In the next week or two, I want to spend the next 6 weeks in a SEA country to buckle down and focus on gaining competency in MMA / Muay Thai / a practical martial art.

#1 in consideration is Thailand due to the prevalence of Muay Thai.
#2 is Manila, Philippines simply because I have access to free housing there.
I’m open to Vietnam because I enjoyed my previous travels there - and will consider Taiwan and Malaysia due to having some good friends there.

My budget not including flight is $550 a week. Some considerations are cost, and authenticity/quality of gym for the selected martial art. Good quality / nutrition is a secondary consideration. The last factor is things to do outside of training - my main focus will be training but non-partying activities would be great to spice things up.I have close to no combat experience other than some slight military combatives training.

Anyone have any recommendations/stories?

I spend a lot of time split between thailand and philippines. I cut Manila out of any future considerations because it's an insanely fucked up polluted unhealthy shithole, and as a filipino you probably know that already. Manila has very few options for decent MMA training, but lots of bullshit scammers with zero experience. You might be able to find an OK boxing coach, but that's probably not what you are after. The traffic is shit so unless you live literally next door to your mma gym, enjoy having your time ruthlessly wasted by the worst city in SEA.

You should choose Thailand for MMA training. A lot of it is aimed at foreigner/beginners, and you can transition from starter classes to more advanced classes and personal coaching easily as you reach your competency and fitness level. There are world class coaches and students from everywhere teaching and being training in MMA in thailand.

$550 a week is fine. Assume you will spend $100-200 a week on high quality athletic training, or find a 'program' with a set cost and well reviewed that matches your needs.

Bangkok has everything you need. Live somewhere near the MRT lines, and you can get anywhere in the city in 30 minutes max. There is also a lot to do in Bangkok, and is overall better for 'non party' activities than other farang infested shitholes. It also has the best soapy massages outside of japan and macau, which I find a perfect way to relax. There are tons of legit really good clean thai massage available also. You can't do MMA without having some good massage for recovery, IMO. It helps a lot with the pain and mental stress from getting your ass beat.

Yeah I assumed this would be the case, Manila was very alright, nothing crazy - were it not for family I’d skip it for future travel plans.

I’m trying to get non-Thai input regarding MMA, if I do end up going that route I’ll just camp out in that thread.

It’s the /fit/ way.

Anyway I’ve determined I’m gonna go to Thailand since Manila is pretty dirty in most parts and I’ve found very little martial arts information online in Manila.

I’ve narrowed my choices to
1. Tiger Eye in BANGKOK

+ Veteran Owner and Competed in MMA.

+ Trains BJJ as well as Muay Thai.

- New, so no reviews.

- I’m not so sure I want to spend so long in the city, not a big city guy.
2. Lanna Muay Thai in CHIANG MAI

+ Across multiple discussions this places comes highly recommended

+ Brotherhood seems to be a good theme.

- Not sure if Chiang Mai is going to be active enough?
3. Sor Dejdamrong Muay Thai in PHUKET

+ in Phuket which is my desired destination due to beach.

- Gym I’m least interested in, but it’s in Phuket. I’ve heard great things about it though.
I have 5-6 weeks to train Muay Thai and it’ll be a while before I get this opportunity again. I’m a fit individual with good cardiovascular endurance (10+ miles at conversational pace no problem) and a strength base. No real martial arts training or exposure.
I’d rather stay in one place than bounce around multiple places so I can get stability of my training. I’d like to eat clean if possible (no seed oils), but not a deal breaker. Not too interested in wild partying / red light activities. I love nature and other nature activities.
Anyone have any experience with this and can help me select a destination?
