Hello /trv/,
I'm from Denmark and planning to travel to the US or NZ during my gap year. Are there any destinations you would recommend or experiences I must try if given the opportunity? My budget is approximately 150,000 DKK, which is around 20,974 USD.

great thread btw

America is very spread out so it's harder to spend more than a couple days per city, compared to Europe where many of the beautiful/historical landmarks are concentrated in the capitals. Since America's public transport also sucks, a lot of your time and money can be eaten up just traveling between cities--so it's best to choose one region and focus on the sights there. What kind of activities do you like to do? What kind of weather do you like? Are you a foodie or could you care less? That sort of stuff will determine where and how far your money goes.

If you want to to camp/hike/road trip/etc. USA is easily the best place on earth to do this. I did it for a year and loved it the amount of change in the landscape is insane. And contrary to /pol/ belief there's a lot of comfy little towns to take breaks in even if some cities are boring (especially in the west)
