This. Lewis Carroll even made it more obvious in the sequel-story, to the point of it being referenced in the title: Alice literally enters Wonderland in that one by stepping into a mirror, i.e. by stepping into herself.
Wonderland is Alice's personal Mindscape. The characters she encounters are anthropomorphizations of her own traits, thoughts & internal conflicts, and the obstacles she overcomes are analogies for overcoming internal conflicts and growing from a child into a young adult.

You know this is an adaptation of a Victorian Era novel, right? Disney didn't make up a bunch of "randomness".
Hell, if anything, much of the plot structure of the Disney adaptation is more narratively coherent than a lot of the original novel.

It's fun and very surprising that Disney made this film.

The sheer animation on display in this movie hasn't been topped by anything a hundred years after it was made. It's lost art.

Wasn't the novel just math jokes?

Nah, Alice in Wonderland is full of genuinely clever jokes and wordplay.

That said, the Disney movie sucks. Watch this version, it's probably the best adaptation:

You are now aware the queen looks exactly like Fred Flintstone

In both stories Alice enters the wonderland by falling asleep and exits it by waking up. She is dreaming, exploring her own subconscious, who can only talk to her through symbolism. Analyzing and exploring one's subconscious through dreams is a way of growing up through individuation.
Read Jung for more if you are interested.

Rewatched this a few years ago after not having seen it in 20+ years. Thought it was weird how much better the animation got for the finale with the red queen. Felt like they spent 80% of the budget just on that. Even anime doesn't go that far in the saving the budget for an epic finale. It was really jarring.
