>rewatching the sopranos>Livia is still aliveThank god her actress died or this show would have been a forgotten wet shit. Imagine 6 seasons of this goofy bitch and Tony being a Freudian head case like the show was originally envisioned. Her sub plots are such trash it makes the first two seasons borderline skippable, you could easily hack job through all of her parts and miss nothing.
Seasons 1 and 2 were the only good seasons specifically because of Livia. Without Livia the entire conceit of the series fell apart along with David Chase's plan for the series, and the narrative never recovered. > Tony being a Freudian head case like the show was originally envisionedHe kept being one the entire show, retard.
>>214172802>>214172845I actually really like the way it turned out. I'm glad she was there for the first two seasons to give the audience a really clear idea of the mind rape childhood Tony must have had with her, and then her abruptly dying with no closure felt like the most impactful way to end their relationship. The final three seasons are sort of the aftermath of his mother's death, with Tony growing into a similar version of her by the end.
>>214172845If that cunt hadn't kicked the bucket this show would be a forgotten novelty like Taxi. Remember Weeds? Yeah me neither.
>>214172874>final three seasonsIt's effectively 5 seasons, seasons 3,4,5,6a and 6b, without Livia and they're all a complete directionless mess because Chase had no idea what to do without Livia and never did. He created the series entirely to complain about his mother. When Nancy Marchand died the whole core of the series was thrown out. >>214172901Weeds was just an attempt at a family friendly Sopranos, Sopranos was a huge hit before it even existed.
>>214173306I don't think it's "directionless." Season 3 is a bit rough at times, because they had to do last minute rewrites when Marchand died and the season was originally meant to heavily focus on Livia, so it does sort of spin its wheels a bit for awhile. Overall, though, I like that the show isn't super plot-focused like Breaking Bad for instance, gives the characters more room to breathe. Sopranos is a character-driven "slice of life" (hate this term, but it applies). It's just about the day to lives of the characters more than it is a cliffhanger type of show.
>>214173437Theme and characters are at a constant battle where usually in literature theme wins and in film character wins as general rules. In the sopranos if Livia hadn't actually died and the entire show had been thematic it would have been DOG. SHIT. Characters absolutely bodied theme in the sopranos and it was unironically a good thing. If chase wanted to see his gay therapy session to the end he should have written a book nobody would read.
>>214172845imagine being this wrong about anything ever lmao
>>214173563I think the theme of the show is identity (and the confusion surrounding it) and the characters all embody it really well.
Wasn’t Livia the conniving wife of Augustus and mother to Tiberius? Character’s name is kinda on the nose…
>>214173437>so it does sort of spin its wheels a bit for awhile.I definitely does, just look at how they recycle Sean and Matt's plot arc for Jackie Jr's plot in season 3. It's like a copy paste job and it's only one season later. >the show isn't super plot-focused like Breaking BadIt becomes that way after Livia dies, because the show runner, Chase, has no coherent plot ideas after Nancy Marchand dies. Season 1-2 are much tighter plot wise while by season 5 they were rewriting the plot during production because they had no idea where they wanted to go with it. And that was despite them consistently having multiple years between seasons.
>>214173563> If chase wanted to see his gay therapy session to the endThe themes do contiue the entire show, you just didn't notice that Chase kept putting in cheap stand ins for Livia like Janice (brought back with plot nonsense despite being written out in season 2) or Gloria.
>>214174047And it forced him to adapt. Livia was a dogshit insufferable character and if the show had orbited her for the entire run it would be completely forgotten. Having his plans go sideways at the worst moment is what made it good. In fact the events surrounding the show almost mirror the show in that regard. It was graced b y the universe itself.
>>214174100Nta but it sounds like you have mommy issues. Livia is cute and funny
>>214174199What a strange bait post. I almost believed that you saw that phrase and repeated it without understanding. 6/10
>>214174100Livia's a great character, she's supposed to be insufferable so the idea you think that's a flaw means you missed the point. In fact you probably would have liked the original end for her character, Tony suffocating her to death,
>>214174992>she's supposed to be insufferable>it's supposed to taste like shit!cmon. it's not like a skyler situation where she just sucks but no one wanted 3 more seasons of that and it was ultimately good for the show
>>214175073Skyler is supposed to just be annoying. Livia is supposed to be an evil overbearing mother who ruined her son and is a black cloud who ruins every social interaction she participates in. It's a difference of degree, but yes she is intended to be an awful and expecting every character on screen to be likeable is childish.
damn what a terrible take, literally a top five character
