Is it France? Where have you traveled with the best cheese anons?
It's France. They say Louis XIV got caught by the revolutionaries because he stopped to picnic with a wheel of camembert.
11x cheese world championyou'll never sing that
>>2735509the uk. mainly england, but wales and scotland do their bitthe frogs don't like it but the uk has more regional cheeses than francemost european countries have at least a couple of great cheeses thoughi'm sure the usa does too, but unfortunately they are more associated with cheese that comes in a squirty canhonourable mention to australia+nz too
1. France2. Spain3. Italy4. Switzerlandand then everyone else
>>2735509I don’t think there’s any country in Europe that’s actually *bad* at cheese, although variety may be limited and local specialties not to everyone’s palate. But France, Switzerland, and Italy have IMO the highest baselines.>>2735553Agreed that good cheese in the UK can hold its own against any in the world.>>2735553>USAThere’s fancypants artisanal cheese in the US that is excellent, but most people don’t eat it. Supermarket-standard cheese (real cheese, not cheese food product) is fine but forgettable anywhere apart from in dairy heartlands; Wisconsin, America’s Dairyland, has fresh cheese curds that aren’t exciting but are delicious and of high quality.
>>2735516>Louis XIV>revolutionariesWut.
>>2735553>the frogs don't like it but the uk has more regional cheeses than franceThere is no way to know that thoughWhen I go to the supermarket in my part of France, there will be all the "national" cheeses for sale as well as dozens of different ones only made and sold in that area. Basically every other village with have a small producer. Then if I go to a supermarket in another French region, again there will be all the national cheeses and quantity of local made ones that won't be available in other French regions, also made by a variety of small time farmersThat amounts to literally hundreds of little known cheeses across the countryThen when it comes to the more famous ones, mainly those that were granted PDO and PGI such as roquefort, camembert, saint-nectaire, comté etc etc, all of these also come in different versionsThe cheese store I go to will have those coming from several differents farms, the supermarket will have several different brands, all of that again amounts to all of different regional cheeses. Then you can also factor in things like "fromage d'été" and "fromage d'hiver" which is the same cheese made at different times of the year when the animals haven't been grazing on the same flora and thus produce cheese with very different flavors. After that add the pasteurized/raw milk versions which are also different. And the aging time.Where do you draw the line to count how many cheeses a country has ? Neither you nor I know who out of the UK and France has "more regional cheeses"That said I would still put my money on France, because our terrain is simply more diverse than the UKBritain doesn't have high alpine meadows for its cheeses, or dry Mediterranean scrublands for instance. The variety of cheeses is first a variety of grazing grounds for animalsThat said I absolutely love British cheeses, don't get me wrong, but I just think you can't really back up the claim that the UK has more different ones
>>2735570France > CH > Italy > Spain>>2735541This needs an update, I believe Portugal won this year
>>2735516>They say Louis XIV got caught by the revolutionaries because he stopped to picnic with a wheel of camembertThen he said "hon hon hon, off with their heads".American schools everyone.
>>2735553>has more regional cheeses than francequality over quantity though. I never EVER see UK cheese anywhere other than cheddar, so you might have many but none that are special enough to be exported. Switzerland to me has the best ones but France clearly has the most famous, luxurious, most exported cheeses.
>>2735541>austria not even mentionedY'all r a bunch of niggers.
France for sure. I bought a block of cheese, a baguette and a dried sausage and ate that as my lunch every day for 2 weeks when I was traveling through Provence. French bakeries shred everywhere else I've been in Europe too. I'd probably put Italy second on the cheese list. But only because they're good at sandwiches. A lot of European countries are terrible at making sandwiches. They don't use greens, spices or sauces. It's just meat and cheese. But the Italians know how to do it.
>>2735509burgerlurker here and i've never left the states but my friend in brazil says minas gerais has the best cheese.
>>2736200Lots of good cheeses in Brazil and Argentina because of the large Italian immigration. Provoleta (sp?) is god-tier.
>>2735623>>2735846Nnn...nnnnn...No, he didn't!
>>2736210Not them but the issue isn't about cheese it's more that Louis XIV died 75 years before the revolutionIt was Louis XVI that got beheadedNot that I actually expect non-French people to know thatIf you ask random frogs in the street what year did America declare independance or what was the name of the Russian tsar when the communist revolution happened, chances are most of them won't know
Holland. A visit to Albert Heijn offers a great selection.
>>2735509England, you can get some decent cheddar and a pint there and if lucky check out a football match.
>>2735553Sure sure, we're puttin on the ritz. This ez-cheese is only snack size for us Americans. Now you know why we annoy you and have fun doing it.

>>2735553what are the best English cheeses?
>>2737207obsessed
>>2737214Yes
>>2737214I like Stilton
>>2735509America. Every fatfuck walking around has naturally occurring cheese formation between their fat rolls.
>>2737904Is it also plastic?
Literally nothing beats a nice camembert with a hot crispy baguette
Roqueforte, Gorgonzola, Cheddar and GruyèreAnything else sucks
>>2739260Pleb
>>2738046Microplastics
>>2737214here's one for ya anon. sinodun hill. it is said to be among the best (if not the best) goat's cheeses in the world right now.>>2737715stilton is absolutely the king of cheese
>>2739625Roquefort is the true king of blue cheese
>>2735509If you enjoyed cheese to any moderately sophisticated level you'd know the answer to this question
>>2735553>"Regional cheese">It's yet another whitish, semi-soft unaged cow or goat's milk cheese Brits will produce the same thing 3 steps away and call it something different, that's the only reason. I don't think England even *has* an equivalent to brie, feta, halloumi, parmesan, gouda, or anything with a unique character or purpose. It's always just "here's smooth/blue nibbling cheese #450"
>>2735509Greece has some of the best cheeses. They even make good vegan cheeses because Orthodox people fast and avoid during religious fasting.
>>2740044>vegan cheesesNot cheeseI'm not saying they can't be good, I wouldn't know since I've never had any, I am also not saying I am against vegans or whateverBut vegan cheese is an absolutely impossible combination of word when cheese is literally dairy. It's as stupid as vegan meat. Calling something vegan because it contains some animal products that have been removed such as a cake without egg sounds ok, but calling vegan products that are normally entirely made up of animal products will never not sound completely retarded to meBut well I guess it's just convenient to call them vegan cheese instead of cheese imitation and fake cheese is too negative so we're stuck with that
>>2735509All the romantics have great cheese but France is king in this dominion
