I watched Death Note ongoing in 2006 can't believe how good it holds up. I rewatch it every couple of years, it's extremely rewatchable. My son is almost old enough to watch it with me can't wait to show him this stuff. Don't want him to watch Gen Z crap like jujutsu kaisen or my hero academia.

I hate how people usually bring up Code Geass when you talk about Death Note. Code Geass feels like a fucking joke with dated anime tropes and hilariously bad writing.

Death Note is a classic. It's clear that it's just a bunch of millennials that never rewatched anything bunch all the anime they liked as teens together as "classics". Death Note is an actual classic but it's being dragged down by retards lumping it in together with slop like that.

Made in Abyss is also art but you can never recommend it because the author is a legitimate, self-admitted pedophile, the weird pedo shit he forces into the anime (He literally threatened the studio to put it into the anime) genuinely drags down the entire experience, but it's still magical.

Promise of Neverland season 1 is also a classic. From the new world is also extremely good and it's weird how niche it is because it should be recognized broadly.

If Frieren continued with the same feeling, themes and pacing as the first couple of episodes it could have been a genuine classic, but sadly it devolves rather quickly in yet another action anime that foregoes its earlier themes.

Besides those the classics like Gurren Lagann, Evangelion (not the movies, not even end of evangelion) and Legend of the Galactic Heroes are serious classics and should NOT be dismissed simply because they are popular.

It has one of the most interesting, original premises of anything in the last 20 years. But the writing is not on the same level.

20 episodes in they caught up to the manga. Rather than wait for the manga author to figure out where his story was going, the writers just made up an original story to resolve everything. They accidentally wrote the most compelling and nuanced anime ever made that genuinely examines war and philosophy with the sort of grace and depth that something like Eva could only wish to achieve.

It's a masterpiece but not in the way you're thinking of. It's a masterpiece in that it's the most watchable show I have ever known. I have recommended death note to almost every demographic I know of (Kids, elderly, stacy from HR, Football obsessed barbecue uncle) and they all loved it. I think it's the single piece of media that has the broadest appeal possible. Even pseuds and contrarians on /tv/ can't help but admit it's a good show. Even though every cell in their contrarian body screams at them to pretend they dislike it, it's just that good of a show.

the ultimate problem with anime (and jap media as a whole) is that they come up with incredibly interesting concepts but they don't flesh them out or explore any deeper themes. Death Note touches on some interesting philosophical questions
>what is the nature of justice?
>is it right to kill criminals to protect the innocent?
>who gets to have this power?
>if this power is good in good hands, what happens if it falls into bad hands? is it worth the risk of letting bad people gain access to the power?
but it doesn't really explore any of them. instead, it gets lost in the cat and mouse game between L and Light. which is fine if you're looking for entertainment, but it just feels like a missed opportunity. like imagine if Crime & Punishment was just a story about a guy killing and robbing an old pawnbroker and getting caught. I'm sure Dostoyevsky could've made that entertaining, but people still talk about it because of the deeper themes. it's unlikely Death Note will still be remembered 100 years after airing.

there are ways to explore those questions deeper without necessarily providing an "objective answer."
for example, what if kira's murder spree results in some kind of negative consequence? maybe criminals start killing their victims to lower the likelihood of getting caught when they otherwise would've let them live?
what if Light killed someone truly innocent (other than investigators who could reveal him)? would he feel guilt and change his ways, or would he double down and accept that casualty as necessary collateral damage?
what if someone without Light's morality obtained a death note and started using it for their own ends? this is kind of brought up with Misa and the Yotsuba arc, but we never get a definitive answer about if the public's attitude towards kira would change if some other death note user decided to start killing for his own personal interests.
I mean really, think about this, Light intentionally gives the death note to someone he KNOWS will use it for personal reasons. he explicitly asked for it. does this affect his attitude? does he consider how this enabling of criminals goes against his stated ideology? not in the slightest.

plus there's plenty of room for the characters to debate the morality of kira's actions. we don't really get this outside of

the fact that Light is just a sociopath with no conscience after like episode 2 limits his ability to reflect on his actions, which limits the interesting inner monologue and dialogues he could have.

I'm not even saying that it's a bad show either. it doesn't need all of this to be an excellent show. but I think a deeper exploration into the morality of the death note would've made it even better and more memorable.

The only real good thing about Death Note is the directing. The cinematography and sound is just perfect. The entire reason Death Note got away with being a badly written show is because you could just watch it and unplug your brain. The director is a true artist. This guy took a manga that is mostly people sitting around and talking and he made it interesting. He turns scenes of people writing on paper into a visual spectacle with an amazing orchestral score.
