The tax rate in Spain for anyone making over 100K is probably in the 40 percent range, which is insanely high compared to the US where it's more like 15-20 percent. However, the cost of living in Spain is lower. You can still find a luxury condo at a nice beach in Spain for less than $200K. That's not an option in California any more. You'd have to live in a trailer park in southern California to find something that cheap. This is why people in the US retire to Spain, rather than go there to work.
