Is it worthwhile to make use of these credit card promotions?

I've only ever used a debit card, but I'm 25 now and will start to need to build credit and while I was booking I saw this popup.

Is there a smart way to make use of these kinds of promotions?

Absolutely. Sign up rewards can get you most of the way to a flight and when you spend in the right spots the points really add up. My parents basically have free flights for life just by using cards. As long as you pay it off in full every month the benefits are very worth it.

yes get discounts

Capitalone venturex
>Pay $395 upfront
>Receive $750 if you spend 4k in 90 days (you can pay taxes using credit cards, and it counts as a swipe not a cash advance)
>When you renew next year you receive a $300 travel benefit to spend
>Also you can get free TSA+ & some lounge access
>Pretty decent cash back rates if redeemed for travel, and sometimes you can get 5-10x points using their portal but often times it's cheaper to use agoda than to use their portal (hotel is $30 on agoda, same hotel and room on their portal is $54 and crashes half the time)
So yeah pretty good value.

Get every credit you can that costs nothing if you don't use it. It's the secret to a good car note down the road.

And then once you grow your credit enough you buy gold and shove it up your butt and flee to southeast and use your buttgold to live off of

Yes but don’t waste time on Sky Pesos. Stick to flexible currency that can be transferred to partners ie Chase, AMEX, or Capital One points. It takes a little work to make them worth it but if you put it in you can really get value out of them. My wife and I have probably got $60k to $100k out of travel over the years.

>Receive $750
you mean $355 since you paid $395 upfront
>When you renew next year you receive a $300 travel benefit to spend
The renewal is also $395 so all they are doing is giving you back $300 in forced spending lol.
>Also you can get free TSA+ & some lounge access
worthless compared to what you have to pay early
>cash back rates
barely higher than most fee-free cards, and you have to account for the forced spending you pay in renewal fees

The best way is to look for hidden fees and gotcha's.

The best cards often have high yearly fee's to keep the account open unless you spend some enormous amounts of cash. Keep in mind that not all purchases treat payments equally, things like utilities/rent/etc can throw on 2-5% extra fee meaning you're bleeding money.

They are fine so long as you're willing to put EVERY PURCHASE on the card and pay it off in full at the end of the year. Then it also assumes you are getting the best deal on points through their market place, which is a 50/50 at best. My company allows us to spend our AMEX points as a nice gesture, but anywhere I want to use the points I am looking at mark ups that make the points near useless. If it were my personal card I'd save more money often by spending wisely vs spending points.

The best use of points is just to keep an airline status, which can be done free with mile programs, and hope for the best free upgrades.

Also these cards often have shit exchange rates compared to other types of services.

It's not a forever card. But it is one that works extremely well for traveling. If you use TSA+ it essentially is free per year so you pocket the $355, but if you don't then after three year's of having it you need to cancel it. The travel credit works just fine.
