The catch is that it's just a worse Thailand in every way that matters.
Also it's really awkward and shitty having to use a mix of USD and local riels, along with the inevitable scamming that arises with counterfeit bills in your change and minor damaged bills not being accepted even if you got them out of an ATM.
Its a lot more predatory and hostile late at night in the city, and foreigners can and do get mugged or beat up regularly.
The poverty is stark and the desperation is real. Everything is way more grim and desperate than Thailand nightlife I mean you can tell people are really fucked in a lot of cases, and not just hooking because they are lazy or got told by their parents to do it.

It's very similar to Thailand, and that's the problem in and of itself. You will compare everything to Thailand and wonder why you are putting up with the shittiness of cambodia. Unless you are a wanted criminal, a drug addict, or a pedophile, there is no reason to be in cambodia.

The internet really sucks there and the city itself is very polluted and lacks coastal breezes. The Chinese fucked up everything with half baked investment schemes that fell apart for various reasons meaning half built skeletons of buildings everywhere which will never be finished.

PP is 15/20 years behind Bangkok in terms of modernization and amenities. They put up a good facade in places like Russian market and some of the rich neighborhoods, but the fact is the wealth on display is as deep as a puddle and mostly cope. It's totally superficial.

Bangkok has blazed forward these past few years and come a long way. PP has only stagnated and degraded. It's totally dependent on Chinese money, and Chinese have their own problems at the moment so investment/money hiding in cambodia slowed way down.

It's kind of funny after talking so much shit about it I sort of want to pop over and see how it's doing. Haven't been in about a year, so I'm curious if the bar district has recovered at all (I doubt it).

Siem Reap is full of bars, although mostly catering to binge-drinking backpackers, especially Brits (and more than a few appear to be run by alcoholic British men), rather than sleazier entertainment. I’m sure sleazy bars exist, but they’re far outnumbered by more generic places just shilling buckets of beer. They may even be outnumbered by bars pretending to be classy, for NGO-type expats; there are wine bars, expensive cocktail joints, etc.
Alongside the scumbags alluded to above, the foreign scene in Cambodia is hyper-saturated with ostensible do-gooders pissing away government grant money in tropical knockoffs of French restaurants.

I also don’t really like SR, because it’s been massively overdeveloped for tourism. Phnom Penh may be a shithole, but it’s still got local cultural flavor that Siem Reap has been plastering over for decades, and only some of its economy is extracted from tourists and foreign aid. In SR it feels like tourism is the only game in town, and the infrastructure and authenticity have suffered for it. Angkor is an indisputable must-see, and it deserves the crowds it draws, but the city itself hasn’t been improved for it.

The only part of Cambodia worth visiting was the South until the Chinks destroyed Otres beach with casinos. Koh Rong was ruined by yolo party retards and pollution. Dunno what Kampot is like these days. Chinks even built a giant port on Koh Tonsay. I won't ever be going back.

Anyone got advice for a degree-less American interested in pursuing a CELTA certification and teaching in Cambodia?

Reading the comments here makes me think everyone hates Cambodia/PP. I don't have a degree so my teaching options are limited. Seems like Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar are the only places I could teach until I get experience. Myanmar is obviously war-torn rn, don't know enough about Laos.

Rent and food seem pretty cheap but the someone said the wages for teaching (especially without a degree) are terrible. Is this true? What's like a healthy budget for a single guy? Any schools/scams I should look out for?

The issue with living in shitholes is the streets are sweltering, hectic and unpleasant places used for business only. What do you do in your free time? Lay in bed all day? In a semi-civilized setting you'd have parks, temples and other desirable public spaces to visit daily. It makes a lot of difference in quality of life. I guess this is why so many foreigners want to live near a beach, it is a great public space.

Ushered into a sort of makeshift living room, I am told that in the daytime the neighborhood is a typical Cambodian slum, full of street vendors and the thick, mysterious flow of motorbikes. On the walls are several signs in Vietnamese, local beer ads and Backstreet Boys posters. I sit on a crusty sofa, across from the Vietnamese pimp speaking broken Cambodian to Mr. Yo.


Four young Vietnamese girls enter the room. The pajama-clad quartet storms in like the kids they are, all giggles and restless energy amidst the boredom of the metal and concrete room. The girls, who look about 10 to 12 years old, climb over the pimp like he's their father, tweaking his ears and messing his hair. One sits down next to me. There is no sign of fear or physical abuse. I try to get my head around the family atmosphere and keep the noticeably sexualized youngsters on the other side of the room.
