Sweet wine is drunk; incredibly sloppy sandwiches, which despite being neither little nor French are called Francezinhas (‘little Frenchies?’) are eaten. Pic related.

>Should I go to Porto or Lisbon?
Portugal is a small country; Lisbon and Porto are less than three hours apart by train. Unless you’re just going for a weekend or something, it’s very easy to see both. I personally like Lisbon more than Porto (a bit larger, a bit more atmospheric, more central), but Porto is also nice, and a little cleaner. I have multiple friends who prefer it to Lisbon.

>And how good does my portuguese need to be? I learned Brazilian Portuguese, but portuguese niggas sound russian to my ears

Your Portuguese “needs” to be however good your Portuguese is when you land. My Portuguese is limited but my pronunciation is good, and people have always responded very positively to it—there are a number of older people without much English, and people seem to specifically appreciate it when tourists don’t just yell in Spanish* or English at them, but actually try to use Portuguese. My own Portuguese is also Brazilian, or started that way (teacher was from Rio), and people had no trouble understanding me, although it took me some time to understand them. I started sounding more continental and understanding people more comfortably after a couple of weeks in the country. Nowadays, having been to Portugal a bunch of times, Brazilians think my Portuguese sounds more Portuguese.

*To any Anons visiting Portugal who have some command of Spanish, be aware that although pretty much everyone in Portugal can understand Spanish easily enough, and more than a few can speak it, most people really don’t like it. In a lot of cases they would rather be forced to listen to English, or if they can speak it, French, neither of which is resented the way Spanish can be. So if you’re going to try to speak to people in Spanish, at least ask first.
