Am watching first contact. its introduction to the borg zombies is one of the best depiction of the borg. really got the horror element down that the production value of the show proper just didnt have the budget for.

>>214148530I don't even remember the last time I was banned. You're living in the past. Which I guess is an oldtrek geezer personality trait. In any case, I must thank you! You seethed so much about SNW, without being able to say why, that I took your opinion as a counter-recommendation, and have now watched the first 2 episodes of SNW. I thoroughly enjoyed both of them! They were truly in the best spirit of Trek. And the resolution of the religious undertones was very satisfying. So thank you for seething! So keep up the good work! No doubt, your distasteful example will inspire other people ITT to try out whatever it is you hate.
Is there a comprehensive list of just all the worthwhile Star Trek media I should consume? (series, movies, books, video games, etc.). I mainly prefer sci-fi with a focus on exploring exotic alien planets and interesting sci-fi concepts over politics or melodrama but as long as the writing is good I'll look into it
the reason Dukat cared about Ziyal so much more than any of his other family is because he literally was going to FUCKING KILL HER for selfish reasons, and she KNEW that and even still she still forgave him and fell in love with him as a person. I know it's mostly men in this general so you see nothing wrong with that but it is literally setting up Ziyal as what they call the "narcissus supply" which is what people like Dukat need to live. they DESPERATELY need people that mean NOTHING to them but they mean EVERYTHING to that person and that is exactly the relationship you see them have. he uses Ziyak to triangulate and manipulate Kira which was the plan all along! do you honestly think if Kira hadn't been there in the slave mines watching him he wouldn't have put lead directly into Ziyal's brain and be done with it? and despite all this he's still a fun and lovable character. and it's SOLELY due to Marc Alaimo's performance. the writers were such fucking retards. the either didn't realize or actively resented the GOLD they had and destroyed it.

>>214149028There are various "ranking lists" floating around, but I can't vouch for any of them. Given your preferences, I'd say start with TOS. It was like "Wagon Train" in space, with a healthy dose of Outer Limits. Perhaps start with "The Return Of The Archons", "The Alternative Factor", and "The Doomsday Machine".

>>214149147thank you
>>214149028TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENTThe first 6 movies are TOS-era which are great, and the remaining movies are TNG-VOY era with a TNG focus, but they aren't very good in comparison; they become more generic sci-fi action schlock the further you get.Avoid anything made after 2009 like the plague as it's either generic action schlock, or teen drama schlock. Proceed at your own risk.

We've talked about Trek a lot but I'm curious: what sort of stuff does /trek/ like outside of Star Trek? Name your top 5 non-Trek TV shows, don't necessarily need to put them in order, just 5 favorites. For me, it's>Deadwood>Twilight Zone>Batman: The Animated Series>The Sopranos>Three Kingdoms (2010)
>>214149285Rankings are for people with really narrow experience IMO. I can't possibly name my top 5.
>>214149285Stargate's pretty good. I don't really watch TV anymore and I can't really recall enough about all the TV I've ever watched to put it into a tier list
>>214149230>t. schizo, do not listen
>>214149302There's no numerical value assigned there. Just pick 5 favorites that give an idea of the spectrum of your taste, anon. It's not hard, nor the premise for an autistic argument.
>>214149110Yah borg queen idea sucks I agree, but the depicition of the borg proper was spot on.
>>214149188
>>214149224I did notice your almost contempt of proper capitalization though.
>>214149285My favorite author of all time is Philip K. Dick. So I tend to like the weirder episodes of Star Trek, the ones where they're not even sure what they're dealing with and have to reach beyond themselves for the answers. One example that came to mind is the TAS episode "The Magicks Of Megas-Tu", where Spock manages to take logic to an entirely different level.
>>214149377that's just my affectation that I will admit to you i do on purpose
>>214149341Cool but you did say top 5 originally
>>214149328whoops wrong reply
>>214149110Why is the Borg queen "inherently" a bad idea? It seems to be almost literally modeled after eusociality in animals, it's not farfetched at all. The only real problem with it I see is just that it isn't the way they were initially introduced, and autistic nerds hate change.
>>214149411
>>214149328>no evidence, no argument, just an ad hominem attackYou are so unlike Trek. How can you possibly be a fan?
>>214149427NTA but the Borg Queen sucks because she puts a face on the faceless other -- and it's being a faceless other hivemind that made the Borg so different and interesting in the first place. It made them alien. Now, it's just some actress emoting. Huge downgrade.Sorry if your taste is so terrible that you don't get that.
>>214149457You can post a sarcastic gif but you literally said one thing and then said another
>>214149491I think you really might have autism. I'm going to stop replying to you now. Enjoy your night.
>>214149427it turns the mindless eldritch horror hivemind bent on consumption for consumption's sake which was originally a cautionary tale for conformism into an ant colony
>>214149476Wasn't that the Borg's intention with Locutus? Seems like they've done it before & you didn't complain about it then.
I like drinkingI like my brosI like /trek/
>>214149476>>214149522Yeah but like... It still consumes? And human-sized ants WOULD be terrifying? It doesn't really same to change their motives or evil at all to me.
>>214149519You said list your top 5 as in your top favorite 5 shows. I said that was too difficult, Then you said just list 5 shows to give an idea of a spectrum of taste. That's a completely different things.
>>214149556Locutus was just a guy who talked to individuals, a point of interface. He wasn't King of the Borg.
>>214149556at the time of BoBW before the borg were flanderized, locutus was a tool, a mouthpiece to facilitate the assimilation of the federation. he wasn't a leader, he didn't have a command role, as the borg don't have a traditional hierarchy. that's why nobody complains about locutus.the borg queen is not a tool to be used, she is explicitly the leader, and the collective does her bidding. you kill her, you effectively cripple the borg, which makes them like any other antagonist faction to be dealt with
Gotta say I'm enjoying SNW's aesthetic. I'm sure some oldtrek geezer will find a reason to hate it, but they've given up their game—they hate first, and seek to justify it after the fact. Pretty uncreative.>>214149627Still, he wasn't a faceless horror like the rest of the Borgl
>>214148501Avery Brooks objected to the episode because blacks weren't allowed in casinos back in the 60s.Vic Fontaine: "Woah there Julian, I don't mind you bringing your spaceman friends to the show; but this is a reputable joint I can't have you bringing a bunch of niggers in here."
If you kill the Borg Queen then another is made. So I don't know what you're talking about.
>>214149672No, the Borg Queen was the personification of the hive mind. That's not the same as being a leader. And what evidence do you have that killing her would cripple the Borg? Presumably, the strength of a hive mind is that she could instantly be replaced by a suitable drone.
>thread #29474939 where the butthurt nutrek faggot cries about how he's being genocided or whatever
>>214149727Yeah and did you know Star Trek actually sucks so it's okay for Lower Decks to suck?
>>214149672The death of the Borg Queen, while traumatic to drones in the immediate vicinity, did not seem to permanently affect the Collective or its hive mind as a whole. The Queen was subsequently replicated after each death, although the exact mechanism of her reincarnations remains unclear. Borg drones were capable of functioning without a Queen for any length of time by forming a Hive mind of their own. (Star Trek: First Contact; VOY: "Unity", "Dark Frontier")
>>214149685>I'm sure some oldtrek geezer will find a reason to hate itThat shot looks good. Kind of a cleaned up version of the original series style. The engine core looks too big; but aside from that its fine.Strange New Worlds still sucks though because half its episodes are musicals or comedy nonsense.
>>214149758It looks like shit, anon. It looks like 2009 JJ Trek. Way too shiny, way too sleek for the time period, ridiculously proportioned. Does not look like it's made for humans to interact with which gives it a feeling of uncanny valley.
>>214149791Yeah, I see your point. The console looks good; but that's about it.

Killing the Borg Queen has a temporary and localizing effect, causing disorientation and a loss of coordinated direction for drones in the immediate vicinity. >>214150301Distributed via the queen, and her dying. Otherwise Future!Janeway would've just infected any drone instead of specifically going for the queen. The point that you keep missing on purpose because you're arguing in bad faith is that the plot keeps relying on there being a command hierarchy to the borg, which makes them like any other generic villain faction.
>>214150159The movie was basically two unrelated story pitches mashed together, and it really feels like it. After the initial Borg attack there's virtually no overlap between the events on the ship and on the ground. But I like that, because the Zefram Cochrane stuff is closer to TNG comfiness and doesn't get interrupted by the action schlock on the Enterprise. Some fans hate that that they made Cochrane a drunk asshole but his character has a clear positive arc that I quite like.

>>214150303The acid was in one room, there were more borg on the ship than just the ones on the bottom floor of engineering.>>214150319The ones in the past were insulated by time-traveling. It's the same reason the Enterprise crew wasn't affected by the borg assimilating Earth in the past. The ones in the present all exploded and weren't ever heard from again, not until hacks retconned them to still being alive because they needed an iconic villain to steal. Try watching Star Trek some time.

>>214151210The plot is absolute nonsenseI love Picard/Spock/Data interacting and Riker's detective B plot but the whole "Sela is going to invade Vulcan (as if anyone wouldn't notice)" thing that also just sort of fizzles out is lame
>>214151235I always assumed Denise Crosby left the show over sexual harassment from the executives. The cover story, that she was unsatisfied with her character's growth after LESS THAN A SEASON, never came across as believable.
>>214151246Jelico is chain of command my guy. Spock is fine in unification. I like the whole idea that he’s working with the Romulan underground and I love old dying Sarek in TNG, but Denise Crosby as Yar’s half Romulan daughter was always dumb as fuck imo.
>>214150951Waltz is great but I don't like how it makes Dukat obsessed with Sisko in specific when he hasn't been before. he wanted his approval and respect but after Waltz he literally thinks of Sisko as some kind of literal God he has to defeat which is totally dumb. it's just not motivated by anything that actually makes sense. you can say it was Ziyals death that made him snap but he literally lets Damar off the hook for it and blames Sisko for "guiding his hand." It's totally retarded

>>214155791
I want to introduce my mom to TNG (she was into sci-fi since teenage years, but for some reason hasn't watched anything Star Trek except The Motion Picture, which she enjoyed, and I believe TNG would be right up her alley), but I want to show her the abridged version of first two seasons, so she could faster transition to actual good stuff. Here's my list:S1E1 - Encounter at Farpoint — where it all begins, also introduces Q;S1E5 - Where No One Has Gone Before — introduces The Traveler;S1E10 - Haven — introduces Lwaxana Troi;S1E12 - Datalore — introduces Lore;S1E17 - Home Soil — one of the few episodes of TNG that can be actually considered hard sci-fi (even if isn't particularly shines in that regard);S1E19 - Heart of Glory — makes Worf a character instead of glorified extra he was beforehand;S1E25 - The Neutral Zone — establishes Romulans as a significant threat;S2E3 - Elementary, Dear Data — a decent Holodeck episode with lasting repercussions;S2E8 - A Matter of Honor — another foray into Klingons;S2E9 - The Measure of a Man — well, this is a classic one;S2E15 - Pen Pals — great Prime Directive episode;S2E16 - Q Who — WE ARE THE BORG;S2E20 - The Emissary — introduces K'Ehleyr, also fun and memorable episode overall. Are there any other episodes that you would recommend? I have also purposefully omitted certain season 1 episodes, like The Last Outpost (which introduces the Ferengi, but isn't that sort of introduction actually harmful?), Skin of Evil (sure, they kill Tasha Yar there, but do we actually need to see her death? Besides, the episode itself is godawful, literally no one should suffer through it) and Conspiracy (while it is somewhat enjoyable, it doesn't feel particularly Star Trek-y and I believe can be safely avoided), but maybe I'm wrong: after all, last time I rewatched TNG myself was like 8 years ago, so my Klingon's a little rusty too.
>>214156034I liked Peak Performance for its development of Riker and Data. Especially Data.
>>214156097I had to look it up, because I don't remember it at all. But yeah, it is a decent enough small episode, besides, it can actually serve as an introduction to the Ferengi.

>>214161549If you want to check out Lower Decks, I highly recommend the episodes "weJ duJ" (which shows lower-deck officers on several other ships), "Hear All Trust Nothing" (which is set on DS9), and "I, Excretus" (where the crew gets put through a Starfleet evaluation). As for SNW, you can just begins at the beginning—it starts off strong. I powered through the first 2 seasons of DIS and was thoroughly unimpressed, so you can skip that with my blessing. I tried, but couldn't get into VOY, ENT, or DS9, so feel free to skip those too.
