not really. malaysia is very poor in this area.
the national museum (muzium negara) is ok for an hour, i guess. but it is academically very poor (for example many exhibits not even dated properly) and it retcons malaysia's history in favour of the muslims (many pre-islamic artefacts and sites have been destroyed in malaysia)
there is an islamic art gallery but you have to be really really into squiggles and dots to enjoy it. personally i didn't
one place that might be more interesting than it sounds is the textile museum. i have never been there but malaysia (and this region) have a long history of textile design (e.g. batik, songket) so if you are into design/fashion etc it might be of interest
there are one or two quirky museums and galleries but probably not worth making a long trip for
as for architecture, there are a few places that have old colonial houses and so on e.g. penang, melaka or kl's old railway station, but most of malaysia is modern builds so unless you're really into tower blocks it's not architecturally interesting. i guess some of the skyscrapers do have a certain appeal e.g. petronas towers

Muzium Negara is nice for a little bit and has some cool things but yeah seems obsessed with Islamic stuff and completely ignores everything else, Malaysia was a Buddhist empire before the towelheads turned up and you won't see anything from that era.
Modern architecture: Merdeka 118 is pretty
cool, Singapore blows KL out of the water in this department though.

What's ironic is that Malaysian ISPs block 4chan as a pornographic website, so nobody who travels in Malaysia can post here unless they bypass the ban, and if they are that much of a hardcore 4channer, they wouldn't be in Malaysia in the first place.

Okay, so what's the language situation over in Malaysia?

>just speak English, bro
Will do. I assume the Malays and jeets have some working knowledge of English.

My real question is, will I piss off the Chinese if I try to speak Malay to them? I just think it'll be hilarious.
>>
>>2709285
Good thing I have a VPN, a pass, and don't consider myself a hardcore 4channer.
>>
>>2709285
>What's ironic is that Malaysian ISPs block 4chan as a pornographic website,
i guess there might be some ISPs that do this as they all have their own rules about what sites are allowed or banned. on my home ISP 4chan is allowed but porn websites are blocked. i don't know if there is a way to unblock them. i am in my office at the moment and nothing is blocked as far as i can tell (or be bothered to try). certainly pornhub, xhamster, xvideos are all available.
as i understand it watching porn online is legal in malaysia but downloading it- even from sites that allow you to do so- is not legal. not 100% sure though
>so nobody who travels in Malaysia can post here unless they bypass the ban, and if they are that much of a hardcore 4channer, they wouldn't be in Malaysia in the first place.
yeah i am more of a softcore 4channer
>>2709323
>Okay, so what's the language situation over in Malaysia?
practically everyone speaks english in some form or other
in the past couple of years there has been a push to encourage more widespread BM (bahasa malaya i.e. malay) usage. the government decreed that all official documents etc should be written in malay. some people have rejected this e.g. sarawak uses english much more widely.
in practice in everday conversation malaysians speak a weird mish-mash of malay, english, chinese and who knows what else. sometimes in the same sentence. example, "have you eaten already?" commonly becomes "you makan already lah?" (adding "lah" at the end of a sentence is a general purpose exclamation/question mark)
language is used as a proxy racism. for example it is common to see job adverts that say "must speak mandarin"- most malays don't, so this is basically a way of saying "chinese only".
>>
>>2709323
Everyone local speaks English to a reasonable degree except for maybe all the Bangladeshi migrant construction workers and Nepalese security guards.
It's actually very annoying if you are trying to learn Bahasa Malayu because you speak in BM to someone and they just respond in English because you are a foreigner, annoyed the fuck out me trying to learn, you maybe can find some old Malay auntie in a store who will give you 2 mins of conversation out of sheer novelty for her.

They tried to block it this week but rural Malays are porn-addicted coomers so the government did a backflip after a few days to not get overthrown at the next election.

>>2709924
Yeah, they do that too, but they'll still fuck white guys and use you as a fashion accessory to impress their friends.
My experience as an anglo guy who has worked in Malaysia on and off for a few years:
>Chinese Malaysian
Cute, always better looking and age well, generally can be very superficial women though, if you can put up with mindless bimbos then you will be fine here.
>Indian Malaysian
Usually will be the most compatible with westerners, smart and funny, there seems to be no average looking ones in Malaysia, it's either super hot with 100 jeet orbiters or completely ugly/fat, there's no inbetween and it's weird.
>Malay Malaysian
Wholesome and straight up wife material, Malay guys have no idea how good they have it. They usually aren't as good looking as Chinese Malaysian women but make up for it by just being themselves. If it weren't for the whole religious conversion to Islam thing I would marry half the Malay women I know tomorrow. They are lovely but I'm not giving up beer and bacon.

8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 work better, less cloudflare prompts.

Anyone been in Malaysa for about a month here is my take on it:
-Food is cheap, but where isn't it in SEA probably still cheaper but the portions are smaller than I recall in other countries. The very cheap food has virtually no quality control to animals or insects
-Quality of Life is lower than places I've been unless you stick to where the Chinese have renovated city blocks for apartments and malls. Air quality can be downright horrible pick up some throat pills at KK
-Nightlife is subpar unless you go to very specific places often a city block or so that Koreans/Thai/Chinese specifically to host bars and parties. Pubs and American bars are laughably sad, native Malay ones are lol no.
-The attractions and landmarks would be cool if Xi wasn't bringing is entire extended family of 16 people to every fucking place meaning it's a constant fight to get around selfie sticks and old chinese people who don't know what arrows mean
-Raw sewage, chemicals, trash being dumped into rivers means you really can't enjoy them without a coof mask, beaches are cherry picked where you basically are just booking a resort but with Chinese flung on
-If you're good with haggling you can sometimes find some pretty good deals on things
-Events are okay though why so many are just randomly thrown together in a mall is weird concert scene is lackluster for the most part clubs are filled with scam artists

On the bright side if you are doing something like long term travel or digital nomad, it's stupid cheap with solid 5G internet. Probably the best place to come if you need to refresh your wardrobe outside Vietnam too. You can easily get away with english virtually anywhere and dating isn't that impossible though as a tourist you're chatting up Chinese 9 out of 10 times

Not sure if I would return unless I was seriously low on funds and was just looking to do some 90 day saving routine but didn't want to do Korea/Taiwan.
>>
>>2710094

This was a real budget place, mom cooking and her eight year old kid waiting tables. No English or Malay written or spoken. Food was pretty damn tasty and cheap even by Malaysian standards.
I liked Temerloh; it had a great city park and a chill riverfront park as well. Tons of eateries around my hotel. It's a well-kept little town in general. The bus ride from Temerloh to KL was very scenic. Bentong has more nature appeal, being right up against the mountains, but the hotel prices are higher there.

unironically why is the internet like this?
>>
>>2712489
for clicks and likes. malaysians love nothing more than hearing foreigners tell them how great malaysia is. presumably that's a still from a video, and i guarantee that at least 80% of the views on the video are from malaysians themselves. more like 90% if he talks about how great malaysian food is.
malaysians especially love it when british people do this because of the weird relationship they have with their former colonial masters. there are a couple of minor celebrities in malaysia who are british people who converted to islam and married locals and became slightly famous despite having no personality or talent whatsoever
>>
>>2712572
People are braindead morons, SEA only has 3 countries ya know? Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam; and a city called Bali for the aussies.
Outside the main cities it's all mud huts and fishing villages because they saw some National Geography from the 90's

>>2712572
Also this, Malaysians basically become your lapdogs and cream their pants if you praise their country for being so advanced, even if half the stuff is all facades. Most people dance around the topics like the insanely huge homeless problem they face, the infrastructure basically falling apart every other city block, the horrible diparity in rich/poor, the vanity projects that basically mean jack shit to the citizens but updoot nationalism.

The mix of cultures in food Malaysia has is basically the one thing they have going for them outside being cheap to visit. If you want to spot a malay fast just wait for them to doubledown on some stupid food pics

What muslim establishment do you intend to go drink alcohol at anon? It clearly says beer house at the top.

Not many people here are absolute brokefags trying to begpack/poorfag it across SEA. The ones who want to are basically never going to because after looking at flght costs and realizing it takes effort they just go back to day dreaming. I would say 4 out of 5 people here probably have a weekly budget that of over 150 USD or 20 USD a day while traveling. That goes a long way in Malaysia so why would you subject yourself to 'wow 7 rm sandwhich! look at the outside. Don't question the meat content or amount!' when like most other tourists I ran into would get hungry just a bit later. This is especially true if you are actively going to historical sites, weekend events, or other

While there is good food to be had for cheap, and I don't think anyone should overpay, why not just get something well made in an establishment that doesn't make you question if a bird is going to swoop down on your meal when you look away? I mean if you are on a shoe string budget in any major Malaysian city you should be saving your money for these to combat the absolute horrid air quality.

bullshit on both counts. the patties are made of proper ground beef with minimal fillers, cooks up kinda dry and chewy with the grease running out of the patty into the bun, and they were your standard 70 g or similar weight.
>fancy western bar prices
You can find bars serving Tiger or Carlsbad for RM 15 on the riverfront in Melaka. One bar even had an RM 7 Carlsbad special while I was there, 4-7 PM every day. you are the anon with the phobia of pigeons lurking in restaurant rafters? I've seen plenty of sparrows fucking around in restaurants, hopping on tables, flitting onto food prep counters like the little flying mice they are, but rarely pigeons. In fact, you hardly even see a single pigeon in a city like Malacca, they've been completely driven out by the gangs of raucous crows whose cawing continually echoes through the quieter blocks. Klang Valley is famous for its crow gangs as well.
>over 150 USD
Unless you want to stay in a windowless poverty-tier bugbox, you do need to spend more than that per week. My last four weeks in southern Malaysia averaged RM 870/week or $180. Kuala Lumpur averaged RM 1065 or $225. Food expenses per week were RM 345, 303, 452 (durian binge), 253, 270, 219, 289.

If he went back to America to live in his $1500 shoebox he'd change his tone right fucking quick

I just think it's stupid as fuck to be out doing serious strenuous exercise while the AQI is smashing over 150. Literally all sane advice is stay inside and not exercise.
It fucking sucks too after a few days, you end up staying inside a lot, I don't mind because I have two hepa air filters which is comfy to come home to, but with a heatwave and burning season together it's definitely not pleasant doing anything outdoors.
>>
>>2714209
Not my first rodeo in SEA space cowboy, anyone who's spent long enough in the area knows the joke.
They set them up near the AQI monitoring stations, it's hilarious and very Thai.

Holy fuck are these assholes serious? Air filter trucks? Lmfao

Ah yes what a great travel expirence, to go to another countries main hubs and get told to stay inside... Truly refined travel tastes my friend I hope you have a gaming laptop as well.

Going out is just going to end up costing money you could save and invest anyways.

Even if you go on 150 wk, that's 600 a month.

I did a basic airbnb search and found this for under 300 with many others being cheaper but this looked nicest. Given how overly vocal these threads are with how cheap Malaysia is like 5 dollars for a big high-quality meal that's filling, you're looking at 150/mo for food. That will still leave you with 150+change for whatever you want.

This thread is funny but for all the wrong reasons. I can't tell if there is an actual malaysian here, some anon's first time traveling, or a seriously brain broke anon attempting to troll trolls.

Hell, if you wanted to be actually real about it, you could get something like this that seems fine. This doesn't even look begpacker levels.

Malaysia looks fine for anyone on a budget but horrible for anyone who's extroverted.

>Ah yes what a great travel expirence, to go to another countries main hubs and get told to stay inside
???
this is what the locals do
in some years the haze is so bad that you literally can't see the other side of the road
so you go from your air conditioned home to your air conditioned car to your air conditioned office/mall/whatever
i guess some people might find emphysema attractive but most people try to avoid it
the only people that walk around when that happens are poor migrant workers. banglas and flips etc

Great, this board isn't >>>/int/ this board is /tv/. Most no one here is a local and I am pretty sure no one here wants to be a Malaysian citizen. We have options of countries to visit, limited visa time, and have to weigh it accordingly.

I don't have this issue in most all Europe, North America, and Northern Asian countries. The last thing I care to deal with while trying to go hike a trail or walk between main attractions or spend 6+ hours outside is for some weather alert to be like "wtf stay inside hazard to health" or "No sirs do not swim in these beaches! very bad" or the classic "DO NOT DRINK TAP WATER" signs all over my airbnb.

When you have options to go anywhere you see how far down Malaysia is on the list of reasons to go

Yep, they are called Southeast Asia haze events, noteworthy enough for each to have its own Wikipedia article.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_Southeast_Asian_haze
The thick haze is caused by Indonesians slash-and-burning vast areas of their rainforest in order to turn it into palm plantations. Until Indonesia's government gets their shit together and enforces the existing laws which ban setting fires to vast areas of land, Indonesian haze will continue to plague all of Southeast Asia.
When I visited Malaysia last winter, the haze came and went, but AQI never really got above 100.
>>2714479
North America has its wildfire haze events too, particularly the western states and provinces.
>>2714424
Why do you consider Malaysia horrible for extroverts? It's quite a friendly country toward white foreigners, and there is a lot of socializing in public spaces after the sun goes down. Even as an anti-social weirdo who felt like shit most of the time, I had a lot of positive interactions with locals in Malaysia.
Side note, if you find yourself constantly fatigued and feeling like shit in SEA, try a multivitamin. Chances you are your diet is leaving you nutritionally deficient.

The MYR has strengthened from 4.71 to the dollar to 4.09 in the past three months. This means prices have suddenly surged over 20% for US travelers. Malaysia's value for cost isn't looking all that great anymore...

Just got back from Malaysia on Friday. I spent four days in KL, and did a day trip to Malacca with a guide. My opinions:

>KL really isn't a walking city. The traffic is crazy, and the city centre is bisected with multiple four-lane highways. The public transport is pretty good, and the monorail took me to most of the places I needed to go. The air was as clean as an Australian city this time of year.

>Contrary to what I was told in the thread, Malaysia has some great museums. I could easily have spent a whole day in the Islamic Arts Museum, and Malacca has some amazing sites from the 18th century. There are a lot of niche museums that I didn't end up visiting, like the bank museum and the textiles museum.

>Genting is a tourist trap designed to separate Chinks from their money in the fastest time possible. It's worth visiting for the views from the cable car, but I was otherwise bored out of my mind waiting for my bus back to Sentral. I wanted to see the mountain top, but there's no quick way out of the casino and shopping centre complex.

>The food is pretty good, but it's hard to find anything with actual nutritional content. I didn't get sick once. The tap water is fine if you're staying in a relatively new building. I brushed my teeth with tap water and used it to make tea.

>The Kinokuniya Book store in the Suria Mall under the Petronas Towers is one of the best bookstores I've ever visited. Very good if you like foreign languages and Asian history.

>There are private security guards and cops absolutely everywhere, but I didn't see any crime.

>Even though I spent most of my time hanging around tourist attractions, I saw relatively few White people. Chinese tourists massively outnumbered them.

I easily could have spent another few days there.

>North America has its wildfire haze events too, particularly the western states and provinces.
Lmao that's nothing compared to the smog and sewage filled air that is daily in KL, or other main cities in Malayasia.
>>
>>2718081
Were the Chinese tourists the typical bug herds being guided by one person waving a flag, or were they independent/self-guided, since there's no language barrier?
>>
>>2718179
There are a lot of native chinese and recently relocated chinese living in Malaysia so you get all kinds.

You get the mainlanders looking to escape because Chang is their 9th distant cousin and runs a small business selling aliexpress items there.
You get business men bringing their families over to visit
You get bus tourist groups treating KL like a playground.

There are lots of chinese villages in Malaysia often with their own school district and system.

More like shitty windowless bugboxes now going for $17/night across Malaysia, that adds up to $500/month for a long-term traveler. In America I enjoy a sweet one-bedroom apartment with kitchenette, living room and guest area for $500/month. The nutritious and appetizing meals I prepare here cost $8/day, less than I spend on food in Southeast Asia. The only pluses to Malaysia are the hugely greater variety of meals and treats on offer, and the liberty to experience life in many different places. Otherwise I'll be paying more for an less desirable life by leaving America.

They keep finding Chinese people who have been living illegally for decades in Singapore, it wouldn't surprise me how many are doing it in Malaysia
>>
>>2718179

Depends on the location. At museums it was mostly Chinese tour groups with the flag on a selfie-stick guides leading them around. There is a language barrier for them, as museums and other tourists sites only have Malay and English signs. At places like Genting that are deliberately designed to attract Chinese tourists I didn't see any tourist groups, only families and individuals.

The key word being "traveler". Staying put for one month or more is not traveling, it's settling down, and I've always found staying put in one place to become very dull after a few days. Nonetheless...
An alternative that some Malaysians recommended is renting a cheap monthly room and then taking an overnight trip every few days. If I pay $250/month for an apartment and average $17/night for a hotel room, that allows me 13 overnight trips per month for the same price as 30 nights in hotels (subtracting $40 in additional bus/train fare for the return trips). Additionally, I can travel light, with little more than my laptop, toothbrush and a single change of clothes. Easier to feel adventurous that way.
On second thought, this arrangement sounds a helluva lot better than wearily lugging my big-ass duffel bag from hotel to hotel for months at a time. Gotta give it a try this winter for sure.
