I've heard cities like Kaohsiung in Taiwan have plenty of cheap apartments. In Malaysia I rented a large 11th floor suite for $21/night last year, nicest lodgings on my whole trip.

My Airbnb is twice that and smells bad, the kitchen sink looks like it could fall through the counter top since the counter is literally so rotten, the couch stinks and is covered with horrific stains with a shitty blanket they used to try and cover it up, there's black mold all over the sealant between tiles in the bathroom. The property I booked was the Executive Twin Suite at Greystone 99 Suites Hotel in Melaka. It is currently $14 a night on Agoda, been bookable at that price for weeks now. A few things were a little beat-up in the room, but otherwise I loved it.

You could for sure, but you'd have to find someone locally and pay up front. There's a risk that they take your money and screw you over. You'd have more options for places to rent if you went directly to the owner, but the risk would increase exponentially. Your best bet might be to stay in an Airbnb for a month and then look for a place to rent once you're settled in.

It's like renting anywhere. There are always scammers running rent scams. That's why it's better to rent through Airbnb for a while until you can find something reliable. You're much more likely to get scammed if you're desperate. I'd walk into a real estate place and ask for a recommendation. If you have a US credit card, you can always dispute a charge if someone tries to scam you.

Come on now, I've lived in nightly lodging for the past 2 1/2 months, it's been perfectly fine and comfy with lots of lovely rooms. Longest I've stayed at any property is 8 days. Unlike you bump-on-a-log expat bums, I like to move around and sample life in many different places. That's really the whole point of visiting foreign countries, to travel, y'know? Just found out about a kickass village deep in the mountains near the Thai border with van transport supposedly going there tomorrow afternoon. Croatia is more fun and the larger cities are nicer. I've never heard anyone say anything positive about Podgorica (which is where you'd fly into). There are some awesome smaller cities and towns on the coast of Croatia like Primosten where you can stay in a nice Airbnb condo on the water for $60/night.

I've always wanted to rent a boat for like 2 weeks and cruise through the bay of Kotor in Montenegro though. You can rent a giant sailboat for like $150/day. You could offset the cost with a group.
