Part of the reason is it is extremely boring. Art is supposed to abstract reality, to zone in on what is of interest. The Leopard simply tries to reproduce its time period in painstaking detail. We can appreciate the craftsmanship but as a film its painfully dull and turgid.

>Malcolm X is Spike's best by a long shot
Obviously, I was just saying that Summer of Sam is his most underrated. It has a lot of great performances (especially Leguizamo who played a fantastic against-type performance), has a strong aesthetic that really nails the gritty Taxi Driver/Serpico-era NYC, and has aged a lot better than most of his other films. It's also an interesting step away from his usual subject matter too, and probably the best of his movies that don't focus on Black Americans.
>>
for me it's Bamboozled
>>
>>213981991
>Leguizamo
He's been good his entire career, I just think he was doomed to be in smaller flicks, though I'm sure he got paid voice acting in all that animated stuff
>>
>>213982722
Gotta watch it. I liked Leguizamo before he blew Bill Maher the fuck away, but after that he's dear to my heart.
What do you think about 25th Hour?
>>
>>213982765
>He's been good his entire career
For sure, he's far from a bad actor despite being incredibly annoying irl. I was very impressed when I saw him on Miami Vice, he was the best and most memorable villain on a show stacked with fantastic villains who had a frustratingly inconclusive arc (he stole Tubbs' son and they never went back to it).
Apparently he's got the Odyssey coming up, maybe he'll shine there. He says all the right things and does all the right stuff for the industry, so who knows, maybe he'll be in actual kino instead of shitty franchise crap again.
>>
The Ascent (1977) is very under underappreciated and I can see why. The subject matter is very heavy for certain type of people and the movie doesn’t have a happy ending.
>>
>>213982909
Top 5 movie of all time. Underrated as all hell.
The movie does have a quote unquote happy ending for the guys that die, though. The real bad ending is for Mr. Judas Iscariot.
>>
>>213982784
>What do you think about 25th Hour?
It's alright for what it is. I appreciate that Lee refused to back down and keep all the 9/11 stuff in it, but I think the film is a little overstuffed and too ambitious for the story he was trying to tell.
It's a good film overall though, with strong direction and a great performance from Edward Norton at his peak.
>>
>>213982981
I don't like the film that much, though I think Norton did one of his best roles in it. The 9/11 stuff is cool. I think Norton's career would have developed in a much better direction if he kept going for those gritty roles like 25th Hour and American History X instead of the soi roles like Birdman and The Illusionist. I like the dude.
>>
>>213982909
I think it lacks recognition because there's so many other fantastic Soviet war films it just inevtiably got lost in the mix. It's sort of like how Hamburger Hill got buried by Platoon, FMJ, Born On The Fourth Of July, and Casualties of War coming out at the same time.
Tragedy though, because it's an excellent film and one of Russia's best war films. It reminds me especially of Fires on the Plain.

>I think Norton's career would have developed in a much better direction if he kept going for those gritty roles like 25th Hour and American History X instead of the soi roles like Birdman and The Illusionist. I like the dude.
He's a seriously fantastic actor who I'd say hasn't lost his touch or talent; I saw him recently in A Complete Unknown and he completely nailed Pete Seeger down to his movements and inflections to the point of really elevating the film.
But yeah, I think the reason he went down that route was due to The Illusionist being a big success and him aging out of those more angry young man type roles. It worked out for him, but I really do wish he did more edgy stuff given he does that better than anyone.
To this day his two roles that are most iconic are Fight Club and American History X for a reason, and that's because it's impossible to imagine any other actor pulling off those incredibly nuanced, abrasive, and challenging characters.
He sort of reminds me of Sean Penn in that regard (though better overall).

I decided to finally watch picrel after this thread went up and we started talking about Ed Norton.
The sepia tone flashback shit at the beginning was pure cancer and the piss filter could be grating at times, but overall I found it to be a very charming and incredibly comfy movie. The performances/casting really made it for me (the three leads were fantastic, along with the crown prince), along with the autistically period-accurate fashion, architecture, and demography.
I also really wish Austria-Hungary was a more common setting for /film/, because the world of Imperial Vienna and the Czechian/Galician countryside is rendered gorgeously here. It reminded me a lot of Barry Lyndon and The Duellist especially with regards to the cinematography.

For sure, there were certain details about it that were pretty jarring compared to nushit.
Despite the disappointingly neutered screenplay (I couldn't help but wonder how incredible it would have been with somebody like Herzog in the director's chair), it was competently made and particularly well-shot. The actors involved really elevated their relatively weak source material, and the makeup/effects department worked some really cool stuff despite the limited budget (there's a scene where the crown prince slaps Sophie and you actually see the blood rush to the skin under her face in real time that impressed me), and all the attention to detail with the costumes and backgrounds really helped sell the setting and build the world. There was no lazy attempt to shoehorn in subplots about present-day issues nor feature various demographic groups out of place, it was refreshingly immersive and detailed for a newer movie given it extensively utilized location shooting and seas of region and period-appropriate extras.

Classic. You should know this. Actually you know this, you're just being a dick as usual.

>>213989152
I can't stop anybody from talking about any movie obviously, but common sense should be applied, it's pretty obvious most times what's /film/ and what's not. A movie like The Illusionist could easily have a succesfull stand alone thread on /tv/, in fact you'd probably get more engagement/discussion of it in that stand alone thread than here. Also, the fact it's an "independent" production means nothing, it's classics and arthouse, not classics, arthouse and indies, and The Illusionist is neither a classic nor arthouse in any way, shape or form.

>>
>>213994429
Bro, I was raised by a health freak, anti drugs, anti alcohol mother. My idea of counterculture is pretty much being a hippie. I knew since day one that my mom's worldview was complete garbage instilled by religious and societal programming. I've done pretty much every drug that exists and my opinion of them is that... they're not a big deal in any way. I still drink alcohol every time I can because I love it. I also was a vegetarian for a year and honestly feel eating meat is healthier and more enjoyable than just getting your protons from egg, avocados and lentils.
Point is, I'm not amused by retvrn chuds because my childhood was a constant retvrn to tradition, and it sucked massive dick. I was not allowed to eat sweets, watch TV, have a gf or do anything, pretty much. I was also forced on a fitness routine since I was 6 years old!
I rebelled against all that shit from very early on, and my idea of a healthy life is just a mix of hedonism and moderation. Retvrn chuds know jack shit about life; I unironically think they're just guilt tripping themselves and others for their own "incorrect" tendencies. I used to be addicted to sex until I gave myself permission to fap as much as I wanted. The more you try to retvrn and control shit, the more you'll be controlled by your desires.
Anyway, what have you niggas watched recently?
>>
>>213994587
>my mother was hyper controlling therefore there is no push in society to destroy you and all is well we were always at war with eurasia
>>
>>213994612
>oy vey its anudda 1984!
>>
>>213994384
Wine and single malt whiskey are some of the most sublime and rich things you can consume in life. There's a reason practically all rich people are into wine or whiskey or both. Not just drinking it but talking about it, studying it, collecting it. They haven't been duped by a scam. Just say you've haven't matured enough to appreciate the finer things. Stick to Mt Dew.
>>
Films for this feel?
>>
>>213994612
I think chuds destroy themselves way more than society ever could. Most of them are perma virgin from cope overdose.

>>213994674
The final whitepill is mixing your whiskey with blue raspberry kool aid and gummies.

Most niggas out in the world are complete sissies unable to stand up for themselves; it's laughable.

Fight Club is unintentionally deep. The author just wanted to get his erotic gay fantasies on paper and Fincher is simply a diligent technician but together they came up with something incredibly layered and cerebral.

She is so cute in this. I wish they kept the chapter from the book where Patrick has a minor emotional breakthough when they’re at dinner together and he realises that he actually likes her on some level. Overall, I feel like the movie failed to get across the ironic nature of Patrick actually being the only “real” human being with warped but nonetheless extant feelings. I feel weird about him being le cool sigma guy. That’s not who he was in the novel. I really came to care about him even though I had to put the book down once because it made me nauseous.
