Torture porn, and human killers in general, don't really scare me, it just makes me angry, which isn't the objective of a horror movie. The antagonist of the horror movie needs to be some sort mythical being, or esoteric shit, (something I can't kill with a gun) for me to be scared.

With some exceptions here and there, moviemakers typically make the viewers *worry* about the female characters who are in some physical danger, but most commonly the male characters get far more brutal treatment, or at least the female characters get their treatment largely off-screen, with the scene cutting away and stuff like that. Or some combo of the two approaches. Mainstream viewers like the thrill of worrying about the hot chick likely getting murdered, but they don't like the sight of that happening.
