Questions That Don't Deserve Their Own Thread
>also known as /sqt/ (Stupid Questions Thread)

For your quick one-off questions that pertain to travel.

If your question is long or convoluted, it might deserve its own thread.

If your question is specific to a popular destination, ask in a relevant thread/general instead.

Do people on /trv/ ever meet up on trips? I've seen plenty of anons on this board talking about how they struggle to meet anyone when they are travelling solo.
>>
I'm still struggling hard. Where the fuck do I go on my PTO? I only have around 7-9 days to fuck around. I'm technically gone for 2 weeks but the first week I'm going on a road trip with the boys. I'm from Toronto.
The locations I was thinking:
>Alberta
Gorgeous scenery, might be boring after the allure is gone.
>Japan
5 days + jet lag is going to fucking kill me. shit's dirt cheap though but I don't know if it's feasible right now
>London
Too expensive, bad weather, THEY LIVE THERE (trying to avoid THEM)
>Montreal
Not bad but a little too similar to Toronto where it feels a little wasteful.
>Staycation
I'm gonna fucking kms. I need some sort of way to socialize.
>Resort in Mexico/Cuba/Wherever
Seems a little gay as a young adult male but it does feel nice. Resort may be a little boring after the first few days though.
>New York
too fucking expensive
>>
>>2705633
With less than 9 days to fuck around with, I wouldn't do intercontinental at all. If you agree, we can scratch Japan and London off your list.

Looks like you've already convinced yourself Canada will be too boring, so we can rule out Alberta, Montreal, and a staycation in Toronto.

New York is too expensive as you've said, and you'd probably find it too similar to Toronto anyway.

By process of elimination, looks like Mexico/Cuba is the least shitty option from your list.

It does look like you're open to traveling south, since you've considered Mexico/Cuba at all. Have you considered these options:
>Texas
>Louisiana
>Florida
>Bahamas
>Dominican Republic
>>
>>2705644
I'll go take a look. I don't want to rent a car and USA doesn't really interest me but I should probably get out there. Mexico, Cuba and south america were near my bottom of my list desu. I really wanted to do those trip once I'm more comfortable with traveling.
>>
is it even possible to travel for cheap? even more, is it possible to stay at some touristic place for cheap without doing extensive research beforehand?
I've never been a person who travels much, but I've read many times that people do tricks like traveling for work and paying with their own credit cards to get discounts and stuff, or traveling long flights for cheap, but apparently the pandemic destroyed all of that, or maybe I'm just ignorant?
>>
>>2705658
Cheap travel is very possible but you can't have any serious obligations. If you have to fly to place A on date B, bonus points for high season, you're absolutely fucked. You want to pick your destination and dates based on what is the cheapest on offer. You also need a lot of time once you're there since you'll likely be using local transport, which is much slower than taxis and hired cars.
>is it possible to stay at some touristic place for cheap without doing extensive research beforehand
Define touristic. You can often stay at resorts for dirt cheap via last minute package holiday deals. Places with actual things to do? Not really, you'll need to pay with your time if you don't want to pay with your money.

Hi /trv/.

Im currently at conference in Toyama, Japan and my flight back (from Tokyo Narita airport) got delayed by one day. It's not a problem for me to extend stay and my company knows about situation already. This means I will have one whole day to travel around Tokyo. I would like to ask, what places in particular would you suggest to visit? It's my first time in Japan and probably last one since I'm not wealthy enough to afford such travels. So far, after flight and check in, when I had few hours free at evening and next day before train depart, I simply walked around Ueno and paid visit to National Museum, took photos at both day and night but just around that place. I'm mostly interested in historical places but also opportunities to took interesting photos, showing local atmosphere and culture, definitely not for shopping and such (many sites I saw basically recommended going shopping and eating, which is not very interesting for me).

Thanks for advices and help.

this is what i do
1. use aggregating websites (i use google flights) to find a flight you want. it will list the options from one place to another on your selected dates including the prices. play around with it a bit and just generally use this to find the flight you want to book
2. DO NOT book the flight through the third party/ aggregating site
3. go to the website of that airline of the flight you want to book, find the same flight through their own search system, and then book directly with them

if there's any problems with the flight (major delays, cancellations), and you booked it through a third party, the airline will either put you at the back of the line to rearrange things/ rebook you on another flight if you're lucky, or they'll just tell you to fuck off and sort it out through the third party you booked it on. no need to take the risk and give a third party all the kickbacks if they aren't giving you anything for it

i also use flightsfrom.com because you can easily see all the routes mapped out between airports and it has lots of filters so its helpful in researching and planning

What's the best way to aquire foreign currency? Should I order some euros from my bank before I actually go on my trip, or should I just wait till I get there and use an ATM?
>>
I'm going on a trip next April with the Mrs. to Norway for a music festival - and then to Iceland, Denmark and home from there. I'm from Australia, family were from Denmark originally, I don't speak any other language but English however.

Anything I should keep in mind? Or any obscure must-do's? Not really looking for any particular advice honestly, just interested in peoples opinions of travelling to those three places.
>>
>>2705633
If you haven't traveled much, I'd actually consider Cuba. Some travel agencies have packages split between a resort in Varadero and a few nights in Havana.
Great seafood, coffee, rum and cigars if any of that is your jam. There's some very decent day tours available as well, Vinales was very cool to see. There are adult only resorts but it isn't a social guarantee, you mostly trade young families for boomers.
I say it's good for a travel noob because it is less impressive compared to overseas places, but its decently safe and much more interesting than Mexico IMO.
Alberta is also worth a trip, but better to do around an event like Stampede. Easy to do day trips into the rockies from Calgary too.
>>
Is it worth visiting Iceland for a week in the winter if I dont want to rent a car? I mainly just want to chill in town and at hot springs, seems like there are a lot of buses.
>>

People who post anything related to their actual travels on this board get routinely mocked and shitted on by retarded NEETs who couldn't give two hoots about what faraway places are like. Why throw pearls before swine?
>>2707771
Depends on how far the arrival and departure terminals are from each other. If the other flight is also with Delta, you should have a higher chance of making the connection as other passengers will also be doing the same, so the departure should be delayed.
>>2707901
Depends on what your bank charges for foreign ATM withdrawals with your bank card.

My work booked a flight for me in business class through air canada. How do I make the most of it? I saw one site saying that food+drinks are unlimited, but does this include alcohol? Will I look like an asshole if I order 3+ meals and keep pinging the stewards for drinks? It’s a short ass flight (2 hours) but the money’s already been spent.

Alright, thank you.
Premium seat with food and drinks is something. I’d feel bad if drinks were included and I didn’t have some. I just wanted to make sure they aren’t going to offer stuff then charge the card used to buy the ticket.

How long does it usually take to get approved for one of these travel credit cards? I applied for one on Friday and have yet to receive any updates on my application status. Thing is my trip is only about a week away and I really don't want to have to pay any foreign transaction fees.

How fucked am I? What are the chances that my application will get accepted and my card will reach me in time for my trip?

For the record: I have really good credit (I pay all my shit on time), I have no debt currently, and I haven't applied for any other cc in years so there's no reason why my application shouldn't be accepted.

Yes, women get unlimited attention from simps, especially when traveling. No they don't get sick of it. Don't ask for her number though she isn't interested in you.
>>
>>2711196
Everyone travelling is in the same boat, they don't know anyone or anything. So you form groups. Where to meet them are in hostels, meetup groups, hangout areas where people gather. You'd just research this beforehand. Hostels suck but if you get a private room for a night or two to meet people then switch to a hotel you'll still have a group.

Depends when you're going and what constitutes one day. You can basically walk everywhere worthwhile, just the fortress you need to take the ferry and takes some time to go back and forth.
Sauna is a good bet. Löyly public sauna is apparently good, but pricey I think. Sompasauna is free and more "free" in a sense, that it's more chilled out people.

I used to post here a lot, even made threads about some adventures and such. There used be some really cool and unique threads about anons travels. Then the whoremongers came, shitted every thread. Still a lot of shitposts left I see, see >>2711420
Now I rarely even check /trv/ anymore. It's a shame. Would never want to meet one of these people traveling, they probably think shitposting here is just shitposting and really cool, but it's a good sign you're an unlovable insufferable cunt irl. Could go somewhere else to do it, like I do.

Walk along Mannerheimintie (the main street), past Stockmann, on to the big white church by the big square and from there to the market square and the Russian church. Take a walk back and forth along Esplanadi, visit the ferris wheel place if you want and take the ferry to Suomenlinna (the island fortress). Walk around there and hang out for a bit. Now you've seen almost everything Helsinki has to offer (I left out one popular newer church destination because it is a bit out of the way).
>>
>>2707901
Depends on country and your bank, but ATM if your bank gives you spot exchange rate (credit unions and banks like sofi generally do), also, make sure you use your banks exchange rate and not the ATM conversion rate, which will soak you for 10% or more
>>
>>2709786
>How fucked am I? What are the chances that my application will get accepted and my card will reach me in time for my trip?
0%. Cards take a week plus to get to you. A lot of CCs have no FTF tho, capital one quicksilver/savor, prime visa etc, check the cards you have, might already have one
>>
>>2711724
If you have a non-shit bank and also go to an ATM that's located at a bank (not inside a convenience store, hotel, strip club, etc.) you should get close enough to the spot rate to where the difference is negligible. Try to get a checking account that has no withdraw fees or fee reimbursement (I think I get 4 a month) up to $5.

I would show up with maybe 50 USD in local currency then withdraw as needed or convert $100 bills.
>>
>>2711727
Least in EU, the exchange rate at atms (including bank atms) was fucking awful(+10%), was only about 1% (including local ATM fee) using my banks (sofi) conversion rate
>>
>>2711578
So you met because you were crammed into a room together...
Guess what you're going to have to do again?
Hosteling isn't my jam either, but I'm old and dgaf about people much anymore.
If you're young and don't want to travel solo, do what this anon suggests
>>2711492
If you're really really hung up on the shared room thing, a lot of hostels have private rooms as well, just make sure they also have a bar or restaurant and you can still meet some people, but it's easier when you're in a bunk.
Remember that for the most part you're all there to do the same thing, explore!
Travel small talk flows a lot smoother than trying to chat up randos at home because you already know what your common interest is.

If I was to choose one city in Poland, then Krakow is a much better city to visit than Warsaw in basically every way
- Warsaw is more spread out, much more business focused, and the old town is fake and gay after being levelled in ww2. For museums there, there is the warsaw uprising museum (it has a free day idk which maybe Mondays) and the reconstructed palace in the old town
- Krakow survived the war so its old town is real. Has the Wawel castle and cathedral, and Czartoryski Museum has an interesting collection including a Da Vinci, Oskar Schindlers factory is there as a ww2 museum. There are greater options for nearby trips out - Wieliczka Salt Mine, Auschwitz, Zakopane

Does anyone have experience with staying in Venice Mestre and commuting into the Old Town?
Is it similar to other commutes in big cities in the off-season? (getting pushed into stuffed vehicles, nowhere to sit, smelly, etc.)

Yes, hookers.
It's a rather boring and ugly city. There's a couple unremarkable temples, Tuol Sleng prison and one of the trillion killing fields. Royal Palace too, though it was closed when I was there so no idea if it's worth visiting. I guess you can wander the streets a bit to see the markets or go on a poverty tour outside the city center. There's fuck all to do otherwise but whore around and get wasted. It's telling that 90% of "tourists" you'll meet there are grey old males.

I need to go to a country to change money into their currency but only Coins. Is this possible?
>>
What do you guys recommend for money on international trips in another currency? Going to Canada from Belgium

My current bank has pretty high fees for both withdrawals and payments. Considering checking if they allow me to order cad cash, but that kinda seems scary to carry around as well. Seen mentions of Wise and Revolut, which have great exchange rates, but also seen horror stories about lack of customer support about both
>>
>>2716754
Do you have a credit card that doesn't have a foreign transaction fee? What fees are there if you use a debit card at a Canadian ATM? I'm American and my Amazon Prime Visa card has no annual fee and no foreign transaction fee. You might just want to apply for a credit card with no annual fee or foreign transaction fee, if that's an option for you.
When I went to Europe last year, I was able to order Euros from my bank before I left, albeit with a shit exchange rate. When I ran out of cash, I used an ATM in Paris. The exchange rate was much better.
>>
>>2716756
>When I went to Europe last year, I was able to order Euros from my bank before I left, albeit with a shit exchange rate.
NTA but how bad was it? The last time I ordered foreign currency from my bank before leaving for a trip, I paid maybe like 4% more than the actual market exchange rate at the time. For what it's worth, had I went to an actual currency exchange shop, it would've been worse. I'm just asking so I can get a frame of reference here.
>>
>>2716760
This was TD Bank. The exchange rate on that date was $1.066 USD/EUR.I paid $1.13 USD/EUR, which is a bargain compared to the $1.30+ USD/EUR at the currency shops and airports. This month, I ordered more. The exchange rate at the time was $1.10 USD/EUR and I ended up paying $1.17 USD/EUR, plus a $7.50 transaction fee.
I don't remember how much cash I got in Paris last year, but I checked my bank statement and it shows a $106 and change debit, which would be about 100 Euros at then-current market rates.

>>2716754
If you have extra CAD when you go to leave, see if you can use it for your lodging. That way you won't have to exchange it back if you don't plan on holding onto CAD.
>>
>>2716756
The best card I could get is 1.6% for payments and 6€+1.6% for withdrawals. Slightly better than the 2% on both (plus an additional 0.6€ fee on every payment) that my debit card has but still far from ideal

>>2716767
I actually looked at TD bank's fees a little because I'm going to a buddy and was considering just doing a wire transfer in euros to him and have him exchange it in his bank, which seemed a good option until I found out my bank doesn't allow wire transfers outside of the SEPA (or maybe some other collection of euro countries, I forgot)

Bros help me out here. I'm trying to decide whether to pull the trigger on a trip to Europe. I've only ever been to Japan and Singapore as an adult. I loved Japan during the winter so I decided I want to go to Europe in Jan Feb. It's kind of close so I have to start looking at booking stuff now. I'm thinking 4 weeks in central Europe. Switzerland > Austria > Hungary > Czechia. How likely is snow in mid Jan to mid Feb? I feel like I'm rushing things but I'm getting old and I have the money to travel. I want to experience some history before I die Australia is such a cultural backwater.

I spent 16 months travelling wondering why I could never get hotel wifi login screens up on my laptop and so always just used my phone as a hotspot. Pretty obvious, feeling a bit retarded, also I used to be a software developer and should definitely know better so I'll just pretend this never happened
>>
>>2717383
Yeah, simply for the flight prices it would be better to book more then half a year in advance. Flying all the way over from Australia to Yurop and back probably wont be cheap.

But as the other anon said, going to alpine countries will get you snow guaranteed.
Maybe skip Switzerland as it is pretty expensive and include Southern Germany or Alsace instead.
Its an experience you dont want to miss

What is a reasonable daily budget for slow travel around Europe? This would mean everything excluding the flights to and from the US. I’m going to get laid off sometime next year. With my savings, severance package, and selling a bunch of my shit I will have around $60k USD, probably more. I’m not sure how far that would get me? I’m okay to do some hosteling but would prefer to have a private room most nights.
>>
>>2717554
I've been researching my own 1 month trip and it came up around $6000. This was with mid range hotel rooms every night. I'm too autistic to stay in hostels and I've heard a lot are having trouble with bedbugs at the moment.
>>
>>2717557
Holy shit that’s way more expensive than I expected.
>>

I should say this is with eating out for every meal as well as entry to a bunch of tourist places so you could probably get it down a bit. Europe is a lot more expensive than somewhere like Japan though.
>>
I don't know if this is the right thread but really stressed out worker here and I took a two week vacation to go traveling. I'm solo travelling and I kinda....regret it. I'm getting insanely homesick. I picked a location in the middle of nowhere with not a lot of stuff to do. It's an hour walk to get to society and I'm just feeling kinda bummed out. I told myself it would be sweet to see nature and stuff but I can't seem to get myself into it.... I just want to see my dogs again... maybe it's my fault. I recently went to a good friend of mine's wedding and that awakened feelings in me that I haven't had in a long while (hatred, jealousy, loneliness) and this trip happened right after so I'm just a fucking mess.
>>
>>2717580
How long have you been there? I always get really homesick the first few days. I took 2 weeks off at a cottage in some rural town in the middle of nowhere to just read books and enjoy nature. It took a while to get into it. When you go from the city to somewhere rural it takes some time to adjust. Pretty normal I think, especially if you're someone who's a bit anxious and neurotic.

>how likely am I to find women in dhaka to share a drink with me
Bangladeshi women? Alcoholic drinks? 0% likely; they don’t drink and aren’t allowed in bars. Although alcohol is manufactured and sold there (to foreigners and infidels), consumption rates are really low even by Islamic standards—something like 98% of Bangladeshi women are lifelong teetotalers, and men aren’t much drunker. Booze is noticeably more popular in both Pakistan and even Iran, where it’s also absolutely haram and generally (or in Iran’s case, completely) illegal.

Your odds aren’t really better if you’re talking about Bangladeshi women and soft drinks; they don’t go out alone with men in public. Socializing with locals one-on-one takes place behind closed doors if it takes place at all.

If you’re looking to get drinks with bored foreign women, on the other hand, it’s a helluvalot more likely. I visited briefly for work, and know a number of people who work there long-term, and they near-universally describe Dhaka as a dull place to live. In response, more than a few drink too much.

>What is a reasonable daily budget for slow travel around Europe?
It’s going to vary more than a bit by region, how and what you want to eat, how much traveling between cities/countries you expect to do, and what kinds of entertainment you’re going for.

In all but a small number of countries and cities (Scandinavia and Switzerland are very expensive; London is weirdly steep; accommodations in Amsterdam are overpriced; Paris can be an expensive place to eat or sleep, but doesn’t have to be; etc,), European prices average out similar to American prices, at worst. Most of Southern and Eastern Europe is noticeably cheaper, apart from islands/resort towns in their high seasons. Americans always seem to expect Europe to be expensive, but for most things in most places, it isn’t. People just spend more because they’re eating out all the time and filling their days with stuff that has to be paid for.

>t. American who’s been living and traveling in Europe for the last six years

I have a buddy in Canada and it's just astounding how big the differences are in prices. Frequently, even taking into account the different currencies, grocery items here will be like 2-3x cheaper than there.

Costs are $120/day for room, food and basic needs on top of that comes transportation + entry fees + fun so $200/day is a solid calculation (make it 400 for Switzerland, South Tirol and Munich).

>>
>>2718534
>She made Belgium sound like it had bike trails that would go between all the major cities.
I think she was talking about the "fietsknooppunten"/bike nodes, see
https://www.fietsnet.be/routeplanner/default.aspx
https://www.fietsknooppunt.be/nl-be/fietsen/knooppunten/routeplanner
https://www.nodemapp.com/en/biking/nodes/routeplanner/belgium/a1-1
(might need to zoom in)

Bike paths have intersections & you can basically create a route through a list of these and they are decently marked (in my opinion) along the paths.

I might be biased but it's really fucking nice. There are also "premade" bike paths using this in case you don't want to plan them yourself, both ones meant for smaller trips or ones meant to travel across several countries, I think I've even seen some of these main routes marked by the road at each intersection as well

Please don't buy shoes online, just go to local stores & try some. Most likely if they're comfortable and fit well and stocked by an actual store at a reasonable price, you'll be pretty well served by them

>>
>>2718905
>Can I get an international driving permit in a state different than where my drivers license is from?
Yes, you can get them (among other places) anywhere with a AAA office; they’re not an official government document issued by a DMV. But they’re seldom actually necessary in my experience.
>>
>>2718950
>What is the best city in italy for daily life living?

Lucca, in Tuscany. My wife and I seriously considered moving there for a bit, one of the only Italian cities that had that effect on us. It’s small, so it’s not your hustle-and-bustle big city experience (for that I would say you should just move to Rome or Milan; have friends living in both who love them, although it’s not my bag), but it’s very comfortable, and not too far from bigger cities (Florence or Siena).

If you just want some everyday sneakers/trainers, it’s worth considering adding some insoles to make extensive walking more viable—most brands are pretty terrible for arch support, especially Converse in my experience. You may need to go half a size up.

They’re very, very uncool, but I have found that Rockport shoes are unusually comfortable for walking. I also once had a bizarre pair of sneakers made by Birkenstock, the sandal company, that I found in an outlet store; these looked stupid (very wide toe), but were extremely comfortable.

Is it too late to book a Europe trip for Mid Jan? It's off season and the prices look fine but I've never been so I don't have anything to compare it to. Everyone I know tells me it's way too close and I'm going t get ripped off.
>>
>>2719057
The only area where prices can sometimes be much worse if you book too late is airfares, and even that’s not guaranteed. Booking hotels last-minute can leave you with fewer choices, which can (but doesn’t have to) wind up more expensive, but there’s rarely much cost advantage to booking farther in advance.

If you like the prices you’re seeing and you want to go, there’s little reason not to go. Weather in Europe in January is mostly pretty lousy, though.
>>
>>2719060
Thanks, I guess people where I live it have it ingrained in their head that you have to book way in advance because I live on the arse end of the world and airfares take up such a large chunk of the expenses.
I'm going to Austria and Czechia mostly so I was hoping for a bit of snow in Austria at least. I don't mind the cold and the short days as long as it doesn't rain every day I'll be happy.

>I'm going to Austria and Czechia mostly so I was hoping for a bit of snow in Austria at least.
If it’s a decent winter in terms of snowfall and you go to anywhere at elevation, Austria should satisfy.
>I don't mind the cold and the short days as long as it doesn't rain every day I'll be happy.
It’s a little bit of a gamble—I’ll be surprised if it doesn’t rain on you at least once, but it’s very unlikely to be daily.

How do you guys handle solo travel? I'm usually okay for a few days but near the tailend and even a bit in the beginning, I'm always anxious. I try meeting new people but I struggle holding a conversation. My head goes blank whenever people ask me anything and I usually only go on vacation when I'm severly depressed so I can't even think of valid answers to when people ask me why I'm on a vaction (so i don't fucking shoot myself in the head if bob asks me for a status update on a project again). I always end up my trips just as alone as I ever was. Doesn't really help I see couples around. If living life normally outside vacation is just me angry depressed than vacation me is just sad depressed. I still feel a good 6/10 though compared to the 3/10 I feel at home but fuck the loneliness sucks....
>>
>>2719093
You might like to add Freiburg, just east of Colmar; the Swiss leg will be very expensive, as I hope you know; in Switzerland I would say there’s little reason for most people to want to visit Basel, although it has points of niche interest and I rate it very highly as a place to live (I live here). Some will yell that all Swiss cities should be skipped, but I don’t agree—Bern, Lausanne, and Geneva all have enough of interest to sustain a day or so of poking around. But if you have to cut destinations, the Swiss ones are good places to start. If you only stop in one of the Swiss cities on your route, Lausanne is probably the best choice.
>>
>>2719098
I dunno what to say other than you get used to it. I'm lonely at home most of the time anyway. Society makes us think that we should meet people when we travel but when I finally realised I hate people and don't want to deal with them I started to enjoy solo travel. I just want to look at nice scenery and buildings. I don't want to go clubbing or hang our with randoms.
>>
>>2719064
Thanks. My usual destinations are in Asia so I'm used to rain. I can just adjust my itinerary once I have the weather forecast so I'm doing indoors stuff on rainy days anyway. I just hope I get some snow. I love snow.

I guess. I'm technically more extroverted but I don't know what happened. After school I've became a lot more lonely and developed a pretty bad hedgehog type syndrome where I just won't bother with people since I'll get paranoid they're talking shit about me or they'll think I'm weird. I don't mind clubbing or hanging out with randoms but I rarely get a chance to actually talk to people. If I do talk to people it's either really small pleasentries or they'll just chuckle and be like "idgaf" none of my conversations ever feel good unless it's a very very rare occasion.

Perhaps not the perfect board for it, but I don't know what is

What type of earplugs do you guys like? My dad tends to use wax and sometimes uses foam but I've never really used them before. However going on a trip soon where reviews say there's quite a bit of noise during the night so I might need to get some myself.
I've noticed people recommending Mack's ultra soft (which are foam) but at the same time I've seen people say silicon is way nicer than foam.
I initially planned to just use my items but I've found on a recent flight it can start to irritate my ear canal after having them in for like 3-4h
>>

>>
>>2719124
>there's really no happy medium to this huh.
I think most places are more medium than you seem to find them. I enjoy cities, personally, and am comfortable navigating my way around the parts that suck; I’ve also had great times in small towns in a bunch of countries—smaller Italian towns, littler/less crowded bits of both Asia and Europe. Large chunks of the Balkans are really friendly. Greeks and Turks are both really nice when they’re not trying to sell you something. It’s always a question of balancing positive and negative aspects, and figuring out if the pros in one particular place outweigh the cons. If they don’t, move on.
>Is japan actually a decent place to visit where you can vibe with people and people AREN't assholes?
Japan is great in a lot of ways—very clean, convenient, safe, functional. But I’m not sure what you expect when you talk about ‘vibing with people’—making friends? Being treated politely? The Japanese are famously introverted, for the most part, so very few people are going to be outgoing with, or much interested in, foreign strangers. But they’re more than likely to be courteous, especially superficially.

I've got the same thing and if anything I pretty much travel with a "friend" or two or three and not technically solo and it doesn't change shit, despair kicks in eventually. Didn’t wanna start a whole thread for this question so posting in here.

Going to Long Island, NY to visit my inlaws for 6 days next month. I will be provided with a place to stay as well as a vehicle to drive (i will just be responsible for gassing it up) and our flight has already been paid for. We may go into the city one day of this trip but that is still undecided.

Plan is to see family, do some sightseeing and just explore. It will be my wife, myself and my 1 year old.

Now the question. I set aside $1500 to do everything that we may want to do for the 6 days up there. Speaking with my wife and my inlaws, they told me that is no where near enough for a week up there. I spoke with my family, and they told me that 1500 dollars for a week anywhere is a lot of money if I am not paying for rentals/lodging.

Has anyone been to this area to tell me if i am far off? Or do i need more cash to bring? Any insight is greatly appreciated as i do not travel very often.
>>
>>2719353
What I remember about NY $1500 for a week for two is about the average backpacker budget. so rather on the low side. You can get around but you won't go shopping or eat in any better restaurant.
Attractions are about $30-50 a pop per person, Parking downtown is $5-10 per hour, food can be had for $20 per person but once you go to a nice sit down restaurant it's easy $100 per person, beer in Bars are $7-12 per pint, domestic big brands (Miller, Bud..) about $6 per can, cocktails start at $12-15 outside of happy hours and cigs are $17 per package.

Not anything significant. Drink and food prices drop a bit but you still have the sight and anything fun prices.
NYC kinda matches the Zurich, Switzerland tier price table. If you go above the pizza slice/hotdog/mcdicks food tier and want to enjoy the city you will bleed money fast and hard.

$1500 will cut it for sure, but my estimate for a really good time is kiss goodbye another $1500 right now. Do all the things, don't hold back on dining and if you have money left well done or take the misses on a night central park coach ride with it and enjoy your special bonus sex later.

I will land in Hanoi in December (already booked), I will move on about once a week, I am not backpacking, I don't ride motorbikes. Tried to go for a bit of variety through Vietnam at least.
Thoughts?

Some parts of upstate New York have a weird dialect. For example, in Albany they call burgers "steamed hams." The dialect is also fragmented, so other parts, like Utica, don't use the same terminology.

It's some sort of guided tour thing so I don't think there will be a ton of walking, nor will there be any real wilderness hiking, I'm not the one setting it up so I don't have very intimate knowledge about it. I think it will be a lot of bus travel. I've got a plug converter on my list of things to buy.

How does this general itinerary sound for a 4 week trip in Europe? This would be my first time going (from US)
Rome - 7 days
Travel - 1 day
Florence - 3 days
Travel - 1 day
Bologna - 3 days
Travel - 1 day
Venice - 3 days
Travel - 1 day
Innsbruck - 2 days
Travel - 1 day
Munich - 4 days
>>
>>2720215
What the fuck is with some people and trying to see way too much at once with limited time? And even then you pick Rome, that absolute shithole, to spend a week in? Also like "travel 1 day" and it's a 2 hour(or shorter) train hop between italian cities, lmao. Here's what you're going to do. You're going to spend 3 or 4 days in Rome. Then you move to Florence where you have accommodation for 10 days minimum. You rent a fucking car or a motorcycle after day 3 or 4. Empoli, San Gimignano, Lucca, Pisa, Bologna, Monteriggioni, Siena, and so many others are an hour or two away. And you don't fucking use the toll roads because you don't see anything while driving on them. After that 10 days or so, you go to Venice for anything between 3 and 6 days. Get the vaporetto pass. Mazzorbo, Torcello, Burano, Pellestrina and the outer parts of Venice itself, like the back of Castello are the best places in the city. If you absolutely have to see Rialto and San Marco, wake up at 6am for a morning stroll, because you will literally suffocate there at any later time. The rest of your itinerary looks fine but even then like 2 days in Innsbruck? Are you in a hurry or some shit?
>>
>>2720108
If that map is representative of the itinerary then all you need is appropriate clothing. It could easily rain the whole time. Although east coast tends to be drier but windier. (Being Scottish really is shite). If you get freak good weather then the midgies could possibly make an appearance but you can buy insect repellant everywhere.

Only thing would be if you want to attempt one of the larger mountains - summit conditions in late autumn can be actually dangerous and you’d need proper preparation.
>>
>>2720215
>Rome - 7 days
?
I liked Rome but you really don't need that long to see the highlights of it
>traveling 1 day each time
?

Other anon has good advice, too often people try to hit "hot spots" and forget to just take things easy and roam around in the nearby areas and just explore. In my opinion the best vacations are the ones where you get to both see the busy tourist hotspots and at the same time get to just take in the smaller towns and the nature

>How does this general itinerary sound for a 4 week trip in Europe?
cramped and you get burned out
>Rome
>Florence
>Bologna
all fine destinations, but unless you are REALLY interested in art, architecture or history you'll have enough after a few days

you didn't specify what you wanna do there
but as a general guideline
>don't do the same thing more than 2 days in row
e.g. after 2 days sightseeing / museum plan a Spa / beach day or go hiking

>Venice - 3 days
too long
Venice is small
2, max. 3 nights are plenty depending on when you arrive / leave
highlight are seen within a day, especially when you directly sleep in venice with no commute
you only need one more day for Museums (other than Ducale), Murano trip or special events

>Innsbruck - 2 days
if you include hiking, sounds fine
if you just want to do sightseeing, 3 nights are probably too much

>Munich - 4 days
as someone who lived in Munich
what in the world are you planning to do for 4 days in Munich???
It's a great place to live, but I struggle to even fill a weekend of things to do when friends visited me

>1 day of travel each
that a looot of time
Rome - Florence / Innsbruck - Munich are 1:30h by train
Florence - Bologna is only ~30min by train
Main stations are all central in these cities, that's barely half a day of travel
you can safely plan the other half if you take early / late connections

>>2720291
7 days for rome is appropriate imo
if you don't rush it and are interested in history, completely reasonable on a relaxed schedule
>>
>>2720343
>Venice - 3 days

Do tell you've never been there other than as a day tripper, or worse, a cruise passenger.

been in Venice itself only for 1 night a couple of other times later
>or worse, a cruise passenger
god forbid!
>Are you an actual Lazio tourist office glowie?
kek
just a kraut
stayed in Rome (last Winter) for 8 nights and really enjoyed it
though I really like to take my time in Museums (i.e. half a day) and fine dining every evening cuts into time budget as well
>>
>>2720382
The best part about Venice isn't even Venice itself but the outer islands, that's why you need the vaporetto pass. Sant'Erasmo, Pellestrina etc are surprisingly sovlful places, probably because they're not overrun by the hordes.
>>
>>2720383
Pellestrina was nice, never been to Sant'Erasmo
the whole lagoon has a lot of cool spots

but arguably the most impressive part is venice itself

and if you are not from Europe and don't expect to come back anytime soon, it's understandable that you go for the "highlights"
unless you are not specifically looking to see small Italian towns, 6 days are a LOT in the Venice area

and there are other spots in the region that are more worthwhile like Verona, the Dolomites, Vicenza, Treviso etc. (all in the Veneto region)

>probably because they're not overrun by the hordes
true, but if you want to see venice you just have to deal with this for a day or two

I finally broke my rut and travelled this year (first time ever). Picked something close and cheap (Poland) and my motivations weren't some divine wanderlust you guys felt, but just getting out the house.
What I'm surprised about is how lonely it felt. I went with a friend, so I wasn't actually alone, but overall, I don't think I spoke to a single person in 4 days I was there, in a real way (service workers and hotel staff don't count).
I didn't expect some crazy adventures, because we were mostly just walking around town, winging it, but it's still kinda crazy I didn't meet or talk to anyone.
Are you guys just good at striking up conversations, know when or where to? Have you ever travelled with someone locals weren't receptive to?
>>
>>2720387
>and if you are not from Europe and don't expect to come back anytime soon, it's understandable that you go for the "highlights"
Fair enough and something I tend to forget with our cheap(ish) and short flights. Been to Italy twice this year and going again soon.
>>
>>2720399
>but it's still kinda crazy I didn't meet or talk to anyone.
did you actually try to talk to anyone yourself?

for most people, socializing only happens in very narrowly constraint settings
like your workplace, school class, university class, hobby group etc. (just think about where you met your friends)
without such a structured environment its MUCH harder to socialize

>travelled with someone locals weren't receptive to?
locals don't care about you
unless you strike up an conversation and become interesting

I think you just had the wrong perception on how you meet new people traveling - everyone has to learn this one way or another

socializing is always something proactive
next time try to talk to the people sitting next to you in a bar
or get into a conversation when waiting for public transport
just get talking to people, even if it's just a short banter
talking to strangers is a skill you have to train, like any other skill too
>>
>>2720406
>did you actually try to talk to anyone yourself?
I guess not, I was close to a few times, but the body language seemed off. It makes perfect sense that they don't want to talk to me until I've proven I'm actually interesting, thanks for that.

Italy is a nice destination, but going for 4weeks to Europe for the first time, why do you want to spend almost all your time in Italy only? This seems to strange.
Why not a week (or two) in Italy, Spain, Germany, whatever, so you got a good mixture of different cultures, the food and nationalities?

I personally have been to both Bologna and Innsbruck and liked those cities but multiple days is way too much for them. You walk around and enjoy the flair, but this is done in a single day and you dont have much else to do there for the rest.

Finally, there is a great public transportation network in all those countries, so you dont really need a seperate stay in Bologna or Florence, you get there easy enough from Rome. The same counts for Munich to Innsbruck (unless you want to go hiking in the mountains, but then just book a room for Innsbruck and go with a train for a day to Munich instead)
>>
>>2720399
Did you speak the language? If you don't, I can imagine it feels very lonely.
I've very rarely traveled to places where I didn't speak the native language and even then it was in touristy places where people have a decent grasp of English (not my native language).
Recently went to Canada and didn't really have issues having small conversations with random people around.
>>
I would like to travel for the first time but I read you need a credit card when checking into hotels for a security deposit? If i only have a virtual debit card and cash can i still travel? I can pay flights/hotels just fine through booking.com or similar site and pay for everything in cash during the trip but am i fucked with no credit card or am i worried about nothing?
>>
>>2720399
If you're normally socially anxious don't expect that to suddenly change when you go on holiday. I was in Japan for 6 weeks last year and I barely spoke to anyone the whole time I was there. I enjoyed it, one of the benefits of not speaking the language is I have an excuse not to talk to people. Some people get this idea that they are going to reinvent themselves on holiday but you can't change who you are over night. If you don't leave the house or talk to people much at home there's probably a reason for that and it isn't going to ho away when you visit a different country. That's okay though, personally I enjoy solo travel where I just look at stuff and people watch. Vapid meaningless conversations just distract me.

Flying via the Middle East so hopefully things don't escalate anymore in the next few months.

How frequently do you guys eat on vacation ? Everyday 3/ ? Starting to think that depending on the country it's just that not worth it
>>
>>2720905
>How frequently do you guys eat on vacation ? Everyday 3/ ?
It depends on where I’m staying, personally—if I’m in a hotel with breakfast included, I’m likely to eat more for breakfast than I normally do. I may then skip lunch. If I’m self-catering I may skip breakfast. But I always eat at least twice a day.
>Starting to think that depending on the country it's just that not worth it
As long as you’re not risking malnutrition or dangerous hypoglycemia (and you’re almost certainly not), there’s no reason you have to eat three meals every day if you don’t want to. I know a couple of people who basically subsist on small snacks rather than large meals, and they seem okay. They’re sort of health-freaky, though, so they’re not living on candy and pot noodles; that seems like it would catch up with you sooner or later.
>>
>>2720905
Eat or eat out? I try to minimize the amount of times I eat out if possible, breakfast you can usually get cheaply by getting a bread or cornflakes or might be offered by hotel/bnb, but it might worth eating out if it's exceptional (I went for breakfast p much every morning in London). Lunch/dinner I just try to find a few exceptional and reasonably priced places where I'm visiting that I want to try out. Last trip for example, I hit up Jollibee's, a popular poutine food truck and a KBBQ place

As for just having meals at all, I have 2-3 a day just like I do at home. I'm not going to fucking starve myself if I can help it. Just buy some shit so you can make simple meals relatively cheaply where you're staying

This is an old age question but what would you all do if someone close to you/a loved one passes away while you're traveling? Like even before the trip or at the start of it? Morally the obvious choice is to cancel the trip but then again you will incur a lot of cancellation fees/etc unless you have good insurance.
>>
>>2721257
Scotland can be done cheaply but not normally at short notice. accom and rail probably main expenses. You'll have to price it up and see if it is in budget. the trains do go a lot of places thanks to the victorian tartan madness they had when they invented railways. hire cars can also be surprisingly cheap, you only need a little 2wd thing.

main problem you have is the weather. the forecast for corrour (the remote rail station from that film) looks miserable for the next few days. So you can go there but you probably won't like it. If the weather was better then yes highlands definitely worth it; lots of good hiking around Corrour and everywhere else when you're not in the pissing rain

Edinburgh and Glasgow both good for a night out, Glasgow probably a bit better

I'd save up some cash and go in the spring / summer desu

How do anons decide where to go? I have a few weeks free during the end of year/new year holidays. Don't know where to go, don't want to stay at home. I want to see the world before my bones get old.
>>
>>2722770
>How do anons decide where to go?
I have a few patterns; I have a rough running list of places I haven’t been yet in my head all the time. When I have time for a trip on the horizon, I’ll think about weather/etc., and if it seems like a good time to go to one of the places on my list, I’ll do it. But I also take stuff like ticket prices into account—if flights to a place on my list seem expensive, I might pick somewhere cheaper. I am lucky to be living in a Central European spot with lots of budget airline options, so I have on more than a few occasions taken last-minute trips based mostly on cheap airfares, more or less spontaneously; this isn’t a realistic option for most travelers, but I have had fun with it.

In the end, there’s always an element of just pulling the trigger and going; if you want to go everywhere, just go somewhere and see what happens. Go somewhere else the next time.
>>
>>2722770
My main thing is browsing flight and accommodation sites obsessively about once a week. If I see a cheap trip, I'll pull the trigger and don't really care about the destination. I've ended up in shithole countries like Moldova, Kazakhstan and Armenia like that, but despite being shithole countries, they usually have some pretty nice landscapes and historical shit. Sometimes, with luck, I've stumbled to some pretty typical tourist destinations too for piss all with low season prices. My job doesn't really allow super long trips, but I try to target 3-10 day trips and preferably for less than 50€ per day for accomodation and flights. Yes that's a bit high but I'm too old for hostels.
>>
>>2722770
I just think about places that look nice or cultures seem interesting

You're not gonna like the answer, but the "rip off the Band-Aid" approach works well. Every new thing you try comes with some level of discomfort.

>I'm worried that I'll feel lonely when I'm actually there... this will lead me to waste this beautiful free time playing video games..
Try not to pack anything that lets you play video games, be it an actual video game console, a laptop, a tablet, etc. The only exception should be your smartphone.
Avoiding video arcades should be pretty easy outside of east Asia, they seem to be dying out in most other regions.
If you don't know how to fill your time other than video games, just walk around aimlessly. Sit on a bench every so often. Try to have a camera with you. It's not as boring as it sounds. It's a different culture, you might see something that actually fascinates you through random happenstance.

>>2723056
>I'm also anxious about activities like going to eat alone
Surprisingly, not that big of an issue. Depending on the culture, it's even heavily normalized. My biggest issue with solo dining is when a menu is clearly designed for multiple people, so it's more of a technical issue than a social issue.

Traveling to the UK from the US in December, don't have a flight yet. First time traveler on a plane. I'm obese, and I've already decided to buy a second seat on whatever airline I take so that some poor fucker doesn't get stuck wedged between me and the window seat or something. The problem is, I can't figure out how to secure a second seat. JetBlue is the only airline where I can enter my details then indicate that the second seat is for me, all others want me to input a second traveler's information, but JetBlue won't work for me because between the ticket prices and being on 4 different airplanes, it's not feasible financially or with my timetable.

I'm going to try to book a direct flight and so far the best option moneywise is with Virgin Atlantic but I don't know how to book a second seat for myself with them and Google isn't helping at all.

TL;DR do any other fatanons know how I would go about booking an extra seat so no one has to sit next to my fat ass
>>
>>2723198
>TL;DR do any other fatanons know how I would go about booking an extra seat so no one has to sit next to my fat ass

Not personally obese, but this is a good time to remember that in-person customer service numbers are still a thing with airlines; it’ll be annoying, you will be on hold for a very long time, and depending on the airline, they may even charge you extra to speak with a human, but call the airline. They will set you up.

While you’re at it, you should compare the price of buying two seats with the price of business class—two seats will almost certainly be your cheaper option, but you might as well check. An enormous friend of mine (6something, 300something) who flies a lot is perfectly comfortable in biz.
>>
>>2723198
You will have much better luck with special requests if you go through a call centre, most (all?) websites aren’t built around this circumstance. Unfortunately takes forever and web only prices not available.

What you actually want is ozempic / mounjaro / whatever. My former life as a fatass is but a distant memory now

Do you guys eat out for every meal in Europe? I've been to Japan a few times and I ate our every meal, it was great. It seems like eating out in Europe is a lot more expensive though and to be honest I'm not as excited about the food there as I am for food in Asia. How many times can I eat Wiener Schnitzel and chips before I get sick of it? If you don't eat out, what do you do? Just get some shit from the supermarket and eat it in your hotel room?
>>
>>2723216
>It seems like eating out in Europe is a lot more expensive
>Europe
You retards can never specify what country you're talking about huh. If you're in Bulgaria, everything is cheap as piss, but yeah might a different story in Switzerland.
>>
>>2723216
>Do you guys eat out for every meal in Europe?

I live in Europe and travel here a lot, but most often with my family (me, wife, 2 adolescent kids). So in most places we visit, we rent an apartment and eat either breakfast or dinner in on at least some days. We pretty much always have lunch out.

When I’m traveling alone in Europe, I eat out most of the time, but I rarely eat more than two meals per day. Sometimes I will eat lunch, sometimes breakfast, seldom both.
>>
>>2723216
Yea, sandwiches and bottled water. Panini 4 Fromages
>>
>>2723216
>Do you guys eat out for every meal in Europe?
I almost always eat out for every meal when I travel anywhere, not just Europe.

>to be honest I'm not as excited about the food there as I am for food in Asia.
I used to feel the same way. If you want a more unique dining experience, you will unfortunately have to put more legwork in finding it. If your heritage is European, or if you come from a country with Europesque cuisine, of course finding excitement will take a little more effort.

One thing I like to do is find dishes that I normally can't get back in my home country. I can easily find schnitzel, fish & chips, pizza, etc. back home. However, it's a lot harder for me to find paella, schweinshaxe, fondue, etc. back home, so I try to focus on the "unobtainable" when I'm traveling.

Another thing I like to do is try alternative versions of classic dishes. I've had schnitzel countless times, but I've had cordon bleu schnitzel only once. Bratwurst is nothing new, but I can find a lot more variations of it in Germany.

Just because you're in Europe doesn't mean you have to eat European. While I strongly recommend eating the native cuisine, if you really are tired of it, you can eat something else. When I was in the Netherlands, I gave Dutch food an earnest try, but I eventually gave into Indonesian food, Ethiopian food, Chinese food, and even McDonald's.

>If you don't eat out, what do you do? Just get some shit from the supermarket and eat it in your hotel room?
Once again, it's rare for me to not eat out, but when it happens, I've been known to partake in the supermarket. Visiting a supermarket should be something you do anyway, even if it's not to buy a meal. It's always fun to see what's locally available, and what flavors their snacks and drinks come in. I've fallen in love with Germany's bread and the waldmeister flavoring of their sweets.
I've also ordered room service directly from the hotel, and even ate at the hotel's in-house restaurant.
>>
>>2723235
>When I was in the Netherlands, I gave Dutch food an earnest try, but I eventually gave into Indonesian food, Ethiopian food, Chinese food, and even McDonald's.

I think the Netherlands is a particularly good place to eat postcolonial/ethnic food (not least because indigenous Dutch cuisine mostly sucks unless you have a herring boner, although I concede that they do a good pea soup). Surinamese-Chinese? Why not?

I also second your suggestion of supermarkets—they’re fun even if you’re not self-catering, and they can almost always be cheap even in expensive countries. And I don’t like McDonald’s, personally, but it is interesting to compare local offerings. Burgers with Raclette/other local cheeses, fried halloumi w/truffle mayonnaise/etc.
>>
>>2723219
I've visiting 14 countries over 3 months you want me to list them all and you can answer separately for each one?
>>
>>2723260
Well yes! Or at least give me a general area. If you're mostly in southern and/or eastern europe, then absolutely yes you should eat out a lot. It's not terribly expensive and eating out is an essential part of the culture. However the further north you go the less I recommend it.
>>
>>2723221
>>2723235
Thanks, I'll probably just get something light for breakfast and lunch from a supermarket or bakery then eat out for dinner.

>>2723216
>If you don't eat out, what do you do? Just get some shit from the supermarket and eat it in your hotel room?

I eat out like 1 time and then hate it because its too expensive
>>
>>2723194
Yeah, I think I'll just have to force myself as you're saying.

But I didn't mean that I'll spend my vacation playing video games, just this free time between graduation and getting a job. I'm just playing games instead of travelling right now, even though I'd love to at least try to travel a bit...
I also have my mother putting doubts into me, telling me "What will you DO when you go alone?!". She worries a lot about everything also...

>I also have my mother putting doubts into me, telling me "What will you DO when you go alone?!". She worries a lot about everything also...
My own mother is like that, too. A mother truly never stops worrying, but a big part of adulthood is making your own decisions. If you don't do it now, you'll only regret it later. You sound like you're in your early 20s. If you keep pushing this back, you'll be in your mid-20s, late-20s, 30s, etc. without having traveled. To me that's a lot scarier than seeing the world alone. Like one of my favorite teachers used to say "Take chances, make mistakes, get messy."

As for "what will you DO," almost anything will be better than inaction. No matter what you actually end up doing abroad, almost anything is better than sitting around at home playing video games. Even if all you end up doing is take a silly photo of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, it's still better than nothing.

Also, the feeling of loneliness might actually end up being a breath of fresh air to you. Yes, traveling alone means your friends and girlfriend aren't there with you, but it also means your mother isn't there. You might find the relative peace & quiet to be a relief, and you might be able to think a lot clearer without your mom holding you back.
>>
>>2723394
Yeah, my mom has always been some sort of a downer and worrier. For almost everything that I do, she wants to know where I am, what I'm doing, etc. I've gotten to a point where I feel bad when I'm going out or travelling, even with my girlfriend.
And if I travel, I already dread that when I come back, she will bombard me with millions of questions; not forgetting the thousands of things she'll say when I announce that I'll be travelling alone.
>>

Yall should bring your mom's with you. I've seen a couple of real wimps in Japan with their mommies, about 30 years old , greasy, skinnyfat, slumped shoulders looking defeated. One of them, a bitter old hag from London, sent her son off to do some minor task and started belittling her son to me saying he was going to fail etc. That's your future if you don't get your shit sorted, join a BJJ gym or something

Anon you pathetic wimp, she is your damn mother, of course she is worrying about you.

Isn’t this in the sticky? Same way you do at home. Lowered inhibitions and spirits of adventure among hostel types can be a small advantage, but the basic processes of socializing and attempting to pick up women are pretty universal.

Honestly if you have no luck with women back home don't expect that to suddenly change while your traveling. I'm the same way, I used to dream of meeting someone randomly and suddenly falling for each other and having spontaneous sex but it just doesn't happen that way. If anything it will be worse than back home because every interaction will be short term and superficial so you're going to be heavily judged on appearance and first impressions. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Back in the day (pre 9/11) it was possible to purchase a vehicle in the usa as a foreign citizen (I've heard).
Is there any way to do this at this day and age, and how would insurance work without a home address in the states? Also, why do your rv's not have seatbelts for the passengers?

>Back in the day (pre 9/11) it was possible to purchase a vehicle in the usa as a foreign citizen (I've heard).
Is there any way to do this at this day and age, and how would insurance work without a home address in the states?

It is possible, but complicated, and typically quite expensive. Both insurers and vehicle registration authorities require a U.S. address (and cars generally can’t be registered without insurance anymore in any case, although state laws on insurance vary, and many US citizens drive uninsured even though it is not legal).

There are specialist auto and insurance dealers who facilitate this. Do some Googling of terms like “expat car insurance” and “expat car financing” and options will come up. But they’re mostly going to push leasing and it won’t be cheap. They’re also mostly targeting H1B visa holders, so not all of them will accommodate you if you don’t have a U.S. address. Some dealers also specialize in selling cars to foreigners who intend to export them home; this is still more expensive in most cases.

It’s also, perhaps obviously, possible to do it illegally, buying a used vehicle with cash directly from the previous owner, and then not bothering to change the registration, assuming previous owner leaves the old plates on. But it’s very stupid and if anything bad happens you’re going to get in several flavors of trouble..

>RV seatbelts
I believe they’re often in the same class of vehicle as buses, which don’t require seatbelts for passengers. There’s actually some safety logic behind this, I think; some crash test dummy mangler decades ago concluded they weren’t essential, although I don’t recall the details. And a lot of modern RVs do have passenger seatbelts, anyway.

Wanna take my nvme drive with me on a long flight, any suggestions on how to transport it?
Do I just sandwich it between some corrugated cardboard & call it a day?
Not sure how careful I should be and I don't have any small anti static bags (not sure if that's even necessary)
>>
>>2724741
I think anti-static bags are probably overkill; I would just get a small padded envelope and stick it in my carry-on. The drive should be fairly durable. But I don’t know how precious whatever data is on there is to you.
>>
>>2724745
Not much, I backed up the important stuff (obviously), it's just to use as an extra drive at my buddy's place I'm visiting, has games & movies and has some extra space to put more on

I just renewed my passport internationally and my existing passport still has a year on it, once I receive my new one can i still travel on my old one which has a years validity? or will they pull me up on it.

also carrying two is "illegal" right?
>>
>>2724855
I don’t know what country you’re from, so I can answer none of these questions.

I do know that when American passports get renewed, you have to submit the old one with your renewal application, and they send it back with holes punched into it so it can no longer be used; the old passport number also officially ceases to be valid when the new one is issued. I assume a new passport invalidates the old one in most countries.

But that said, it’s still possible and legal for an American to hold two US passports simultaneously if cleared by the passport authority—they do this rarely but not never for, for example, people who have to travel extremely frequently and are sometimes left waiting a long time for visas. But it involves special formal requests and there’s a whole procedure, and I think both passports have the same number, although I’m not sure.

Flights are so damn expensive the weekend before Christmas leading right up to Christmas. Has anyone come across cheap flights from Europe to South America or SEA, please drop some leads, please

I noticed flights started getting expensive after the first week of december
I couldn't book a flight a week later that connected to a better train because it was 300€ more
>>
I've never travelled internationally before. I'm from Australia and it's pretty expensive to get out of here.

I have about a month to travel, December 16 to January 20.

Does this seem like a decent itinerary?

Fly to Bangkok, spend 4 days to a week in Bangkok and surrounds. I'm a gymcel but I don't really think I've got the stomach for prostitution. Is it worth staying a whole week in Bangkok if I'm seeing it for the first time and mostly using it as a travel hub to get to India?

Fly to Delhi, do Golden Triangle, take trains from Agra through various smaller towns and cities, stopping a night or two at some on the way to Varanasi. Fly from Varanasi to Mumbai, spend a few days around there and toward Goa, Karnataka. About 3 weeks in India total. Does this seem too hectic for 3-3.5 weeks?

Fly from presumably Mumbai back to SEA - was thinking Saigon. Spend 4-7 days around Saigon. Is there enough to do there in a week without travelling long distances to other areas? Fly from Saigon back to Brisbane, Australia.

I haven't been to any of the spots you're mentioning, however I will give some generic advice.
Don't try to fit too much into your trip, ESPECIALLY since it's your first. You don't want it to be stressful and you also don't want to feel like you're doing too much to just take things in.

How exactly is the 90-day rule calculated?

Day 1 is the date your arrival stamp shows, or the day after?

Are you supposed to leave at latest on day 90, or 89, or 91?
>>
>>2724959
It depends on the country. For example, in Japan the arrival day does not count. In the Schenge area, it does. You need to leave on day 90.
>>
>>2724877
And I just looked it up—I guess Americans renewing passports online don’t have to return/destroy their old passports, but online renewal isn’t usually possible for passports renewed by Americans living abroad; I know that where I live, it can’t even be done by mail—I had to bring my documents (including old passport) to a consulate.

If an American citizen who gets a new passport without relinquishing the old one has a still-valid visa affixed to the still-valid old one, it’s then legal to use the old one while it’s still good, but you’re only supposed to/allowed to use the old one simultaneously with the new one. It’s no longer officially valid for use on its own. Whether or how this is enforced in practice I have no idea.

And the legal simultaneous duplicate passports I mentioned above do indeed bear the same number.

So if you’re a Yank, one of the circumstances described above probably applies to you. Something similar may also be true wherever you are from, wherever that is.
>>
>>2724959
Play it safe and leave on day 89.
>>
>>2724855
Depends on what country you are from. In my country for example you are officially allowed to have two passports at the same time.

Do a hike or 2 with some views of the city

War museum and National museum are both huge, free, worth going to.

Gyeongbokgung is considered the "main" tourist palace but there are 4 others. They are all similar in architecture, design, and lack of any exhibitions or anything to keep your interest beyond a cursory glance so don't waste your time going to them all (you can buy a ticket to go to them all, you can also enter the palaces for free if you play dress up in Hanbok). Gyeongbokgung has a changing of the guard ceremony a couple of times a day, worth timing it to see (one of the other palaces does too but it's smaller). Changdeokgung Secret Garden has a tour you can book to go around but its just a garden really not too interesting and the English tour group was a group of 100 and about half of that were browns speaking their brown languages to each other over the tour guide so I couldn't hear her most of the time anyway

The temples in Seoul are pretty meh but no harm in having a look around Jogyesa or Bongeunsa if you're in the area (both free)

If you are interested in seeing world heritage sites:
Seolleung and Jeongneung (one park together) are Joseon dynasty tombs located in Gangnam. Actually pretty cool to see imo
Jongmyo was the main shrine on the Joseon dynasty but when I went earlier this year the main building was under renovation
For reasons I never bothered to spend 10 seconds googling, Changdeokgung Palace is but the other palaces aren't

---

The average tourist to Korea is a mentally unstable brown overweight female kpop listener
Their containment zones (i.e. the most popular tourist hospots) are Myeongdong (walking street, night market, etc etc), Bukchon Hanok Village, Gyeongbokgung Palace, and COEX library, and any of the hundreds of "instagram cafes" all over this cursed country. They really don't have the braincells to venture far out of those areas. They probably go to Cheonggyecheon Stream and Gwanghwamun Square too

Not sure if this fits here but I'll post anyway. I'm a 26 year old American at a crossroads in my life and I'm wondering what I should do. I am either going to advance my work by going to grad school in the UK (would be much faster and cheaper for the program I'm looking at compared to the US) or I can fuck around for a while teaching English in Asia. My goal right now is to enjoy my youth and explore new cultures, which I feel like teaching abroad would be good for, but I also feel like it'd be irresponsible of me and I can still travel a bit if I went to the UK and it'd put me in a good spot financially when I'm done. Which one should I do /trv/?

I have no idea how or if it’s controlled, but according to the Australian embassy in the USA, your old passport becomes invalid when your new one is issued (as is standard in the US under normal circumstances), expired or not. They recommend not traveling once you have applied to renew (although it’s interesting that they just ‘recommend’ this, rather than ordering it). I would check the status of your application and move your trip as needed if the new pass has already been assigned to you, just in case, even if you don’t have it in hand yet. Maybe you could get away with it; I have no idea. But it sounds like you’re not supposed to.

Nobody here has accurate information to offer you. Most of the information you will find online on any and all related subjects is likewise made-up or highly speculative silliness. People seldom get away with this sort of thing for long.

You say you’re not a criminal. OK. But you probably will be as soon as you attempt to fake your own death. Curiously, that isn’t inherently illegal. But almost anything you do to get your demise officially acknowledged, and to assume a new identity afterwards, will be.

Living informally under an assumed identity is possible if you’re willing to live an extremely marginal existence—decent/legal/over-the-table jobs and housing are pretty much off limits with no ID, but cash-in-hand work and pay-as-you-go housing (or squatting?) sort of exist. Ask your nearest homeless person for advice. And as for assuming a new identity abroad, ask Nick Alahverdian. He pulled it off for a couple of years, and got a forged Irish driver’s license and an accomplice wife out of it. Maybe it’ll be even easier for you, since you’re not currently a fugitive.

>I never said I was going to fake my death
Sorry, I assumed that you intended to fake your own death when you mentioned wanting to be declared legally dead.

There are more realistic ways to change your life than trying to falsify your way into a new one. But they do typically require time and effort (and probably money). But so would the fraudulent approach.
>>
>>2726240
My research also says no. You’ve probably also seen that even countries that don’t require it of everyone (which as far as I can tell is just counties where it’s endemic) still require it from people coming from places where it’s endemic. This is almost certainly not the case with you, unless you’re also spending twelve hours or more in Burundi or the DRC that you forgot to mention.

The risk area is a fairly wide swath of Central Africa, but all your destinations are south of it.

>Is it worth putting up with the endless touts & scammers to see the pyramids?

It’s a fairly simple cost-benefit analysis. The pyramids are unique; the archaeological museums are even better (although arguably not quite unique, as a lot of great old Egyptian stuff is scattered around UK and European museums). The touts and grime and traffic and all of the other negatives associated with visiting Egypt aren’t fictional, but they can be navigated. If you’re excited enough by the ancient shit that can’t be seen anywhere else to find your way through the nasty aspects of modern Egypt that surround them, of course it’s worth it. But if you’ve never tried to deal with pushy and sometimes dishonest vendors, and you’re unprepared to gird your loins to endure the grit and substandard infrastructure of Cairo and beyond, just go to the British Museum.

I found it worth it; one of my sons is an archaeology maniac, and we have been to in-your-face destinations before.

I've booked a trip to central Switzerland and Austria for Feb next year but suddenly I'm having second thoughts. I feel like I'm going to be miserable the whole time. I feel like I'm only going to Europe because I 'need' to go there once in my life when really I'd rather just go to Japan again. Someone convince me not to cancel.
>>
>>2727435
>I feel like I'm only going to Europe because I 'need' to go there once in my life
There's nothing wrong with that. I believe every continent deserves at least one visit, even Africa and South America.

Best case scenario: You actually end up enjoying it and you're no longer apprehensive about visiting Europe.
Average case scenario: You think it's okay, but you gave it an earnest try, and you'll go back to Japan next time.
Worst case scenario: You don't like it, but at least you were able to confirm it instead of wondering "what if"

I used to be an Asia-only traveler myself, but my last three trips have been to Europe. I'm actually trying to go back to Asia for my next trip, but I don't know what I want anymore. I'm honestly thinking of meeting in the middle and going with Turkey or Georgia.
>>
>>2727435
That's extremely closed minded. East Asia is really interesting but there is an insane amount of experiences that are exclusive to Europe. But at the same time I'd say definitely don't go, if you have no interest, being ignorant is a human right. You'll spend a lot of time and a lot of money on your trip so definitely don't go if it's not for you, ilife isn't a competition, leave all of the boxes that don't apply to you.

Can I ask which countries you've been to so far?
