If someone else has done a story similar to yours already, but that's not really a bad thing. It means that the idea is one that you know is good. It shows that other people aren't just willing to read it, but also to write it. There's no uncertainty to it.You're also able to see how someone else went about it first and learn from it. Seeing the strengths and weaknesses of similar works allows you to avoid issues before you walk into them. And yeah, making short stories definitely helps. I did a few under a different name to see if I could actually finish something. And I did! It also taught me what I was comfortable with writing and what I wasn't. If you're interested in some unsolicited suggestions about your idea, I could share them too, though I'll leave that to you.
