any oldfags on here that remember when FOX started broadcasting?
>>
Kinda. I remember it being the "edgy" station and we weren't allowed to watch shows that were on it for awhile.
>>
Yes, when it first started it only had infomercials, local news, Married... with Children and this awesome show called Werewolf.

I remember when they hired Joan Rivers to do a tonight show rip off on the new FOX network. It was a huge story at the time because Joan was a frequent guest host on the NBC tonight show and Carson was seething. Then the show was cancelled and Joan's husband Edgar who was her manager and she often mentioned in stand up comedy committed suicide because he though her career was over.

And The Simpsons. Can't forget that little show that nobody thought would succeed. Who'd want to watch a cartoon in primetime? Well apparently a lot of people did. And still do.
>>
yeah. at first, they were really pushing the Tracey Ullman Show to be the flagship show, but it wasn't very good. Married With Children and 21 Jump Street were also from that first season and they were the ones that caught on.

Joan's show was fairly good, but the game changer was when they cancelled it and gave that time slot to Arsenio Hall, which was a real cultural phenomenon for a while. he wasn't particularly good at interviewing, but his style and energy was contagious and he had great guests no other shows even thought about i.e. guests popular with the youth and black people.

it wasn't on in the first season, it was just shorts during the Tracey Ullman Show. then they had him make a Simpsons Christmas special that ended up being the pilot episode and the show started the season after that Christmas. can't remember if it was the second or third year Fox was on the air, but as a sitcom it wasn't one of the original shows

The Simpsons debutted in 1989 , three years after Fox Launched and started as filler for The Tracy Ullman Show before that. Not sure if that was a launch series.

>Arsenio Hall, which was a real cultural phenomenon for a while
Whenever I watch Aladdin, I always wonder how many people actually get the Arsenio reference Robin Williams dropped in as the genie. That really was a moment in time that's largely been forgotten but he was huge back then.
