By the sounds of it they just went to a bar, and ordered liquor. Sure, in retrospect we all know they shouldn't have done that, but this is literally the only case of methanol poisoning I can find for Vang Vieng, out of the millions of people who have boozed there in the last few decades. Most of us would drink liquor in developing countries or take a shot of local liquor if it was offered to us. Just horrible luck that these girls got the one deadly batch.

Enough people die of regular ethanol poisoning, but when it's methanol people lose their minds. I used to work in these places, the venues are safe places for kids, but they run off into the wilderness when drunk and at that point we can't look after them. They should stay in resorts.
