It kinda worked in the first film because the creature was changing shape between encounters which made it seem adaptable and unique and because the humans were confined to narrow spaces without access to firearms.
But once you do away with those elements and when the novelty wears off there isn't much you can do to keep things interesting.

It’s perfect from the perspective of the company. It’s ultra adaptive, biologically immortal, no disease, etc. It’s the sort of thing you harvest for its features and then blend into the human genome and become superhuman. If you found something like that on Earth and could safely CRISPR it’s DNA in your own, billionaires would exterminate entire nations to get their hands on it.

freeze responses make sense as an evolved survival mechanism when you think about the predators that could pose a threat to humans, its the default but you train yourself to move past it, obviously these rescue squads or whatever have never been confronted with a bear or tiger or xenomorph rapemachine.

>>
>>214141613
no it doesnt make any sense as an instinct actually. Any predator is going to already be aware of you because of their better senses, if it's hunting, you freezing means you die, if its not youre better off retreating.

Apes/monkeys typically use their numbers and screeching/throwing shit to dissuade predators

I don't remember this scene. When is it?
>>
>>214141780
almost all predators will decide you're prey if you run away from them with your back turned when they're not sure about you, you're not going to freeze when its coming from behind because you don't see it and thats irrelevant, typically predators aren't sure about humans when they run into them but many animals such as bears might decide to charge anyway and can often be deterred if you make noise and make yourself big, in which case its convenient to have a freeze response that forces you to drop everything and think for a second about what's happening, rather than a flee response, you know like prey animals that predators hunt by recognising them as fleeing animals. people who retreated instead of freezing were much more likely to die and the freezing response stayed in the genepool, think for a second.
>>
>>214141770
they always were always less dangerous than grizzly+ bears, I dont think people have any idea how big they are. Wiki says 300-400 lbs for a xeno @ 7-8ft tall seems way too high but even at that a polar bear is like 4x more and 10 ft tall

also moose is like a polar bear weight with antlers

>>
>>214142004
so when is that scene roughly >>214141619 I've seen Aliens 50 times and don't remember it
>>
Xenos are way more dangerous than any predator on earth simply because they actively go out of their way to hunt humans, are extremely aggressive, navigate their environment really well and are very agile, no predator on earth has all these traits at the same time

its not really how big or strong they are, its more about their intelligence, agility and aggression

>typically predators aren't sure about humans
thats because we dont live in the wilderness anymore...the instincts evolved when we were there.

flee vs freeze varies. a wolfpack wont be deterred by freeze they will nip at you after encircling, many pack animals do not freeze (anything with tusks or antlers, will "circle the wagons" wagons = offspring & females)

freeze is only useful with timid animals that dont want to risk a fight, it wont work on starving animals either. Lastly freeze isn't the default response, it varies in people. Go watch an indian tiger attack.
>>
>>214142035
>navigate their environment really well and are very agile
>>214141770 not anymore
>>
>>214142090
i dont know what you're even arguing about, it seems you have black and white thinking and think that because a freeze response isn't a universal immortality hack that it isnt real or useful.
also wolves aren't really aggressive towards humans and pack animals obviously don't freeze because they are runners and prey, animals logically are always unsure about humans because they are always unsure about other animals their size aswell, let alone the strangeness of humans, last but not least, indians are not humans.
>>
>>214142210
I dunno I guess my argument is you're wrong except for this:
>indians are not humans
my point about packs not fleeing was because the instinct response for the predator will be to attack and circle when they 'freeze' which wont benefit a human (well, your idea of a human anyway)
>>
>>214142304
how is it not natural for a freeze response to have evolved in humans? it makes perfect sense for highly intelligent species with subpar senses to run into something and survive because it froze still for a split second and THOUGHT of a way to survive. the whole thing turns into FIGHT OR FLIGHT RESPONSE. its not even controversial.

She's a synth and a highly advances one with a human-ish mind copied onto it. Who knows what else she can do. It's pretty obvious she's more than any other synth we've seen so far, bordering on EU stuff from the comics, books and games. It's not a big stretch to think she can magnet stuff to herself if she wants. Her ability to interface wirelessly with electronics is also top tier, they didn't seem to think she could control systems that way. Imagine the military possibilities, being able to scale a skyscraper without gear by sticking to the steel one foot and hand at a time, hanging onto moving vehicles, all sorts of stuff.

thats why writers is retarded. they literally have no idea what robots is and how they made. Everyone who fucking was related to manufacturing knows what she can do and is capable off. There is scematics and shit. Someone should have to engineer all the shit she can do.

It would only have worked like that if they were using the cyborgs and tech from some alien ship they found and use it blindly.

It was the perfect enemy for the situation the original Alien crew found themselves in. Trapped in a gothic spaceship with an ambush predator which they can't shoot. An enemy that rapes you to create more of itself. Its the ultimate nightmare scenario.
While Aliens was a great sequel it also ruined the alien itself. The ruined ship, the dead pilot, the cargo hold filled with eggs, that was creepy and mysterious. But the more they revealed about the alien, the more that mystique was ripped away.
If they wanted to keep the alien scary, they would have stopped using it. The sequel would have started off with a military squad expecting to find the alien from the first film, only to be confronted by a totally new monster with different abilities.
>>
>>214143017
like i said, its not an infallible thing, its an instinct overriding fleeing which would get a human killed 10x more likely, i am talking solely about the split second freeze, not what comes after, logically in a hunter gatherer tribe, you'd learn how to deal with various situations. then when you have skills, you may run into something unexpectedly and instead of having an instinct of charging it head-on (not compatible with human biology), or running away (not compatible with human biology), you freeze and remember and think of what to do.

The first movie is brilliant since the alien is truly alien.
The way it is found, the intrusive implanting scene akin to rape, the mpreg gestating, the fact that it grows to adult size so quickly, it showing intelligence and cunning so fast, ....
and you can never really tell how smart it is or if even is smart.

later on it was just turned into a generic animal monster enemy and they tried to recapture the "alien" aspect of it through various hybrids and adjacent stuff but it lost it's appeal

My favorite part about Alien is unironically Ash. I love how little we get on him, his entire "life" is a mystery. He envies humans and aliens, and it just feels so real. He's in the medical field because life itself fascinates him. You get the impression he's wandered the galaxy for a decade or more watching people from the shadows, lusting for life but unable to connect with others or pass on his genetic material. He's a dead end, just like the Puppet Master from GITS but without any redeeming qualities. Ash is the ultimate corporate slave, a sexless worker drone who values orders over human life.
The fact you get so much on a tertiary antagonist from a borderline B-Movie is what elevates Alien from schlock to kino. In the script, the characters are flatter than an ironing board. On the big screen they all feel so real.

I like Ash too. It's pretty easy to miss that the Nostromo stopped at a port and the company sent urgent orders to replace their standard science officer with Ash. So they knew there was a strange signal out there, but didn't know what it was. Just investigate and their secret operative Ash would ensure any extraterrestrial life was brought back.

No scene like that, Ripley doesn't encounter any aliens until after she gets Newt and walks into the egg room with the Queen. There is a scene during that where she is destroying the eggs and an alien comes behind her jumping around the ceiling and newt grabs ripley and says "behind you" and she kills it.

I disagree. Having it look human but monstrous is more unnerving than having it look like "animalistic" which again reemphasizes Cameron's take where they're just like large predators basically like a tiger except alien.
Xenos having a more of a human profile conveys they're "on our level" except alien, and not an animal.

For me it was despite the fact we are lightyears from earth, we're years into the future, watching giant blue aliens, where we should be capable of any far fetched science fiction plot.. we got a plot and character acting out a US based family sitcom about a marine dad and his rebellious high school children.

At least Cameron is having fun. I can't even really criticise him. Ridley gets celebrated by reddit psueds for putting shitty god allegories into his work like it's so deep, man.
>>
>>214136484
It's not even that, the whole point of the monologue was about how he admired its "purity" i.e. that it just killed shit without pretending to give a shit about ethics like humans do, explicitly contrasting it to the hypocrisy of the humans sending fellow humans out to die. It's a theme that is followed up on in the sequel with "I don't know which species is worse Burke, you don't see them screwing each other over a god damned percentage!". But no, every shit film after the first two has to pretend like some animal that is weak to 9mm rounds and has an impossible to sustain reproduction method is "the ultimate lifeform".
>>
>>214141770
is there in lore reason why aliens take their time mouthfucking someone?
>>

Even the second film had to contrive a very specific set of circumstances to make the aliens a threat. And even within those constraints the Marines who survive the initial friendly fire incident that destroys their ammo and most of their number spend most of the movie kicking the aliens ass's. Each marine guns down like twenty times their number in aliens despite the aliens being given every single advantage possible.

My cat is elderly, missing one of her back legs, and her previous owner declawed her. She still kills rodents by the bushel. Exactly. He envies the alien because it is free in all the ways he is not. It doesn't have some ethics program that prevents it from murdering the whole crew whenever it wants unless ordered too (and you get the impression from the film Ash would have become a serial killer if he was allowed to). It doesn't have to play pretend at the dinner table making niceties and pretending to be a doctor. It doesn't have to wear clothes.

The way to deter a wolfpack is to protect your core and try to land a really good kick, preferably an axe kick, preferably on the top of the head of one the more aggressive wolves. Or even a hammer fist. Depending on how good you are you might basically one hit kill the thing because the tops of their heads are flat so you can split their skulls and give them disastrous concussions.
Even if it keeps attacking you the horrific dying screams it makes may deter the pack, especially if you do it to a second one.
Climbing a tree is still the much better option and you're very unlikely to encounter this problem ever, but it might even work with some aggressive groups of midsize dogs that aren't specifically trained to attack and are just being savage.

I know it may sound stupid to try to inflict deep psychological terror on animals in a way that probably you can't pull off more than a few times, like won't be able to kill them all that way, but canines are extremely social animals and as much scavengers or pack hunters, so even a prey animal they target that turns out to be more vicious or stronger than they expected (they usually go for young/stragglers) can become as terrifying to them as a big cat is under the right circumstances.
The obvious downside is that even if you have no other choice, the memory of killing a dog like that would no doubt stay with you for life. Still better than dying though.

They don't always kill what they hunt because sometimes they take live prey back to the nest so they can get facehugged and make more aliens.

In some circumstances they feel threatened and just automatically kill everything with no hesitation, and in some circumstances they're in resource gathering mode and are specifically trying to capture live prey. And sometimes they haven't decided yet. The pregnant pause is them deciding whether to kill or not kill.

>I just don't think the show is very good. I went in with a lot of optimism that it would be a new page for the Alien franchise but it's really just not.

>The premise stinks. It doesn't even seem to be asking any philosophical questions as to what it means to be human and whether your consciousness is still you even if it's no longer in your body.

>It's just a bad concept. The characters all being literal children in teenage android bodies is just bad. The "boy genius" character is cringe and doesn't even come off as intelligent. The technology is also inconsistent with all the other tech in every other alien movies, this is always an issue with every new media property in the alien universe though.

>Alien Isolation is unironically still the best Alien property since the original movie and Aliens. Everything else can't hold a candle to that. Romulus was a disappointment too, though it wasn't as bad as Alien Earth has been so far. At least it seemed to be inspired heavily by the first Alien.

>Honestly, the Alien in this show even doesn't feel like the Alien, and I hate all the constant ret-conning with each new movie as to the origin of how the Aliens were made / discovered. It's just too all over the place and filled with plot holes to the point it's swiss cheese.

She didn't pierce its skin. Aliens don't have skin. They have exoskeletons. She tabbed it through its inner jaw, which is like its tongue. There's not acid in the tongue.

All of that is kino. Prometheus had a lot of problems but the origin of the aliens wasn't one of them.
>>
>>214159635
Also matches alien 4 where ripley gives the inner jaw to a character as a gift, there was no acid

Reminder: Space Jockey was just a space explorer attached to an organic ship that ran across a temple of parasitic eggs. They infected and killed him, but not before he set up a warning signal to stay away from a hazard. They weren't his bioweapons. He's not out to kill all humans (which weren't even a thing when he died). He was trying to be nice and helpful so others wouldn't suffer the same fate.

Honestly I don't think much about the canon of the alien universe as someone who reads, watches and plays a lot of the media. The world is used to tell stories and them not fitting too neatly into a box is fine since you have 100+ people making stuff in a sci-fi setting but it is neat that the alien 4 and earth have that inner jaw no acid thing in common. It's also pretty clear from a lot of these threads that some anons don't even understand the movies they have seen like the facehugger blood in 1 being different from xeno blood in 2 and further different in 4. It's all just different stuff made to serve the story being told and those differences can be handwaved with a tiny bit of speculation and imagination on the viewers part and doesn't ruin the final product.

Right. It would have been far better as a single storyline made by a single person with a vision they were passionate about. They never work out well when made by a bunch of random disconnected people, years apart, who don't give a shit about a lore, and just making entertainment to get butts in theater seats. Oh well.

I think more what they always meant was just that it can survive in just about any condition and be just fine because its a weird silicon based lifeform with molecular acid for blood.

>a tertiary antagonist
That's a massive understatement, if anything Ash is the co-antagonist, together with the xeno; who the hell is the secondary if you consider him the tertiary? And I don't know if Alien ever approached B-movie territory. It was produced by Fox, had a substantial budget, a director with a critically acclaimed debut and previous experience (in advertising, yes), plenty of experienced crew, and Jerry fucking Goldsmith for a composer. Show me a B-movie of this pedigree.

I dig the digitigrade look but the CGI/puppet always look awkward when standing. That's why all bipedal creature are plantigrade, also >>214149763

The whole human but not quite is closer to Giger's vision, the creature needs an human/sexual element that is lost in the digitigrade look.

The alien is just a wild animal/sentient creature born in a hostile environment surrounded by weird squishy meat people. Arguably its just trying to defend itself, and is just following instinct.
