How do travel points work?

Basically, I'm planning a trip to Japan. Searching the dates on Google Flights, it'll cost $900 round trip (with free checked bags). When I search for flights where I can use my points, it ends up being way more expensive - it'd cost 80k+ points total, apparently a $1,120 value, with no checked bags. Is this normal or am I screwing up? I can't just buy the $900 trip and pay off a chunk with points (I didn't see an option for that)?

Re-reading, I should say I'm planning on using Air Canada, and was searching for flights directly on their site.
