like the stars and the night sky? At the very tippy top of the city, built at the highest point of the palace, is the Observatory. The Queen says that long ago, before the riftgate was broken, we had scholars from all around the world coming to use it. It'll take some vetting before you're let in since it's part of the palace, but if you're on your best behavior while you're here I could put in a good word for you. And that's just the places! We made sure to time the reopening of the gate so that our guests could see some of our cultural events. We've got a music festival coming up soon, as well as the annual sacrificial hunt. It's going to be so much fun!"

Even if I assume lack of clothes and plenty of oil is going to be particularly common anywhere.
>>81806507As others received their own discs and Rynn herself was quite calm, the moth boy quieted his own concerns. "Hopefully it won't come to that." As the dragoness placed him down, Sol also approached Brisce.>>81806250>>81813332>>81794325Upon reaching the fey's desk, Sol introduced himself in a way only a true 「Chūni」could. I am glad you were able to repair your gate andb that we could visit! I am Solaris, chosen and priest of Uzza, demon lord of smithing! But a diplomat i am not." Fortunately he didn't go as far with the introduction as he could, still considering the heavy military presence. "The farmland and Wheeltown you say? I'll be sure to visit! For the craftworks well!" He states with a grand enthusiasm.>>81796939With a smile, the smith attempted to introduce himself to the fairy guides.

One last bump
>>81816122"As a priest and master craftsman, your perspective brings much to this cultural exchange. We're happy to have you involved. And with that, I think I've got you all.">Brisce double checks to make sure she didn't miss anybody. Once she was satisfied that she didn't, she asks one of the guards to show the group out of the riftgate compound.>>81817019"I was making a point to mention it for the mothkin and serpentkin. The foxkin are the second most populous race in the city. You'll find them everywhere. There are communal burrows in most of the lower districts. The closest would be near the base of the lift connecting the Market and Temple districts.">>81820452"Sure thing! The music festival runs for a week. At the start each district will set up a series of stages for anyone from the district to come perform on. Anyone that lives or works in that district is welcome to participate, and by the end of the week each district will have selected a representative individual or group. Then at the end they'll all perform at the Grand Amphitheater in the Temple District. The winning performance gets a prize, but they've been tight lipped about what it's going to be this year. I can't wait to see Megalith and the Rolling Bones play again!""The sacrificial hunt is also fun. Drug up a bunch of virgins and set them racing naked across the Lowland. They get a head start before the monsters that roam down there are allowed to start hunting them down. Anybody that makes it all the way with their chastity intact gets priority recruitment into the Rangers, not that that happens very often. Pixies are flying above the whole time with projection crystals so that select venues across the city can watch the action. Don't worry, it's all volunteers. Mostly elves, but some of the more perverted of the other races have been known to sign up too. And if there are any accidents where things go too far, the healing or revival is covered by the temple that conducts the event."

Gotta find something else to do until then.">>81816122"I was thinkin we'd walk around the market first since we're already next to it, but if the bugsmith or anyone else heads to the smithy area we could stick with them for now?""Mrg, want see smiths, can wait if no one go now...">>81827172"Oh yeah, I guess this is important if we end up wanting anything from the market or wherever. What do you guys use for money around here?"
>>81806229"We are an eccentric bunch, of that much I'm keenly aware.">He nods along to the explanation. "Very well. I take it that any decorum with letters of introduction is rendered moot by circumstance, so I shall carry on as I would otherwise. Thank you for your time, Miss Brisce.">A small bow is offered in return to Miss Torsce, his mind quickly going through and cataloguing the -sce — a suffix, title or rank morpheme? The one guiding Bene is not possessed of as much, though her behavior is also distinctly different than Brisce and Torsce. Seems that there has been at least some linguistic drift in their period of isolation, the obvious association with Crelop and Procel, perhaps a smattering of linguistic metathesis that forced an evolution in an almost anagrammatic fashion? Nevertheless, such thoughts don't display on his face nor delay his words or actions to come. He rolls the stone disk into his hand and stows it."I shall be in your care, Miss Torsce. I do believe a change in wardrobe will be necessary for this climate, so might I trouble you with guiding me to a tailor or clothier before we make our way to Ambassador Gleeta?">>81815282"To be fair, it means little outside of situations like these. If I have need of your services, I shall send for you; few can quite match the impression you can supply.">As tall and somewhat imposing Domizjan can be as a near-giant and proportionally so, sometimes the demeanor of barely suppressed violence is required yet impolite to supply oneself... Not that he expects to need it here. While he can't conduct any long-form talks to begin with, establishing relations should be simple.>>81813332>By this relation of information, he guesses that Torsce is likely to take him over to the Wheel Town. The Observatory sounds like it is worth checking out after a little elbow rubbing with the nobles of the city..."Please, lead the way Miss Torsce."
>>81777780The arrangement of guards as they step out of the gate almost makes the duo feel like they’ve stepped into an ambush, and it’s only after nothing happens for a good minute that they finally relax. Having to resort to violence so soon after their last assignment would have been inconvenient. Though the Pacnati fellow does catch Kalabel’s interest. She’ll have to find more information about him later.“I’m Kakabel, Tenshi of Uzza, and this is Yukia, my colleague.” Neither are here on Arbiter-sanctioned business, so the last thing the tenshi wants at the moment is additional work by introducing herself as a diplomat.Yukia looks at the token with a mix of distrust and suspicion. She knows from Kakabel that subtlety and tact should be used when monitoring diplomats. But if this the only way forward from here, she’ll put up with it.. for now. Perhaps she can do something about the enchantment when they have time to themselves. Being able to be location tracked by the Fey at any time does not make her comfortable.Neither can she help but be curious about the locals. They dress like they’ve never felt a harsh breeze in their lives. She puts on the necklace without a shred of hesitation: if it does something nefarious, it wouldn’t be anything she couldn’t handle.“Don’t stress yourself out Kakabel. I thought we’d never get a break, so give yourself one. If anything bad happens, you know you can rely on me.”Kakabel scoffs. “I could say the same to you. Don’t cause a scene and we can catch a break. Once they let us go, we can hit up the Marketplace for a bite to eat. I want to visit the Ranger and Defender quarters, but after that we can wander to your hearts content.”
>>81838541"Ah, one of the angels. Only those serving the gods will have ever met one of your kind before. Each temple has methods of summoning angels of their respective gods, but it isn't a common affair, nor do they stick around for longer than their business requires. I wouldn't be surprised if the priests flock to you with questions when you pass through the Temple District.">>81815282>>81834182"We do have our own currency, but those shekels are also accepted. They're commonly found in the dungeons throughout the desert, so the Rangers often haul some back. From there they spread through the rest of the city. In fact, the Rangers prefer using them over the coin issued by the palace as a point of pride.">The dragonkin guards give Meru a confused look back as she floats. Pacnati gives one of them permission to speak in order to answer the question."No, we can't fly. Princess Kepa can since she inherited fairy wings from the Queen, but most of us can't. Even out of the dragons allied with the city, the only one that can fly is the Cloudseeker. She's another example of having another race's wings though. Moth in her case."
>>81827172"That music festival does sound fun! Do I need to buy a ticket to the Grand Amphitheater or is admission free? I may have to buy some musical records while I'm here..."Bene hums in thought upon hearing about the sacrificial hunt."Would you be so kind as to tell me about the rules regarding the hunt event, as well as details on the monsters? I enjoy hunting and fighting monsters, so I am of course curious~"
(Another post for everybody. Where is everyone going?)>Exiting the riftgate compound, everyone finds themselves in the center of a bustling marketplace. The area immediately surrounding the gate platform is more open, appearing to be dedicated to temporary vendors. Merchants here are working from stalls or mats, selling a variety of wares. A kitsune selling clay dishware, a mothkin aggressively hawking woven rugs and blankets despite her small size, a dragonkin running a food stall doing performance cooking with his fire breath, these sights and more are among the first that greet the party. Off in the distance, more permanent shops can be seen. The construction here seems to primarily be either adobe or stone.>The sound of running water that could be heard previously is shown to be a river dividing the district right down the middle, with bridges crossing it every so often for convenience. Eyes tracking the source of the water will see a sheer mountain wall on the horizon. A waterfall crashes down from the top, slamming into an elaborate waterwheel built into the cliff. It's difficult to make out from this far away, but it seems to be powering a lift system.>Torsce takes it upon herself to give some details about the area as everyone is figuring out where they want to go."Right now we're in the center-most part of the Market District, the Wanderer's Market. You never know what you'll find here, as merchants come and go based on their own needs. You'll find more established businesses as you get away from the center. And from here you've got a good view of one of the city's great waterwheels. These mechanical wonders power the lifts necessary for easy travel between districts. Trust me when I say you don't want to have to take the stairs or the long paths along the walls."
A bedtime bump
>>81844478>The twins for now kept focus- if they found anything close to a kitsune run spa along the way they will head there. But if not the twins would be trying to rest in the closest fox burrow Brisce mentioned. Ethier way they were searching for an area to rest among kin.
>>81847083>The burrow was easy to find. Just follow the river to the waterfall, turn left instead of boarding the lifts, and follow the wall. Only a short distance away from there is what looks to be something like an apartment complex built right into the mountain. Entrances dot the stone at regular intervals, both horizontally and vertically. A well maintained commons area is out front where a parking lot would be in a modern equivalent. A group of kitsune children are currently using it to play something resembling soccer, chasing around and kicking at a ball. One of the kids isn't with the others, instead watching from a seat on the steps. He waves as the twins approach."Hi there big sisters! I haven't seen you around before. Are you nobles visiting from up in the high districts? Why are you so pale? Are you sick? I can take you to get some medicine from Granny if you are. If you need to lie down, those spots on the end are open for guests.">He looks like a normal kid, but to Gaia's advanced skills with illusion magic it's obvious that that's just a glamour. A low tier one at that. Even without actively prying she can see that he's actually a bit older than he appears. A teenager rather than a young child. Probably a chaperone keeping eyes on and blending in with the little ones while the adults are busy.
>>81844044"If you want to watch it in person, yeah you're going to have to pay up. But it's projected to all the stages around the city for free so that nobody is left out.">Dela's hands gesture back and forth wildly in front of her at what Bene was suggesting about the hunt."No no no no no! You don't hunt the monsters. The monsters do the hunting. These are the ones friendly with the city. The Lowland is kept as a wild territory within the walls for them to live in. They help defend against invasion and provide monster materials. The hunt was originally part of the treaty with the manticores, but became a tradition where any of the denizens of the Lowland can get involved. For fighting monsters, you should join the Rangers on expeditions into the desert. The sands are rife with the minions of Crelop, and the dungeons even more so."
>>81840473>>81844478Kakabel nodded slowly. “If they have any questions, I would be willing to answer them.”The words came out measured, diplomatic, but inside she already felt the doubt settle. Could she even answer them without an issue? The locals had been cut off from the greater world for generations. Their doctrines might be warped, fragmented, or worse. As long as it wasn’t outright heresy she could probably bridge the gap with patience. And a temple would be secure lodging: thick stone walls, warded doors, no midnight knocks from opportunistic assassins. Almost like real rest.Yukia, trailing a step behind, let the thought of that temple room bloom in her mind. It wouldn’t be a drafty inn with paper-thin walls and suspicious stares chosen at the last stretch of a run. No, she’d have a proper chamber carved from cool gray stone, a room she could chill to her hearts content and not worry about leaking floors or endless complaints. Just peace and quiet thick enough to sink into. She could stretch out, let the tension bleed from her shoulders, maybe even nap without one eye open. The idea hit her harder than she expected. With the guards finally stepping aside and letting everyone through, the duo plunged into the market’s chaos to find a bite to eat. Already they could smell novel herbs and spices making their mouths water, and overlapping conversations from a dozen accents they’ve never heard before.

He let his senses unfurl a tad, taking in the sights, sounds, impressions, measurements, the scent of running water, the char of meat and the sizzle of fat and the blooming of spices, the texture of glazed dishware and the small handmade marks and details near invisible to the naked eye, the soft, near inaudible flumphs of air as the woven fabric was moved here and there, and the language, every little pronunciation, the accent, the following of words and phrases—a codex could be compiled of this, but it's hardly something he can do without their permission first: it would be quite rude otherwise.>With his significant stature though, he does attempt to step out of the way of any other passersby. >>81858277"That's right. To get something that fits you, it's going to need to be custom made. So Wheel Town it is.">Torsce leads Domi and anyone else with Wheel Town as their first destination through the markets. The direction she takes them has them passing by stores selling products made of cloth or metal. One store has simple clothing that looks almost mass produced. Actually more than that shop had items that were nearly identical, without any blemishes from the crafting process. Silverware in one, weapons in another.>Before long the sound of running water is once again audible, this time joined by the creaking of metal. The reason for the name quickly becomes apparent. Wheel Town is nestled in a canyon between the wall rising to the Temple District and the wall of the city's inner circle. The river passing through the area does so in steps, cascading down one after the other. Each segment has at least one water wheel, cranking along as the water passes by. But it isn't just the wheels moving. The entire area conveys the image of a single piece of machinery working in unison. Large gears fill out the canyon walls, transferring kinetic energy to the many eccentric workshops dotting the road winding up the steps following the river.>A startling sound rings out, a piercing, rising whistle. Curses join in to the noise as someone fusses over a piece of machinery attached to one of the buildings. It was a boiler venting steam. Steam? Fermata has steam power!?"Here we are. Impressive isn't it? The tinkerers say the sound of everything working as it should soothes them, but to me it's always sounded like a racket.">Guiding the way to one of the workshops, Torsce flies inside."Ralito, you've got a customer! A foreign prince looking to get some local wear. >>81859055Whether it was Alice's gial or not, the moth Blacksmith couldn't help but respond to her warning of challengers. Once again presenting himself as boisterous, he smugly leaned in towards the fey amd whispered, "Let them challenge! Remember that new toy I spoke of before we arrived here?" He briefly flashed a small mechanical insect under his robes, a dull and tarnished silver in color. "Scout drone! Part of a more ambitious project!" For a moment he seemed to pout. "I had hoped to show it off had the portal dropped us off in hostile territory!" But his demeanor quickly changed once he heard himself speak the words aloud. "Oh! But maybe I was too eager. I'm glad we avoided that possibility!">>81834182Reacting to Rynn's words with a look of surprise, Sol can't help but agree. He was far too focused on his work before joining on this venture, amd the dragoness' words drove home yet another thing the distracted bug boy had been neglecting! "Oh, the market's a GOOD idea!" He chirped. "I wonder what the regional cuisine is! Gotta fuel the forge! Should we find some meat?" The thought had him immediately distracted with the thought of desert food.>>81844478Due to his nature though, Sol didn't have to wander far into the market though before the fire-breathing dragon-kin caught his eye to the rows of food stalls. Eyes drawn to the fire and nose to the smells, the fire-drawn smith wasted no time in hurrying over.

Rugs will have a crunchier texture than the blankets, and the dyes are from edible sources. The orange is from a sweet flower that kids will often go looking for for a treat. The black is made from sunflower seeds. I might grab some on the way home today actually. There's an elf right down that way that roasts and seasons them if you're interested in trying some.">>81858436>>81855445>>81861690>>81859055>Those looking for something to eat in the market find plenty of it. The dragonkin was using his flames to grill corn and some kind of meat. The elf that had been pointed out to Whisper was roasting whole sunflower heads and had additional sauces and spices available. One merchant had a big basket of peanuts and was selling them bowl by bowl. Another had tortillas and beans. If you were particularly adventurous, there was a kitsune with skewered lizards, snakes, and scorpions.

>>81857295"You'll be fine as long as you aren't hurting or scaring people with magic. Most people have at least a little innate magical ability. It just wouldn't be right to say they couldn't use it. Inconvenient too. As for flying, just don't accidentally hit anyone else.""The Grand Amphitheater will have representatives at each of the district's stages in the lead up phase selling tickets to the main even. You can't miss them.">Dela chuckles at the last question."If you have to ask what counts as a virgin, you probably don't. Even some kissing and touching can be disqualifying if it went too far. They're real picky about it. But if you wanted to join up with the Rangers, there are better ways. The hunt just finds a promising newbie every now and then. Anybody can join by passing some basic tests. It's a dangerous job. Prestigious, but dangerous. They take whoever they can get. During rough patches in our history they've even resorted to offering Ranger duty as an alternative punishment for criminals. If you're as experienced as your confidence seems to imply, they'll probably be glad to have you along."
>>81860732>His eyes widen as the implications of what the twins were saying run through his mind."Th-that'll still be Granny. She'll be in the main hall right now. It's the larger entrance, the one with stairs leading down and all the chalk drawings. Don't be taken aback by her outfit. That shameless old hag still dresses like she's only got a tail or two.">The one he's talking about is easy to spot. A couple of the children are currently scribbling more pictures on the wall and ground around the opening. Going down the stairs leads to an open chamber with a number of connected rooms. The main room had a number of mats arranged in a circle around a fire pit. Soft light fills the area, radiating out from crystals set in the walls."Who could it be at this hour? Come in, come in. What do you need Granny for?">The voice comes from one of the side rooms. Following it, Tera and Gaia find a seven tailed kitsune writing at a desk. Her clothing gives the impression of a young vixen on the prowl for a mate, but that image is betrayed her numerous tails. Turning to see them, she stops what she's doing and welcomes them."Wait a second, you aren't any of ours. I'd heard that the riftgate was repaired, but I didn't expect any travelers to seek out our burrows. I'm Matriarch Dreza, head of our humble community here. I hope the city has been to your liking so far. I take it that you had something in mind, coming to meet me like this? Just tell me what Granny can do for you. I'm nothing if not hospitable."

Thank you!"Bene sighs and shrugs her shoulders."That's how it is then. I ought to be strong enough to join the Rangers outright if the Dragonkin with the skullhelm is as elite as I imagine he is. That is not to say I could win against him, but I could put up a fight."The naga pauses."Anyways, can you show me to the Rangers' headquarters where the Serpentkin reside? The twins curtsied, lightly restraining one another whenever they got the urge to say something vulgar. Their feral twitches gave the impression of maiden vixens who cant decide between being civilized or being primal. "Thank you Dreza, Tera, Gaia. the city seems...crowded- suspiciously segregated- pleasent enough. Nothing too drastic, just a place to take shelter away from prying eyes. We could try setting up our own food stall some time.""Hunt local monsters, cook new meals?""Yeah, sounds like there's some dangerous stuff outside the city. >>81873996"Since we're flying, we can take the direct route. No winding through streets or having to take the long way due to the city layout.">She takes off over the crowd. The Ranger Headquarters is at a lower elevation the the Market, and they go over and along the cliffside ramparts separating the districts. The headquarters themselves are visible off in the distance, but that's not the way they're going. They fly above lush oasis land, almost jungle thick in some places. Their destination is the source of this district's water, a place where two flows from higher areas collide in a double waterfall. Dela keeps talking along the way, somehow audible over the passing air."I'll warn you in advance, the serpentkin don't exactly have the greatest reputation. They're the newest additions to the city, even if that still means they've been here for hundreds of years by now. Their population is relatively small, having just been a few tribes when they joined us. It doesn't help that there are plenty of other tribes still out there in the desert hostile to us. The common image of them is of witches practicing dark magic, secluded away in their corner of the city. If it wasn't for Prince Venari's support, they'd probably be living in the Lowland instead of on Ranger land. With their short lifespans compared to the rest of us and eager to prove the rumors about them wrong, they're an ambitious and competitive lot.">Contrary to that last bit, a number of lamia can be seen lazily sunning themselves on the grassy oasis shore or playing in the water."Well, some of them are at least."

>>81891903"Great!"Bene lifts off with a strong, downward gust, directing the wind with magic beneath her wings to glide. As Dela tells her about the Lamia residing within Fermata, the elapid soon realizes that she fits the stereotype of them quite well. She hesitates before speaking, thinking about bringing it up, but opts to move on instead, gazing at the Lamia below and waving to any that see her."I may just have to visit Prince Venari while I'm here. He must be quite the diplomat it sounds like. Now I am also curious about Dark Magic's reputation around here. Is it banned or just looked down on? I have met many, much like myself, who are more pragmatically-minded in its regard."
>>81861490>He follows, his eyes drifting in every which direction. Clothwork and textiles pinned and sewn or seemingly woven with mechanical precision; the silver and steel forced by hammer or melted and cast with lost-wax or gently shaped from blanks—the artisanal works that formed the finer elements of daily life moved about without any disruption. Further on the path, perhaps now crossing the threshold into the demesne proper, came the eponym clear as day: cast waterwheels turned by the constant flow of water, gravity and potential extracted endlessly, repeatedly down each sheer drop in elevation. Gears meshing together along the sandstone cliff-faces, almost certainly, he thinks, to some massive flywheels or other method of kinetic battery.>The hiss of a steam boiler attracts his attention as soon as he's made aware of it; while well-accustomed to the concept and its many variations from long-previous experience, it was quite the rarity to see it actually put to use in Harahel other than as simple, almost trivial toys. Fuel and its exact processing did flit across his mind, wondering if they had developed coke and were using coal gas as a means of heating, but given their location such petro-fuels are likely hard to come by and in limited reserves, though a single city needs only so much. "The rhythm of industry. The systems are a wonder by themselves; I'm curious as to the particulars of how its integrated and used. I'll save such questions for when time is less pressed.">Following Torsce into the shop and carefully crouching while bending over, he manages to fit himself inside the shop as comfortably as he can."Good day, Mr. Ralito. I'm in need of both professional and formal wear in the styles unique to Fermata. I leave to your professional judgement how to best achieve that, but I would request that it be made to accommodate the climate.">Slipping off his outerwear and placing it on a rack, he asks,"Do you measure by shirt or skin, Mr. Ralito?"
>>81880552>Dreza take a second to process the back and forth between the two."Ok, that's a lot to address in such few words. You're right that there's some segregation. I don't know the norms of where you come from or how it looks to you, especially if you've only seen the Markets so far for context. I can discuss that topic with you further if you'd like. As for carving out your own space, that's fine if the existing guest rooms aren't to your liking. I've got expansion plans somewhere back in my documents that you'd need to consult first, to make sure you don't cause a problem later on.">She gives the twins an appraising look."I'm a little concerned with your intentions. You seem to struggle with the urges that occasionally take the bestial and the fey. Fermata is well accustomed to the existence of such things. If your interest in taboos has anything to do with our kind's trickster spirit, keep it clean. Don't play any games with the water, the machinery, or the guards. If someone gets hurt or something important gets damaged, people will be more than just mad. Common sense stuff. I remember a prank war between the foxkin and the pixies back in the day that ended up going way too far because people couldn't follow basic rules.">Shaking her head, she gets back on topic."If you're going to be performing rituals in our home, I'm going to need more information than that. What did you have in mind?"

>>81899078"Certainly. We would be quite...aggravated if the kitsune or even dollborn were under such harms. We are better at behaving then we look though, just. So mitigating that would be nice.""Troublesome? Maybe but not a problem... our "pranks" are more just seeking outlets- Tera especially." "Hey!" "Its true tera, the wilds lust races through you like nothing else, i have to pinch you every time you see a lost chicken, let alone our fiance, or a burrow with pretty vixens." "You're the same you just act cold!" "Sigh, maybe, but lets focus for dreza please. Rituals are a few things-one. A illusory labyrinth to keep unwanted trouble from touching your home and especially our den. of course we'll make it so kitsunes can find the burrow freely. Two- summoning birds to send messages and plants for self sufficience mostly." "I mean. We *could* do *that* ritual spell Gaia.">Gaia lightly pinches her sister"Get your mind out the gutter- we are saving *that* for our fiance's village we are *not* turning this burrow into a fox warren! Especially when they arnt here!" " But we can summon them-" "Not. Now Tera">The way they casually expressed such heavy magics had a vulgarity to its own, but it proved they were serious and had capability of keeping this den safer- even if Tera's primal impulsive thoughts was probably reminding Dreza of sillier maiden days. Her icy sister seemed very capable of quelling that, but if goaded too much Tera might end up caving in to feral desires and making this a nymphomanic den for their skulk

>>81897977"I have access to the finest textiles Fermata has to offer, so fitting the climate is of no concern. It has high air flow and helps keep you from getting sweaty, which is important with the nobility preferring a tighter fit than most. They like showing off up there, and part of that is being able to afford more fabric in their outfits. It may not be as flashy as jewelry, but showing less skin can be seen as another way of flaunting their wealth. The noble ladies in particular have recently become fond of long sleeve-like gloves made of expensive material.">Seeing Domi's size, Ralito retrieves a step-ladder."Whichever you're more comfortable with. I think skin gives the better measurements, but not all of my clients wish to do it that way so I learned to adjust early on. I just have to note down which I used."
>>81882279>Setting up and selling actual meat might be a profitable idea. There are very few meat options available here in the Wanderer's Market. The meat that the dragonkin had been selling was grilled rabbit, and after walking around some Rynn and Meru would find a merchant cleaning and cooking birds. But other than those two, the only other meat option they see are the skewered critters. Fermata seemed more reliant on plant based protein than large game or domesticated animals. If those were available, they might be found in a full restaurant rather than a stall. Or maybe only the higher districts had access to such luxuries.>The shops keep on going. A fairy was selling a selection of carved stone trinkets, from bracelets and necklaces lined with stone beads, to toy figurines and what looked like religious idols. One of the merchants getting a fair amount of business was an elf selling cactus needles. A diverse group of kids runs off excitedly after pooling together some coins to buy a pack of colored chalk sticks. Another stall had waterskins and various leather goods. Everything a citizen of Fermata could want could be found here.

From official petitions to seduction, it's all been futile. Seeing you must have gotten their hopes up. Anyway, this is it. The entrance to the Serpentkin Enclave. There's a whole cave system behind the waterfalls. Get in there and introduce yourself. Or should I do a royal announcement to introduce you?"
>>81918444>The mostly-carnivorous dragons quickly notice the lack of meat options, plans for their usual food stall forming in no time. They'll just need to see what they can catch in the surroundings before bringing out some of their food reserves.>>81919177"I don't really wear much in the way of clothes most of the time but I'm willing to try any local stuff that looks like it would fit.">For now Rynn buys a few of the bracelets and necklaces from the fairy shopkeeper, and a leather belt with a waterskin and some pouches. She's fully prepared to load up on local jewelry during their stay, from these simple stone carvings to more valuable metals and gems. She already has similar gear to the leather goods among her adventuring equipment but she's just as happy to hoard such items as she is piles of gold, and the pouches are nice for when she wants to pull out something without obviously taking it from her inventory.>>81919570>Rynn mostly ignores the conversation about illusory clothing, having been informed previously by other guild members about the couple's tendency to walk around naked and being inclined toward (semi)nudity herself."Meru makes most of our clothes. I kind of wonder if anyone around here would have a damn clue how to make draconic clothing for me when barely any of their dragonkin have wings.">>81919603"Something sweet would be nice actually. Since we can't get much meat might as well satisfy the sweet tooth instead."
>>81919161>sips in the distance
>>81921951Bene nods."That makes sense. I assume Liches, Vampires, and all other manner of Undead are publicly scorned then. It would be ideal if some of the friends I came here with are aware of that..."The other Lamias' curiosity causes her lips to curl into a grin, remaining there even as she converses more with the Pixie."How interesting~ Promise to tell me more about that later, if you would, but for now, I will go and speak to them myself. Tihr is not so grand yet for me to be worthy of such treatment. I ought to prove myself to them, as I have with others, to earn their acknowledgements."With that said, Bene slithers into the waterfall cave, but only after waving once more to her fellow elapids with a warm smile. The melusine quickly acquires a mien befitting of a royal lady, despite her [Buff], martial physique, and makes her way to what seems to be the cave-town's square. Clearing her throat, she casts a spell to amplify her volume to project her voice further, but within reason. She doesn't know the exact acoustics of the cave, after all."Greetings!" she booms, much too loudly. "Ah! Apologies!" she says, the volume now more appropriate."I am Benefactum Tihr, Queen of Tihr: a fledgling kingdom in eastern Arpeggio. It is a great pleasure to meet my distant relatives, the Serpentkin. Miss Dela, one of Fermata's helpful guides, has led me here and, briefly, told me about you all. I now wish to hear about your tribes from your leaders or representatives themselves. Thank you!" she finishes, with a dignified curtsy of her dress.
>>81902362"Nothing of the sort! The only thing resembling slavery in Fermata is when criminals are exiled beyond the walls to work in the Outer Farmland, and that's for serious offenders. The foxkin are doing just fine. Prince Pelos wouldn't allow us to become disadvantaged. What you're seeing is a sort of self selection. How do I explain this to an outsider?">She ponders for a moment."It goes back to the instincts. We're a race with strong family ties and a desire to live in homes carved into the earth. This isn't just cultural, it's in the blood. The burrows scattered around for the foxkin to live in are for those that express those predispositions. There's nothing stopping those that don't feel them as strongly from living wherever they like. There are foxkin among the ranks of both the Defenders and the Rangers, foxkin priests and priestesses in the Temple District, foxkin nobles up in the High District. We live where it's comfortable for us. And not just the foxkin. Fermatan society is structured in such a way to productively channel the instincts that can show up in each race, which to you probably looks like bias but for us is consideration. Take the fairies for example. Many of them feel a need to serve the Queen, and rarely a fairy is born with the old compulsion to take names. Nametakers are often given secretary jobs 'taking names' for government paperwork that scratches both itches in a harmless way. I'd wager you encountered one documenting travelers coming through the gate."(Continued next post)
>>81928272>All that said, she switches topics."If by dollborn you mean the clockwork servants sometimes crafted by the divine, you don't have to worry about those. Our clockwork is advanced, but I've not heard of any attempts to imbue true life into them coming to fruition. The illusionary defenses would be welcome, but make sure that the pixies can get in too. They're the messengers we use. We have some gardens out front, so any enhancements there would be great. But please do NOT do any fertility rituals. We have a hard enough time controlling our population as it is."
>>81928272>They mentally noted things in brief>1) Fermata generally considered exile enough of a severe punishment, which means the outskirts are dangerous.>2) Marionettes were very rare here and were likely in the temples if at all, which also meant the Reapers who traditionally make them were possibly being figures of worship.>3) the areas were segregated between primals and non- in a way to make instincts work with society sure, but effectively that the higher ups were going to have rewarded people whose natural state is to seek control. Celestials and control freak Monsters.>4) If a burrow designated for ferally inclined kitsune was having population issues by their own chiefs account, this den was horny as hell. That last comment had the twins visibly sweat with nerves, before Gaia dragged Tera by the scruff of her collar before she gets ideas."R-Right. Include faries in maze acceptance, we did meet a few. Assist the gardens- Barracading our room with a golem just in case.">When the time came, likely under the watchful eye of Dreza and any curious fox, the twins setup shop- excavating a room for themselves that followed the burrows suggested blueprints with a pack of tamed metallic moles, alongside golems to support the new room until the support beams were in place all of which Tera had summoned and banished with ease (summon IV). In turn Gaia set up a series of runes around the burrows entrances. Anyone who entered that wasnt a fairy or kitsune would be comically lost in a maze of matching tunnels, walking around in circles for an hour, to them feeling like 2 days, only to walk outside. As a safeguard, any fairy/kitsune "leading" the lost intruder for 5 minutes would snap them out of it, which Gaia explained that rule to the chief. (Illusion V)
>>81929677>>81928287(Continued)>For their own room they kept a large elemental fox as a guard. It claimed when asked it was so either twin couldnt sneak out when they were quote "Too Feral". It wasnt foolproof, especially not to higher ranked fae, but it will do. The real reason was the twins understanding that it wouldnt be long at all until some kitsune was bound to realize why these two had such high capacity for magic, that they could see and use nature spirits [Sleigh Baggy]. And when that hour came this welcoming abode of ritualistic kitsune was going to be their prison. Not out of taboo, but out of possessiveness.Any morally ambiguous fae would struggle to resist the idea of making a conduit out of a Mushi individual. Even good fae might keep a person trapped in bliss or a gilded cage if it meant having a truly renewable wellspring. The twins would just have to hope this burrow or any fae doesnt catch them off guard.
>>81919570>>81919603>>81864993Sol snickered at Alice’s compliment. Thanks Alice! The independent movement is from magic circuits within the metal structure.” His focus shifts as he exchanges coin for some of the dragon-kin’s roasted corn and briefly ponders whatever grilled critter he is selling. “My real hang-up is the behavior! Too rigid… but any programming more realistic would require higher circuit density.” Deciding to purchase the mystery meat, the overexcited smith exchanged the appropriate weight in coin. “And increasing the size would only increase its visibility! I’ll have to improve my magic.” He throws the fairy a self-assured smirk. “But… a more realistic carapace? I suppose if thin enough, it could be quite striking!”>>81882279Already starting on the roasted corn, Sol threw the vendor a thumb’s up and started back to the group, already carrying food in two hands and glancing at other stalls all the while. Hearing Rynn’s suggestion though, he could’t help put drool a little. “I certainly wouldn’t mind getting involved with that! But with the limited selection of meats here… is hunting restricted? Or are the monsters outside of town just that strong?” He took a strong bite of roasted critter and corn in one go, pondering the combination. “But for now-“ The moth began to flit between stalls, joyfully chatting with vendors and amassing a collection of prepared foodstuffs. Of course, he inquired about where to find the best desserts and preserved foods before returning to the group snacking on sweet-roasted tubers. “But I’ll admit: unchecked, I could stay in this part of town all day.”
