If you had time for ONE day trip from Mexico City what would it be? I'm thinking either a colonial town (like Puebla or Taxco) or teotihuacan. Which colonial town is prettiest? How nice is teotihuacan considering I plan to visit other ancient mesoamerican ruins in the future.

For colonial cities, I think Valle de Bravo, Tlaxcala, Mineral del Monte and Queretaro are great destinations. For one day, I would choose Valle de Bravo.
Then, the ruins of Teotihuacan are gigantic, near Mexico City there are no other ruins of the same proportion. But good options to visit are Teotenango, Cholula, Xochicalco or Tula.

I think nothing beats Teotihuacan, really. Taxco is ok but I expected more desu. After Teotihuacan I'd go for Tepotztlan (not to be confused with Tepotzotlan) check the town and go up the Tepozteco and then Cuernavaca to visit Xochicalco. It's an intense day and maybe you are better off with you own car but it's also diverse enough to compete with the other options.
