It seems like a total waste of time learning foreign languages when you only stay in a country for 3 months. I tried talking in Spanish when in Spain and the people understood nothing and vice versa.

Assuming you know English can't you go anywhere and get by? Or just use Google translate? I also feel like I'm doing the locals a favor by speaking in English since it would improve their job prospects. I used to learn how to say thank you etc but now I don't even do that anymore

Listen, there's something called respect. I'm sick and tired of '''westerners''' (which is a bullshit term, as they live in the east, on the map), thinking they own the world.
Colonisation is over, and your shit language is dying with it.

Learn a few fucking phrases and humble yourself, jerk. If you can't do that, you're a 60IQ retard with 0 brain processor capacity.

I've been in Japan for 5 months and only know one word and everyone treats me great. They jibber jabber at me occasionally and I just loudly say hello or good morning and they properly switch to English, everyone is happy but people like you who wasted their time and money learning 14 Japanese words. Don't you feel silly?

>signs are in English
>announcements are in English
>store clerk knows the word for bag
>use an app to order McDonald's

Lmao it's so easy it's actually low iq to learn a foreign language you just annoy the locals who have to say huh huh huh

The irony of this statement is that white culture these days mostly revolves around being a self-hating cuck, whipping yourself for the crimes of racism and colonialism, stroking the ego by pretending one is Jane Goodall with a white savior complex and pet browns.
>>
>>2721678
i think it's worth learning some very basic phrases to get by, just to make common interactions easier. numbers. hello. thank you. yes/no/maybe. that sort of thing.

Otherwise I agree. It's not worth the effort to learn a foreign language when you'll never be fully fluent and 99% of the earth wants to learn English anyway.
>>
>>2721678
>It seems like a total waste of time learning foreign languages when you only stay in a country for 3 months. I tried talking in Spanish when in Spain and the people understood nothing and vice versa.

Well, it certainly sounds like your attempts to learn Spanish were a waste of your time, given that you admit to being unable to speak or understand Spanish.

Personally, I like learning languages, and I have been successful with a few of them. But if you get nothing out of it, you’re not wrong that it is possible to get by in English nearly everywhere.
>>
>>2721688
>your shit language is dying with it
and yet here you are, speaking English, because anyone worth talking to speaks English. Not urdu, farsi, or whatever other turdie language your native tongue is
>>
if you cant get to basic levels within 3 months via intense study you must be retarded. like real learning disability shit. actually judging by how you write in your first language i think i'm probably correct. 4th grade level. Sad!
>>
>>2721911
So basically you waste 3 months learning something completely useless. Sounds low iq
>>
>>2721939
i dont think you know what "useless" means
>>
I speak two languages when I travel:
1. English
2. English, but louder and slower
>>
>>2721865
>because anyone worth talking to speaks English.
I would adjust that statement.

Very few people in this world are actually worth talking to. For me it's not a language issue, but more so a personal quality issue. There are way too many low-quality people who can speak English, and there is no shortage of evidence on the internet. We have over 8 billion people on this planet, and if I could have it my way, I would only speak to no more than 10 of them.
>>
It's not for everyone.
>>
Before travelling I'll play some video games I'm really familiar with in their language

I've been playing Skyrim in Japanese lately and I think it's helping me get some listening comprehension

You are correct. Yes it unlocks way way more experiences but the time investment is not worth it compared to developing a good local friend or two if you're staying less than a year, or not going to do frequent travel to target lang countries over long term
>>
>>2721688
lmao. cope

Spanish is a European colonizer language too, dumbass.
>>2721700
As if a pudgy goyslop-munching weeb's opinion is worth anything. You pretend as if the world beyond your little English-speaking bubble doesn't exist, when in fact it does, and it is far larger and more interesting than you could ever dream of.
>>2721939
Only dull-brained zombies don't feel any need to engage in intellectual stimulation such as language learning or cultural study while living at leisure.
>>2722089
Minimizing frivolous chatter when living the travel life is based. It's always the midwit normies who can't communicate the simplest ideas without blabbering entire paragraphs of English. At least their denseness keeps them where they belong, in the English-friendly tourist containment zones.
>>
>>2721939
That's literally backward. Being able to learn and understand multiple languages is linked to a higher IQ. It's also excelent to develop brain functions and keep them while aging. Language is to the mind what sport is to the body.

You just outed yourself as a lowIQ retard by showing you're too lazy and dumb to learn a second language. I bet you're poor too. Shoot yourself in the balls
>>
>>2721678
It's not a meme, but don't overdo it. Showing that you put in the effort to learn some common polite phrases demonstrates respect beyond typical scum and gets you better treatment from many people.
>>
>>2725072
>Being able to learn and understand multiple languages is linked to a higher IQ.

Wrong. That's a midwit take even retards can learn to speak multiple languages but they aren't dumb enough to waste their time on something useless
>>
>>2725279
Useless? yeah, right. Keeping brain functions while aging through out your life is not important at all, I guess, If you plan to kill yourself (which you should, you dirty fucking ape). Go ahead, stay retarded
>>

All you need for worldwide travel/business is:
Mandarin
Russian
English
The Arab world speaks English quite well because they have to for trade/oil/gas. Poos understand English well. SEA is best for both Mandarin and English. Europe is divided between English and Russian. Now we come to spictopia.....most are desperate to learn English to get out of those jungle shitholes
>but anon spanish has more speakers than English. Yeah they are isolated in a remote part of the world.
>>
>>2725072
>Being able to learn and understand multiple languages is linked to a higher IQ

in the us, bilingual individuals clock with lower IQs in comparison with the general population.
>>
>>2725641
FACT CHECK: true

IQ of bilingual people in the United States is probably around 80
>>
>>2721688
>he wrote this in perfect english
>>
>>2725641
Browns dont count. But maybe I should have precised that. I assumed amongst white people, the ones who speak multiple languages are the ones with higher IQs. But you're right, if your country is flooded with foreigner technically speaking the amount of bilingual increases and the iq lowers. I grant you that
>>
>>2725871
It's an American thing, they are so used to living in a giant insulated country that their mind refuses to adapt to a different reality where speaking multiple languages is the norm. Some people would rather not speak a foreign language at all than speak it poorly and sound like a retard.
>>
>>2725920
>everyone speaks your language
>use your time to get richer rather than learn a useless language

Yep,it's an American thing

This summer I illegally crossed the border from Tajikistan into Afghanistan, met a bunch of locals in a remote mountain village, had fun and got away with it because I had picked up a bunch of words in Wakhi/Dari/Kyrgyz during previous trips. Didn't require any studying. I've been in many areas where English wasn't spoken and internet/google translate didn't work - and while the quality of the latter has improved significantly over the last years, there's still language pairs where it'll mess up to the point of it barely being usable. I'm honestly happy I speak or at least somewhat understand so many languages as it has made life significantly easier both at home and abroad. Can honestly recommend.

Also, I don't mean to be demeaning but how does one learn a language for three months without being able to hold a basic conversation? I currently have a side gig teaching some exchange students the local language, and they have an okay handle on the basics it after a month.
>>
>>2721678
Depends on the country. Once you get outside of Europe and the Anglosphere, most people really appreciate foreigners who make an effort to learn the basics of their language/culture/religion. Even if you’re only talking to customer-facing staff and not actually trying to make any friends, at the very least you’re more likely to get discounts and have people bend rules for you.

Especially if you travel with a group or stick to tourist hotspots, you can absolutely get by with just English pretty much anywhere, but you will miss out on a lot of experiences, and a few people might even see you as “fair game” for scams.
>>
>>2721688
>"Westerners" only speak one language

Even within the west there are places where people are annoyed when Anglophone tourists can only communicate in English
I had to pull up google translate in Italy and Spain many times for instance and I know my own country (France) has a reputation for being hostile to people who don't even bother learning a couple words for their trip (for cultural reasons but also because many of us quite simply can't speak English for shit)

Even in France despite our reputation we don't expect people to learn our language for a simple vacation, what we don't like is people assuming from the get go we are able to understand English and it doesn't require 3 months to learn the local equivalent to "hello/thank you/goodbye/do you speak English"
>>
>>2727247
I'm in Brazil from Norway speaking a little bit of Portuguese and nobody here is impressed, they just seem slightly annoyed at me stuttering and not understanding
>>
>>2727289
I got the same reaction in Colombia. I didn't have a grasp of verb conjugation, so anything that wasn't in a simple tense would trip me up. One Jewish Colombian kid, the son of the hostel owner, even ranted to me about how annoyed he got at foreigners visiting Colombia and not speaking Spanish fluently. It's simple xenophobia in my view.
>>
>>2727254
Fuck off Pierre, not learning your useless language or going to any rude French speaking shithole. If I was dumb enough to go to Paris I would learn arabic

This is true. Foreign language education is largely a jobs program for otherwise-unemployable teachers. There's no use learning some hideous obsolete burrito-speak when you can obviously get by without it.
