Here I am, I am inclined more and more towards Shanghai now as I've heard the city is more fun and the ccp stuff is not really something to stress too much about and supposedly the vpn works well enough to keep in touch with the west.

What I would like to do is download some local dating app already before I leave and talk to some local girls there and then spend time with them when I arrive and have them show me around Shanghai and maybe other cities as well. I think that would be a cool way to get more immersed in the local culture and not just to have sex. I'd say I'm a decent looking babyfaced young white guy, do you think it would be possible to achieve that? Also I have 8 months before I go there so I have about 15-20min a day to learn the basics of mandarin and then I will take language courses there when I arrive, but is it a problem for local girls if I mainly speak just english?

The local apps are Tantan and Momo. When I got there in 2016 they were great. I hear they are not so great now but don't have first hand experience anymore. But yea it would be easy to achieve what you're describing and most of the young people in Shanghai speak some english so thats never really a problem. They'll make an effort even if they dont.

just go out on campus or to the local student spots and meet a girl. it isn't difficult. making app friends beforehand is not the best use of your time.

taipei depends a lot on location and how shit an apartment you can accept. many expats live in terrible apartments and claim they got a good deal but they are not nice.
if you are looking for just 3 months then you will pay a premium for what is essentially short-term. there are facebook groups but imo if you don't want to live in a dive or a distance away then you'd be looking at $1500 a month for one room apartment.

The average salary in Taipei is about $2500 a month, so it's obviously untrue that a typical service apartment costs $3000 a month. As a simple Google Maps search reveals, you can easily find nice rooms in the $40 price range all around Taipei.

Same anon here that made the previous thread. I am now considering strongly Shenzhen as the university's fall semester would suit better my schedule (I wouldn't have to spend christmas there like I would in Shanghai or Taipei).

Any experiences on Shenzhen, apparently it's a big modern city kind of like Shanghai, but what about the nightlife and how well do I get by with english? Also what about the cost of living, surely it's cheaper than HK but is it more expensive than Shanghai? Could I achieve there my goal of finding a girl/girls from apps and irl to spend time with and have them show me around? I think I could reach HSK 1 or 2 before I'd arrive there

It is a big modern city but it's a huge sprawl, almost American levels of everything being far away from each other (of course, at least with Shenzhen you have functional public transpo). I don't particularly like it compared to Shanghai because of this, but it otherwise checks all your boxes, except maybe English which will be worse than Shanghai

Depends what part of the city you're in but most likely no. You'll see other whites around. Shekou is main expat area but I imagine if you're at school there are plenty there, too. However getting that experience is only a day trip away to literally any T2-T3 city nearby
