Next /twg/ meetup will be held in Barcade in Taipei sometime in November.
>>
Does anyone know of any events ON Halloween?
>>
>>2728039
There's one at NYCU, idk about any other events
>>
>>2727938
There is literally 0 reasons why I should ever move outside of taipei.

>>2728039
you should be out there lurking on facebook club/bar pages bro. Follow a few resident djs from a few clubs (especially foreigner ones) and you'll be set.

>>2727943
because you're trying to look like a regular type dude. take a few tinder pics where you're overdressed. Try to look like Lucifer from that faggot show.
>>
I want everyone reading this to know how jealous I am of your comfy lives on your comfy fucking island, I spent so many good times in that comfy city I’d give up my eyeballs to be able to live there eating $1.20 noodles every day going to art galleries and hiking on the weekends, Jesus Christ i couldn’t engineer a comfier country.
>>
>>2728034
why do you constantly choose shitty locations for meetups ? It honestly just sounds like you're selfishly choosing a place because you're an exchange student at NTNU looking to make some friends without even trying.

Gongguan riverside plaza is a far better location, great view, treasure hill is 5 mins away, we're 5 minutes away from the biggest 7/11 in taiwan so we can pack a couple beers and chill in front of the river. If it's rainy, the plaza is right beneath Fuhe bridge, so you get to be outdoors even with a shitty weather

Even the tards from the other thread that suggested paying 100$ to meet up at a festival are at least getting some fun out of it. If i'm meeting 4channers i'd at least like it to be fun, not some generic reddit-tier meetup with awkward tards at the least interesting place ever, terrified of being judged or would later make fun of people rather than enjoying an interesting moment.

Alternatively, Maji square is also nice. Good park, good food, free to sit wherever you want, and if you don't want to eat or drink you can just enjoy the vibe, with the same weather protection should things get wet.

>t. the guy with the blueetooth boombox smoking weed at greenriver park
>>
>>2728084
just don't come anon it's not that big of a deal
>>
>>2728084
Okay, anon I got the next spot. We meet up at 雪山, deal?
but yeah I'd be down for going to the festival area, I don't mind wasting 100$. Do people wanna go to the festival both days?
>>
Is China invading the country a real threat or is it a meme? I was under the impression the US would be backing Taiwan in an invasion event
>>
How would you spend two weeks in the country assuming you've never been before?
>>
>>2728128
Normies didn't even know this island existed until mutt propaganda went into overdrive. China isn't going to do shit. It's been 70 years since they tried.
>>
>>2728092
>>2728103
nah fuck you negroes i ain't comin
>>
>>2728142
Why do incels always believe everyone is as lame as they are?
>>
>>2728152
Maybe cause I'm not an incel and have a gf.
>>
>>2728128
It's a meme. Unless the US tries to put ICBMS on the island I guess
>>
>>2728151
nigga come or I'll come in your ass

It feels so good to see how active is the Taiwan general. I will be in Taiwan for the first time at the end of December cycling the #1 route and I cannot wait.
my plans are:
>NYE near Taipei 101
>go clubbing
>befriend Taiwanese qt who would show me around
do you guys have tips for a newcomer?
>>
>>2728189
visionary anon
would you like to be president?
>>
>>2728208
>NYE near taipei 101
Good idea, except the entirety of Taipei will go near 101 at the same time, which means 1) taxis will only get you so far within Da'an and Xinyi districts, so definitely have a plan or just stick around the area. Taipei 101 is gigantic and contrary to Tokyo, Taipei is pretty flat, so you don't worry about seeing the whole thing from afar. this being said the absolute best spot is around elephant mountain, but it will probably be taken over by SEAmonkeys trying to film that shit for the millionth time.

>go clubbing
Haven't been there for a while but it really depends on the kind of shit you're into. Ironically, what few clubs there are in taipei are way better than anything i've found in Japan, but that's not saying much.

>befriend taiwanese qt
get a few apps going five or six days before it, let them know you're coming to taiwan, pretend you're going to live there.
>>
>>2728225
Yes I will happily be president of Taiwan. First official act: decree reunification with the PRC
>>
>>2728137
In the cooler months, I'd head south along the Strait instead of north and east. Too gray and rainy.

Probably the comfiest city I've been to, but Taipei feels a lot like lite version of a Japanese city, especially in the more upscale areas. Most chain restaurants are Japanese, most of the stuff stores sell are Japanese, even the layout and architecture are similar. Kinda makes sense given their history as a Jap colony

>>2728253
As a rain and gloomfag I kinda loved the vibe of Taipei when I went on December. But yeah, it was a bit of a pain to get around
>>
>>2728128
The average Taiwanese isn't scared at all and after understanding Chinese culture from living in Taiwan and China for 5+ years I realized it's all just face culture shit not actual threats
>>
>>2728151
>Just don't come
>NO I'M NOT COMING
So you are giving him what he wants
>>
>>2728084
>Have Taiwan general for months
>People suggest meetups that never happen
>Some anons finally actually do a meetup instead of focusing on trying to find the objectively best location possible
>The faggots who didn't show up and couldn't get a meetup started get mad
It's not hard faggot. If you want a better spot just say "hosting meet up here at this time". It doesn't matter if it's in the OP or not.
>>
>>2728208
if you like clubbing go to final or pawnshop. final is more avant garde and smaller but it's less gay. pawnshop isn't strictly a gay club but it's where a lot of gays hang out and there's a darkroom for sex. i like the music at pawnshop better and there seems to be more girls there too. there are actually a lot of great clubs in taipei. they're better than a lot of the clubs i went to in tokyo.
>>
>>2728128
the invasion threat is mainly used by the CCP for internal propaganda. they can't even take kinmen after 80 years and you can swim to kinmen from xiamen.

"China's final warning" (Russian: пocлeднee китaйcкoe пpeдyпpeждeниe, romanized: posledneye kitayskoye preduprezhdeniye) is a Russian ironic idiom originating from the Soviet Union that refers to a warning that carries no real consequences.[1]

Relations between the People's Republic of China and the United States during the 1950s and 1960s were strained because of disputes over the political status of Taiwan. American military fighter jets regularly patrolled and performed fighter maneuvers in the Taiwan Strait, which led to formal protests being regularly lodged by the Chinese Communist Party in the form of a "final warning".[2] The People's Republic of China released its first "final warning" to the United States on 7 September 1958 during the Second Taiwan Strait Crisis.[3] By the end of 1964, more than 900 such "final warnings" had been issued.[4] However, no real consequences were levied for ignoring the "final warnings".[2]

bro, you're the one flooding every taiwan thread since covid with mainlander propaganda. What people say here is what the taiwanese believe and what is probably true - china won't do shit, it's not convenient for them to do shit.

They've said something about China possibly launching an invasion during election season, but we're a literal week away from it and they haven't done shit. Know why ? Because they know better than we do that everyone across the board is pro taiwan. We're not relinquishing our presence in the Pacific yet -and good for us. It takes a literal traitor to your own people to side with China. I bet you're sucking putin's cock in every eastern european thread too.

Also, i'd take the captain of the good ship lollipop over any admiral of the chinese navy. And that's after watching their own presentation of their own shit, kek.

Is it true that you can get around Taiwan decently enough speaking Japanese?
It seems a bit too good to be true.

No, the only people that speak Japanese are some old grandparents or workers at restaurants/bars that cater to Japanese business travelers.

I got a job in Taiwan starting in August. Anything I should know about the place? Any must sees or places to avoid? I've never been to Asia before. I'm going to try to learn some Mandarin but it's difficult to find resources that use traditional characters.
>>
Anyone live in Hsinchu and know some decent and affordable hotpots? 6owl Door is pretty good, just thinking if there are anything else like that in the area.
>>
>>2729684
not at all true. i've met 2 people who are old enough to have learned japanese in school. but for both of them this was only in elementary school now 80 years ago. so if you consider your level of language in elementary school plus 80 years of lost time plus a weird pidgin of hokkien/mandarin/colonial japanese intelligible, and you only want to talk to people knocking on deaths door, then sure you can speak japanese in taiwan no problem.

most people in taipei under 30 barely even speak taiwanese anymore they all speak mandarin.
>>
>>2729620
>day 1: elephant mountain, taipei 101, chiang-kai shek memorial, lungshan temple, then ximending
>day 2: palace museum, aboriginal museum, go to hot springs in beitou
>day 3: go to jiufen if the weather is shit, if the weather is good go to yangmingshan or a beach like fulong depending on your prefrence. all of these are day trips from taipei.

that's a pretty classic taiwan vacation right there.

So if I have a graduates (MBA) degree from public university in US, and like 10k saved up, is it possible that I can just basically show up and find a job teaching english in any city off of tealits or davesesl? Just find an AirBnB in a city for two months, and job hunt and find more stable housing during that time? Native English, pretty decent Spanish, zero Mandarin.
>>
>>2730368
Damn, are u retarded? Stay in US and draw a US salary. Come to taiwan on vacation.
>>
>>2730368
Pretty sure you need either a TEFL cert or a teaching license to legally get a visa for a job, but you can easily get a TEFL cert in just a few days. The job market in Taiwan seems pretty good but almost all jobs are in Taipei.

t. knower
>>
>>2730370
I mean yeah. Also not looking to vacation. Looking for gap year country. Salary isn't really important as long as making some kind of surplus

TEFL cert helps but you're already massively overqualified. unironically if you're white and a native english speaker that's all it takes really besides some elbow grease.

>>2730371
It's the opposite. There are more jobs outside of Taipei because of lack of competition with other foreigners
>>
>>2730376
Don't move to Taipei if you are looking for work. There is more demand outside of Taipei so you can get paid more. Only move to Taipei if you want to live in Taipei. You can literally work anywhere as long as the city has over 40k people. I live in a rural area where there are 4X more jobs than foreigners. People beg me to work for them.

Yeah but not knowing mandarin is why I would probably gravitate more towards Taipei in hopes of getting broken English more available
>>
>>2730670
rip oh well. Do you speak Mandarin? I've been trying to learn it but suck ass
>>
>>2730368
Yes. All you need is a college degree and a 120hr TEFL certification (can be completed online in a single sitting for about 50 dollars). Although I recommend just coming here via one of the large schools (HESS, Shane, Eagle, etc). They do a lot of the leg work getting you in the country, helping you find an apartment, and the jobs are simple. However, the job might suck, it's very branch dependent. You can easily just quit after a year once you've got yourself settled in.
>>
>>2730700
the main qualifications are being 1) a native english speaker 2) have a college degree and 3) not being a crayon munching retard. having an MBA from america knocks off all 3

>>2730834
what causes you to live in mainland? It doesn't really seem worthwhile in terms of jobs for me unless I get something remotely
>>
>>2730847
It offers the best lifestyle in all of Asia imo. Best combination of reasonable (if not outright low) cost, but first world and casual (not uptight autistic rules society like Korea/Japan). Taipei is better as a standalone city than anything mainland has to offer (except maybe Shanghai) but for me the access to a bigger country for travel without needing to cross border makes Mainland better homebase overall.

I have no idea what the job situation is like. If you have to ask you're probably not a candidate for the cushy expat jobs but idk. I came digital nomading many years ago and married into PR
>>
>>2730845
Lambai is great, well worth a visit. Extremely overcrowded but this is Asia. The weird little hiking trails are very cool and you can snorkel with sea turtles.
>>
>>2730700
Bro, you’ll be fine. I got hired as an English teacher just a few weeks ago and I got no experience working in the classroom nor with kids. The only main requirements immigration cares about are:
1) you’re from the big seven countries
2) you have a bachelors degree from an accredited university
3) you have a clean background check

My degree’s not even related to education at all, and the interview I had with the school were mostly getting to know me. Be confident, don’t be a pussy, and realise you’ll either be teaching simple shit like “pin” or “win” to small kids or grammar like infinitives. I don’t speak any Chinese at all and don’t live in Taipei and I’m doing fine. That other poster who says you NEED a TEFL is wrong. TEFL, CELTA or any other certifications can be useful, but it’s not mandatory. Most of my coworkers I met with don’t even have a TEFL certification, and the ones that do have it they don’t even use what they were taught because the school has their own teaching philosophy. If you work for a reputable, decent school, they will train you up during orientation. I had nerves on my first day and it was a lot better and easier than I expected. Don’t be a drooling retard, learn and adapt to your surroundings. I can’t say anything about the big chains like HESS and Shane, but I know a coworker started her teaching career at HESS and she told me there have some sketchy practices. If you ever apply to HESS, don’t accept their advance loan and don’t give your passport to them. They WILL take your passport away and you can’t leave the country until you pay that shit off. That’s word of mouth, but also have read reviews about that online.

Another thing you should know is that semester started in September. Peak hiring season usually happens 1-2 months before that in June/July. The next semester starts in February. If you were to apply now, I would suggest looking for schools that hire all year round. You may not necessarily be teaching full time when you get hired. You could be either coteaching or working as a substitute teacher to fulfil your minimum teaching hours.

Nothing in the city proper. There is small art museum near the train station I guess. You should just take a bus or rent a scooter and go to 鹿港老街, a much better use of your time.
>>
>>2731494

How possible is this without a motorcycle license? Would an international car license be sufficient?

It's not impossible, but just forget it. Plenty of buses you can take.

Shanghai has more of a first-world feel than anywhere in Taiwan outside of a couple neighborhoods in Taipei, yes. And I say that as someone whose favorite city in the world is Taipei fwiw
>>
>>2731533
First World means everything clean, well-maintained and with a high level of social order. Taiwan has built countless high-rises, but traditional urban street life still thrives, it hasn't been erased by western-style gentrification. If you don't look up from time to time it's easy to forget the tall buildings even exist.
>>
so how weird are the people who show up to the meets exactly? like on a scale of drives a hummer in taipei to regular human being

>Did you find your work on tealit?
No, I applied to schools directly. See if they have a contact form, a vacancy page or an email so you can introduce yourself and send them your resume.
>How did you go about finding housing relative to where you work.
I was in the country before I got a job offer. I suggest you apply, get a job offer and then weigh your options. It’s no point looking at housing accommodations in Taipei if your job is in Kaohsiung. I also doubt that real estate agents and landlords will be willing to rent housing out without any proof of long term stay. Some schools also have a benefit where they either have temporary housing for new teachers to settle in Taiwan or will try to assist you with accommodation and other paper work. Another option is for you to stay at a hotel for a few days and sort out your accommodation while you’re in the country.

I plan on traveling to Taiwan by myself in April for three weeks, I'm trying to figure out a rough itinerary, I looked at the past /twg/ and looked at the lonely planet book and made this plan.
Can anyone please tell me if this is a good idea, or if there are any better ideas.

Taipei 2
Jiufen && Jinguashi 1
Taroko National park if available 2
Taitung 1
Lanyu Island 2 I plan on diving here
Kenting 3
Kaohsiung 2
Tainan 1
Alishan 2
Taichung 2
Taipei 3 this was just to fill in 21 days,

I plan on doing more active things than just visting temples since I have been to Kyoto before.
I just want to do fun things and see cool shit, I don't plan on renting a car, but I plan on getting an IDP to drive a scooter in Lanyu.
I've thought of climbing Xueshan, but I don't think I should do it by my self considering I've never hiked before lol.

the only move that works is the anti-move

like if you have a plan, or you try a "line," you're basically fucked, they can smell a trap and they shut down

just be genuine and candid and pretend you don't give a shit about anything aka be confident
>>
>>2732661
you want to get their attention, then get their name, then get their time. the best approach is to just be honest
>hello
>"hi"
>i wanted to talk to you because you look cool/cute/interesting/whatever you noticed about them
>"oh thanks"
>i'm anon
>"i'm girlname"
>what are you doing
>"i'm meeting my friend/going to work/nothing"
>oh you should hang out with me instead
most of the time you won't even get that far because people have their own lives or already have boyfriends or just aren't in the mood. but after you get past the first 5 minutes there's no secret to attraction: it's all proximity, eye contact and smelling good.

a lot of people are like you where they "make lots of eye contact but never say anything." the number 1 thing that generates a connection between 2 people is proximity. that means you literally have to be close to each other. it's just a psychological fact that people don't develop relationships by staring at each other from across the street. and whether you like it or not men are braver than women. so you have to physically walk up to the girl and start the conversation. but that's the hardest part. statistically speaking for a successful relationship the moment when you first meet is when she likes you the least. after that the proximity and eye contact is continually generating more and more attraction to each other.
>>
>>2732251
Dating apps?
If you're like me and you don't like approaching random women they can be a pretty decent alternative
>>
>>2732682
you're acting like you can win a boxing match without getting punched. yes it is scary. do it anyway! first one seems impossible, first 10 are terrifying, after 100 it's honestly just kind of boring because you realize how predictable peoples' reactions are.

Hello /twg/. Starting next week I'll be living in Taipei for 6 months and half. Wenshan district. Why? Uni scholarship.
I need advice on.. everything. I've never left my country before so this is all a new experience for me. One thing that bothers me the most though: I can't find a decent place to rent, and I fear getting ripped off. Guess I'll try to get an hotel or an airbnb for the first week or two and try my luck from there, dunno.

xueshan is the most magnificent hike I've done in the 40+ countries I've visited. I chose it at random, figuring I had to leave the city at least once to hike something. We barely had any visibility the whole time, but that made it feel like walking through an old landscape painting. I was smiling like a dipshit at the top.
Unfortunately the permitting process is annoying as fuck and I got escorted into a ranger station office where a whole group of park officials tried to talk me out of climbing "because it was raining". I understand people die in that region pretty frequently but they must be city folk with no gear or experience. I really resented having to beg permission to use the permit I'd applied and paid for a month before. The altitude sickness did kick my ass, I admit.

Anyway good luck I wish I could do it with you guys.

hello, I'm a sperg
I've gone on tinder dates 3 times with taiwanese girls, 1 with a girl who is extremely direct and just wanted sex
The other 2 were normal dates ending with me sleeping in their bed, but I don't do anything more than that. Is it normal to just let strangers sleepover?
>>
>>2733827
idk wtf bro, she invited me to her birthday next month so I guess it's not all bad? I'm clueless
>>
>>2733826
What was the last letter of the name of the girl who was direct? Y?

>>2733827
I was actually waiting to make a move on a woman once we went to bed a few months ago because I knew she was interested and I saw no point of rushing it. We got into bed and before I started anything she asked "do you even like sex?" Lol
>>
>>2733844
Yeah, she said that she's used to guys trying pretty hard pretty quick and we'll before bed time, so she kicks them out.
>>
>>2733838
>Y
LOL YES?? lmao, how'd you know?
>>2733839
I have cosmic levels of autism, but only in regards to intimacy rest is fine.
Do you just start touching her or what? I'm risk adverse and will not do anything unless I'm certain.
She was complimenting my eyes again this morning, calling them charming while in bed, but uhh idk where to go from there
>>
>>2733849
Because I have also had sex with her a few times and I know what she's like. She goes through a lot of men and she has practically no standards. I really want to know what her deal is, but she's super private so she never lets anything on.

She is a sexy little thing too, but the sex is way too boring for me to go back again. Got some other women instead.

Also please don't be a turd and share her identity with others, she's weird but she doesn't deserve to be treated badly.
>>
Hm girl who goes straight for sex with foreigners and name ends with a Y. There is one person I'm thinking of but she lives in Taichung, not Taipei.
>>
>>2733852
>gay
she did ask if I was gay when I said I never had a girlfriend lmao
>>2733853
wild that you could guess it based off that lmao, small country
yeah idk really. We also just hung out for a few hours last time, which was chill, but not really sure what's going on in her mind
>share
obviously not, that would be weird af
>>
>>2733855
That could be her, she travels to Taipei usually on Thursdays.

Any idea what her deal is?
>>
>>2733858
Her husband is a literal cuck and she loves fucking foreigners. Not that hard to figure out. Years ago she used to post her hook ups on Reddit. Shame she deleted her account.
>>
>>2733855
mmm the girl I'm thinking of definitely doesn't live there
>>
>>2733868
Probably lots of such girls I guess?
Doesn't really matter anyways
>>
>>2733868
Is that so? I guess she could have lied about her age but when I hooked up with her last year she was apparently 20, so it might be someone else. Or I can't tell age for shit.

Damn I want to solve this mystery, too bad that reddit account is dead. Ah well, no point dwelling on boring sex.
>>
There is still content up. I don't really care so just search jennytaichung and you can decide if that was her or not.
>>
>>2733878
Nah that's not her. Doesn't matter, I'll batman this another day
>>
What's the best/comfiest city or town in south/east Taiwan to explore for a day? I'm going cycling around the island, starting in Taipei, and want a rest day somewhere in the south before heading back north. I'm guessing Tainan is the obvious choice, but thought I'd ask if there are any nice off-the-beaten-track towns in the area for fattening up and maybe visiting some museum or historic sites.
>>
>>2733988
I really enjoyed Kaoshiung and everything was close (on bike)
>>
>>2733853
>has practically no standards
Speaking of, what's the standard for
the average taiwanese woman? Is being tall, not fat, and having hair enough to pull? It can't be that easy, right?
>>
>>2734438
Most of my women friends here have given chances to short ugly bald guys, who then fuck it up by being gross sexist fuckwits.

Bring a decent person works. I'm average looking and poor as hell but I still found some amazing women by not being 4chan minded.
>>
>>2734530

Reddit is down the hall and to the left

>>
>>2734530
Thanks for the heads up, I was talking more about the female gaze type of thing to make a good first impression, but that's good too.
I don't even care about sex at this point, I just want to load tinder/bumble and get a qt to show me around, a tourist guide you may say lol. There is probably an specific app for what I'm asking but I'm not well versed in those.
>>
>>2734600
That's ezpz even for this retard here, just do it
>>
>>2734567
I am a 4chan cliche sexist fuckwit and I have plowed thru half of Taipei
>>
>>2734683
If you're hiding who you are and lying about who you are it doesn't really count. That just means you admit that your core being is repulsive, assuming you're tell the truth and you most likely aren't

But if all you're after is sex then by all means, count it
>>
>>2734600

They were waiting for you to make a move. By not fucking them you probably left those women with crippling self doubt and worry that there is something wrong with them they can't see.

How much salary do you guys think is required to live like a king in Taipei? Nice apartment, go out to eat and drink often, go to shows, whatever
>>

Does living like a king include putting money away for the future? Depends on what area you want to live and what a "nice" apartment is to you. Does going out to eat mean going to western restaurants or more local stuff? Drinking at clubs or dives?

If you do shit like a local you can live like a king for like 60k, if you wanna do shit like you did back home you are probably going to need more.

Even if you did 30k on rent/utilities/etc, 30k left over still lets you throw around 7500 a week. Budget about 300 a day for meals, you've got 5400 to blow. That's enough for a few fun nights out or dining at some fancier restaurants. I'd honestly have trouble spending that much unless I was actively going to bars with 400+ cocktails.

What's the law around visa runs in Taiwan? Not working illegally or remotely, I just want to stay here with my girlfriend. I've already been here a total of three times with the stamps marked in my passport - one last year and twice this year with 90 max for all of them.

Thanks anon, this was helpful. Living like a local king is good enough.

Why do people insist on using the "live like a king" phrasing when what you obviously mean is "how much for decent middle/lower middle class comforts while still saving"
>>
>>2741300
That’s fair, anon, but I’m retired and naturally not a big spender on things like famous brands or cars - I have the freedom to study Mandadin full time and do whatever I want with my free time which, to me, feels like living like a king.

Serious question: is there any reason to go to Taipei over, like, Tokyo? I feel like every Asian megacity is just a shittier version of Tokyo
>>

It's cheaper, women are easier and landlords don't jew you as much.

you could get an apartment near zhongxiao fuxing for like 1.5k USD

>>2741644
taiwan has best nature in asia. best wildlife. people still act like humans in taiwan instead of megacity bugs like in tokyo. taiwan is also very unique in terms of culture. it's not really western or chinese or japanese or aboriginal but a mix of all. but i agree if you just want generic luxury experiences tokyo is better.

It's cheaper than Japan and Singapore, has better food and beaches than Korea, but you're not in as much danger from food poisoning/rip-offs compared to Vietnam/Phillipines/Thailand.

What stands out to me about Taipei is this weird harmony between the pretty and modern....

I actually enjoy walking around the Taipei suburbs. The crowdness is novel to me, and it feels like an adventure just letting my whims guide me. I just wish they don't have so many scooters.

yes your picture is good illustration i think. it looks like one of those old school workshops in a delhi slum or something. but it's only 30 mins from a superconductor fab. and thank god in heaven taiwanese aren't as poor or dirty or smelly as indians.

>people still act like humans in taiwan instead of megacity bugs like in tokyo

People act like the exact same in Taipei city. And it would be unfair to compare the whole island to the single biggest city in Japan.

The people from osaka/kyoto are way more chill

I'm going to spend a couple of months in Kaohsiung from next month. I wasn't planning to do much, but I recently decided I will learn some basic Chinese so I figured if I'm going to be there, I may as well see if I can find some classes. Any recommendations or pointers? I only demand that it is in person because what's the fucking point otherwise, also not 1-on-1 because I'm too awkward for that

I don't really trust much of whatever I can find online about something like this because the results are always gonna be full of shilled/ paid advertising trash/ scams
>>
>>2747563
not in kaohsiung and i don't know much about the city but here's a couple of three things

if you're only staying a couple of months (i'm guessing 3-4 ?) you're not going to learn much by taking classes in Taiwan. A lot of it will focus on zhuyin aka bopomofo which is basically a chinese "hiragana" that they use as a way to phonetically describe a word. It is a pain in the ass and rendered absolutely obsolete to westerners due to the fact that pinyin does this sufficiently well... and that bopomofo is only used in Taiwan.

Also, i think the bigger point is to actually go with personal, one on one classes. There are two major difficulties in chinese, and that's learning words and pronunciation. Group classes don't give you enough time to work on pronunciation and every fucking chinese class will have you write chinese characters for days on end which is a retarded and outdated concept. You will never need to handwrite chinese characters when you have smartphones and keyboards, but you will certainly need to fucking speak the language.

Oh and last but not least, taiwanese people, especially hakka, are hillbillies that speak with a lisp and do sound a little faggoty to the rest of the chinese world.

If you want to spend your bucks writing characters for days and not actually practicing your pronunciation while also fucking it up because the person teaching it may not even be teaching you the accepted standard phonetics, be my guest. Otherwise you could literally go on preply, find a chinese person who can teach you for 10 bucks an hour your own way. And they will inevitably offer you to switch to personal classes so you eventually get off the platform and do your thing.

right, thanks for answering, seems like a bit of a non starter then. just been doing duolingo so far but i guess i'll try to find a gf to bully me into speaking properly
>>
>>2747590
Just make anki flashcards with google translate sounds or Amazon polly. With all the AI shit you can learn to pronounce things on your own.
>>
>>2747590
Lol bro forget Duolingo. Pirate the Michel Thomas course and download Skritter. You'll be able to have basic conversations within a month.

I go to school at a US college triple majoring in english, chinese and journalism. It's always been my plan to move abroad, travel the world, making friends from all corners - that sort of thing. Recently the US has felt far less safe, specifically for my demographic and I'm thinking about somehow transferring to a Taiwanese university. Does anyone here have experience with this?
>>
>>2747911
no, i am enjoying duolingo and it is working very well for me so i will stick with it

Met a nice taiwanese girl on new years eve, she was definitely interested. We had a lot of fun despite her limited english, even asked for my LINE and everything, but my autistic ass doesn't know how to follow up and she hasn't really texted me since then. Oh well.
It's a sad life.

>>
>>2749054
Yeah, duolingo is way too fixated on learning through repetition and achieving stupid goals, it builds a semblance of a foundation but you will still struggle for weeks IRL while you learn how to use what you learned in an actual conversation.
>>
>>2749235
This is the point; you can have 1000 characters memorized in your passive memory and you won't even be able to recall 100 of them in your active vocabulary. This is the curb duolingo drops your ass off on after having its way with you. Anyone who has a satisfying conversation with a local after finishing duolingo can tell me I'm wrong.
Learning to recognize characters vs learning to speak can be completely separate activities. I try to add 5-10 new words to my spoken vocabulary every day, but I don't even worry about memorizing the characters. If I get around to those characters in my skritter deck then great, if not it doesn't really matter.
