A bit grim this isn't it
>>2735621Roasties BTFO!
>>2735621Drink only beer in Laos
Don't go to tourist traps either, and keep only a little cash in your wallet.
>>2735621Stay away from third world shitholes
>>2735652No
>>2735621why is a 19 y/o roastie drinking alcohol in some SEA shithole called "Laos"?
Lightweights. I've drunk 10 baht backstreet moonshine scooped out of a bucket many a time, never did me any harm.
>>2735621>>2735652I should stay away from third world shitholes like USA, but it was nice to explore there. Water quality was really bad and even the bottled water was worse than is accepted safe level in my home country. I used filter every time I drinked water that I bought there.
>News reports and testimonies suggest the tourists may have consumed alcohol laced with methanol - a deadly substance often found in bootleg alcohol.>Medical specialists say drinking as little as 25 millilitres of methanol can be fatal, but it is sometimes added to drinks because it is cheaper than alcohol.Wtf? Ok it's cheaper but it's a fucking POISON. I don't even see how that works out for people selling bootleg alcohol if all their customers drop over dead.
>>2735772You're supposed to mix it with ethanol since it counteracts methanol. People died because whatever retarded monkeys that were mixing that shit fucked up big time, obviously no one wants consumers to die from that shit.
>>2735734I'm a ruralfag who's well is tapped into caves. The freshest mineral water one can get, and some Brazilian once tried to tell me, the Sam Diego tap water I was drinking, tasted like chorine. What I'm trying to say is, it's probably just something you created in your head, like communist shitholes are safe.
>>2735621I stayed at the same hostel (Nana's) just one month ago, and drank the same free shots. They tasted rough, but cheap vodka tastes rough anywhere in the world
>>2735621girls are dumb
>buy illegal alcohol in a 3rd world country if you are this stupid you should really not be allowed to leave the country
>>2735812It was either sold at their hostel bar or at one of the local bars. Chances are that it was either sold in a bottle with unfamiliar branding, or one that had well-known branding but which had been emptied of the genuine stuff long ago, and was just getting refilled with the knock-off moonshine. If you're at a bar in a country like that (and Laos, whilst poor, is a pretty common backpacker destination, with millions of tourists each year), how are you meant to know which alcohol is legal and which is illegal? You just order your drink, and assume that the drinks industry is properly regulated and that things will be ok. Obviously in this situation, it wasn't. But the only solution is to never drink spirits in countries like this, and there are millions and millions of people (including me) who never took precautions like that
>>2735715Because if you drink excessively, you also end up drinking ethanol which counteracts the methanol. The odds that every 10 baht moonshine you drink in a night all have methanol is low. These girls probably just had these few shots that happened to have methanol since they weren't careful making it.
These stories are always fascinating to me. If my kid went on a trip and was murdered by some little brown rat, I would make it my life mission to kill that rat, or if they were inaccessible, to kill their entire family.I don't know why we don't hear about that sort of thing more often. Do peasants just forgive and forget that their family member was literally murdered? I can't comprehend it.The last time somebody fucked with my family they wound up in a hospital and too scared to file a police report. Why do people tolerate shit?
>>2735862What exactly are you advocating? That these middle-aged, middle-class parents hop on a plane to Laos, conduct a private investigation to identify the culprits before the police manage to, and beat the shit out of and/or kill everyone involved?Did you just want to sound like a tough guy online? These posts are always fascinating to me
>>2735709Sex tourism what else?
>>2735862seek help for your sadistic fantasies dude. It's not normal to be such a psychopath, especially towards some 3rd world shitter who accidently made poison that some kid accidently drank. It's not like some gang raped and killed them.
>>2735862> These stories are always fascinating to me. >>2735883Yeah, communist don't rape and murder innocent people.
>>2735887what? Why do you even have to bring up communism?
>>2735889People make me responsible for the things of our past, so why shouldn't we do that with them. What, are you racist.
>>2735709Vang Vieng is one of Laos' top tourist destinations.>>2735780If you think you're getting methanol poisoning, glug down as much safe liquor as you can handle. No joke, this is the medically approved antidote. Acetaldehyde is much less toxic than formaldehyde.
>>2735820just stick to the beer. especially in laos, don't take risks because there's nobody to help you there. those communist bastards will just laugh and watch you die. they think of it as revenge for bombing them back in the day.
>>2735621>Vang ViengI honestly don't know why this is making the news so much. They're not the first white backpackers to die in that shithole. Where were all the articles over 10 years ago when people kept drowning after having one too many moonshine buckets while floating on a flimsy tube down the river?
>>2735621What happens if you die in ThirdieLand? Do your family call the embassy and they send the body back?
>>2735862If your kids are drinking at some dive in Laos you've failed as a parent.
>>2735977Relax edge lord. Vang Vieng is a fun time. You can ride floatie donuts on the river while drinking and fingering barely legal aussies on schoolies.
>>2735892seriously what the fuck are you talking about? You are not any fucking sense.
>>2735947Pretty sure it made the news back then too desu, which is why the Laos government cracked down massively. It's well known that the tubing now isn't anywhere near as dangerous as it used to be. I did it a month ago and found it a little tame actually, now you just float down the river and stop off at 3 bars which sell only alcohol (i.e., no more easy drugs) and there's no more swings or slides at the side of the river. So the only real risk now is getting so drunk that you drown, and methanol poisoning if they give you dodgy drinks, I guess
>>2735621I drank moonshine "Raki" and "Vodka" all the time in eastern Europe. Also just bought bottles of mystery liquor in Bali and Lombok from some shady people. Survived it all. Travelling to 3rd world countries just has inherent dangers. You can die in all sorts of random ways. I almost died in a car crash in Myanmar once. It's the thrill of travel baby.
>>2735621This is awful.I feel so bad for their parents.
>>2735812Their hostel was giving out free shots
>>2736094Just because you survived being an idiot doesn't mean other people should partake in it. You can get drunk cheaply in all of these countries without drinking bootleg alcohol
>>2735966>they send the body back?it costs at least 10 grand to send your body back
>>2736194>You can get drunk cheaply in all of these countries without drinking bootleg alcoholThis is the issue though - how are you supposed to know? If you're getting your drinks from the hostel bar or from a bar in your town, how are you supposed to know that they've replaced the real stuff with knock-off bootleg spirits? It seems that's what happened in this case, they weren't even doing something as risky as trying something they knew was a local bootleg liquor.
what a waste of those nubile young bodies :(
>>2735621I'll be sticking with beer and if I go liquor it will be whiskey (which is less likely to be moonshine) that I see come out of a bottle.
not enough
>>2736264you have to stick to beer in the bars. if you want liquor go to a proper supermarket. counterfeit liquor is huge problem in latam as well but typically doesn't kill you
>>2735621>bbc breaking holly bowlesjesus fucking christ it's really over
>>2735621Youtubers make these shitholes look too accessible its irresponsible. Like Bald and Bankrupt just went through so much bullshit but he always smiled and laughed the entire time. It gives a bad impression. If you are a normie 19 year old girl you should NEVER do somewhere subhuman like Laos. The TikTokkers will always make it look so easy so they have this cool reputation. They bitch about it so much behind the scenes.
I'm not a decent-looking white girl, so traveling to third-world countries isn't nearly as dangerous for me.
>>2736472This "shithole" was already popular and accessible for backpackers before YouTube even existed. There's nothing inherently dangerous about the place itself, particularly since the Laos government cracked down on tubing in 2012 and made it way more tame. Laotians, like most southeast Asians, are polite, friendly, and non-violent. There's barely any violent crime there. It's not just hedonistic backpackers either - when I was there a month ago, I saw plenty of middle-aged and elderly tourists too. The only danger is from what you choose to do yourself at the bars, in terms of how much you drink and what drugs you take. Even so, I can hardly blame the victims here. By the sounds of it they just went to a bar, and ordered liquor. Sure, in retrospect we all know they shouldn't have done that, but this is literally the only case of methanol poisoning I can find for Vang Vieng, out of the millions of people who have boozed there in the last few decades. Most of us would drink liquor in developing countries or take a shot of local liquor if it was offered to us. Just horrible luck that these girls got the one deadly batch.
>>2736472>somewhere subhuman like Laosthye get a bus from one city to the next and are never in the shithole parts of Laos. luang prabang is one of the best small cities in asia. you seem weirdly bitter and angry in your post. unless you end up in the shady casino fiefdom next to the chinese border in laos there is literally no danger going about your business.
>>2736640>busMuch better to get the high-speed Lao-China railway desu, cuts a painful 6hr minibus journey down to 1hr on a very pleasant train
>>2736636news reports say it was the hostel (nana backpackers) that was giving out free shots that got everybody sick or dead. there are atually more dead victims who haven't been mentioned yet in the news for some reason, including an indian guy. don't accept free alcohol especially in communist hellholes like laos
>>2736698>saar do not redeem the methanol!!!Post source
>>2735984just a normal amerimuttbringing their insane politics in every discussion
>>2736645Doesn't the Chinese train have airplane-tier carry-on restrictions? What a pain in the ass.
>>2736645Can I use it as an American?
>>2736698I was originally defending the hostel (where I stayed too, and drank the free vodka) because it hadn't been confirmed that the dodgy booze was served there, and it could have been one of the bars in town. But then I saw the American who died is a 57 year old man who was also staying at the hostel. Seems very unlikely that he would have gone out drinking with a group of twentysomething girls, so I'm wondering if that proves it was the hostel after all. What makes you think an Indian guy has died too?>>2736717Yeah it's a bit annoying, they took my deodorant. Nice trains though >>2736779Yes
Website says tourist visa applications are processed in 3 business days. They did not define business day, evidently there haven't been 3 in the past eight days because my visa is still pending.
>>2736702it's some guy last name singh. you heard it here first.
>>2736958Karanvir Singh was the Indian employee at the hostel who found the body of the old american guy but Singh is still alive.
>>2735621I did a bit of researching and found someone wrote a warning post on reddit that was dismissed as misinfo lol https://www.reddit.com/r/laos/comments/1gu4rqs/drink_spiking_vang_vieng/but yeah, you should check the establishment before eating or drinking in third world shitholes. make sure the toilets are clean, staff attentive and where the stuff gets made is in plain sight. almost 100% certain Nana Backpackers fails at least 2 of these criteria
>>2735621Check out that dude with the white t-shirt, he looks like he's going to take a dump in the water.
>>2736800Maybe you're a suspicious character so your visa is delayed, any Aussie is suspicious.
>>2736979This went down in Laos, but the owner manager of the hostel is a Vietnamese dude. The guy that found the body was Indian, the dead guests are Europeans, Australians and Americans. It doesn't get more international than this.
>>2735875To be fair to him that does sound pretty badass
>>2735889>Why do you even have to bring up communism?>>2735984>You are not any fucking sense.>>2736712>bringing their insane politics in every discussion/trv/ is filled with no-travelers./sci/ is filled with pseudo-intellectuals./x/ is filled with LARPers.[sigh]...4Chan is reddit now...
>>2739217the government there consists of morons, completely inept, corrupt, incompetent all of the above. one of the worst violators of human rights in the world, so yeah, it's not a surprise that six tourists would die while the politburo sits around drinking beer
>>2739217>"/trv/ is filled with no-travelers."You don't really think that do you? Is it like a coping mechanism because you don't get to travel?
>>2735796SD has hard water and it tastes foul. is why everyone needs a water softener.
>>2735796I dug a well tapped into groundwater and a week later a wild housecat fell in and died.

https://edition.cnn.com/2024/12/15/world/fiji-tourists-cocktail-drinks-hospitalization-intl-hnk/index.htmlUh oh, not even 5 star resorts are safe.
>>2735649Coffee!
Enough people die of regular ethanol poisoning, but when it's methanol people lose their minds. I used to work in these places, the venues are safe places for kids, but they run off into the wilderness when drunk and at that point we can't look after them. They should stay in resorts.
