this movie sucks, but it got a bunch of laughs out of meit's got iced-t and dolph lundgren, and of course the goober in chief keanuit's set in 2021 or something, and the vision of the internet is entertainingscreened as a double feature with the fifth element
Started watching this the other night and whipped out my phone to Shazam a song. I now listen to KMFDM.
The apple series better be good
gibson wrote the screen play and it was the director's feature length debutgibson should stick to books or hired a co-writer, and the director never directed a movie again
>>214127134I was always on the fence with Johnny Mnemonic. It is great as a generic mid 90's post cyberpunk sci-fi movie. I like the visuals and the overdone mid-90's take of jacking into the interwebz. The dolphin was always stupid, but it does ad to the charm of the movie. It was released four years before The Matrix. Which helped type cast Keanu into these kinds of roles. It fit in with the vibe of The Fifth Element, Gattaca, Timecop, Judge Dredd (which sucked), and Dark City. I am trying to remember what other 90's sci-fi falls into this category...
>>214127415The movie was released in the early 90's when the internet was still new to the masses. So it has that VR 'fly through the internet' futuretech shit going on... https://youtu.be/SoxGazX_kkwThe movie Hackers did it too, even though it was set in 1995: https://youtu.be/vYNnPx8fZBs
Cyberpunk 2077 is like what if Johnny Mnemonic but le good
>>214127415it's definitely not a good movie, but it's got some fun schlocki was surprised to see takeshi kitano in iti like gibson's cyberpunk ideas a lot, which heavily influenced the matrix, but they weren't well realized in this movie in many ways
>>214127607the entire theater was rolling with laughter at the internet scenes
I suppose the problem is that cyberpunk is a genre that depends on style and the rule of cool, but nothing in Johnny Mnemonic is stylish or cool.
>>214127770>the entire theater was rolling with laughter at the internet scenesThat kind of 'future tech' cyberspace was a pretty common trope with mid-90's sci-fi movies. Virtuosity is another one from 1995 that I can think of. Ghost in the Shell too, which was 1995. It was an Anime movie, but has a lot of the same ideas. I guess The Lawnmower Man was an earlier attempt at this type of movie. I'm not saying that Johnny Mnemonic is a good movie. But it is a perfect kinda cheesy mid 90's cyberspace/ cyberpunk sci-fi movie. I do like the idea of these 'carriers' who deliver valuable data in their heads to locations. The flow of information being firewalled across different countries (like real life).
>>214127928The laser whip was cool.
>>214127696Where does Henry Rollins rank on the fag scale in relation to Anthony Bourdain (10)? He's a cool dude but he's also kind of a fag.
>>214127147Based late to the party rocker!Make sure to watch the Manga entertainment trailer for 90s magic.
Without this movie, my favorite artist never makes my favorite song of theirs. Le Matos - Complete Memory Recovery. Movie is mid tho.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aci0He1D10E

The last two are much more contemporary. The internet was a really big deal in 1995.
