>The generation I think of myself as part of was raised on television — which means that, at least I was raised to view television as more or less my main kind of artistic snorkel to the universe. And I think television, which is a commercial art that’s a lot of fun, that requires very little of the recipient of the art … affects what people are looking for in various kinds of art.
>Commercial entertainment — its efficiency, its sheer ability to deliver pleasure in large doses — changes people’s relationship to art and entertainment, it changes what an audience is looking for.
>It would be one thing if everybody was absolutely delighted watching TV 24/7. But we have, as a culture, not only an enormous daily watching rate but we also have a tremendous cultural contempt for TV… Now TV that makes fun of TV is itself popular TV. There’s a way in which we who are watching a whole lot are also aware that we’re missing something — that there’s something else, there’s something more.
Was he right?

he was right. i don't think people view television as art anymore though, maybe on the high level series like true detective or sopranos to a degree, but, i think people have mostly separated tv out for what it is.

I've started watching it too, always thought it was a medical soap opera but the first season at least is just a straight drama. Benton and Carter's relationship is pure kino. The impact the job has on their personal lives is probably my favorite part of the show, but yeah every show in the 90s had a Ross and Rachel subplot and it's pretty tired to see nowadays

Mom abandoning Robby actually makes sense with his "mommy issues" outburst. My gf's dad was an abusive cunt that left pretty early on and when I talk about issues between my parents or with my dad she just kind of checks out. Sympathetic, but not able to truly empathize and understand.

This movie felt really short. Also for a movie called Super Mario galaxy it didn't feel as large scale and like there was as much at stake as the previous movie. Felt like they moved between a few locations without doing anything significant and then it just ended. New characters felt empty and not as fleshed out as the first one. Fox makes a cameo and doesn't really do anything except give them a ride. Rosalina is just introduced and then gets immediately kidnapped and isn't seen again until the end. Overall movie felt thinly scraped over its meager hour and a half run time.

Considering the Super Mario Galaxy games are basically "Mario doing Mario things in space" not sure why it's such a surprise.

It felt short because it basically was. First 20 minutes are “wow space”, middle hour is “hey remember this character???” and then Bowser does his thing and credits roll. It’s a highlight reel, not a movie.

Galaxy as a game works because YOU’re the one hopping between weird planets. As a movie it just turns into a montage of backgrounds while nothing actually escalates. No emotional hook, no sense of journey, just setpiece joke needle drop next setpiece.

And yeah, Rosalina getting introduced just to be space-Peach 2.0 was lame. They’re clearly saving all the actual character stuff for sequel bait. Illumination pacing strikes again. Fast, loud, disposable.

speaking of Possessor, just watched a behind the scenes documentary on Antiviral.
fun fact was that Caleb Landry Jones didn't talk to Sarah Gadon until after the film, wanting to emulate how she's an untouchable star. pretty good actor.

This film provides a disturbing insight into the female psyche.

>heroine is undercover assassin wizard
>she assumes the identity of a showgirl in a brothel, where she teases cocks every day
>her reasons for taking this job are never explained, so it seems like she just does it for fun
>one of her customers tries to rape her. She later falls in love with this man
>that causes problems, because she already has a lover of some years. "Love" triangle ensues
>when she reunites with her old lover, he also tries to rape her
>the story is about her cockteasing one guy, then the other, and getting them so horny they go into rape mode
>in the end the two men battle to the death for ownership of the slut
>this is "romantic"

In most of the world for 10's of thousands of years a man owned a woman when he put seed in her. Didn't matter if she wanted it or not. Even today in many cultures if you want a woman you rape her and you are doing her and her family a favor by marrying her. Impregnate her if possible and she can never leave.

the vast majority of piratical actions were non-violent because despite what media shows, violence is scary, unpleasant and costly for everyone
marine insurance against piracy was common and a merchant ship would never stand a chance against a warship, so usually theyd just give up, hand over their manifest and allow the pirates pick of their wares before parting ways
