>>214133869I haven't seen anything of his post-Scott Pilgrim.
Hot Shots is the best of the 3The World's End would be good but I'm not some burnout
>>214133869no, he got blueballed with his ant man and since then he's made shit after shit after shit
>>214133894Hot Fuzz, brainfartanon. Yeah it's the only one that still holds up and also was the funniest when it was released. The first half of The World's End is kind of good (a bit painfully because I'm literally the Gen-X stereotype protagonist down) but once the alien invasion of the body snatchers angle starts it sucks ass.
>>214133951Helps that Hot Fuzz and Shawn of the Dead were movies that parodied and played with their genre tropes. The World's End was just a Gen X therapy session that just becomes a alien movie. No twist or funny callback to anything. Just straight forward. It's dull unless you deeply relate to the absolute loser of a protagonist.
>>214133869Baby Driver was legitimately one of the worst movies I've ever seen

>>214134811NTA but it's fucking cringe. The dadrock needle drops didn't help.
>>214133869No. He hasn't made anything good since going mainstream. Hot Fuzz was unironically his last great movie. He needs Simon as a writing partner for the warmth and intelligence that he brings. Otherwise he gets too up his own ass with the concept and flashy filmmaking and forgets to write a good story

>>214134861>>214134034Baby driver was great, it has great car chases, the music nostalgia shit was popular at the time. LOL
Why is Shaun of the Dead called a horror comedy and held up by many as a perfect representative of the genre? There is absolutely nothing scary about SOTD, it's a 100% straight comedy, albeit in the zombie key. I can understand when American Werewolf is given the same praise since there are a couple of moments that are at least unnerving, if not outright scary, but SOTD I just don't get.
>>214133594confident glint with a balding pattern is unstoppable. no fks given
>>214137376well maybe im oversensitive but i was extremely horrified by the part where shaun watches his mother turn into a zombie and then has to put her down like ol yeller after watching the last traces of humanity leave her eyes in real time
>>214137376this + there's some jump scares + the final standoff where they're surrounded + we're talking about genres here, let's not split hairs
>>214137550I unironically don't remember that part, I only remember that Nick Frost turns into a zombie at the end, but they still live together
>>214134982
>>214133869He fell off when he stopped making straight comedies, World's End was his last decent flick
>>214137376The part where they rip open that dude's stomach was pretty good
>>214137376I dunno, it has some creepy moments. The creepy stuff at the start (woman fainting, man running), the zombie mom attacking her kids while Shaun drives past, the body bag moving. Even most of the stuff at the Winchester is pretty creepy, like the zombies outside the door and the shadows slowly approaching the windows
>>214137550The bite reveal is great. There's a brief moment right before she shows the bite to Liz where Liz asks if she's alright, and the mum gives this very brief but totally insincere smile and never answers the question. It's a genuinely terrific bit of acting. I notice it every time. Shaun gets me every time too. "OH NO MUM! NO! COME ON! COME ON!"
>everyone and their mums is packin round ere >like who?>farmers>who else?>farmer's mums
>>214134034same. had to turn it off by 2/3rd of the movie, it was fucking insufferable.>>214133897best way to describe it. after marvel fucked him, he lost his spark or something

>>214133594It's a simple gag that always gets a chuckle out of me
This visual gag from Airplane is one of my favorite ones of all time. The "No... that's what they'll be expecting us to do." gag near the end is also really funny.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0D-n0yctyGY
>>214137376This might be a news flash for you but Horror is a genre, not a "must be scary" requirement.Horror can encompass themes, moods and imagery.Body horror, Gore movies? Unease, disgust, abjection; NOT intended to scare. Most people describe zombie movies as not scary which can be true. They are intended to illicit sense of Hopelessness, dread, abjection among others.Zombies are the looming tide, an ever closing end of days that represents the world is fucked, even if you survive there is nothing left, everyone you love is dead and now wants to eat you. It's not primarily intended to scare you.
>>214139201I honestly think these movies are an iq test. Yeah, they're a fun watch but they not hilarious by a long shot
>>214133869Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz are lightning in the bottle kind of movies
>>214140163Do you consider Nightmare Before Christmas horror because it has Halloween archetypes in it? Not all horror ends up scary, but most make an honest attempt at it. For a good example of a real horror comedy (i.e. both scares and laughs) see Barbarian or Weapons.
>>214134922It's basically an episode of Spaced parodying 28 Days Later with the character names changed stretched out for like 90 minutes, back when the zombie movies had not had a full on comeback.
>>214135309>>his name is george merchant>>made his fortune in kitchen goodsI get the magnet joke, but what about these?
>>214140794A merchant is a person who sells goods
>>214140794the fridge magnet pun only reveals itself in the third line. the name is not exactly relevant to that joke, it's just what skinner says in between the two lines for the joke.
>>214133594Here, have a better quality version.
>>214140847How does the pun only reveal itself in that line? If he is a fridge magnate, then obviously he deals in fridges and possibly related items. The third line does not contain any new information that could be relevant to make the joke work.
my favorite background gag is the swear box. it's hard to notice on the first watch because it's not the focus of any of the scenes, just a small detail, but it adds so much when you do notice it>puts in coin>LESLIE TILLER WAS FUCKING MURDERED>COURSE HE FUCKING WAS>Danny puts in coin>THANK YOU DANNY
>>214133594for me its>Feel free to SPOOL through
>>214133869After 25 years its worth going back to Spaced
>>214141145This was at a time when you could get four pints for a tenner. Butterman wasn't playing with those fines
>>214141142it tells you the joke without making it explicit by giving you a second chance to think about it. just the pun itself would be too throwaway of a line. even so most people never realize it and i only did after a couple of rewatches.
>>214141145>four creatively censored swears>CUNT
The whole scene with the farmer and the sea mine is fucking gold. Kills me everytime>Yes, I suppose
>>214141142>that's the fridge magnateA pun that sounds like "fridge magnet">his name is george merchantHumorous coincidence that a man named George Merchant is a merchant.>made his fortune in kitchen goodsNeedless and overly specific redundant comment, which, given the context of the scene indicates that the whole series of statements is a joke. It's not a "laugh out loud" joke, but it's appreciable and clever humor. A similar joke from a different movie:>Oh right, the poison>The poison for Kuzco>The poison chosen specifically to kill Kuzco>Kuzco's poison.
>>214133594Every scene with the Andys is pure kino
>>214140752Why would a Christmas movie be considered horror? Do you just argue for the sake of arguing?
>>214139950Was Airplane the first?
>>214133594This movie and others like it ITT can never be made today. Not just because most writers are shit, but they are specifically instructed NOT to have visually important elements that you need to pay attention to. In netflix movies, it’s mandated that everybody says out loud what they are doing so you can “watch” a movie and not pay particular attention. It’s written like shit on purpose and characters are nok stop yapping.
>>214133594That's a visual gag that's been done to death countless times since the 70s.
>>214133869Nup. Turns out his films are really awful when Simon Pegg isn't writing his scripts.(Though his documentary The Sparks Brothers was alright if you're a music nerd)
>>214137376No horror comedy movie is scary anon.
>>214143374And yet it’s still funny every time.
>no luck catching them swans then?
>>214140920Thank you, kind anon.
>>214141558>This might be a news flash for you but Horror is a genre, not a "must be scary" requirement.>Horror can encompass themes, moods and imagery.this is what that anon said, by his definition NBC may be classified as horror since it encompasses such themes and imagery. I agree that the definition of horror is somewhat loose (as with almost all genres), but I believe a good of rule of thumb is whether the film is in the least scary or not
>>214139866>I've seen this movie a gazillion times and I never once got that "fridge magnate" was a pun. Fuck meThat's one of the best things about this movie. Several years ago in another Hot Fuzz thread someone pointed out the scene where they confiscate all the old guns from Walder Frey and at the end they think he accidentally set off the sea mine and they run and jump over the bushes......they were only able to make the jump because those were the very hedges he trimmed that led to the complaint that brought them out there. What a level of detail.
>>214134982the "wrong foot" always gets me
Hot Fuzz has a perfect script. Not that it's a perfect movie but from a writing perspective there is not a single wasted scene or line of dialogue. It baffles me that Edgar Wright has done nothing but hackjobs since.
>>214137376>scaryHorror does not mean scary. The Thing is not scary but still a horror movie.
>>214143964You don't know who it might be scary too. I know this girl, bitch may get spooked by her own shadow if the conditions are right, I am sure this film would scare her. My point is that there's a pretense at horror, the film at least attempts to scare you, whether you respond to that or not. I don't see that attempt in SOTD, it's just a comedy with zombie trappings. I am reasonably sure even this chick wouldn't find it scary.
>>214133594I love how his hair is slightly balder irl than in the photo. like how did they even do that? which is the real hair?
>>214140238>>214133594I used to cope that he'd make kino again like those, but it's true. He peaked hard on Hot Fuzz, I've seen it like 20 times, still comfy to watch and enjoyable. It's all encompassing and made for natural movie-enjoyers. To this day I've never heard a theater laugh so hard and consistently at a movie. It wasn't even a packed theater. World's End was respectable, but you could tell he was already losing his edge. Baby Driver is an abomination, borderline parody of himself, he was absolutely trying to appeal to mass audiences at that point.
I think The Worlds End is underrated and I say this as someone who hated it when I first watched it.
>>214144125Probably just photoshopped the photo
Shaun = Fuzz > Baby Driver Opening > World’s Ends POWER GAP rest of Baby Driver
I really like The World's End, but I hate the ending because it completely vindicates Garry. Everything goes to shit and he (again) abandons his friends in order to play apocalypse cowboy with their younger duplicates. It's like his character arc reverts at the last minute.
>>214144501That's basically how all of the Cornetto trilogy movies are. Shaun is still a manchild who fucks up everything by the end of SOTD. Nicholas I guess learns to stop being a bureaucrat but it's only his obsession with being a just cop that makes him go back in the first place.
>P I Staker>Piss Taker>COME ON!

>>214137709Almost the entire third act completely drops the comedy. From the moment they enter the pub the film becomes grim and tense except for a brief bit of fun action when the jukebox turns on. Not really sure how you could forget that whole sequence.
