Japan - 41
Korea - 5

Highest rated Japanese movies - Tokyo Story (4), Seven Samurai (10), Rashomon (24)

Highest rated Korean movies - Parasite (235), Oldboy (516), Memories of Murder (535)

the last 10 Korean movies I rated above 4 (out of 5) stars

Mandala (1981)
Sopyonje (1993)
Hero (2022)
Crush and Blush (2008)
Hot Young Bloods (2014)
Masquerade (2012)
Keys to the Heart (2018)
The Harmonium in My Memory (1999)

>>

there's only one internationally popular Korean film, a few TV shows but for films it's just the one
Japan has piles, even more if you count animation.
>>
>>214205318
again, there are historical reasons why Japan has more popular films internationally, doesn't mean korea doesn't have a bunch of good movies too. I've been watching a lot of good korean films from the 90s recently.
>>

Not 21st century Japan. Yeah, they have critically acclaimed movies, but the general populace doesn't know or care about them.

The history of being widely hated and suppressed for being on the losing side in the second world war? To this day there are powerful people trying to tear down anything Japanese over it.
>>
>>214205414
Japan democratized very fast and already by 1950s Japanese movies experienced international recognition.
Korea was poor and ruled by various dictators until the end of 1980s.
>>
As far as modern movies like post-2000, I prefer Korea by far. Japan used to make a lot of great stuff, but I everything I see from them post-2000 is either ridiculous live actors acting and fighting like they are anime characters, or bone-dry, meandering and up it's own ass. And then there's the obsession with high school being treated like a platform for deep philosophical melodrama. I swear I want to like Japanese movies but every since Kurosawa kicked the bucket it's been downhill. Korea makes tons of kinos, and they are masters of thrillers specifically. Some of the most intense movies I've ever seen in the genre were from them.

>who makes better movies?
Japan. Hands down. Korea is picking up the slack, but it still has a long way to go. And the trip will be longer if people keep overrating and overhyping hacks like Bong Joon Ho.
>does japan only have their classic or do their modern movies hold up again modern korean cimea?
I recently watched Drive My Car and thought it was brilliant contemporary cinema. Japanese cinema is alive and well. It still feels surprising, meaningful and stylish.
>are kdramas better than anime?
Not in my personal opinion, no. But that isn't exactly my war to wage. Regardless, Korean dramas are all slop while anime despite all the voluminous seasonal trash can still deliver great aesthetic experiences that punch way above the Korean media output.
>>
>>214204416

drive my car felt like it tried to pander to both east asian audiences and western critics for cannes+oscars
accolade hunting needs to be more subtle or i begin to question the integrity of the film, but i realize now in current year that it was giving nishijima practise for more international roles which in retrospect was great for him

As I said it's femslop. Pretty much all of them are formulated for them. Just because your grandma or mother watches it doesn’t mean everyone does. It's scope is just that limited. But I guess being an avid fan makes you think otherwise.
>>
>>214204181
As a japanophile I have to be honest and say that Korea is outdoing them . Japan hasn't made kino in quite some time. Lots of their stuff now is just J dramas and movie adaptations of said J dramas. Way more cheesy than the Korean counterparts
>>
>>214209732
I didn't pick on the overt accolade hunting. It didn't feel as Western as something like Perfect Days, which I was dissociating all throughout the movie. Perfect Days is like a cinematic chameleon, something pretending to be Japanese while being very clearly ocidental in both tone, style and substance, it's the fat gaijin tourist of Japanese cinema. I hate saying this of a Wenders film and of such an interesting collaboration as the Tokyo Toilet Project, but hey.

Drive My Car is based on a Murakami novel. And Murakami has been following Western trends for a very, very long time. I was aware of this so I had my expectations set appropriately. Maybe because of this, I was more receptive. I thought that Drive My car was splendid cinema and found it to be a very muted, quite experience while delivering mature, intense emotionality when needed.

You think you are talking about Korea vs Japan but no, you are actually talking about american politics and I'd say Korea already won it but that's pretty much it
>>
>>214209876
>When was the last time you saw Nips exporting any of their media that weren't anime?
NTA, but if you're delving into Korean cinema you're already fully immersed on a niche subculture. And assuming you're a discerning hobbyist, you are actively hunting for treasures. You should extent the same curiosity to the Japanese side. Japan doesn't have the wide international visibility it once had, nor it is the commercial giant it was, but it is still producing great cinema. You need to look for it.

Japan is on the level of countries like Italy and France. Korean movies were heavily censored by the government from like 1960 up until fairly recently. And even the ones from the 40's and 50's were aren't that highly regarded. No one thinks Korea has a rich cinematic culture or history. This is like comparing Scandinavian and African movies.

Most Koreans dislike Israel, but a subset of Koreans, mostly right wing boomers, who got infected by the amerigolem Judeo-Christcuck brainworm worship Israel (along with ameristan).

Most Japanese hate Israel and Jews.

Korea is mostly conservative, most people have negative views towards LGBT. LGBT media overall has little mindshare or market share.

LGBT stuff on the other hand is openly accepted in Japan, and is mostly common in media. People are mostly indifferent to that stuff.

>Burgerstan
Korean right wingers blindly worship that shit. All right wing protests always have an equal distribution of gook to burger flags.

Japanese are much more skeptical. Japanese historically wanted no amerigolem influence over their politics unlike Koreans (think Anpo protests and the anti-military base protests).

>who makes better movies?
Japan made countless amazing films from the late 40s to about the 2000s.

South Korea had an interesting film renaissance from the late 90s to about 2009, when their military dicatorship came down and they were able to make movies again. Unfortunately, what they did was just imitate western crime films. They did it very well but it was a very short renaissance. Once they ran out of crime movies to rip off after the 2000s, they basically stopped making anything interesting, outside of sporadic hits here and there (the last one being parasite).

Kdrama is utterly atrocious and is somehow even worse than modern anime. Every premise is completely derivative of something japan already did 20 years ago, except they take the premise and repackage it in a way that's exclusively aimed at women.

Korean cinema took off from the 90's, it netted some insanely kino films.

Japanese kinos I know of are all from before the 90's. Haven't watched many modern Japanese films but the few I saw were absolute dogshit with terribad acting.

Japan is still very dominant in the animation field, though.
>>
>>214221468
Most of the best Korean movies (Aimless Bullet, Oasis, Spring Summer Fall Winter, Castaway on the Moon, Peppermint Candy etc.) are not crime movies though, so what you're saying doesn't really make sense.

As for K-dramas, it's just a general term for series made in Korea and doesn't apply only to those shitty Rom-coms for women. There's plenty of good shows from Korea, like My Mister, Stranger, Kingdom, Moving etcetera.

The foreigners that have it tough here are the English teachers from the US and UK. The market is saturated so in most hagwon jobs they basically pay minimum wage + a shitty goshiwon to live in. This is a meaningless appeal to popularity. Yes, popular things are popular. We also know that the normals eat whatever slop is trendy and process it uncritically. That doesn't mean that Squid Game will have an inordinate cultural impact. In fact, that really doesn't seem to be the case at all.

This is what I imagine as well. South Korea while doing very well for itself in media, I think lacks cultural appeal that Japan has with its deep history and aesthetics. Unlike Japan, where anime and other media act as an entry point into Japanese culture, I get the impression that Koreaboos just kind of stick to the stuff they like to watch without much interest in the culture behind it

I've been on a Kiyoshi Kurosawa binge lately. Extraordinary contemporary director. Blue Spring is a 2001 cult classic that is also worth checking out, though you may find the teen angst a bit off-putting. Love Exposure is chaotic cinema at its finest, it's a positively exhausting marathon of mad film making with some rare and great qualities. Drive My Car was one of my favourite movies that I saw recently and I recommend it very highly if you're into this kind of quiet experimental cinema.

Japanese cinema is alive and well.

the best japanese movies are the height of cinema and the best korean movies are "good". Incidentally, the profits from Korean cultural exports are smaller than the anime market.
Korea can only become a hit on the back of Netflix and the American foundation.
Because it's "American Korean culture" and not authentic culture.

hallyu has been a thing all over the world, especially SEA for decades, sure the Netflix money wasn't there but you can't say it didn't have a widespread cultural appeal just because it wasn't in America. the Korean drama general on this board even pushes back on the homogenization and erasure of korean culture from kdramas that Netflix is doing.

Koreans can't even accept their asians eyes, they're too focused on trying to be White so they don't have time to make their own style

Japan is now the largest Plastic Surgery country in Asia. Its been booming and even Japanese plastic surgeons admit the Japanese have the most facial augmentation of the world.

You do realize times change, people change, and cultures change, yeah?
>>
Dumbasses missing out on kino because they want to believe Japan doesn't still make kino, they're trying to convince themselves it's true so they feel like they're not missing out, but they are.

you could say the exact same thing about the seething weebs in this thread that refuse to watch korean movies
>>
>>214247537
That's why I'm an enlightened centrist who watches both Weeb and Gook kino.
>>
>>214247579
Korea cinema simply doesn't have the history, and realistically we're not even talking about a 25 ish kind of period because korean cinema has fallen off hard in the past decade. I think Bong gets too much hate on /tv/ and Lee Chang Dong is one of the all time greats so I'm not a hater, but it's a scarce landscape these days, I'm still waiting on a new movie from the director of Maggie, that was a good recent one.
>>
>>214247712
it doesn't have as long a history sure but there are plenty of korean kinos from 1960-2010.
>>
>>214247746
can you name these kinos from the year 1960? give me some recommendations, include a short summary of each.
>>
>>214247779
from the 60s?
The Housemaid (1960)
Aimless Bullet (1961)
Bloodline (1963)
Late Autumn (1966)
Mist (1967)
Holiday (1968)
you can look them up yourself for descriptions
>>
>>214247779
I'll give you one, Obaltan (Aimless Bullet). An extremely depressing movie about live in post-war Korea.

>>
>>214248343
True, during the whole period of military dictatorship very few good movies were made in Korea compared to Japan. Though I would argue that the good movies that did come out during that period never got the appreciation they deserved, internationally at least. Until quite recently Japan was always much better at marketing itself to the world.

It's not an afro boy, it's an afro girl. They're extreme gyaru who have styled themselves after sub-Saharan Africans.

The film is Vampire Girl vs Frankenstein Girl.
Genuinely good film if you like B-movie silliness.
