The black goo is an all purpose mutagen that can be used in a variety of ways.

The engineer in the intro sequence takes a sip of it in a ritual and his own body dissolving from the mutagen basically starts life on Earth.
Since it's so potent it can also be used as a bioweapon on existing lifeforms. Exposure to it seems to "converge" into a xeno-like lifeform which has a preset lifecycle.
Considering that the Engineers seem to function in a very ritualized way, it is likely they designed this mutagen on purpose with this dual function so it can both give life and be used to eradicate it.

Who's defending covenant? The other anon sais the xeno eggs were a natural product of the goo and I pointed out that what we see and are told in Covenant doesn't support that. I'm not praising the film, just making an objective statement about its plot points

As I am still looking for english subtitles I have not watched it yet but the quality is amazing both sound and picture are perfect above expectations
