I love the Gunn and his DC Gunn Runn (TM). However he is human and fallible. Yet when I read the vast litany of animosity and malicious hate toward the man, it’s always…Vague. Imprecise. Just wishy washy Internet hate words. He’s Hollywood sicko, pedo, manchild, etc. What are the ACTUAL deficiencies of his storytelling? In exact terms, with surgical language, what are the things he does not do well? What are the things you truly don’t like about either the man or his work? Insult him with low effort bantz sure, but I make this thread because it’s gotten so, boring. Like, eh. I am holding this space my kweens to actually slay and elucidate your articulate opinion on the Gunn.
It's not a Gunn thing in general, but the Superman script was very clearly a first draft rushed into production so you get things like Lex explaining why he hates Superman to the Engineer and the Engineer explaining to Lex that's why she let him transform her body with nanites even though they obviously already know this about each other
>>214198731It was too goofy. Metropolis is constantly being traumatized by monsters and it's played off as a joke, which lowers the stakes and gives it a cheap feeling.
>>214198620I generally dislike Gunn's more comedic approach to the subject matter, but also agree with the film's message overall, so it was a 7 to me. As for the person himself, nothing against him really.
>>214198620He's sometimes too in love with his dumb humor, most seen in GOTG2. But i would say Superman is his most balanced film, tone-wise.
Needs to go back to writing, this proved he cant direct worth a shit. And he needs to stick to his little team up movies and not make a Superman movie into a team movie.
>>214199221He at least knew which scenes not to put any jokes in. There was nothing funny about Lex capping a random dude purely to upset Superman.
>>214198620Past a certain age, an elderly millennial still using hair product like a teenage fuckboy can be a bad thing.
>>214199459nah, the joke after he throws bizarro into the black hole took me completely out of the movie
he's incapable of writing a genuine standalone superhero movie without a bunch of side characters, who all conveniently happen to be snarky jerks so he can write them in a way he's comfortable with.
>>214199191His style allows big moments to stand out more like Clark with Pa Kent or Lois talking to Superman on how he sees everyone as good. It’s how he made more people care about a talking tree dying in GOTG then Superman dying in BvS
I'm still trying to understand what the real FIRST product of his universe was.Flash was "THE FIRST GUNNVERSE RELEASE" that you had to watch because it caused the reboot.Blue Beetle was advertised as "THE FIRST GUNNVERSE RELEASE" because it was the first post-reboot movie. Then Creatures Commandos was "THE FIRST GUNN-WRITTEN GUNNVERSE RELEASE"Then Superman was "THE ACTUAL FIRST CHAPTER OF THE GUNNVERSE"And the second chapter would be Peacemaker Season 2, so would that make S1 retroactively the first Gunnverse chapter...? Or maybe The Suicide Squad?
The hate is manufactured, that's why. It's jeets, bots, and fox news was mad the movie was woke or something.
>>214199608all slop
>>214199608Superman. Everything is retconned around that movie.
>>214199608It’s Creature Commandos. TSS, Peacemaker Season 1 and Blue Beetle aren’t canon themselves, only some events in them.
>>214199627>>214199719>not even Gunnfags can agreeI'm so glad having a single vision at the top makes things so much more coherent
>>214199748lmao
>>214199608Then Creatures Commandos is considered the first Gunnverse movies. Rest before it were made or already in development before Gunn took over. The Flash movie was in development since 2018 but with Covid delays. It was suppose to come out October 2020
>>214198620this is like asking people to judge Hitler for his art
>>214198620Tell, don’t show approach. He started his Superman movie with the Star Wars-style opening crawl. Too much exposition/infodumps. Zero funny jokes. Shit action and that’s par for the course for Gunn. Casting mid old actresses. Zero stakes and the least threatening villain. Gunn is wrong director for the Superman movie. $363 million production budget and Gunn couldn’t beat MoS inflation unadjusted. Just too funny.
>>214199939no it isn’t
>>214199459>Killing an Indian. >Not funny.
>>214198620He doesn't know how to write male characters. They're always whiny faggots or retarded dolts. Sometimes both. Gamora and Rocket were his only two well written characters because girl boss and furry. Seriously name one (1) male character from his superhero slop that is well written.
>>214200198Same spammed Snyder jeet takes. Too dumb and lazy to even try to reward it
>>214200300He doesn't know how to write masculine characters.FTFU. With the exception of Youndu. He is a great masculine character and Rooker was excellent. His death was one of the rare cases when the MCU movie had stakes.
>>214200300> He doesn't know how to write male characters.
>>214200398Yes, by male I of course meant masculine. The reason I avoided masculine as a term is that it describes characters like gamora or nebula. He writes women to be more masculine than men. Yondu isn't a whiny faggot, but he is a retarded dolt.
>>214200453Just say you never read conics and have no idea what you’re talking about. Starlord is exactly how he is in the comic. He’s a dork
>>214200523We're talking about movies. Not comics. I refuse to believe every male character in the comics Gunn adopted was a pussy.
>>214200587Star-Lord wasn’t a dancing retard in the comics. That’s ironically Gunn’s influence.
>>214200587Characters are exactly how they are in the comics. Bloodsport wasn’t a pussy.
Feels like your thrown in the middle of the adventure and nothing is fully developed, not the themes or side characters.
>>214199608It’s obviously the suicide squad and I’m confused why people are confused. it’s not rocket science, or even science of any kind
>>214198731I highly doubt it was a first draft, instead it was unfortunately spoon feeding the audience the plot. What you would call tell vs show.
>>214200666That was so out of character for him
>>214199608>Flash was "THE FIRST GUNNVERSE RELEASE" that you had to watch because it caused the reboot.Gunn had pretty much next to nothing to do with that movie.
Everyone talks about Guardians of the Galaxy in the Superman thread. That’s kinda telling.
>>214198731fpbpI adore superman 2025 and is one of my favourite films. but there is exactly one individual shot that is actually bad. genuinely bad. when the engineer turns to lex and says blah blah blah that’s why j nanomachined myself, before she hacks the computer to steal the el’s message. that lone shot does read like first draft
>>214200778no it’s a The Gunn thread. and that’s what makes us labubu
>>214198620Turning Superman's parents into eugenicist freaks that expected their son to conquer the earth and make himself a harem was beyond retarded. I feel like Superman writers these days are terrified of playing the Superman story straight so they just rip off Superman's evil rip offs
>>214198731The movie gave me the feeling that she's not human anymore, just an ex-human that turned into a nanites machine.
>>214198620Gunn needs a tardwandler that can tell him that raunchy and vulgar comedy is not everything in a movie. This speech was unironically decent but Gunn didn't let the message breathe. He also over corrected with Superman and his weak moments. He shows he did a decent job but he needs someone to tell him when he goes full GUNN. Also its clear with the Engineer his plan at first was with the Authority but they told him it didn't fit yet.
This felt like a TV show and not a movie.
>>214198620Superman wasn't even a Gunn movie. It felt like Gunn trying to make a movie that wasn't a Gunn movie and failing miserably.
>>214198620James gun was the wrong person to make a superman movie.
>movie has a massive exposition dump wall of text openingRed flag already
>>214198731>awkward text exposition dump >feels like it starts at act 2>superman intervening in not-palestine, arguably his most important moment, is entirely off-screen>in general, the movie is full of tell, don't show>Opening scene is a drawn out bit of superman getting his ass beat, getting healed then getting his ass beat again>immediately reveals that the Hammer of russia-stan is a lex luthor false flag instead of building some mystery>Clark has no real reaction to ultra man being his clone
>>214201489thank you for contributing but none of these are technically legitimate criticisms, they’re just things you don’t like. which is fair
Civilians just gawked at fights like a bunch lemmings unless Superman told them to evacuate. Jimmy Olsen was a self-insert for manlets. Portrayed superficial versions of pocket dimensions, black holes, etc. that abide by whatever clown logic will make the plot work. Clunky exposition dumps as others have pointed out. Lex Luthor's team cheering Superman on as if they didn't want his blood 10 seconds before.
I can't get over how this movie tries to overcompensate from every fickle criticism of MoS. >Superman didn't save enough people. So now you have him save anyone and everyone, which is fine, except he spends so much time doing it that I can't help thinking "why is the giant monster not doing anything? Why is it waiting for Superman to be done saving people?" Or when they escape the pocket universe "why are Lex's goons not immediately killing the stupid baby when it's obvious Superman is up to something?" It hits you like a wall and grinds all the action to a halt. Like ok cool. I guess all the bad guys are just gonna politely wait for Superman to do his thing.
>>214198620>What are the ACTUAL deficiencies of his storytellingThe villain's not threatening, Superman's dog beats him up as a joke.
>>214201282It wasnt a wall of text you retard it was 1 line at a time and there was only like 4 lines and it was clever how it used the number 3 to count down 3 centuries 3 decades 3 years 3 minutes it made my ripples hard you're a fucking idiot for not appreciating the cleverness of the countdown (you obviously didn't even watch the movie)
>>214202345most people will not recognize this as sarcasm
>>214198620Gunn has never made a bad movie, but Gunn humiliated Cavill and ruined Snyder’s vision by taking away the Snyderverse.
>>214198620James Gunn is literally an admitted child molester who was literally fired for pedophilia.
It was understandable with Guardians, but every Gunn cape project has relied on needle drops where an original score would have sufficed/done better. It's gotten lame, and Superman definitely shouldn't have been yet another Gunn jukebox movie.
Bad CGI, armor clipping.
>>214199510Im coming for your women.
after watching camrip: 3//5 stars for meafter watching it again HD: 2/5 , kek
so fucking bland most of the time, too much brightness in scenes, not enough depth in colors, wtf gunn? your "style" is pure trash
>>214201715>Asks feedback. >Gets feedback. Throws a butthurt tantrum. Not him btw.
>>214202339
>>214198620>I dont like how all his mcs are heavily into music.
I dont like how all his mcs are heavily into music.I dont like his style of comedic writing that interrupts a serious scene in a show.
>>214199131the main characters make jokes because they've been in tons of situations like that. people in the background aren't as freaked out as in marvel because it's normal for the world already.you're just being contrary.
>>214198620I'm not that fond of his style, but that's subjectiveTechnically speaking is a functioning, nothing special novie. no particular flaw, no particular praise. It's still the best Superman live action stuff made since the 80s, and the first non shit DC content since Nolan left and comics rebooted in 2011
>>214200198Obvious sore loser snydertard is ovbiousSnyderverse never ever
>>214199459He was actually had to cut a stupid joke in that scene where Lex freaked out over getting the dude's blood on his shoes. Look it up.Gunn literally does not have one sincere bone in his body.
>>214200872It's not as bad as evil/asshole superman we have seen in ages, since at least doesn't change Superman itself, but it was still a stupid change. The twist works for the story, technically, but fuck those changes to established characters
>>214203633That whole action scene was retarded and I've refuse to believe nobody died after being mauled, lasered in the face and falling from the height of the empire state building without a parachute.
>>214200374That were all accurate critiques
>>214200300Frank from super
>>214205471Nerds think if you don't explain exactly why a fight scene looks bad or exactly why a dumb story is retarded that you're not making "technical" critiques.
>>214205471>OP asks actual criticism>retard posts subjective rant
>>214203359>but Gunn humiliated Cavill never happened, and Cavill was never good>and ruined Snyder’s vision by taking away the Snyderverse.Snyder ruined snydershit, and universal rejection and derision dismantled Snyder's "vision"
>>214205944No, they weren't>>214205977Retards think throwing tantrums is critiquing
>>214201715Anon, show don't tell is literally a literary tropes taught to grade schoolers. If a film from a Hollywood director relies on the opposite, this breaks nearly every good practice in story telling. >Exposition dump with text >Exposition dump with "interview"He spent 20-30 minutes telling the audience what transpired instead of showing them. This is objectively bad.
This is considered subjective by gunnjeets now lmaohttps://en. wikipedia.org/wiki/Exposition_(narrative)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Show,_don%27t_tell
>>214201489Have some sympathy, please. Those narrative devices are insensitive toward ESLs>In 2017, Vietnamese-American writer Viet Thanh Nguyen questioned the validity of continuing to teach "show, don't tell" in creative writing classes in a New York Times op-ed on the subject.[25] His position was that such teaching is biased against immigrant writers, who may describe emotions in ways readers from outside their culture might not understand, rendering "tell" necessary.[26][27]
>>214200872>expected their son to conquer the earth and make himself a harem was beyond retarded. I feel like Superman writers these days are terrified of playing the Superman story straight so they just rip off Superman's evil rip offsHello Brainiac, did you just hack the engineer? Maybe yes maybe no. Anyway Zod and his company believed the same principle of conquering other planets, so actually nothing new when it come to the likes of Invincible or similar. Even in Frank Miller's Dark Knight III the kryptonians become invaders because of some old criticism towards this species...After reading daily threads here, where it was literally disliked because it hasn't dark blue filter on screen, there isn't Cavill and Superman isn't a stone god rivaling with Goku, I liked superman 2025 more than I expected.I felt it's a good first story in DCU wth a lot of potential for future expansions, and a middle/balanced tone was the right choice. There were a lot of characters and I had doubts about their management in the story but actually Gunn made it work very well; they all have a clear key role, they are outlined enough and are different from each other. Maybe Perry would have better stay in the office and nothing else because for what he does he's too much around (and the actor has a very low screentime! I felt it wasn't necessary in most of scenes where he's in).The story is rich of events so it sn't boring at all and it runs smoothly. Some humor was another good choice to prevent the MoS effect by which the story is so serious that seriously at a certain point you seriously feel the characters are off the context.Corenswet is a good choice. Then you can say something about the costume. Well, no. While Cavill's one was intended to show how muscular and so how strong Superman can be (poor choice, gay and blocks your movements while acting) this new one is more true to the classic but still modern. It's a superhero movie about feelings and people, finally.
>>214198731>the Superman script was very clearly a first draftYes everything is a bit rushed, too much screen time for secondary characters like Jimmy Olsen or Lois Lane, the movie should be 90 mins long, he should have removed the Indian guy, it adds nothing to the plot, the monkeys are stupid too, and I hate the ending with the dog biting Luthor.
>>214198620Lex Luthor reveals news that Superman didn't come to Earth to protect but to rule over it with a harem of innumerable numbers of women. We are then never shown the massive line of women who would willingly join this harem of taking Superdick regularly. Very unrealistic.
>>214198620>I love the Gunn and his DC Gunn Runn (TM). However he is human and fallible. He's shit. Straight up.

>>214198620He can't write anything but whimsical ensemble movies and that wasn't the right model to kick off a new DC universe franchise. It ended up not being a very good Superman movie and not being a very good ensemble movie because writing everyone as le quirky anti-hero only works when the characters are quirky anti-heroes.
>>214201282>4 lines of text in sequence>MassiveI’d love to see you sit through a Star Wars opening.
I met Gunn at a showing of Super at a local arthouse cinema. He told me, "There's the exit. You can get the fuck out!"(Okay. It was actually part of a response to a question about if he ever worries about losing some of the audience with some more absurd and gross out scenes.)
>>214200769True, but he was on board with it and promoted it as an amazing film.
I thinn he loves his characters but forgets to make the audience love them. Not really a problem in superman but in peacemaker characters act like assholes and I am supposed to feel sympathy for them

I thought it was a solid 7/10. I like the themes, Lex was awesome, some cool action. Script could've used some ironing out and Supes getting his ass kicked got kind of exhasuting after a while.
