To the anon that made previous thread, I'm still around to talk Shanghai vs Taipei in a janny-approved fashion if you need.Alternatively, /china general/
>>2747534Here I am, I am inclined more and more towards Shanghai now as I've heard the city is more fun and the ccp stuff is not really something to stress too much about and supposedly the vpn works well enough to keep in touch with the west. What I would like to do is download some local dating app already before I leave and talk to some local girls there and then spend time with them when I arrive and have them show me around Shanghai and maybe other cities as well. I think that would be a cool way to get more immersed in the local culture and not just to have sex. I'd say I'm a decent looking babyfaced young white guy, do you think it would be possible to achieve that? Also I have 8 months before I go there so I have about 15-20min a day to learn the basics of mandarin and then I will take language courses there when I arrive, but is it a problem for local girls if I mainly speak just english?
Is it possible for a tourist to rent an apartment for 3mo in Taiwan??? I don't wanna use airbnb or anything like that because it's shit
going to be in honk kong for 2 nights any recomendations? Im mostly interested in architecture
>>2747635The local apps are Tantan and Momo. When I got there in 2016 they were great. I hear they are not so great now but don't have first hand experience anymore. But yea it would be easy to achieve what you're describing and most of the young people in Shanghai speak some english so thats never really a problem. They'll make an effort even if they dont. >>2747638You are stuck with airbnb or service apartments. Service apartments are quite nice but expensive, probably around 3000/mo for a 1 bedroom
>>2747681I found a service apartment studio for 5000rmb a month tho, are you sure they are that expensive? It was in Yangpu district
>>2747686Talking about Taipei. Shanghai rent is cheap and easy
>>2747686Tho unless your school is in Yangpu (very possible) you should not get an apartment there
>>2747705It is (Fudan). It's a grim area? Weird considering Fudan is supposed to be one of the top universities in Asia.
>>2747704So Taipei is basically HK and Singapore level on rent prices? That would help excluding it altogether as an option
>>2747740no absolutely not. I got a decent studio airbnb in Neihu for $750/mo electric included. $3k is a complete ripoff. I think that guy is gaslighting.
>>2747635you don't want to meet app girls. as a study abroad white guy in shanghai you are not going to be short of women to meet. just meet them irl. app girls want to practice english on their phones or scam you and you won't know which of those two or if they are real until you have invested a lot of time into it. just go out on campus or to the local student spots and meet a girl. it isn't difficult. making app friends beforehand is not the best use of your time. >>2747740taipei depends a lot on location and how shit an apartment you can accept. many expats live in terrible apartments and claim they got a good deal but they are not nice. if you are looking for just 3 months then you will pay a premium for what is essentially short-term. there are facebook groups but imo if you don't want to live in a dive or a distance away then you'd be looking at $1500 a month for one room apartment.
>>2747913I am talking about service apartment prices in downtown>>2747737No its fine and lively and if you're part of student life Im sure it would be fun. But Ive never been there after 7 years of living in Shanghai because Im not a student and otherwise have no reason to be in the area
>>2748077The average salary in Taipei is about $2500 a month, so it's obviously untrue that a typical service apartment costs $3000 a month. As a simple Google Maps search reveals, you can easily find nice rooms in the $40 price range all around Taipei.
>>2748318Are you retarded, trolling, or just too stubborn to ask/Google what a service apartment is (since you clearly don't know)
>>2747534Same anon here that made the previous thread. I am now considering strongly Shenzhen as the university's fall semester would suit better my schedule (I wouldn't have to spend christmas there like I would in Shanghai or Taipei).Any experiences on Shenzhen, apparently it's a big modern city kind of like Shanghai, but what about the nightlife and how well do I get by with english? Also what about the cost of living, surely it's cheaper than HK but is it more expensive than Shanghai? Could I achieve there my goal of finding a girl/girls from apps and irl to spend time with and have them show me around? I think I could reach HSK 1 or 2 before I'd arrive there
>>2748431It is a big modern city but it's a huge sprawl, almost American levels of everything being far away from each other (of course, at least with Shenzhen you have functional public transpo). I don't particularly like it compared to Shanghai because of this, but it otherwise checks all your boxes, except maybe English which will be worse than Shanghai>plenty of nightlife>similar COL to Shanghai if not a bit cheaper>plenty of women (this box is checked in literally every Chinese city, don't worry)Easy access to HK & Guangzhou is a plus for short trips. Weather is better than Shanghai assuming you like heat.
>>2748433Are there many foreigners, I'd assume a lot less in comparison to Shanghai but will it often feel like I'm the only white man in the city? Which could be a cool experience tho
>>2748435Depends what part of the city you're in but most likely no. You'll see other whites around. Shekou is main expat area but I imagine if you're at school there are plenty there, too. However getting that experience is only a day trip away to literally any T2-T3 city nearby
>>2748431pretty retarded to skip on Shanghai because you can't be bothered to spend one Christmas away
>>2748495I agree but I don't like the idea of doing it to my family as we celebrate it with small company (just the family), I just feel it would be very selfish thing to do even tho they would let me do it
>>2748736you need to start living your own life at some point buddy
