alright guy sup its me again in the next few days (actually tomorrow 26 afternoon) ill finally board the plane to a neighboring ASEAN city (Kuala Lumpur) lets see how this short VACation goes everybody
now how do we make the best out of this little time? we only have 5 days exactly and only booked the bare minimum (hotel + plane ticket return home) what fun activities or theme park rides do you typically enjoy there?
ive also heard that they have a similar Islamic architecture to Dubai on buildings can anyone confirm this looks interesting though id prefer to see European colonial structures rather than the PRIDE screens banner on Araneta city (wokeism yuck)
have anybody experienced censorship on their local internet due to conservative "prawn" (pr0n) laws? i have RDP installed on my home computer for fallback shitposting and images backup just in case cuckchan is rangebanned
previous threads (sort of) >>2625303 >>2630848 jannies sorry for the repeat posting damn can you guys actually participate this time rather than stay idle? we dont get these opportunities very often as were not your typical richfag e-celeb vloggers

I've only been to Kota Kinabalu, it was a pretty fun budget tropical vacation from Korea. Pretty fucking far from Kuala Lumpur though, I don't even know if the laws about alcohol and Muslim majority presence is the same. I remember a lot of cool night markets, trying durian, my tiny kgf very aggressively bartering with everyone, and that the only kind of alcohol you could buy was like a 2% wine cooler that was quite expensive.

I'm sure their capital city is much more westernized but where I was all the women wore hijabs and you'd hear evening prayers on loudspeakers every night. I would be shocked to see any openly lgbt stuff around there, no idea about the porn tho as I went with my gf at the time
>>

bong in malaysia here
>what fun activities
kl is not really a tourist centred city. there are a few interesting things to see but it is really just another asian megacity
most of the fun things tend to revolve around food and drink. for example there are lots of cool rooftop bars although they do tend to be full of instagram selfie takers
>theme park rides do you typically enjoy there?
you could try sunway lagoon i guess
>ive also heard that they have a similar Islamic architecture to Dubai on buildings can anyone confirm this looks interesting
there are a few places but they are mainly modern structures like the government complex in putrajaya. see e.g. pic related (istana kehakiman = palace of justice- the supreme court)
>though id prefer to see European colonial structures
you could have a look at the old kl train station which is a pretty interesting building
but if you want colonialism then you have to go somewhere like cameron highlands. the weather is cooler up there so it is where the europeans tended to stay in the colonial era. look up the smokehouse hotel for example
>have anybody experienced censorship on their local internet due to conservative "prawn" (pr0n) laws?
yes. watching porn online is not actually illegal in malaysia but some ISPs block it by default anyway. it is blocked by my home ISP but in my office i can get access to pornhub and most others without any problem
keeping porn on your laptop is illegal, though in practice you would have to be pretty stupid and unlucky to get caught
most media is heavily censored- some movies are cut so much they are barely watchable
>>2635068
>where I was all the women wore hijabs
malaysia is a weird place. in cities you see malay women in their tudungs (hijabs) walking next to chinese girls wearing teeny tiny shorts and vest tops. this does cause friction. in the news recently was a story about a chinese woman who was turned away from a hospital because she was wearing shorts

IME, 90% of hotel WiFi in Malaysia block 4chan.
There are plenty of tourists in central KL. Personally, I think Jonker Street in Malacca is superior to Petaling Street in KL.
You'll see more skin showing in KL than in all the lesser cities of the country combined.

I hope you have fun, anon! I lived in Malaysia for four years, it's quite an exceptional country, very much the good parts of East Asia with the good bits of Indochina. Of course, I say that as my experience was as an expatriate, but yours will probably be the same.

Sadly, I can't offer that many ideas in the way of activities. When I was there, I was a child, like 6-10. Went to Mont'Kiara International School in Kuala Lumpur, got to meet a ton of people from all over the world. Definitely recommend having some Roti Chanai. The country is still full of British influences, so you'll see a lot of restaurants or businesses that involve the Isles. Lots of Japanese influence too - tons, even. As I said before, Malaysia is a very delightful fusion of Japanese and Indochina habits.

>p/night hotel tourism tax
>12 ringgit atm fees
>undisclosed service charges of 10%+ everywhere
>expensive (and slow) grabs
>every serviceperson resents being asked for help and won't do it unless they absolutely have to

in Vietnam, scamming was part of the culture and I could navigate that, but in Malaysia it's institutionalized and there's no way around it. it's a shame because the country is super cool and interesting otherwise. puts shallow "diverse" western cultures to shame

also you sound annoying af so don't come

I never got charged an ATM fee in Malaysia using my VISA bank card, though I was always warned that fees may be charged to my account when I made a withdrawal.
>undisclosed service charges
KL is the worst for added-on charges. I got dinged with a 16% surcharge twice while eating out there, both times at nice-looking tourist-trap places that usually stayed empty. RM 10 per night tourism fee is always collected in the city, on top of the quoted rate, and many hotels also add a service charge for reservations.
Elsewhere in Malaysia, hotels rarely levy a service charge, and often "forget" to collect the tourism fee. Sometimes the tourism fee is replaced by local fees, like the 2 RM per night heritage tax in Malacca. Restaurant bills always reflected the menu prices.

Service at Chinese restaurants was unfriendly but efficient. They are quite insular; some Chinese places in Temerloh had Chinese-only signage and didn't understand word one of English. Payment is often demanded upon delivery of food to your table.
The size of Malay restaurants often means your service is prompt and impersonal. But I encountered many friendly Malays who were glad to have a white foreigner visiting their city and trying their food. Overall, I'd say service is great in Malaysia.
Didn't use Grab in Malaysia...but walking around is not always pleasant in the country. Still, it's doable. Many towns have bus stations right in the center.
>>
>>2636480
>>expensive (and slow) grabs
i use grab several times a week. i don't find it expensive or slow. maybe if you did your whole week's grocery shopping through it or something like that, since some of the prices do tend to be inflated over normal shop prices. for transport and takeaway delivery it's fine
>it's a shame because the country is super cool and interesting otherwise.
maybe if is your first time here
>puts shallow "diverse" western cultures to shame
malaysia is "diverse" and it causes no end of shitstorms

Thoughts on the installation art? is WOLO kl hotel good? there are no windows plus the poo in the loo room has no bathtub and a rather weird sliding privacy door

redpill me on Johor Bahru
what's the city like compared to KL and Singapore
would it be worth basing oneself there long term and traveling to Singapore as needed?
>>
>>2637682
>redpill me on Johor Bahru
dormitory town for people who work in singapore but can't afford to live there
>what's the city like compared to KL and Singapore
jb is a weird characterless place, just an urban sprawl with very little going for it
>would it be worth basing oneself there long term and traveling to Singapore as needed?
sure why not, that's what thousands of other people do. it depends if you can cope with the joyless nature of the place
i have only ever stayed there briefly, on my way to or from singapore. that's enough for me
>>
>>2637682
Last time I crossed Singapore to JB I was in line for 3 and a half hours at immigration with all the Singaporeans going for a cheap Malaysia trip. I can't imagine doing that daily.
>>
I'm a UKanon that's never been abroad before and I was thinking of doing KL for 90 days for the start of my Asia trip/gap year because it's cheap and they speak English, seems like a good balance between pushing myself and not losing my mind because of language barrier
Thoughts? Found a decent amount of nightlife stuff that interests me, my main concerns are lack of interesting things to do during the day, poor walkability and having trouble dating (NOT cooming) locals because of the islam thing
>>
>>2637928
anon you need to give your head a wobble
>I'm a UKanon that's never been abroad before and I was thinking of doing KL for 90 days
lol
after 90 days in KL you will want to jump off the TRX tower
the only reason you would spend so long here is if you were using it as a hub to explore other places in the region
also be aware. as a uk anon you are supposed to be able to stay up to 90 days in malaysia without a visa. but malaysia immigration like to fuck around and count the days in strange ways. so don't plan on staying more than about 80-85 days to be safe- however if you do any side trips to other countries the 90 days will reset when you re-enter malaysia
>Found a decent amount of nightlife stuff that interests me,
this at least is true, kl is pretty much a 24 hour city. personally i like the rooftop bars although sometimes you have to book ahead
>my main concerns are lack of interesting things to do during the day,
yeah, unless you like endless malls there is not a great deal to see or do
>poor walkability
the main problem is that it is fucking hot and humid all the fucking time. but this is why we have grab (=local uber equivalent) even for short trips
>and having trouble dating (NOT cooming) locals because of the islam thing
not really my scene but you could probably find a chinese or indian girl with a fetish for white meat
>Thoughts?
yeah do yourself a favour and plan to spend 10 days max here then clear off to thailand, bali, singapore, hong kong or literally anywhere else
>>
>>2637928
KL is surprisingly walkable. The metro gets you all over the city. Sometimes motorbikes take over the sidewalk during heavy traffic. It's usually less hot than Bangkok.
I'd absolutely recommend exploring other parts of Malaysia, though. There's a lot of beautiful nature to discover, great food, friendly people, etc. Few white foreigners venture outside of KL and Penang. I did a loop from KL to Malacca - Kluang - Mersing - Kuantan - Temerloh and back to KL. It was great.
>>
>>2637977
thanks anon, I'll keep what you said about the fucky immigration officers in mind
the 90 days thing is mostly so that I can hide in my room and sort my life out, I'm a NEET at home and I can't fix anything, was gonna use that time to learn Thai or something so that I could go to Bangkok after and be able to speak a bit at least
>>2637984

JB is basically all of the soullessness of Singapore but with none of the money or well designed buildings, at this point I honestly respect the hyper-religious states more, at least they have character and some semblance of dignity/self-respect, all the workers cross the border daily while all the Sinkies cross the border and treat it like their slave playground with cheap petrol and low taxes. It's a very broken world.
That said, I'm a pale ass white guy and think Malaysians in general are the nicest people, it's certainly got it's problems with corruption and such but is the best place in Asia, worked there for many years, along with two in Singapore and miss it a lot. SG in comparison has absolutely no soul and I feel bad for anyone trapped in that existence.

>>
>>2638618
>colonizers
Malays basically bent over and took it in the ass for every foreign force that turned up on their doorstep it's actually shameful how weak you were. Singapore was sold off for a few hundred pounds when the British asked nicely, Melaka was taken by a few Dutch ships and a hundred men.
Indians, British, Japs and the middle east walked straight in murdering men, raping women and changing the nation's religion overnight. Malaysians hunted Orang Asli for sport and don't feel the slighest bit of shame. You truly couldn't give a shit about colonizing, be honest about that onion army boy

haha I just liked the country, although civilized = soulless in some people's minds.
Cutting my 90 days short to return to Thailand felt like a step down in human development. Yet Thailand feels more locally unique, both in lodging and food options, and is more enticing to wander around and check out.
Malaysian city centers are made of uniform building blocks similar to a three-story strip mall, and Malaysian restaurants are all huge dining halls which serve the same array of food for the same prices, so you might as well eat at the place across the street. Malacca stands out because it is in fact a city worth walking around and checking out.

Is Malaysia the most boring country in SEA?
Yeah, it's cheap and hospitable, but there doesn't seem to be anything about the country worth discussing.
Every Malaysia general thread on /trv/ dies an early death from lack of interest.
I'd like to ride the Jungle Railway from Johor Bahru to Tumpat, but goddamn if it doesn't pass through the dullest, most monotonous jungle terrain possible. There doesn't seem to be a point in either checking out the scenery or stopping at any of the instantly forgettable places along the way.

>Malaysian city centers are made of uniform building blocks similar to a three-story strip mall
this is true. that picture could be almost anywhere in malaysia
>Is Malaysia the most boring country in SEA?
it's certainly a candidate. that's muslims for ya. they rip the fun out of everything.
through life's twists and turns, i now spend most of my time in malaysia. but i take as many chances as possible to go to other countries in the region. even singapore is a merciful escape
the main thing that people talk about is the food. but that is mostly fried gloop, or full of sugar. i know that has a certain appeal but it does get tedious after a while
having said that there is good stuff here. the islands around the coast are beautiful, for example. east malaysia is still wild and free, thanks to the natives of sarawak and sabah not taking any shit from the malays

I found Malaysia to be pretty tame. It's a nice country overall. I think it's boring because it's just 3 parallel societies that hate each other (Malay, Chinese, Tamil Indians). Never saw any group of people interacting with another the entire time I was there, so there's no "public" culture. Just another multicultural utopia.
