Since JR has adjusted the prices for the pass, not really worth it anymore, unless you want to travel by train very extensively. You can plug in your itinerary in the links below and compare prices to the JR Pass.

I'm thinking about visiting Hokkaido for a week in February. Would Sapporo be worth visiting as my first time in Japan or is there nothing to do? I want cold weather but would it be too cold? I am looking at not spending too much money so I really do not want to visit Tokyo for that reason.

I'm going in 4 days as well. Haven't been in fall yet so I will definitely try a tsukimi burger at makkudonarudo. What you should eat depends on what you like, or rather what you don't like, that usually makes it easier. I've yet to have a bad experience at a restaurant so just try anywhere. I like set meals and rice bowls so these places are good:
Men's Dinner, Women's Lunch Kitchen
キッチン 男の晩ごはん女の昼ごはん near Ekoda station

I'm such a bitch in a lot of ways. I find it hard to push myself to leave my place and go eat because I don't want to intrude or be a nuisance since I've seen all the stuff about foreigners. plus not being able to speak the language. I'm sitting here hungry because I don't want to go to 7-11 anymore but I just feel so awkward walking into sit down establishments. holy F what is wrong with me... Eh, Japan is ultra easymode for this. Don't need a work of Japanese to shop at a conbini. Restaurants are very accommodating to solo diners and english menus are plentiful. I spent a month in central Europe earlier this year and I went from 76kg to 65, all because I was too anxious to go out and eat to I basically survived on supermarket bread. Early in my trip I had a bad experience in Switzerland where I didn't know how restaurants work (apparently you're just meant to walk in a sit down somwhere, I stood around waiting for someone to seat me and was ignored for 10 min). The staff were rude and the food was expensive and shit. Japan is paradise in comparison.

Just go to a ramen, udon, beef bowl, curry etc. place, the locals eat out solo all the time. Sumimasen goes really far. Most places nowadays have iPads or similar electronic ordering for linguistically impaired people.
Order in from Wolt or uber eats. Some hotels have partnership pizza places and you can catch a deal from them.
I just want to emphasize that you're quite literally in the country of the socially accepted busy solo diner, salarymen, otakus etc hit quick meal restaurants alone all the time

Whenever you find yourself thinking "I'm in Japan and I want to do XYZ, but is it OK? Would people be annoyed?" just imagine an Indian doing that very same thing in front of you and how you would feel in that situation.

Got a new upstairs neighbor in my マンション, could hear them moving in all day yesterday. Didn't manage to get a look at them when I went out to do my grocery shopping. But I think it's a woman.

The last time I had neighbors move in they came to introduce themselves and actually came to my door on two occasions to bring me a gift (I wasn't home the first time). Ironically it was the most Yakuza-looking couple you could imagine, skinny chinpira-looking guy with an almost comically thick, perfectly styled flat top and covered in Japanese-style tattoos, his wife looked like she'd recently retired from being a lifelong gyaru and was now transitioning into a new style. Really nice people though, and quiet as mice. They only stayed for one year.

This one hasn't done that. Quite rude desu. Japan has fallen.

Headed back to Japan on Thursday. Sunday is when I begin my great Shikoku roadtrip. I'm admittedly more nervous this go around. My life is a bit chaotic right now so this trip is pretty inconvenient time wise. However I'm happy to get some peace and quiet.

has a reputation as a dangerous city. as in, it had the most violent crime per capita of any city in japan for several years up until recently. they're trying to clean up the image tho.

i've been there twice, for a random non-prefectural capital city it's surprisingly big. the local specialty is yaki curry - curry served in a clay bowl and finished with a layer of cheese and a few minutes under the broiler so the cheese layer can get nice and gooey. really good. there's a cozy waterfront area with western style buildings and a really big museum that i didn't go into, also apparently famous for having a nice view of the city from the local mountains (again, didn't go to see personally, but my friend has gone and he corroborates this)

i never got a chance to go to the nightlife district outside of daylight hours so i can't comment on any of that stuff but it seemed pretty standard

tons of koreans and chinese as well. when i went the second time my friend and i sat down at a pretty busy yaki curry restaurant and two koreans in business suits sat next to us, they proceeded to immediately spill a jar of pickled stuff and instead of calling the staff or trying to clean it up they just got up and moved to another seat. couldn't believe what i was seeing

Go to any 5 star hotel, do the secret samurai bow and then talk in the very polite form like "taihen kashikomarimashita, fukaku kansha moushiagemasu" instead of "arigatou goazimasu", then retire while still facing them and bowing two more times while going to your room.
>>
>>2830477
There are no "tips" and tricks when it comes to accommodation in a large, popular, and touristy city. Go to an aggregate site, go directly to the hotel's website, call the hotel, compare prices.
That's what jews would like you to think, but there are two secret ways to get the prices reduced, the first one has already been posted by >>2830495
I'll share the second and arguably easier option which can be done at home
>open private tab
>search for a hotel 1 week before your planned stay
>close private private tab
>repeat 69 times
>now do a back flip exactly 21 times
>but on every 3rd back flip, do a cartwheel
Viola your hotel and flights are now 99% cheaper. Don't dismiss this trick unless you've already tried it.
>>
>>2830497
>>but on every 3rd back flip, do a cartwheel
It's the hardest part, you have 50% chances killing yourself, but it's worth it.

Landing in Tokyo Haneda almost made me sick. Hordes of ameriblobs and hispandex creatures in line for immigration, reminded me of Disney World with how the line looked. Was really nice whiplash once I transferred to the domestic terminal and they immediately vanished. Is it really that bad now where every major destination has become a foreigner-occupied zoo? Kyoto seemed like a nice place to visit once, but now I get the impression that everyone is there to see things and so the thing itself is no longer worth seeing thanks to crowds.

Was in Japan for six months from November 2024 to May 2025 and I'm already planning another month from March 2026 to April. I was hoping that those six months would have made me fulfilled about Japan but they didn't.

I miss the food. I miss the cheap booze. I miss Tokyo and the excellent trains. I miss going to random bars and having Japanese dudes practice their English at me. Fuck I hate the UK

We aren't rich. The country is genuinely sinking. I just work minimum wage jobs (£1600/month) and it's enough to save (I live at my parents) so I can keep going to Japan.

Going for 2 weeks starting the 18th. Could just be algorithm slop but how much has tokyo changed when it comes to very basic Japanese with tourists? Get a Wise account and open a currency account in yen, transfer money to it then withdraw on the debit card. + a travel credit card that advertises the best rates (barclaycard for example)

>what did you do for 6 months in japan?
Got drunk almost daily in Tokyo. Went to foreigner friendly Soaplands in Kabukicho and got my weener sucked. Met foreigners in bars and Japanese salarymen who wanted to practice their English. Travelled to different cities (Nagoya, Osaka, Fukuoka, Okinawa, Kanazawa and loads of others. Basically, I had the best time of my life. Tokyo is insane for nightlife and shit. One of my favourite things to do was just get drunk as fuck doing karaoke, then going to the batting cages to smash some balls. Rented a car and motorcycle a few times as well. Rode around Unzen-Amakusa National Park in Kyushu. Was insane.

I met probably over 100 people while I was there. Went on two dates with Japanese girls but my Nihongo is really basic, (sumimasen, nama biru hitotsu onegaishemasu) level
>isn't accommodation very expensive there?
In Tokyo? Yeah but it depends where you stay. I had multiple stints in different Airbnbs. The ones close to everything were expensive, like £1000/month for Ikebukero. Some that were further away were cheaper. Like Kinshicho in Sumida was £800/month. Overall, I spent about £12,000 during the six months I was there. I can't wait to go back desu.

I miss the food the most. When I went to Fukuoka and tasted the hakata ramen, it was hard to go back to Tokyo's meh ramen places. Then I found a really good hakata ramen place in Yokohoma. 2 ramen refills kaedama as well. I went to that place pretty much daily.

With the increasing rate of tourists coming in I am wondering if it will even be cheaper this winter?

January 2024 - 2.67 million
April 2024- 3.0 million
January 2025 - 3.7 million
April 2025 3.9

It must be that theres less Japanese traveling in the winter that drives the market down? Correct?

I'm autistic as fuck mate. Being in Tokyo though, I was free to do whatever I wanted. Felt kinda liberating desu. Getting drunk also helps loosen up. If I went to Torikizoku with 6 random travellers, it'd be a bit awkward at first but once everyone had like 3 birus they all chatty as fuck. Then we'd play darts afterwards or some shit.

>Whats your life like now? Back to work?
It's the complete opposite. My apartment is kinda rural, so I really only leave it go to work and get groceries. It's pretty isolating compared to living in the centre of Tokyo. I mostly just play video games and go to work. Minimum wage office admin job. I plan to quit this one in March ready for another month or two in Japan. My career is pretty much fucked. I don't recommend this lifestyle lol.

as an amerishart, I still do not understand the bidet toilet. I'm not denying it's the best way to clean your ass but hear me out with the following. I also want to disclaim that I am fit and not fat.

okay, I just took a shit. I press the button and get a little jump scare when the water jets onto my asshole. cool, I let it do it's thing. now, I have essentially poopy water that is splashed around my entire ass with water also streaming down my cheeks. I now have to use even more toilet paper than I normally would to wipe everything down. yes I feel extra clean asshole-wise but now I leave feeling like I have poopy watery butt residue. Kek, I had a similar experience in Osaka. Saw a girl standing by herself near Shinsekai, in that walking street that runs alongside Tobita that's packed with snack and karaoke bars. Assumed she was either a hooker or a tout of some kind and wanted to practice my Japanese a little, opened her and she replied in either Chinese or Vietnamese, I couldn't tell which. Walking through Shinsekai, Dotonbori, Shinsaibashi, Denden Town, etc. all I heard were Mandarin and Hangul and the occasional English.

Not really the business men still travel the temperatures from Tokyo to Kagoshima usually stay above 15°c at day so you get a chill autumn day most of the days.

When new years hits there massive traveling back to family in the rural areas so all the trains and stuff are booked the fuck out. But since it's usually family trips the hotels aren't as hammered, but a lot of people use it to go skying so stuff like Yamagata, Yuzawa, Matsumoto, Myoko etc are full.

>I'm in Japan early March
I'll be there from 7th March onwards until mid April probably. We can go to some secret izakayas. The more hidden the place, the cheaper the booze. I was getting pints of Kirin for barely $1 in some places. You just need a bit of Nihongo. People here hate Tokyo but it's unironically great. So much to do. Osaka is shit and dirty. Fukuoka is the second best city in Japan. Maybe Kobe third. Nagasaki was pretty based but felt really old at times.

>>2830933
>what did you pay?
I rented a ZX400-R 4-cylinder 80bhp for 10 days and it was $900. I used 819 Rental. Just upload your passport, driving licence and International driving permit.
>did you take you own gear or rent it?
They give you a helmet and gloves. The rest you don't need. I rode in jeans and a hoodie. Speed limits are very slow in Japan, you probably won't crash or need gear. Some long stretches of empty roads are like 40 km/h for no good reason, other than fuck you I guess. I pretty much did double the speed limit most of the time. Japanese people also speed everywhere cause they know the speed limits are ass.

Just make sure you bring a phone holder for GPS. I bought one off JP Amazon while I was there and had it delivered to a Family Mart. I would've 100% got lost without it.

just want to let everyone know that I may have made a big mistake. I signed up for language school as I wanted to take a break from my career (31, was working in accounting) and have a good amount of savings. arrived here, really enjoy the city and apartment, but after having my first day at class, I have instantly regretted my decision. I pictured class in japan as a very orderly and quiet class with some white weebs and rich asians. in reality my assigned class is 90% jeets who are talking NON STOP all class. if the teacher asks me a question, I don't even have time to think about it. I have ranjeet next to me yelling the answer along with the other 89% of the class. I'm unironically mortified at what I have signed up for and seriously contemplating leaving after just one day

I'm going to talk with the school and ask if they can move me up to a higher class as I heard it's quieter than the lower level classes. I absolutely detest indians/pakis/anything brown asian and I'm literally surrounded by it for 4.5 hours a day. I'm writing this also as a form of cope for my decision and hoping I can figure this shit out

God help me

Are you there to move permanently? If so, I would think the best solution is to use it as motivation to study in your own time and finish up as fast as possible. Yeah, under 5 to 10 years of learning everyday or living there, you'll just be the dumb gaijin who doesn't talk quite right anyways.

My goal is not to work there but just to get-by and to share ideas/emotions simply, so i learned the base but memorized the strict minimum, and then i change methods everyday (learning from songs, do one topic course with chatgpt, audio google translate to check my accent, then i'll switch to hellotalk or italki in the last months).

Trust me, the tension is real. Fuck the taxi drivers in this city. Xenophobic pricks. And fuck the bus drivers who run the guided to tours. I'm only weeks into my first visit to Japan, and I have found Japanese hospitality and its hype to be grossly overrated.

Usually whores are quick to put a condom on or at least keep it visible. If they don't I just go with the flow and ask if it's alright and at that point they usually say it's okay. It's pretty clear from your chemistry with someone if they'll be okay with it. I have no regrets and I'm honestly split over whether I should see the Sendai girl again because that was one of the best fucks ever and ridiculously enthusiastic. I messaged her about getting tested but she ghosted me so I think I have to cut my losses since I don't want to get reinfected or she might just not want to see me. The Tokyo girl got tested and cured at least.

Considering Japan monetized reporting of illegal immigrants and foreigners who work while on temp visas probably. Maybe not a dedicated team, but the older xenophobic generation will probably report you. I don't know why you would be dumb enough to do remote work in public while in Japan though.

they should make a soap for gajin only staffed by gaijin only women
>>
>>2831310
I think to a certain degree they do. When I went to the soap in Sapporo they didn't give me a choice, they just gave me the picture to one girl and asked if that was okay. I knew the variety of other girls that place had from city heaven so they were full of shit but I was leaving the next day and didn't feel like shopping around so I just went with it. She's probably the go-to gaijin fucker. Tightest pussy I've ever experienced though.
>>
>>2831313
A lot of it is up to the girl herself, I think. I've actually asked quite a few of them and for the most part they said the store doesn't care either way, some of them just don't feel comfortable being alone with a foreigner in a situation where a decent bit of money is involved and miscommunication can very easily occur.

I've also talked to one tencho that said that if I wanted to set up a 3P I could choose any two girls from the panel as with two of them there they'd feel much more comfortable than a 1 on 1 situation.

Unironically it does feel like that sometimes. I was in a bar in Shibuya speaking to this Australian dude. My next door boomer neighbours recently want to Japan as well. And they didn#t really have an interest in it. But to be fair, lots of people in the mid 2000s went to Japan with zero interest in it. If some random Japanese person finds you annoying for some reason you won't even know about it.

You can complain about jeets all you want, but there's nothing more unsettling than driving down the street and seeing a blob of hijabs ambling down the sidewalk, each with 3-4 kids in tow. Takaichi needs to crack down on these Abrahamists, or else Japan is truly over.

You guys got any recommendations for Nagoya? I already have booked tickets to Legoland and Ghibli Park and a one day tour to Gujo, Takayama and Shirakawa-go.
Toyota commemorative museum seems worth visiting too
>>
Any recs for places that aren’t insanely touristy? Probably still gonna visit Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka just to experience a lot of the famous spots that I can’t contrarian myself out of but I wanna at least squeeze in a few days in places that not everyone goes to and make the trip my own in a way so some places I can plan around Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka would be appreciated. Probably gonna be in Japan for 2 weeks
>>
>>2831782
>Toyota commemorative
The one about Toyota's history? I went, it was good. Though the cars and shit are just the 2nd half, first half is looms and thread.
If you meant the broadere automotive history museum ran by Toyota I guess it's cool too, but I didn't have time to see it last year because of the stupid public holidays and shit.
There's a train museum in one of the harbors.
Takayama is great as a 1 night trip of it's own. Shirakawa too, if you want to stay in one of the 500 year old reed roof houses, otherwise it's a daytrip location
>>
>>2831784
>Any recs for places that aren’t insanely touristy?
These days anything REALLY worth doing is sadly for you very saturated by foreign and domestic tourists.
If you can however find anything of value for yourself in, say, Akiruno, Sakai or Nara (not the famous park but the rest of the city) the world may be your oyster
>>
>>2831782
Nagoya castle is a must. Shinkansen museum is close to legoland too

I'm so glad I did this generic 2 week trip in 2016 before tourists completely overran everything. I had a sweet little airbnb in kyoto right next to the inari shrine. There was nothing but locals after 5PM and I could explore the shrine all by myself in the morning. Even back then though the buses were claustrophobic and crammed full of chinks. I can't imagine the hell kyoto is now.
>>
>>2831811
I feel bad for the Japanese, who suffer the consequences of the weak yen and over-tourism. Travelling domestically and abroad are both pretty much inaccessible. No wonder they elected the new PM.
>>
I'm planning to travel in random directions in December and may need to book hotels either day before or day of. How are hotel prices / availability early in December? I know it gets a bit packed closer to Christmas / New Years but I won't be staying long enough for either of them. I don't plan stay in Tokyo.
>>
is 20 gigs good for an esim for 2 weeks in japan?

Japanese citizens don't have any say in the PM election, it's the deputies who do.

Depends on your usage. I bought a 20gb plan for a 3 week trip and used my phone mainly for navigation and discord. Hotel wifi when not out and about. In the end I only ended up using under 7gb.

I'm well traveled in Japan, here are a few suggestions:

Nara: This rural city is not far from Kyoto and features stunning Heian arcjitecture. But the most fascinating part is the deer population; the red shika deer that reside in the city walk around freely, and are sustained on gifts of food from the locals. Nara perfectly captures the Old Japan, when people lived in harmony with nature.

Hakone: If hiking is your thing, look no further than Hakone, located about 90 minutes by train from Shinjuku-eki station in Tokyo. The locals believe climbing this dormant volcano will prolong their lives, and honestly, after doing it myself, I believe so too! Afterwards you can soak in traditional hot springs and enjoy sake with the locals, but for the love of god, do NOT bring your towel with you into the water!

Golden Gai: For nightlife lovers looking for something a bit different, Golden Gai is the place to be. GG is a neighborhood in the Kabukicho theater district, riddled with hundreds of tiny bars, all run by, and frequented by, locals. Pick a place and dive in--they are very welcoming, but be prepared to use every bit of Japanese you know if you want to truly be immersed in the experience!
>>
>>2831784

>by the time borders open after covid ALL new students are jeets, pakis, nepalese, etc
>the handfull of white weebs seem more miserable than the last batches
>rich chinese all call daddy and fuck off to greener pastures like singapore or australia
>they're just using the school for visas so they can work
>school is seemingly fine with this and getting kickbacks for getting them jobs
>class becomes endless jeet-chatter, they all cheat on their tests and fail JLPT, pass school and get certs anyway, talk on sailfoams

shit was really blackpilling. and now they're expanding the low-skill jeet visa and closing the business visa(because too many white weebs and chinese were using it kek)

japan will become a jeet outpost and they're fine with it because they think it will epically own the chinese, who rightfully hate jeets.

if you want "big city, no tourists" vibes, you pretty much can't beat Nagoya. massive place full of Japanese people going about their lives. when I went there I think I was the only foreigner at the station, not exaggerating. to a lesser degree Yokohama is similar to this, as long as you avoid the area near the ameriburger navy base or whatever they have there. just a giant fuckin city full of Japanese folks.

as others have mentioned, Tohoku is not on many international tourists' radars. I did an 11 day road trip through there. definitely some cool stuff to see but i would never go there without a car.

shikoku is also quite low key and pleasantly eclectic. the things you see there are more of the, "huh, this kind of shit would only exist in japan" variety.

I say gochisosama if it's a small place where the staff are right in front of you. Because it's polite. It seems to work since they usually nod at me or just say arigato gosimastita

But if it's a pretty busy place with lots of people coming in and out, I don't think it's worth it, I guess cause it's more of a basic place. i feel utterly trapped in Osaka. Fuck public transit. I don't care how ubiquitous, cheap or efficient it is, trains, subways, and taxis will never beat a good old personal vehicle. No, unlike the countrymen I left behind, my idea of fun involves something other than food and booze or driving to establishments that serve either at regular intervals because I'm not a fat fuck whose only idea of having fun is stuffing his gullet. And considering the only things surrounding the immediate vicinity of my apartment are:
1. Other apartments
2. Hotels
3. Supermarkets
4. Convenience stores
I reckon I will need a bit more to keep myself sane in this city. And considering that my main passions lie in martial arts and trail running, two hobbies that are quite intensive and demanding when it comes to physical output, I would say I have my work cut out for me. This isn't even mentioning that the latter requires an actual dirt trail, the likes of which involve such things like "nature" and "parks" or "mountainous regions" or even "forests," all of which a metropolis like Osaka desperately, SORELY lacks. Hence my fucking question, thunder cunt.

It seems like there are solutions to your problem, but you’re seemingly too stubborn to do the necessary-if-personally-unpleasant things to reach those solutions. That’s mentally-ill behaviour, but what’s really crazy is that you also expect us to be sympathetic; your problems are your problems, and they manifestly have more to do with your shitty attitude than with Osaka. I have literally rode every line of the Tokyo metro hundreds of times and train / shinkansen lines spanning both ends of the country dozens of times. Sure, if this is your first or second or even 5th time going to Japan, feel free to stare at the black void of the windows while you're underground all you want while I, and basically everyone else on the train who isn't pretending to be asleep, will spend out time on our equally advanced and sophisticated phones doing whatever the fuck we want while we wait to get from point A to point B. Instead of being present in modes of transportation that discourages making noise, perhaps allocate your efforts in being present in situations that can foster new relationships and experiences.

>So you added each other on Discord of all things, instead of, say, Line?
Yes because we play games together and that's what it's mainly built for. I do have their Line and even some of their person cell phone numbers, but our discord chats have more history.

There’s lots of paid parking and it’s not so bad if you have a Kei car. You might struggle some places if you’re driving a full-size tho. No shortage of scam lots, either - just like with bars, restaurants and the like, don’t park anywhere that doesn’t have the rates clearly posted, or is nearly empty during busy times. I made that mistake my first few months here and paid like 5000 yen for 2 hours of parking.

There's your problem bud. It's a shit city. I was bored as fuck there as well. Tokyo and Fukuoka are more fun. Tokyo just has way more stuff to do and it's cleaner. There's zero reason to go to Osaka other than seeing the sights. Tokyo is just a better city in general.

I walked by a scientology place in Tokyo. Didn't even know they were chilling out there. It was late at night but the place had all the lights on and it looked like a barnes and nobles on the inside.

I once came across a Happy Science book that was basically a transcript of the founder's "interview" with the ghost of John Lennon, covering topics such as who he would have voted for the in 2012 election (Mitt Romney) and why the Chinese government is bad (it represses individual freedom)

Not really, but Americans are by far the most common travelers from 'the west' - 17.6% westerners (discounting the 0.5% from the middle east), of which 7.9% are from the USA (second is Australians at 2.6%).

The onion kitchen in Awaji was so goofy. Love these japs man.

2 days into my Shikoku roadtrip. So far so good. Although the amount of shiroi baka gaijin I've seen is disappointing. Same with chinks. Hopefully as I get further into the island there are less

Just these 2 since I immediately remembered I had to pass through Canada on my way back after buying them (will not make this mistake again). Opted to bring them in the carry on which made my anus clench during the security scan but books just look like books on an xray and the only other stuff inside were the clothes I wrapped them in so they didn't check.

Where are you seeing baka gaijin in Shikoku? When I went it was pretty rare outside of Takamatsu.

How long minimum to spend in Japan? I have unlimited time (well, within regulations) but not unlimited money. I was thinking about 3.5 weeks before I realised I could do that with a job even if I would burn up quite a bunch of vacation time. I'm trying to stretch it to 30 days or more also because I'm realising it could end up feeling rushed, but money will be tight. I'll probably end up with a bit more than 1M ¥ to spend on everything by the time I go (not counting the flight), but that would pretty much empty my bank account and I would rather not go that deep.
In general I'd probably want to start out in Kansai, maybe go on a quick stretch to Hiroshima/Miyajima, and otherwise head from Ise up through Gifu to Kanazawa, to mostly cut East to Nikko, then heading down South on the outside of Tokyo to Hakone/Mt. Fuji finally into Tokyo proper which is around where I'd spend the rest. I actually just remembered I drew up a shitty itinerary for a friend but noticed I didn't take Matsumoto into account so maybe there's a curve there (and small curves for cool shit along the way, taking recs to make the most of the in-between part).

First trip by the way (and I don't think I'm making it back anytime soon so every bit of minmaxing counts).
I might have gotten too detailed so to get to the point/

tl;dr
How long can you stretch 1M Yen for while having an alright time?

I was planning a Shikoku road trip earlier this year but waited too long to start booking shit and eventually cancelled it cause some other stuff came up. Keep us posted, I might try again in December.

Heard too much about it not to go. I'm a casual and it wasn't in my first plan from a few days ago, first instinct was just go quickly along the coast to Tokyo stopping at Fuji. I was actually going to post earlier how I should fit Kanazawa in and go about bridging the mid-section (not keen on going into Tokyo then out again to Fuji), but I figured I might be okayish with this, gives me an excuse to move a bit more across the countryside though I still have to sharpen details, but it's all a question of time/money.
If I can make exploring that part worthwhile it might be cool and it still sort of moves me along.
I'm honestly more on the fence about Hiroshima/Miyajima since it's really just back and forth (unless there is a better way to path my way back).
But again I'm not too good at this and jumped from having this as a goal far on the horizon to "oh shit it can happen and I need to start planning now" very fast so any tips/shitting on my plans is welcome. Honestly as long as I get a reasonable balance of pretty stuff, history, nature, fun and some time to just vibe in Tokyo at the end I could be fine with it. Although even if I know the nature and going to hidden lesser known shit is part of the charm I don't see myself wanting to linger there too crazy amounts of time, maybe a cheeky ryokan somewhere but otherwise yeah.

Will do. I'm unfortunately not hitting the more inner Mt. Tsurugi hiking bits but pretty much doing a whole loop of the island.

easily the highlight of my shikoku journey though the driving is intense on those one lane mountain roads.

Just some general advice, i cant provide any help for budgeting or time. My 2 stays have only been 10 days and 2 weeks.

If you're going to spend a month there and travel like your map, i might suggest hiring a car. Never done it myself, but ive always stayed near transport hotspots, unlike your map
Kobe and himeji can be daytrips from osaka. Especially kobe, thats only good for food really.
What's going on in matsusaka you want to go there? Wouldnt reccomend staying in nagoya.
And im not reading your paragraph on kanazawa, but yeah go there anon. I went to onomichi for 2 nights, about the same size, and that was great.
What month are you planning to visit? Makes a HUGE difference in enjoyability.
>>
>>2832840
It's a fine plan. It's similar to my first 4 week trip to Japan.
Note that you basically have to go to Tokyo to get to Nikko.

I was (am?) enrolled into soka gakkai.
I was told by a stranger on shinjuku I won a free tour to a buddhist celebration along with other guys as part of a “japanese culture experience“ “sponsored by the government“. I knew it was fishy but I didn't care because it was free and I was curious so I decided to follow them. We entered an old building with even more clueless foreigners so that made me feel more secure and decided to stay.
Then they got us into a traditional japanese tatami room with a golden statue in the center. The “guide“ told us to just repeat the chants along their leader and so we did. It was like half an hour of singing 南妙法蓮華経 (I googled it later) after some other verses until the inciense in the golden statue burned out. Then their leader said we were successfully registered as new members and showed us some weird documents that looked very legit with our names written on them.

that's how they keep their numbers up and growing so be careful

Cannot wait. Anyone in Tokyo fancy a pint on Sunday?

That's just a very rough and tentative sketch and I'm not stopping at every point in the line, I don't have any plans for Matsusaka just figured I might want to check out Ise for the shrine if anything. Also yeah just passing through Nagoya (though I heard there might be interesting stuff in Gifu). I haven't actually planned out too much how to go through the middle of nowhere yet, just figured it might be cool.
>What month
A-April... (well arriving in late March) I'm making sure to fuck off before GW though since from what I've read it seems to make things much worse.

>>2832980
Oh so heading from the outside into Nikko doesn't work anyway? I figured it might save me a trip out of Tokyo.
>>
>>2833003
I'm going in april too, but i'm with 2 others so splitting from them to meet a random anon might be difficult. Plus if you start in osaka and we end there, we wont meet.
March, april and may are the best months to go.

Honestly starting and ending in Osaka might be a bit cheaper for me, but convenience aside I feel like leaving Tokyo "for good" while still staying in Japan could feel painful.
Also thanks anon but I'm kind of a massive sperg anyway. Have a good time with your friends, I might have gone with two as well but in the end it's only me, gonna make the absolute most of it though.
