Literally whats the difference between him and Richie. Same character except Ralph is just much better
>>
>>214209512
Ralphie is a loveable asshole. Richie is a sneering little dork of a man.
>>
>>214209512
They had some big differences.
Richie was basically entirely humourless and stern, whereas Ralphie was funny as fuck and constantly cracking jokes. Richie had a much harder time being a subordinate and was constantly trying to be #1, whereas Ralphie accepted his place in the family and was just doing his thing. Obviously they have the same plot purpose to some degree but their attitudes/vibes were completely different. The real "blatant copy-paste" job was with Feech in season 5, who was obviously just an older version of Richie and boring because of that. But no one can call Ralphie boring.
>>
>>214208717
late and stupid forever
>>
>>214209329
>we never got a scene with Phil and Ralph banting.
Instead of dragging out ralph another season as Tony's reluctant promotion causing all of his problems with New York until the end of the series. Instead we get the parade float in vacationland and Tony B going off the reservation.
>>
>>214208717
He was short, bald and insecure (proven by the fact he wears a hairpiece). Maybe 1% of the people that have these traits are good people but he certainly wasn't
>>
>>214209512
Richie is probably one of the worst or at least overrated characters in the show. Pretty bad performance from the actor and barely had a major impact in the overall plot of the show. Ralph is what Richie should have been.
>>
>>214209795
In general seasons 1-2 are basically trial-runs for peak Sopranos of seasons 3-6. Almost everything in the first two seasons is recreated but vastly better in later seasons.
>>
>>214209788
Even with the hairpiece that hairline is atrocious my goodness
>>
>>214209814
Which is why it confuses me why so many people consistently say season 2 is one of the best seasons. In reality its probably the worst season in the entire show, with Season 1 or 5 being the second worst. And Season 6 easily being the pinnacle of the show.
>>
>>214209753
Ralph in Season 5 with Phill and Feech would've been GIGAKINO!
>>
I HAVE COME TO RECLAIM ROME FOR MY PEOPLE
>>
>>214209512
Ritchie was completely delusional. Thought he was some sort of old school gangster that had done more than anyone else had, and that he deserved unwavering respect.
Ralphie knew his place, and understood who he was. And for all his flaws he was still able to adjust his behaviour, specifically around cocaine and even his lifestyle after his son was almost killed
>>
>>214209795
I think he's so overrated because The Jacket bit is argubly the funniest scene in the show. Outside of that episode, he was quite boring.
>>
>>214209852
Absolutely correct opinion.
Season 2 is by far the most boring seasons because it doesn't have the light-hearted, warm, Goodfellas-y vibe of season 1, but neither does it have the darker, more realistic and psychological elements of seasons-5-6. It's completely featureless, grey, dour and slow.
Season 6 is absolutely the best of the show from an artistic, thematic and storytelling perspective. I'd even go so far as to say that season 6 is the most influential season of TV history aside from Twin Peaks season 1, because practically every single serialised drama after 2007 takes elements that were popularised or created by Sopranos season 6. It's such a magnificent culmination of a decade of work before it. And visually it's gorgeous and rich compared to the relatively flat style of earlier seasons.
>>
>>214209914
That's the crazy irony of Ralphie's story, is that the moment he actually started being more responsible and respectable, is when he gets killed, over the most irrelevant bullshit reason, whereas all his insane unhinged shit in the past that far more warranted his death, he got away with.
>>
>>214208717
Let's be honest, no one here would want Morpheus as a fren.
>>
The more I think about Paulie the more I realise how many traits he shares with some of the most deplorable characters in the series.
He’s petty and spiteful like Livia
He’s delusional about his own importance like Ritchie
He’s full of himself and sometimes needlessly cruel like Ralphie (both killed civilians over a squabble that was their fault)
He’s a tattletale suckup like Big Pussy (to Johnny Sack instead of the feds, but still behind his boss’s back)
He’s even more vindictive than Phil. He also constantly brings up his woes repeatedly like Phil
But he gets a pass on all of that because he’s a loveable goofball
>>
>>214209978
Paulie is an absolute piece of garbage from a moral perspective, yes. But he's so insanely entertaining and funny that he just barely gets away with it, which is literally the reason why Tony doesn't kill him on multiple occasions.

>>
>>214210061
I mean, at least most other characters fucking despise her too, so it's not as if the show pretends she is likeable or good.
>>
>>214210061
Eh, she’s like Marie Schrader. The purpose of her character is to annoy you. It’s a world of evil murderers yet you find yourself hating the nagging Karen more than them for whatever reason.
That being said, Livia was by far the most entertaining character in the show. Every scene she was in I would get excited for just because of how loathsome she was. It’s a shame the actress died early on, as I think the dynamic with her and Tony stretching the whole series would’ve lead to kino in season 6

It makes me wonder if Tony would have been less and more morally reprehensible in season 6 if she was still around. His scenes with Junior tended to humanise him and maybe Livia would have done the same. I also wonder if we would have gotten a similar scene to the amazing final Junior scene in the nursing home.
>>
Oh shit!

That scene still gets to me. My grandfather suffered from dementia and it was heartbreaking. Hit a bit close to home with Junior not even remembering his own brother. By the end of my grandfathers life he didn’t even recognise my father

>>
>>214210180
Season 5 is really brought down by it's rushed main storyline with Blundetto. But it's also really elevated by some of the best episodes in the show (Cold Cuts, Test Dream, Long Term Parking, and maybe In Camelot as well)
>>
This is still by far the saddest scene in the show. My boy didn’t deserve this

>>
>>214210207
That final scene with Junior is probably one of the most underlooked scenes in the entire show. It's meant to show Tony came to an epiphany that this style of life was not worth it, but at that point he came to the realization far too late.
>>
>>214208717
Mother issues, like Tony
>>
>>214210244
For some reason I originally thought it was going to be Tony that was gonna kill Bobby. Honestly not too far fetched considering how cartoonishly evil Tony was becoming towards the end
>>
Ralphie had an angry, clouded subconscious. The weird sex stuff is indicative of abuse during childhood. He was angry because being very good at mob stuff didn't relieve his internal struggles. Once your inner voice decides that only death can set you free, it starts looking for a way to make it happen.

Other than mistreating and killing the hoah, what was so despicable that Ralph did on the regular that "everyone hated him"?
He did beat up the bouncer over nothing, but was he really that out of line from the rest of them?
Because with out him beating the girl to death, it be hard to single him out, or am I overlooking something?

The problem that the other crew have with him has nothing to do with Tracy, since none of them except Tony even gave a slight shit about her. It's more that they think his attitude/demeanor is too arrogant/obnoxious and that he questions orders too much.
>>
>>214210123
Marie Schrader was pretty tolerable, it was interesting to see how an average Karen like her reacted to the crazy events in the show. Janice on the other was just completely insufferable

His performance is great when Richie is doing mobster shit, but it's distracting when he's supposed to be interacting with other people. Like when he has coffee with Carmela or his engagement party with Janice. He acts like too much of a moody psycho for me to believe anyone would want to be alone with him or bring him to a social event. Joey Pants on the other hand is immediately funny and charismatic so I had no trouble believing he could hook up with Rosalie Aprile while getting pegged and beating hookers to death.

>Having no conversation skills besides turning everything into a joke.
>Not being able to tell when is the right time to joke and when it isn't.

Other members really liked his jokes when they landed right, he was probably the funniest character, his money earning was superb and he had no reason to not be a Capo earlier but he really just pissed everyone off.
Still the realest nigga. He would probably be the most powerful sopranos character if he were likeable and could shut his mouth.

He's the poster boy for middle-aged men with mommy issues just like Tony is the same for daddy issues, that's why they were such a good foil for each other. It goes beyond the sexual shit Tony discovers in that one ep. Seriously, I don't know why it isn't brought up more often, it's one of the longest implied jokes in the series.

It's wild that the mere suggestion of Junior eating pussy was enough to start a gang war in season 1 and yet the seemingly well-known joke that Ralphie got pegged caused no backlash at all despite being VASTLY worse.

>>
>>214208717

>>
>>214212311
According to Pantoliano Ralphie's trauma comes from being raped by his mother's boyfriend after his father died.
>>
>>214208717
If I remember correctly he didn't actually do anything wrong at all, going by the rules for the gangsters anyway. By anyone else's he's a complete psychopath, obviously.
>>
>>214212528
Was this ever mentioned in the actual show? Very weird if it wasn't
>>
>>214209512
Ralph was modern and good at his job, Richie wasn't.
>>
>>214210123
The main reason to hate Janice is that she is as despicable as the mobsters without being as funny about it.
>>
>>214210633
Absofuckinglutely.
>>
>>214212679
It was Pantoliano's own characterization for the character when he was figuring out how to play it, he chose the wig and based it on Christoher Nolan, he also had Ralph dress more flamboyant than the others because "Ralph is more of a politician than a gangster", and he said Ralph was innocent in Pie-Oh-My's death.
>>

He had the best if not the only real character arc in the series, it was really disheartening seeing him fall back into drugs after the whole Adriana shit, stupid whore shoulda have been blacked to death by massive genius back in s1 her and her retarded ideas about having any talent.
>>
>>214209404
He was put on the throne by the Anglos and Soviets who deposed his father in the 1940s. Then he was saved by the CIA when his parliament rebelled against him in the 1950s. Not sure why people think he had any right to rule, he was a literal puppet propped up by hostile empires.
>>
>>214209698
>The real "blatant copy-paste" job was with Feech in season 5, who was obviously just an older version of Richie and boring because of that.
I liked the Feech plotline way more than Richie though. Tony actually had a lot of respect for Feech when he came out, so he gave him his just dues. Whereas Richie was treated like an annoying kid from day 1.
Then Feech actually overreached and caused dysentery in the ranks before Tony turned on him. Yet Richie was immediately scolded for petty shit like crippling some outsider (just because he was a personal friend of Tony's), small gambling debts (again, to another personal friend of Tony's), or selling cocaine (legitimate issue, but still minor).
But Feech directly attacked Paulie's lawn mowing extortion racket and Tony's executive game (the jew he robbed was a high roller that played at every game), and even went outside to NY to get those cars scrapped. Plus he tried to mog Tony at every turn, directly challenging him, unlike Richie's cucked attempts at secretive deals he couldn't sell.
>>
>>214209941
>neither does it have the darker, more realistic and psychological elements of seasons-5-6.
S2 is deeply psychological. Were you watching? That's why I like S2 and S5 the most.
> It's completely featureless, grey, dour and slow.
That's S4
>>
>>214213460
You forgot the most important thing, Feech did it because he wanted it too and Richie only did it because his whale of an ugly wife gaslighted him into doing it. Richie is easily the worst character if you don't count people like Jimmy who barely were in the show before they got offed
