Thrawn even mentions to Vader how much a waste it is making the Death Star when putting all that into building the TIE Defenders he designed would vastly improve controlling the Empire cause they can be spread out to control multiple systems as opposed to one big planet killing space station. It parallels Hitler's "Wonder Weapons" and all the money wasted on them cause they were massive targets for the Allies to attack and destroy.

Realistically how do you conitinue to maintain a name for yourself creatively speaking when you're literally the guy who killed Star Wars? Rian Johnson probably fucked up even more than Abrams did, but he has the luxury of being only being responsible for the diabolical but least important middle act. The trilogy could still have flourished with a strong start and finish, and Abrams will always be responsible for spectacularly dropping the ball. It really did show how talentless and uninspired the man is on the biggest stage possible.

There's deceit, there's misdirection, there's ambiguity, but it works because the rules of the universe still have to correspond to reality and things eventually have to be resolved. The Resistance being reduced to 15 people int he Millennium Falcon is basically retconned, and they once again have a major military presence somehow. The First Order being decapitated and usurped by a manchild with no coherent ambition or vision for the future is made totally irrelevant with the Palpatine revival plot and the Exigol fleet poofed into existence by the writers. Rey being "nobody" is also totally ignored in favor of making her a Palpatine.Basically, it makes no sense for JJ to completely fuck up an easy slam dunk trilogy by producing TLJ. It is far more likely that he simply handed the reins over to Johnson and he made a dog's dinner of it.
