nta but well you've helped me realize why I found NGNM basically unreadable. This means absolutely nothing to me. Achievement feels really hollow to me compared to really guaranteed emotional and material support. HDG fiction is so fascinating in the kinds of neuroses it addresses and doesn't address in various authors. So many fics seem entirely directed towards people like you, who really genuinely feel a push towards human greatness. The affini live in a wierd nebulous state between anarchy and their famous hyper bureaucracy and councils. What few right non-affini soponts are granted are taken fairly seriously - such as the absolute gurantee of well being.

Simple seduction and light trickery are perfectly allowed with no paperwork needed. If someone lets themselves be talked into florethood, or engages in close cuddles enough to catch a biorythm, ect ect... thats all cool. Noone was technicaly forced, so its allright, even if there was some deliberate manipulation.

When it comes to outright FORCING something, it needs to either be a justifiable emergency or other special case... or they'll need to file a NOID, in which they'll lay out their case for why force is needed, how the sophont will be better off under the affinis care, ect... once that is processes and accepted, anything goes! Afterall, your owner knows best whats good for you.

The important thing to never forget - for my headcanon, anyways - is that the affini never act selfishly. They may be a rational self interest that just happens to align with whats best for you, but they will genuinely never do something that would leave you worse off.

The dynamic of how and why affini do and can take florets are going to be perhaps not the same but smillar enough. Afterall this derives
from their moral, cultural and biological imperative, not anything else.
I do like to think that domestication treaties are genuinely important though, and though the affini probabbly have "standard approaches" they start off with, they're unique based on the species with genuine consequences.
For instance, species that submit more or less freely may get to keep more "genuine" political rights, as opposed to resistants like the terrans, who get to choose the color and shape of the flag.

I put genuine in qoutation marks there, because of course they are still under affini oversight so all power ultimately flows from them. If a protectorate pushes to far with something, the affini would intervene - though they'd almost certainly gently push things to never get to that point the the first place.

They might get to have elections, laws passed, ect... but of course their political power exists like the kings power does today - its "real" but its also not in many ways.

the bulk of the uniqueness will be in its other specific stipulations. Terrans are banned from capitalism harshly, cause its what we were suffering under. I like the idea of treaties being meaningfully different. All of them allow domestication obviously and assure the safety and happiness of sophonts but otherwise the Affini might vary it based on when it's signed.

Affini sign a treaty on their own and just institute it across the species, any relation to the old government is dissolved and if not outright annexed the Affini are the entire government. So individual species can run from 1-4 with 1 being a species that instantly accepted the Affini and 4 being those guys from for a better universe who put up a good fight. For humans I'd go with you somewhere between 2 and 3. A bit closer to 3 I'd say like an Affini can act on a hunch and clean up afterwards but they can't be overt. If you let them into your hab and befriend them they can hit you with biorhythms and push you to take drugs, maybe even get away with giving you them against your will, but in public they pretty much have to follow all the rules and an Affini suddenly grabbing a Terran and forcibly core cuddling them would deeply disturbing and other Affini would probably jump in to stop them.

I'm too insistant on my "A truly happy creature isn't civilized" notion to see thedomestication treaties as anything but a constant legal battle on all fronts.
Lines on whats allowed and isn't are being drawn, erased, and redrawn at such a truly constant rate that genuinely knowing where each and everyone currently is borders on mathematically impossible especially for the Affini actually out there adopting/abducting sophonts.
There's very real arguments being made and acknowleged from both species on both sides, based on preserved and verrified history, active research and development and never ending adjustment to avoid biases.
Generally the effect lands somewhere between genuine altruism and galactic slave trade with a lot more drugs.
Obviously most Affini try to stick with the letter and spirit of exisisting law and legislation, but there are enough who don't to be recognized meaningfully as crime even on the galactic stage.
Its incredibly unlikely you'll encounter a genuinely malicious affini, but it would be wrong to assume they simply don't exist.
