Going back to Saigon in jan to visit my fiancé. What's neat to visit around D1 for day trips? Last time we just kind of farted around the downtown area and then hit the war museum which was lame.
>>
>>2843080
Saigon isn't the city for day trips. Take her to Cần Giờ, closest thing we've got. You can rent a boat together and paddle through the mangroves, have lunch in Cần Thạnh. Bring mosquito spray.

If she likes clubbing take her to Kasho.

theres nothing in saigon that you wont find elsewhere. after many visits i find it soulless, just like the major city i live in back home. go to the war museums and have unique personal experiences in the smaller cafes/restaurants that you stumble upon yourself that you didnt look up on tiktok or based on onlin reviews

Going to Vietnam for the first time soon, doing the standard motorcycle ride from Saigon to Hanoi. Anyone know how often im likely to be stopped by police? Assuming i dont ride like a retard and draw attention to myself. Ive got plenty of experience, but no license. I dont mind paying bribes, just dont want to have to deal with the bike being confiscated for a few days. Im aware there'll probably be checkpoints at Mui Ne and the Ha Giang Loop
>>
>>2843779
This is the worst year to be riding without a license. There's a new secretary general doing a major corruption crackdown, so police in most provinces will not take your bribe money. I think you're playing with fire.

International driver's licenses are valid here. I recommend you convert your local license for that class of vehicle to an international one.
>>
>>2843809
>police in most provinces will not take your bribe money
lol...lmao
>>
>>2843779
There will 100% be checkpoints in Hà Giang but you only have to pay the bribe once. Guess they have a Zalo or WhatsApp group because other police will know about, and honor, the first bribe. I was there in September.
>>
>>2843809
>>2843872
>>2843898
Thanks for the insight boys, how much do you bribe here? Changes quite a lot for each country, maybe ill just double the standard bribe to be safe
>>
>>2844014
In Hà Giang it's a lot more than it should be. The guy I rented my bike from took care of it for me for 2 million, told me the police would ask me for 3 million. I kinda thought he was full of shit but his ratings online were good so I just went with it. Sure enough, the cops were exactly where he said they'd be and several other foreigners told me they had to pay 3 mil. Fuckin bastards, but I wouldn't let it stop you from doing it. It's worth it.

What are some good places to live in Vietnam that aren't major cities and are relatively un-westernized?

I like your attitude anon. If you really want to live here then please continue learning the language and culture. It requires sacrifice at first but will pay off in the end. Here's what I did:
1) Get a small town teaching job. Pick a town where the English level is so low that people prefer your baby talk Vietnamese. No this will not pay well. You're learning a poverty language. Be poor.
2) Commit to language immersion. Use English only at work. Politely disengage with anyone who speaks English to you. Never date or make friends with an English speaker. Your only contacts should be people who don't know the language at all. If someone says 'Don't worry I'll help you practice your Vietnamese,' and they just said that in English, they are already using you for free lessons. You have to be a real psychopath about it. Any English past hello should be a deal breaker.
3) Take a few phonics lessons from a local schoolteacher. Use the textbooks their grade 1 students use. De Rhode's alphabet is phonetic and crucial to learning the language. Get to the point where you can read sentences aloud with perfect pronunciation.
4) Use your phonics skills to passively learn vocabulary from street signs and menus. Text message friends/girls in full diacritics. Repeat thise conversations and situations verbally until you're almost as good at speaking and listening as reading and writing. This is the gameplay loop you'll spend most of your time on.
5) Once you achieve real person status in that small town, move to a big city for a better job. You'll be tempted to stay but you can't, trust me. People there were with you all through your baby years and will never really respect you. Always be cool to them but don't make any commitments, especially to girls.

Always keep trying no matter how difficult it is and how much people sneer and talk down to you. It will pay off. I'm now quite wealthy and happy in life due to toughing it out early on.

Lol, what? Only in the north. Giọng miền Nam/Trung/Tây are definitely not phonetic (or at least, not any moreso than English is). I suppose most foreigners learn "standard" Northern Vietnamese but if you ended up having to live in the South you'd be in deep shit.
>>
>>2844386
Thanks bro but I'm probably a bit ahead of you here. I'm still shit face to face but I'm actually quite a good texter at this point. This language would be easy as shit if the sounds weren't so fucked up. Even though I understand how the sounds work, my ear hasn't learned to catch them (again, unless they slow down for me)
>>
>>2844450
Keep at it man. How long have you been here?
>>
>>2844491
I'll def keep at it. I've been here a couple years but not fully immersed like we're talking about.

Why move back to the big city at this point btw? I'm not sure I understand why you're saying I shouldn't stay in the small town but even if we go with that, why the big cities and not another small town? The big modern globalized cities are what I'd prefer to distance myself from.

I did 4 days on the Hi Giang like a month ago, I had an international bike license but my mate did not. So we booked a tour which allowed us to pay an extra 50aud (30ish usd) and they wrote us a bribe note kek.

Also as an Australian apparently our international license isn't valid in Vietnam weirdly enough even though I have an actual motorbike license. Anyway in Hi Giang got pulled over 3 times in a span of 20 minutes, then didn't get pulled over until the last day (back in Hi Giang) You can ride a 50cc but it would be way too slow for your journey

>>2848139
I'm not him, but I'm neither of these things and I hate planning in advance. Too stressful. I go on vacation to relax and figure out what I want to do as I go. I might have general ideas but that's it.
>>
>>2848139
Why do you need to plan? Figure out where you're going next the night before you leave your current location. If hotels are plentiful enough you don't even need to make an advance reservation. Sometimes you show up at the bus terminal and pick a bus to a place you haven't heard of before, but that looks cool on the map. Freedom is the whole point of travel, not imprisoning yourself with a to-do list itinerary like you were back at work.

Vietnam Military History Museum is great if you are interested in the long military history, it starts ~200BC and advances through time as you follow the displays. Also funny as fuck if you go on a week day as village kids are bussed in to learn the history and treat any white like a celebrity.
Temple of Literature is another must see if you like history, really chill vibes in the middle of the city.
The weekend night market on Ta Hien Street is worth a look if you want to do touristy / drunken things.
North side of Ho Tay lake is fully westernized trash, avoid.
Walking across Cau Long Bien bridge was terrifying as a lane was closed pushing 2 way traffic into a single lane but I'm glad I did it, you can also take stairs down to the farming island in the middle of the city.
I loved just walking around Yen Hoa district, no tourists and friendly locals.

Yeah that's all that was happening but it gets fucking annoying being treated like a zoo exhibit within five years max. I used to love it when people came up and wanted to talk. Now I know exactly how every conversation will go. It's like Groundhog Day. I've tried everything to make a real human connection with that type of local, but they will never see you as a person.

I'm not saying I don't like the Vietnamese, but their worst specimens are weirdly attracted to us and there's no way to deal with them that doesn't make you look like a cunt. Now I just avoid public places like I did back home.

I wonder how many local women say this.

What are those noodles called? I've been looking for them for the fucking longest.

Not noodles, it's bánh tráng trộn, literally "mixed rice paper". It's a tasty snack, real cheap on the street.

I should add it's basically goyslop btw but it's worth a try.

I've had it before. Just thought it was noodles and have been searching for them for a while now. Thanks!

Very, very good. Been making godly gains. On even days I chillmaxx at cafes, read and lift. On odd days I go on an adventure. It's my new style.

Over head press? I just do a lot of reps with a barbell and some 10lbs, maybe 25lbs on each side when things are Fappening, or I'm lit up. High reps are underrated, but then again, I don't talk to anyone about bodybuilding so I don't know the current hive-mind consensus.

I squat 225lbs and don't go higher because my rectum and intestines are weak and I fear fistulizing them. I said fuck it the other day and went up to 275lbs but now I can feel discomfort near my tail bone. My flesh mights fistulized a bit.

Any recommendations for Chinese restaurants, Chinese bars, Chinese clubs, etc in Hanoi and HCMC? I'm visiting Hanoi and HCMC for the next two weeks, speak intermediate Mandarin, and like visiting Chinese communities outside of China. I don't know why, my personal autism. All I know so far is that in Hanoi, there are some Chinese shops in the old quarter and in HCMC, Cholon is the Chinatown.
