I'm gonna be working in the UK from January to June for my Job. It'll be in either London or Bristol, I'm not sure if I'd switch between spots. What should I hit up while I'm there? Anything big to attend during those months? I've been to the UK like 3 times before. I've already seen
>London
>Oxford
>Windsor Castle
>Warwick Castle
>Stonehenge
>Bath
>Canterbury
>Dover for like 10 minutes
>Leeds Castle
>Glasgow
>Edinburgh
>Lock Ness

if you salary is high enough, choose London

critique on London is way overblown here
it's a really livable city (with the right salary)
QoL is really good and you will never run out of thing to do - at least I did not during my 1year research exchange
>>
>>2723206
>if you salary is high enough, choose London
I don't get a choice, it's looking like it'll be $150k. I definitely want London but wouldn't hate Bristol either. They say our housing will be provided and either hotel rooms or a shared Airbnb. I enjoyed London when I've gone
>>
The only thing I have planned is going to Toby's Carvery
>>
>>2723203
Do the theme parks when they open in Spring. Alton Towers for generally all around best, Chessington as a family park, Thorpe Park for white knuckle park. Legoland gets insanely busy. Blackpool Pleasure beach is also a great park but it's a nightmare to get to from London or Bristol.

Royal histoic Dockyards in Portsmouth has a load of historical ships. HMS Victory (may be in scaffolding as it's being restored but you can still tour it and it may be done by you visit) and the Mary Rose exhibition are the highlights.

Do a working museum like Beamish or the Black Country museum.

Do a west end theatre show (or many).

Do a tacky seaside resort like Blackpool, Skegness or Southend. You'll either enjoy it or feel unclean and hate every second. Brighton is a slightly less tacky seaside place.
>>
>>2723243
>Skegness
the destination of many of my childhood school holiday days out
whoever came up with the motto "it's so bracing" to describe the arctic icy blasts coming in from the north sea is a marketing evil genius

Seconded

Bristol is pretty good but it's quite small. I really don't like London at all desu, it's just another globohomo city, minority British and the people are cold and rude. There's more to do in London than in Bristol obviously, it's also way more expensive. It's about a 3 hours drive between London and Bristol so it's not exactly a huge distance anyways.
>>
>>2723203
Is that an std?

No she's just brit*sh
>>

>Anything big to attend during those months?
january-march will be a bit grim but as spring arrives things start opening up for the season
as you seem to like historical stuff look at the national trust and english heritage websites and pick places that are interesting to you
bristol kind of punches above its weight culture wise. it's a big student city so it has a big live entertainment scene- music, comedy, theatre and so on (music of all kinds- drum and bass and triphop were basically invented there, also it has quite a big punk and metal scene).
london is london, there's more stuff going on than you would ever have time to do
just look at a what's on guide and find stuff that you're into, start with something like the time out website

south west native here (Bristol is for gays and blacks, but anyway)

go up to north Wales, climb Snowdon and see some castles (Conwy would be the default one/ probably best)

Portsmouth - HMS victory is all covered up for repair for the next x years but you can still go in. bonus to visit when the carriers are in

if you're doing a tacky seaside resort, you can go to Barry in wales for maximum memes (or Weston super mare on the English side of the channel)

if you go Stonehenge then also go Salisbury to admire its 123m spire, it's really close. Also there is a free public path right alongside the whole northern edge of Stonehenge if you don't want to pay the extortion fee to look at some rocks. Just park along the road in the town a mile north of Stonehenge and walk the 15mins down to it)

Definitely go around the Cotswolds a lot

Warwick (castle) is next to Stratford-upon-Avon (where Shakespeare was from, its still a pretty nice town today)

I always wanted to go down to Cornwall for a bit, see the fishing towns, Eden project, go to lands end, but I never got around to it

you can go to Lyme Regis and the fossil coast (unesco) where you can just pick fossils off the beach to keep since the cliffs are eroding every day

new forest

Cheddar Gorge maybe, never been but may be an alright day trip

the average london salary is like £40k and if your housing is provided you'll be equivalent to a millionaire there (altho all the foreigns living in london have taxpayer funded housing provided for them too)
>>
>>2723647
>the average london salary is like £40k and if your housing is provided you'll be equivalent to a millionaire there
"average" salary is always a bit meaningless in a massive place like london because there is a huge underclass of unskilled workers who are basically slave labour
for someone working in central london £114k (~$150k) is basically a middle class salary that an average IT contractor could easily get (i know this because i'm an IT contractor and i aim for about £100k per year, although not working in london)
true, if anon doesn't have any overheads like rent or transport that will go a lot further but let's not get too over the top eh

south west cont.
Longleat is a popular stately home with a drive through safari park very close to Bristol that's worth a day out

Cheltenham Festival in March is one of the major horse racing events of the year in the UK. National hunt racing (the horses jump over shit), always a strong Irish presence as it lines up with St Patrick's day

i dont even wanna say glastonbury because it needs a fucking nuke dropped on it

>>2723654
ok well your slave underclass is the reality for most people in the uk outside of london
there is so much free shit like museums right on your door step in London, you got an extensive public transport network with a daily price cap of fucking pennies compared to what anyone else in the country has to pay for a single train ticket, and you can still go Tesco or Sainsburys to get the same £3.50 meal deal and pints as the rest of us
>>
bristol i dont remember so much specific sightseeing stuff apart from around the suspension bridge was comfy. the city seems nice lots of young art hoes, good selection of food, a decent city park. but london has more of all that i guess - if you're coming from usa and used to city living then crime isn't a big deal, if not then just know when to never relax
>>
>>2723647
>Cheddar Gorge maybe, never been but may be an alright day trip
ive been, its comfy walk with some climbs that aren't too treacherous if its not muddy. if its muddy, the worn path creates a U shape so when u step in the mud your foot slides sideways towards the gorge. kitsch tourist village in the gorge.

i dont know anything about glastonbury if the people outside of the festival are insufferable or not. there are landmarks that linked to arthurian legend - glastonbury tor, cadbury castle (there's nothing there), chalice well. if i was in the neighborhood i'd check it out but there must be 1000s of more impressive looking things in the uk. just scour the map of wherever u visit there will be neat stuff to pop over on a day off/road trip, but not worth travelling much of the day to only see this

> north Wales, climb Snowdon and see some castles (Conwy would be the default
this region there is a cluster of 4 castles, conwy, caenarfon, beaumaris, harlech.
caenarfon i think is where prince of wales is crowned? in the 70s charles had a ceremony there.
beaumaris is on anglesey island. menai strait suspension bridge is pretty cool

Not OP, where to go in UK for easy women like this?
>>
Are there parts of the UK where you can get a $50 hotel that's not a shithole
>>
>>2723771
For that you've got to get lucky and find a Premier Inn that's selling off rooms. Either that or a bed and breakfast for a seaside resort in the off-season. May be able to stay at a chavvy caravan park.

Can also probably find Britannia hotels around that price. You don't want to stay at a Britannia hotel.
>>
>>2723777
$90 for a shithole. I'm actually shocked it's rare to see hotels rated that low

>May be able to stay at a chavvy caravan park

What does that mean, sleeping in an RV recreational vehicle?
>>
>>2723793
You won't find a city centre hotel cheap.

Caravan parks are resorts that have caravans instead of rooms. Have nightclubs, pools, arcades. They're generally the cheapest holiday camps around, next to one's where you pitch your own tent
>>
>>2723793
Whatever you do, do NOT stay at Sachas or Britannia. Also prices are crazy high on Friday or Saturday nights in Manchester because everyone and their mum goes to party there.
>>
>>2723793
OP here, I stayed at hostel when I've been before and enjoyed it for an extended weekend. Had sex when I went to Edinburgh
>>
>>2723771
all hotel prices are extortionate in uk
is it migrant hotels boosting the price? i duno

easyhotel brand like easy jet is bare bones basic, but the exhaust fan seemed to be bringing in cigarette smoke. i was in a scummy town so there were lots of scummy people around, not sure if it was just them smoking in their room or under a window.
Anyway, they advertise a few cities for less than 35gbp on special days on their home site
>>
>>2723882
Thanks for that info, never hear of them before looks like they are in a bunch of countries
>>
>>2723882
>i duno
sir what the fuck do you think happens when you reduce supply by the government artificially making the demand for hotels the entire rest of the fucking world for free courtesy of the taxpayer?
>>
>>2723894
they have some rooms without windows, rooms with windows are just like half a foot wide but might be high ceiling. even the "bedside table" is only room for a water bottle and a cellphone . there is no chair in room. but if im chilling in room i just use laptop in bed.
private bathroom and shower in the 2 ive used. not every cheap hotel in uk do u get your own toilet and shower tho that is more of a relic outside of hostels
>>
>>2723793
I stayed at a Britannia in Stoke many years ago. I still think about how shit it was to this day. A spring popped out of the mattress and made my leg bleed
>>
>>2723771
Norwich I was literally looking at hotels there for £44-50 a night yesterday and I personally think it's a loxadt8vely city.
>>
>>2723771
$50 = about £38.50
you are unlikely to find rooms in mainstream hotels for that price unless you go for the real barebones places
but for that amount you can sometimes find single rooms in pubs that are perfectly reasonable and comfortable especially in less touristy places
some of them will be a bit out of the way so it helps if you have a car or nearby public transport
just don't expect any mod cons like air conditioning or anything. not that you will need it at this time of year
>>
Conwy
>>
>>2724169
>find single rooms in pubs

How do you find these are they advertised on booking.com etc?
>>
>>2724120
spent some time in norwich, felt pretty comfy overall
like everywhere in the uk the highstreet is turning dumpy, but the fancy bits near the old church, park, suburbs, old houses near the arts school were all comfy
>>
>>2724207
i dont know about independently owned ones, i'd assume many are on booking

on booking ive certainly gotten hotel pubs run by wetherspoons and greene king, seperate building on same property. these were in smaller commuter towns that were outside a rich city, so its just the local townies drinking there, not uni students or anything. my one example i dont think met the price threshold but it was maybe the best hotel option within the town and not on a motorway
>>
>>2723675
Agreed on Cheddar, it's comfy. But I've been to Glastonbury and I wouldn't recommended it. It's full of weird fucking hippies and the book shops there have actual satanic manuals on display. Weird vibe. The walk up to the Tor and the view from up there are nice, but that's it.

>>2724413
>Is the isle of mann worth visiting?
it's got some interesting historical stuff- some ancient stuff, a castle, some victorian stuff. and of course it is famous for the motorbike races. so yeah, if you're into any of that stuff. but don't expect to be able to fill up too much time there, it's a tiny island after all

>>
How is Newcastle? I might consider moving there from Canada when I can. Never been to the north, so no idea what it's like.
>>
>>2724513
It's about as Scottish as you can be without being Scottish.

Positives:

The city itself is ok, cheap to live around, extremely low immigration, not an especially high crime rate, lots to do, good port for Northern Europe, handy underground network, reasonable shopping centre.

Negatives:

The accent; It's not as ear piercing as scouse but it is probably the hardest to understand when someone has a heavy one. Northern UK next to the north sea; it's cold (without being the interesting Nordic kind of cold) wet and grey. You are fucking miles from anything else, 2-3 hours from Liverpool and Manchester, 5 1/2 hours from London, airport is especially shit.

>>

Tobys can be really nice but it all depends on when you catch it. If they've got some nice seasonal veg out and you haven't got a chef rushing stuff out so it's under-cooked it's good. This is common for most caveries though, they all suffer from inconsistency (aside from one insanely nice one I have around the peak district)

They even have bread sauce now which is rare for carveries.

As someone who lives in the Northwest UK, I can honestly not imagine someone coming here. 95% of the country is a shithole. There are some nice mountains and lakes like the Lake District or Lochs in Scotland. But you can find those in Europe too and they're simply better.
