I know it may sound stupid to try to inflict deep psychological terror on animals in a way that probably you can't pull off more than a few times, like won't be able to kill them all that way, but canines are extremely social animals and as much scavengers or pack hunters, so even a prey animal they target that turns out to be more vicious or stronger than they expected (they usually go for young/stragglers) can become as terrifying to them as a big cat is under the right circumstances. The obvious downside is that even if you have no other choice, the memory of killing a dog like that would no doubt stay with you for life. Still better than dying though.
