I find people who debate "great movies" and then fight amongst themselves over Predator, BttF, SW, and so on, to be legitimately braindead. It'd be like debating great literature and bringing up your favourite capecomic run. Each genre can be great for what it is, but pretending that Pop Culture Schlock of any kind is on on the level of objective greatness, is downright moronic. I have a collection of comics, games, figures and so that's upwards of 50K and I wouldn't show up to Book Club with my favourite X-Men issue. But somehow people say things such as "Indiana Jones is a great film!" and mean it wholeheartedly. It just boggles the mind.

i like occasional slop. i cannot imagine being the sort of guy who only consumes "high art"
>>
Film is a pleb medium, it's supposed to appeal to the lowest common denominator via fast cuts and edits, loud, manipulative music and sounds, flashing images, choreographed action etc. It's not a medium for high art. Remember when they introduced talkies many said this would destroy acting forever, and they were right.
>>
>>214192638
Film is a different medium, and many people see movies as a concept to be interchangeable with Hollywood blockbusters. They are the most popular form that movies are consumed in. All the movies you listed are actually great as well. As a medium, movies that can pull of what Star Wars and Back to the Future did are legitimately artful in their execution. That said, I also get extremely tired of overgrown chuds on 4chan spamming Star Wards and LotR threads discussing the same handful of topics every day. It's actually embarrassing how seriously grown men take such things, to the point of arguing over lore and such. Doing so should make you an involuntary candidate for euthanasia.

All of the Indiana Jones original trilogy films are excellent. I'm not even talking about plot, you need to observe how visually interesting they are. Notice the staging and framing, the camera movement, the cuts. They are works of art on par with David Lean films.

This. Any art form without an extremely high barrier to entry is pleb tier. This is true of hobbies as well.

Like the movie lord of the rings? It's not even the best adaptation someone could've made. The books are still better.

Yeah bro, I remember back in 1927 when they introduced talkies. Worst year of my life, or at least that's what I thought at that time, then I had to live through the great depression.

You are a dumb charlatan trying to get 4chan upcummies before you go back to your tranny discord. You're a faggot, a retard and you're gay as well. Fuck you.

Anime > jewish 80s blockbusters

The fact you don't like anime means you're so far beneath me that further interaction is out of the question.

I do like anime, and '80s blockbusters. I still acknowledge them as manchild shit if consumed exclusively.

Spielberg is fucking boring. Kershner isn't that exciting either. Schwarzenegger is a walking cartoon with an IQ to match. Imdb Top 250 filmbro flick worship culture is nothing but a disease.

Cameron, as reading a little between the lines should have made obvious, but only when his work isn't being spoiled by the likes of DiCaprio and Schwarzenegger.

Believe it or not, it's not so much about the particular flavor of not cookie-cutter, as it's about being not cookie-cutter.

The key to finding something that isn't butt crust is having a personality. Explore what you like and then explore what else the people behind it have made.

Sounds like he's baiting. LOTR movie versions were all very dry on the character interaction. Read the novels to experience the soul of the story. The cartoon Hobbit had more soul than all the new movies combined. Likewise, Jaws has soul. The characters are living, breathing beings. They don't robotically plod about on their quest hitting the same note for hours on end. The sun even shines sometimes. It must be the reliance on CGI holding back movies from 2000 and later.

>Schwarzenegger is a walking cartoon with an IQ to match.
The Governator himself is pretty smart. He moved to a different continent, became a world celebrity, made a bunch of money BEFORE his film success, AND became the governor of a large American state. He's gotta have a 120 IQ at least, kid.

Hot Shots part deux is the best movie ever made, I think we can end the thread here
>>
at what point did pop culture art (film/music) become more of a business venture than an artistic venture?
>>
>>214195733
people do need to avoid using any form of "objective" unless the term is absolutely required. It's a sign they don't know what they're talking about.

Jaws is significantly better than any fantasy movie.
>>
>>214195874
clearly by about 2010, as the number of genuinely decent films in the 2000s was still comparable to the 70s-90s. After about 2010 it's dropped way off, with business people/executives/etc. fumbling around with the creative aspects, although there are a lot of other factors making recent movies shit too

Because you're a retard. Don't think too hard about such things, it's not for you.
>>
>>214192638
It is kind of funny that back in the day some contemporary reviewers said that Jaws was like a big budget B movie and people bemoaned the creation of the blockbuster as dumbing down the cinema. And now Jaws is considered a classic and people are back moaning about current movies.

This but with Star Wars and I'm glad the franchise has been hammered into the dirt. The first three are a scifi masterpiece but they caught lightning in a bottle and should've left well enough alone. People needed to move on 40 years ago.
>>
>>214196606
anyone who doesn't appreciate the original star wars needs to watch Silent Running which was made around the same time and it looks like they filmed lego's hanging from string, because that's exactly what it was.

>appeal to hype
This is why people are fucking exhausted. No one shares why they personally enjoyed it, they share hype, and with hype, people appeal to the authority of something. So if you watch one of these things and don't enjoy it, people act like it is a grievous sin. Overrated as a term is overused because people are constantly running into hype bubbles and being told you must like this or that, so people begin hating and distrusting everything because people don't place a movie in proper context, they overhype it. Other people just burn out and go back to comfort viewing.

Yeah Lord of the Rings was a big successful trilogy based on very influential books, I'd rather someone tell me why they like it because I just hate the appeal to the hype bubble. At this point people just repeat the same things. There is a reason why the "Aragorn broke his toe in that scene" became a fucking meme amongst Lord of the Rings fans because obnoxious people with their "interesting" facts have to spring it on you, no real opinion or analysis, just regurgitation and knee jerk responses to scenes. All fandom is the same thing, like a basic fucking algorithm of responses ready to be loaded up and go. The consumerism of nerd culture is insane.
