>>

Hot Fuzz, brainfartanon. Yeah it's the only one that still holds up and also was the funniest when it was released.

The first half of The World's End is kind of good (a bit painfully because I'm literally the Gen-X stereotype protagonist down) but once the alien invasion of the body snatchers angle starts it sucks ass.
>>
>>214133951
Helps that Hot Fuzz and Shawn of the Dead were movies that parodied and played with their genre tropes. The World's End was just a Gen X therapy session that just becomes a alien movie. No twist or funny callback to anything. Just straight forward. It's dull unless you deeply relate to the absolute loser of a protagonist.

No. He hasn't made anything good since going mainstream. Hot Fuzz was unironically his last great movie. He needs Simon as a writing partner for the warmth and intelligence that he brings. Otherwise he gets too up his own ass with the concept and flashy filmmaking and forgets to write a good story

Why is Shaun of the Dead called a horror comedy and held up by many as a perfect representative of the genre? There is absolutely nothing scary about SOTD, it's a 100% straight comedy, albeit in the zombie key. I can understand when American Werewolf is given the same praise since there are a couple of moments that are at least unnerving, if not outright scary, but SOTD I just don't get.

The bite reveal is great. There's a brief moment right before she shows the bite to Liz where Liz asks if she's alright, and the mum gives this very brief but totally insincere smile and never answers the question. This might be a news flash for you but Horror is a genre, not a "must be scary" requirement.
Horror can encompass themes, moods and imagery.

Body horror, Gore movies? Unease, disgust, abjection; NOT intended to scare.
Most people describe zombie movies as not scary which can be true.
They are intended to illicit sense of Hopelessness, dread, abjection among others.
Zombies are the looming tide, an ever closing end of days that represents the world is fucked, even if you survive there is nothing left, everyone you love is dead and now wants to eat you.
It's not primarily intended to scare you.
>>
>>214139201
I honestly think these movies are an iq test. Yeah, they're a fun watch but they not hilarious by a long shot
>>
>>214133869
Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz are lightning in the bottle kind of movies
>>
>>214140163
Do you consider Nightmare Before Christmas horror because it has Halloween archetypes in it? Not all horror ends up scary, but most make an honest attempt at it. For a good example of a real horror comedy (i.e. both scares and laughs) see Barbarian or Weapons.

How does the pun only reveal itself in that line? If he is a fridge magnate, then obviously he deals in fridges and possibly related items. The third line does not contain any new information that could be relevant to make the joke work.
>>
my favorite background gag is the swear box. it's hard to notice on the first watch because it's not the focus of any of the scenes, just a small detail, but it adds so much when you do notice it

A pun that sounds like "fridge magnet"
>his name is george merchant
Humorous coincidence that a man named George Merchant is a merchant.
>made his fortune in kitchen goods
Needless and overly specific redundant comment, which, given the context of the scene indicates that the whole series of statements is a joke.

It's not a "laugh out loud" joke, but it's appreciable and clever humor.

A similar joke from a different movie:
>Oh right, the poison

>Kuzco's poison.

This movie and others like it ITT can never be made today. Not just because most writers are shit, but they are specifically instructed NOT to have visually important elements that you need to pay attention to. In netflix movies, it’s mandated that everybody says out loud what they are doing so you can “watch” a movie and not pay particular attention. It’s written like shit on purpose and characters are nok stop yapping.

this is what that anon said, by his definition NBC may be classified as horror since it encompasses such themes and imagery. I agree that the definition of horror is somewhat loose (as with almost all genres), but I believe a good of rule of thumb is whether the film is in the least scary or not
>>
>>214139866
>I've seen this movie a gazillion times and I never once got that "fridge magnate" was a pun. Fuck me
That's one of the best things about this movie.
Several years ago in another Hot Fuzz thread someone pointed out the scene where they confiscate all the old guns from Walder Frey and at the end they think he accidentally set off the sea mine and they run and jump over the bushes...
...they were only able to make the jump because those were the very hedges he trimmed that led to the complaint that brought them out there.
What a level of detail.

You don't know who it might be scary too. I know this girl, bitch may get spooked by her own shadow if the conditions are right, I am sure this film would scare her. My point is that there's a pretense at horror, the film at least attempts to scare you, whether you respond to that or not. I don't see that attempt in SOTD, it's just a comedy with zombie trappings. I am reasonably sure even this chick wouldn't find it scary.

I used to cope that he'd make kino again like those, but it's true. He peaked hard on Hot Fuzz, I've seen it like 20 times, still comfy to watch and enjoyable. It's all encompassing and made for natural movie-enjoyers. To this day I've never heard a theater laugh so hard and consistently at a movie. It wasn't even a packed theater. World's End was respectable, but you could tell he was already losing his edge. Baby Driver is an abomination, borderline parody of himself, he was absolutely trying to appeal to mass audiences at that point.
>>
I think The Worlds End is underrated and I say this as someone who hated it when I first watched it.
>>
>>214144125

>>
Shaun = Fuzz > Baby Driver Opening > World’s Ends

>>
I really like The World's End, but I hate the ending because it completely vindicates Garry. Everything goes to shit and he (again) abandons his friends in order to play apocalypse cowboy with their younger duplicates. It's like his character arc reverts at the last minute.
>>
>>214144501
That's basically how all of the Cornetto trilogy movies are. Shaun is still a manchild who fucks up everything by the end of SOTD. Nicholas I guess learns to stop being a bureaucrat but it's only his obsession with being a just cop that makes him go back in the first place.

other than being funny at the moment, it's still a storytelling element: the expression is exactly the same in picture and real life, but the lighting is completely different. the shadows under his eyes make his smile a bit creepy, they are foretelling that he is a bad guy. either he is completely evil and purposefully pretending to be good as his past self in the picture was, or he still has enough good to look like it, but some evil makes it out subconsciously

To elaborate if you have seen the movie:
>grr i can't believe doctor who as a pimp killed anya! grr evil man!
>you, you old bastard in the pub, you're him, the evil pimp but old! i will confront you over your evil pimping and murder
>oh my landlady is such a darling
If you were paying attention to the movie you'd have to be retarded to not see the obvious twists coming regarding those three points

the joke is that they're committed to putting money in the swear box whilst actively discussing a string of murders
especially when Nicolas pre-emptively puts the coin in the jar
do you not see how that contrast is funny?

Why does the NWA joke go over people's heads? It's the most obvious fucking thing

>In netflix movies, it’s mandated that everybody says out loud what they are doing so you can “watch” a movie and not pay particular attention.
I don't watch Netflix movies, but I'm fascinated by this claim. Can you prove this is true?

>Walder Frey is Farmer Webley
>The Hound says "yarp"
>The Archmaester is Inspector Butterman
I used to think the kid in the bar who said he said born in 1969 played Hot Pie but I was mistaken.

I also thought it was kino for what it’s worth.
