The first is Tim Burton fans who only like it because it's Tim Burtons famous visual style and off putting character writing, the second are people who watched it as kids before seeing the original and have super nostalgia for it, and the third is people who pretend it's secret kino because Mike Stoklasa hates it. You can't have a mysterious, fantastical place that feels out of this world when the entire world is wacky and fantastical. Narnia would suck ass if the kids were living in a magical fantasy world and then walked into another magical fantasy world.There's also a lot of points i made that are not regarding the visual style. Infact, over all the visual style is one of the lesser offending aspects of the film. You cannot defend Depp and burtons complete fundamental misunderstanding of Wonka's character (yes, i've read the books. Gene's Wonka is far closer to the books) that turns him into a vindictive villain that commands no respect from the viewer or the in universe characters. Wonka is supposed to be seen by people in universe as mysterious, perhaps a bit aloof and uncaring for what he precieves as jaded adult behavior. Depp's wonka is seen in universe (and by the sensible viewer) as annoying, vindictive, petulant, childish, and unhinged in a frightening way, not a mysterious way. He also actively hates the children, which isn't the point of Wonka being annoyed with them. He doesn't hate kids.That doesn't touch how they objectively wrote every main character to be far more vapid, shallow and annoying compared to the books or the orginal film. Charlie is serviceable when he's not being used as a visual gag for the first part of the film, and grandpa joe essentially doesn't exist in the Burton version.

At the time it was pretty cool to see a different take on a familiar story, especially since I was a fan of the book and saw the ways in which the 71 film deviated. But I also found Depps Wonka off-putting as a kid and the Burton style was hit and miss. I will say though, I love the soundtrack and the atmosphere it creates. Plus the sets and production design is top notch. So whilst I prefer the 71 film, I don’t hate the 2005 one
