>>82037147>picI still hate that Tui killed her off. Such a waste of a character.
>>82037500WoF is certainly not above wasting its characters for shock value. IIRC that was explicitly the reason she was killed off the way she was.
>>82037607>that was explicitly the reason she was killed off the way she was.If the rumors are true, Carnelian originally was going to be the Skywing POV, but the fans wanted a Peril book so Tui decided to rewrite the book's plot with Peril as the POV dragon. But Peril ended up doing 99% of what Carnelian was going to do and letting Carnelian just stay at JMA while the rest of the Winglet went on adventures felt odd, so she decided to discard her using the cave explosion. Her having a backstory with Ruby and Peril in book 6 are remnants of the discarded plan.
I just came here to share my feelings about a nsfw dinosaur pic I grabbed the web. Because nobody in my life knows the kindof a freak I am.eeeeeeeeeeee those cute little leggies! she's so fluffy! She's so cute! aaaaaaaaaa I just want cuddle her and pet her all over! so cute!
>>82038136There is nothing wrong with the masculine urge to cuddle a cute fluffraptor.
>>82037734Pretty much this - Tui gave in to the fans and spared Peril in Arc 1 when she was supposed to die, then Arc 2 came around and she realized she didn't have anything for Peril to actually do, so she killed off the planned Skywing POV character and gave her role to Peril instead. It sucks, bug at least Tui had the decency to give Carnelian the only proper funeral we've seen in the entire series - Bigtail didn't even get one, despite dying in the same explosion at the same time as her.
>>82037734>>82038337I have no horse (or dragon) in this race, but from the outside, that seems... kinda incompetent.Generally not a good idea to give posthumous backstory to a character that was discarded like background garbage for editing convenience, UNLESS one is deliberately lampooning how trivially the character's life was treated. Which is a different, more meta kind of story than I understand WoF to be.This is the sort of backstory that is pretty much always a waste of reader time, because the ultimate outcome remains meaningless. If the death was trivial enough to be decided based on editorial convenience for another story, the event can't really be made more meaningful retroactively. Its triviality is literally structural to a different story. The BEST that one can achieve here is... making the reader feel worse about a minor detail to a different book's inciting incident (which in this case resulted from a character cast planning mistake). Inciting incidents to adventure plots are generally meant to be forgotten, because... you're supposed to be focused on the adventure they incite. Minor details like characters killed in inciting incidents are basically set dressing - think the guy who gets killed by arrows in the opening cutscene of Skyrim. Literally not meaningful enough to be alive during character creation. If there's any truth to that rumor, it feels very poorly planned all around. There's not much reason for a reader to accommodate a writer later implicitly lamenting potential that the writer wasted themselves.Probably should've just eaten the L there and not bothered making people more upset about a planning mistake she'd already committed to, and left Carnelian's entire existence in the dustbin. That's what I'd have done, because eventually readers would forget the random background character I killed off because I couldn't be bothered to leave her alive after rewriting Peril into her hollowed out skin (or scales, as the case may be).

>>82037500>>82037734>>82038337I really liked her because she seemed like a young version of Kestrel to me, but like her she didn't last a single book.
>>82038412>posthumous backstoryYou've got to understand that Arc 2 was already planned out and Book 6 was already partially written by the time Book 5 was on its way out the door, and changing 5's ending to save Peril was a very last-second thing. By the time that ending was rewritten, Tui had already decided that Fatespeaker was going to be the next book's protagonist, had already changed her mind on that and created Moonwatcher to take her place because she wanted to make a school setting, and had already planned out who her classmates were going to be and what roles they were going to play in the new adventure. Everyone already had their parts to play, and everyone already had their connections to each other worked out, so the backstory wasn't "posthumous" at the time. Then the big rewrite came, and suddenly Tui was left with a character that she hadn't planned a role for, but whom fans wanted to see more of; the only thing she could do in the short amount of time she had before it was time to release Book 6 was kill off the existing Skywing character and stick Peril into her role, which is why Peril's inclusion in Arc 2 feels so disjointed and awkward and why she pretty much becomes irrelevant after her book is over....Unless you're referring to the new Winglet as the "posthumous backstory", in which case, that was planned right from Carnelian's introduction. Carnelian and Garnet were supposed to have a rivalry with each other - Garnet was a Scarlet supporter, while Carnelian supported Ruby, and the two would have (presumably) had some sort of conflict with each other, as there's no reason to point out that the two hated each other otherwise. Tui likely had that entire Winglet planned out while she was working on the Tourmaline/Ruby twist, long before Peril had to be shoehorned into the plot.
>>82038136>>82038270Raptors are cute - especially ones with tomboyish names who act tough but are easily flustered.

>>82038887Fans wanting PoV of a different character would suggest... writing for that character, to me. Not copying and pasting the name of that character over another I'd already written in a completely different context. In the first place, I sure as hell wouldn't be nullifying the death of a character if I'd already started writing the next story as if they were dead. That shit's already set in stone in pre-pre-planning.Either way, it seems like Peril should have either fully consumed everything usable from Carnelian, and the rest been repurposed or discarded the way Carnelian herself was, or Peril PoV should have been put off so it would actually be Peril and not a Peril-shaped skinwalker taking over Carnelian's role in the story. The backstory is posthumous in publishing timing, which is what matters here - again, the absolute best case scenario (for not just removing/ignoring Carnelian's backstory entirely) is making the character cast planning incompetence that resulted in her summary authorial execution even more acutely upsetting (and obvious) to readers. There is literally no other "upside." This would be like episode 5 of Star Wars having some meaningless side story about Luke's life with his adoptive parents on Tatooine and a sappy funeral for them so George Lucas could apologize for killing them off by... trying to make the audience sadder about it. It's a really silly, entirely self-imposed and self-worsening problem.Tui wasn't "left with" any mess here she didn't make entirely herself. You sure as hell can't blame "what the readers wanted" for it.I'm not sure I'm following what you wrote correctly, but it sounds like this isn't the only last-second change of mind that's had deleterious consequences to overall cohesiveness.

>>82039170Where to even begin with this post? I suppose I should have asked you right from the start: did you actually read any of these books you're arguing about before posting? Also, you're aware that the author herself has confirmed several times now that she changed the ending of Book 5 at the last possible second because fans predicted she was going to kill Peril off and weren't happy about it? And that she's confirmed herself that she generally plans an entire arc out beforehand and writes about two books ahead in advance? Peril being spared and the fact that it had consequences for the following arc aren't what's up for debate here, it's only the specifics of what was changed to make room for her that are unclear. These are the facts as we know them:>Book 6 was already mostly written by the time Book 5 was about to release; Tui stated that she hastily rewrote the ending of this book several times to try to find a satisfying way to spare Peril and please the fans, though the exact details of WHAT were changed aren't known (we can guess, though, based on what we know of earlier drafts of the previous books).>Tui was now left with a character that was supposed to be dead, and had to figure out how to integrate her into the next arc despite the fact that she had already planned out all the details for Arc 2 and had already mostly written Book 6 at this point>In-universe, there are five Winglets (Homeroom groups, not the short stories); each Winglet is populated by one member of each tribe, meaning there's seven dragons in each group and a total of five dragon representatives from each tribe in general. The list of who's in each Winglet is shown at the start of each book in Arc 2...and Peril isn't on the list, because she wasn't planned to be there; she off-sets the number of Skywings by existing, making the Skywing tribe have 6 representatives while everyone else only has 5.(Continued)
>>82046819>Each of the five members of each tribe was hand-picked by their Queen to serve as their representatives - these students were the members of the Royal families, their personal bodyguards, highly decorated officers from the war, and, in the case of the Rainwings and Nightwings, were picked to act as the face of her new dual-kingdom. Peril, on the other hand, was repeatedly stated to be viewed as a dangerous, violent war criminal - she's absolutely not someone Ruby would have picked to represent her tribe, and definitely not someone she'd trust around a school full of children and former soldiers, making her sudden inclusion somewhat jarring. Even more telling, Peril does not belong to any Winglet (see the above point) and makes the number of Skywing representatives disproportionate until Carnelian is removed and replaced from the list. This corresponds with Tui's statement that Peril was not planned to be present this arc and had to be forced into the narrative.>Carnelian is given a backstory, a personality, and has more focus on her than other background characters - we're told she has insecurities and an animosity towards both Garnet and Kinkajou, the latter of whom she apparently murders on at least one timeline. No other background character gets this level of focus, and none of this gets resolved>Carnelian is the ONLY member of the Jade Winglet to enter the History Classroom when it explodes; the other two casualties (Tamarin, who is only wounded, and Bigtail, who dies) are from the Gold Winglet, who were just leaving the room when Moon showed up. This is also the point where Peril suddenly becomes relevant - she had been mentioned once at the beginning of the story but was kept off-screen until magically showing up at the exact moment Carnelian was killed off, and we even get a dramatic and totally-not-symbolic scene of her cradling Carnelian's corpse and pulling her out of the fire.(Continued)
>>82046830>Though an unconfirmed rumor, the plot itself suggests Kinkajou was supposed to get her own book. However, she's quickly taken out of commission just before Book 8 - Peril's book.>Peril's story is weirdly disconnected from the rest of the plot, and features not one, but two different plots smashed together - one with her travelling with Turtle, and one with her going to the Sky Kingdom - a place she's narratively not welcome and has no reason to return to (she literally has to be mind-controlled to make her go there in the finished story). According to the rumors, both of these different plots are condensed versions of two different books - Kinkajou's, where she would have been the one with Turtle (hence his random crush on her brought up in the following book despite the two never interacting with each other until that point) and Carnelian's, which was about saving Ruby (a character we were explicitly told Carnelian was very attached to and was willing to fight Scarlet claw-to-claw to protect). >Also unusually, Peril's only role in both of these plots is apparently just to serve as an observer as events unfold around her, which is bizarre given she was established as having an aggressive and hot-headed personality earlier on. It's clear that events needed to unfold in a very specific way, and Peril acting in her normal demeanor would have changed things dramatically, so Tui had her mind-controlled and stripped of her Flamescales powers for more than half of her story - specifically, the most important part of the story, which is weird if that had been the plan from the start. It's almost as if that half of the story had been written for someone else, and the only way to make it work with Peril was to sideline her, force her to act out of character, and strip her of her abilities so the plot could still reach the intended outcome...(continued)
>>82046842>After her book, Peril loses all significance and pretty much vanishes from the story; again, this is weird, given her personality, and again, she literally needs to be influenced by magic to keep her canon personality and powers from interfering with the plot, which is unusual. Also, Kinkajou immediately returns to the story and continues to be a significant character from this point onward.>Turtle is said to have a crush on Kinkajou in his book, which comes out of the blue, as the two characters never interacted until that point; this lends credence to the rumor of Kinkajou having a book that was cut, and suggests that the first part of Peril's book was supposed to be him and Kink travelling together before being rewritten, hence their weird chemistry. There's more, but I've already written more than intended. The point is that, while not literally copy/pasting Peril's name over Carnelian's (and Kinkajou's), it's very obvious she was forced into Arc 2 and her story wasn't planned for her - it was very clunkily modified from at least two different plots just to give her screentime and please the fans, as Tui by her own admission had not planned for her to still be alive by this point. All it takes is for you to both understand that Peril was not supposed to be in Arc 2 at all, and to pay attention to how clunkily everything involving Peril (and Kinkajou) is handled after Carnelian is hastily removed from existence, and it should be immediately obvious what happened here - but that requires you to have actually read the story and paid attention. Kink and Carnelian were sidelined so that Peril could be hamfisted into the story, and as soon as Peril's moment in the sun is over, she's hastily removed from the plot, because Tui had no further use for her. As you yoruself said:>it seems like Peril[...]fully consumed everything usable from Carnelian, and the rest been repurposed or discarded the way Carnelian wasWhich is indeed what seems to have happened.

>>82046858To add slightly to this as well; Kinkajou isn't the only one to be forcibly written out. Foeslayer also gets HEAVILY shafted, as well as Winter for that matter. It's pretty obvious given Foeslayer's return and the explicit mention of it in the prophecy that much of Kinkajou's book was likely to take place in the Old Night Kingdom; Likely this it where they would find out about the scroll, and Chameleon's possession of it, with Foeslayer no doubt expected to serve as guide throughout. Instead, in order to hastily get rid of her, Winter picks a fight with Peril, and she decides to abandon the dragon who saved her after millennia of torture, whom I might add is all but explicitly a reincarnation of Arctic to boot, and whom Foeslayer's already been given a maternal attitude towards. Needless to say, she if anything given her prior trackrecord as an exceptional warrior, would've been expected to face down Peril. Instead, she runs off, callously abandoning Winter in the progress, and only returning much later with a strange friendship with the party to boot that feels incredibly out of place. I wish we could've seen the original. I love Foeslayer, her and Winter's dynamic was excellent, and it genuinely pisses me off how she gets written out in what is the single most out of character moment in the series. All for a mediocre book, that really should've just been a Winglet.

>>82048336One: that anon isn't me. Two: giving ME generic writing advice accomplished nothing - I'm not the author, and it's been stated many, MANY times now that Tui is shit at this. Your original argument in your first post was that Tui wouldn't have killed off Carnelian to stick Peril into the story, because that's not something you would have done, but what YOU would have done doesn't change what actually happened. Your whole argument is moot.
>>82048336>"Either way, it seems like Peril should have either fully consumed everything usable from Carnelian, and the rest been repurposed or discarded the way Carnelian herself was, or Peril PoV should have been put off so it would actually be Peril and not a Peril-shaped skinwalker taking over Carnelian's role in the story."Tui did exactly as you suggest. >>82048514It's not that he's a retard, it's that he's arrogant. It's clear from his responses that he's talking about something he never actually read. He's offering "generic writing advice" with the implication that he could've written the story he never read better, which just comes off as self-fellation because we're discussing a 14-year-old book series. >>82049309>What would one be reading WoF for besides "Tui's actual writing"?Honestly, because plot and story isn't the only part of 'writing' in a book or media. Take the first Avatar movie for example. The story is boring, predictable and has been done many times already, but people still flock to the cinemas because the setting of Pandora is just a great experience for them. For WoF I simply like many of the characters and I would enjoy them watch paint dry as long as they stay in character and interact with each other.

There needs to be work, but honestly, even there most my critiques are for the rewriting and desperate need to plan the ending out well in advance so we don't get utterly fucked bow-wrapping.If I could hit Tui over the head with one thing it'd be to PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD stop with the single PoV.It's fucking her hard when it comes to wrapping up stories. I'm pretty sure it's a good chunk of why her endings falter.

>>82049258I enjoy stories that involve xenofiction and imaginative worlds, but I don't find the time to sit down and read for a lengthy amount. I simply can't relax and focus on the story. That's why I mostly stick to audiobooks. Anyone have good audiobook suggestions?
>>82049596>people still flock to the cinemas because the setting of Pandora is just a great experienceThis isn't really why they do it - it's because it looks pretty and colorful on a theater screen. Half of them probably didn't even remember the planet was called "Pandora" after the first movie; the setting isn't carrying it, the movie spectacle is. WoF doesn't really have the benefit of a multi-million dollar FX budget.I can get liking characters more than the story they're in, but I think I would find that more frustrating than anything. I've been reading (and very much enjoying) the Lord of Mysteries webnovel lately, and if I was only enjoying the characters and setting and hating the plot, then I think I wouldn't enjoy reading it much at all because I would be constantly feeling like the setting and characters I like were being squandered.>>82049685I'm not convinced Tui REALLY did what he suggested, because he said "usable." I don't think most of it actually was, and that's why it's so incongruous.
>>82050008>because he said "usable." I don't think most of it actually wasCall me having no standards, but I really didn't think much of it while reading. If it weren't for you guys I wouldn't even know there were any rewrites. I just enjoyed the Turtle/Peryl chemistry of the first half and Scarlet in the second.
>>82046381>picKinda impressive how many times that artist has nuked his gallery
>>82036612I have an nsfw fetish statue of Fang from Primal. I mentioned it here before. It’s very hyper ass though.
>>82049975Wish I did. The two scaly audiobooks I listened to both shit the bed in the second volume (Master of the Hoard and A Dream of Wings and Flame). Vainqueur had a pretty good first audiobook and I read the rest.
>>82050234Maybe you didn't care as much about the rewritten bits because your subconscious knew they were ass and ignored them.
>>82050394>Vainqueur had a pretty good first audiobook and I read the restYea, those were nice. I got all 4 of them after I finished with WoF.Jolie is precious and the kobold rangers were always a treat. Pink should write more smut.
>>82050321was anything of value lost?why do some artists never seem to learn how to do consistent anatomy and posing? especially if they're going to the effort of shading their work.
>>82050780Complacency, an unwillingness to find or admit fault in their work and not working on the basics. Lack of critique is another thing holding them back, or they brush it off entirely.
>>82050780>was anything of value lost?Probably not, but a part of me likes him for nostalgia. While he created some weird military stuff and fart pics, he also created some few pics that past me liked at the time. But looking at it you're right his art didn't evolve much. I guess he's one that does it purely for hobby so he doesn't have much motivation to improve his art.
>>82051169I say it's more of a resource issue, whether it is time to draw, knowledge found in either text or connections, or just financial to get equipment depending on what is being done. There shouldn't be doubt in people wanting to draw better than before. It just takes a lot. There's bound to be some who choose willingly to stagnate but I find those to be exceptions.
>AAAAIIIIEEEEE SAVE ME TAMA ANON
>>82051673True. Getting some pencils and a sketchbook is very cheap compared to getting into digital, and getting a few minutes in to scribble something isn't unrealistic. There's a lot of resources to get online as well nowadays. In the end it does come down to how much time and effort you want to put into it.

>>82049685>Moon stuffing her face...againI get that she's a growing girl (and if her dad's any indication, she's still got a LOT of growing to do), but seriously - she needs to leave some food for the other Nightwing students.
>>82054855It's been a while since I read the comic, but iirc...[No spoilers]He apparently kills Mark, but later it's revealed that what he "killed" was a clone with no brain activity. Then he tells Mark that now that everyone thinks he's dead,, they can devise a megaplan to save the planet once and for all. But Mark finally realizes that Dinosaurus is batshit insane. Here comes the anticlimactic part: faced with Mark's refusal, Dinosaurus has a sudden "moment of clarity" and tells Mark "Well, you're right... Then I guess there's nothing to live for... Kill me now." Mark hesitates at first, but ends up doing it.I interpreted this as Kirkman killing off the character because he lost interest and wanted to focus on gay Freddie Mercury from outer spaceWhat a hack[/on /trash/]

Never bothered with Fortnite before, but with all the talk of a female lizard (actually a dragon) being released, I thought I'd give it a try. Didn't realize how brainlessly easy it would be to play - I bought the pass for $8, jumped into a few games (solo, so me vs 99 other players), grabbed a shotgun, and sent a lot of kids home crying. I unlocked Synthesis here and all of her related items (as well as some stuff from the pirate guy, some lego stuff, and a couple of other random odds and ends) in just under an hour.Didn't know you could dye your characters in this - I made her suit black and scales purple. Cute derg, I think she's worth the money I spent on the pass, especially if I stick with it and keep playing.
