As a kind of palate cleanser, I also read the Vistella update. Uses some neat stuff I haven't really seen used in an FVN for the dream. And it is funny that they have him meet his fursona. Bit of a slower update as the MC is largely showing off his phone, but it feels more like a calm before the storm type of thing. Focusing on how Vistalla is similar but different. It's not so much as a criticism towards enmities not being realistic at that time, but the fact that how whiny it comes off in the VN at some points (Cliff is criticized by the author's voice moose character for being interested in studying the Meseta culture and language for example). Also, the communist sympathies in Nik's route are obvious, although those are not progressive politics per se. In other words, KISS is a good rule to have, more chances for the author to wrap the story up before the iron goes cold, too. I can understand wanting to have a world you want to breathe life into being this big epic story, but the longer you want it to go, the more you have to support the moment-to-moment writing. You also need a strong first impression if you want to have a slow-burn story. It is why a lot of media tends to start with a more tense scene to engage the viewer and make them wonder about the context of it. Hurstchapel is more interested in just long narrative scenes, and the first one is the MC thinking about the main plot and setting up the world's racism. It could have started with some kind of holy war, but that is something, I guess. You don't ever get a do-over on a first impression, so that is why it is important to do it right. Shorter stories are underrated, and a lot of it seems to come from this strange assumption that it isn't a serious piece of literature if it doesn't get to an arbitrary size. I like shorter stories and tend to do them when I write. Not to say longer ones can't work, but they have more challenges as they scale in scope; it increases the chance of the foundation not holding anymore and it crumbling down. One advantage it does have is that it has time. It could show important moments and not have to worry as much about every scene having a faster pace. This goes back to one of the big issues with Hurstchapel: that it doesn't use this strength and would instead try to read like a textbook about a fantasy history instead of letting the characters more naturally bring things up or show the reader.

It just depends more on content over POV changes being good or bad.
